By Louise McMullen Editor & Journalism Teacher That is what 50 lucky students at Collège du Léman will be finding out, thanks to an unique collaborative project with National Geographic. 50 Genographic Project Participation Kits will be given to high school pupils allowing them to trace their own genetic history.
Voilà exactement ce que 50 élèves de High School du Collège du Léman ont eu la chance de découvrir grâce à une collaboration unique avec le National Geographic. Ils ont ainsi chacun reçu un kit pour participer au projet génographique qui leur a permis de parcourir leur propre histoire génétique.
The project is the brain child of Dr Spencer Wells, a National Geographic Explorer-inResidence. It aims to use science as a tool to study history and unravel age-old mysteries about early human migration. As the population geneticist puts it, “The greatest history book ever written is the one hidden in our DNA” and Genographic Project Participation Kits allow us all to get involved in tracing our genetic tree.
Ce projet est dû au Dr Spencer Wells, explorateur attitré du National Geographic. Il a pour but, à travers la science, d’étudier l’histoire et de débrouiller les mystères séculaires des premières migrations humaines. Comme le dit si bien le généticien, “Le plus grand livre jamais écrit est celui enfoui dans notre ADN” et les kits de participations au projet génographique permettent à chacun d’entre nous de retracer notre arbre généalogique commun.

DIRECTOR’S LETTER A sense of CDL at this moment in time is that the overwhelming majority of our students have had a very positive and productive year. They have grown physically, but intellectually and socially as well, and are now ready for a well deserved summer of rest and relaxation. CDL stays busy however and over the summer we will be welcoming nearly 250 Summer School participants from Japan, Turkey, Mexico, United States, Spain, and elsewhere. For three to six weeks they will take part in English or French language study in the mornings, and afternoons and weekends filled with fun and exciting sports and activities in beautiful Switzerland. Major summer renovations will include preparing the Mont Blanc, Salève, and Voirons buildings for the Middle School and 6eme4eme students for the autumn. As well, with the addition of the new outdoor café, work will be undertaken to convert the top floor of the Grenier into the Center for Student Government, and the middle floor into a “living room” and recreation area for our boarding students. Despite all the changes taking place in the process and procedures of new and re-enrollment at CDL, I am very pleased to announce our enrollments for 2007-2008 are strong, and in fact we are now beginning to place some students on a waitlist status as certain grade levels are full. On behalf of my administrative colleagues, the teachers and staff, we thank you very much for being a part of the community of Collège du Léman, wish you a wonderful summer, and look forward to welcoming you back to school at summer’s end. The CDL campus is growing faster than ever, including construction on “Eiger” (above) and the addition of a new outdoor student café.
La majorité de nos étudiants, à ce moment de l’année, se rendent compte que cette année scolaire fut pour eux productive et très positive. En effet, ils ont grandi physiquement, mais aussi intellectuellement et socialement. Ils sont prêts pour entamer un été reposant et relaxant. Le CDL quant à lui ne reste pas inoccupé pour autant et s’apprête à accueillir près de 250 étudiants pour les cours d’été, venant de pays tels que le Japon, la Turquie, le Mexique, les Etats-Unis, l’Espagne, etc. Durant trois ou six semaines, ces étudiants vont prendre des cours d’anglais ou de français tous les matins. Les après-midis et les week-ends seront consacrés à des activités sportives et récréatives ainsi que des visites à travers la Suisse. Les grandes rénovations estivales comprendront la préparation des bâtiments MontBlanc, Salève et Voirons pour le déménagement, à l’automne, du Middle School et de la section francophone (6ème à 4ème). De plus, avec la création du nouveau café extérieur,
le dernier étage du Grenier se transformera en bureau pour le Conseil des Elèves et le premier étage en salon et salle récréative réservée aux étudiants internes. Malgré les nombreux changements intervenus dans la procédure d’admissions des nouveaux élèves et des réadmissions au CDL, je suis très heureux de pouvoir annoncer que le nombre d’inscription pour l’année scolaire 20072008 est très positif. Les nouvelles demandes d’inscription sont désormais placées en liste d’attente, certains niveaux étant d’ores et déjà complets. Au nom de tous les employés, de l’administration et du corps enseignant, nous vous remercions de faire partie de la communauté du Collège du Léman, nous vous souhaitons un agréable été et nous réjouissons de vous revoir à l’école à la rentrée scolaire. So why CDL? Well, Dr Well’s daughters, Margot and Sasha are primary school students here and from personal experience he knows just how multicultural our school is. As Dr Wells explained during a recent presentation at CDL, “It’s such an international school, the student body is so diverse, so it’s a great opportunity to get the message out. Yes, diversity is important but it springs from a common source”. Ultimately the implications of the project are clear, we are all related and share common ancestors, which makes a nonsense of ideas of prejudice or racism.

Oui, la diversité est importante, mais elle découle d’une source commune”. Les implications du projet sont bien claires: nous sommes tous apparentés et partageons des ancêtres communs, ce qui rend sans fondement tout prejugé ou racisme.

Rock Fest Rock Fest By Young Hee Kim Grade 11 Student
MAHN, who reincarnated John Lennon just to be with us that night.
The second, annual College du Leman Rock Fest took place the night of May 16th at Collex Bossy when the hall was filled with noise, creativity and passion. Even after the night ended, with a roar of applause, the zeal of the concert still hovered inside the building, warming up the cool, rainy darkness.
Who ever said Rock and Roll was dead?!
The CDL Rock Fest was officially initiated last year by none other than our own French teacher, Mr. Van Leeuwen, who is also in charge of the National Honour Society (NHS) which organizes International Day. He noticed a lot of musically talented students and amateur bands performed every year during International Day. After talking to some of these musicians, Mr. Van Leeuwen started formulating the idea of hosting a Rock Concert at CDL. Initially, despite all his best endeavors to launch the event, the Rock Fest could not be integrated into a curriculum. With the advent of the IB curriculum, however, which requires CAS (Creativity, Action and Service) hours and with school consent, the CDL Rock Fest was finally launched last year.
Les origines de cet événement musical remontent à quelques années. Il y a 3 ou 4 ans, M. van Leeuwen, professeur de Français de son état et responsable du NHS (National Honor Society) qui organise la Journée Internationale, remarqua que le campus regorgeait de jeunes musiciens extrêmement talentueux. Au fil des années, ces musiciens se produisirent sur la modeste scène de la J.I jusqu’au jour où, après concertation avec des étudiants mélomanes de grades 11 & 12, l’idée d’un concert de Rock, grandeur nature, prit forme.
The Fest has since developed into a yearly event, giving our talented musicians a chance to perform on an actual stage, out of their secluded practice rooms, and also providing them with a responsive audience. The initiative has become more meaningful due to the fact that students are now actively using their genius and creativity to raise money for charity. This year’s concert was especially memorable with ten fantastic bands. Some, like PARADOX and INERTIA, wrote their own original songs, while a Korean group called YELLOW FEVER, covered three songs from the popular band Muse and then there was The

La nuit du 16 mai 2007 résonne encore dans les oreilles des quelques privilégiés qui ont assisté à la seconde édition annuelle de la CDL RockFest.
Une idée qui put se matérialiser grâce à l’introduction du IB et de son CAS (créativité, action, service) et au consentement de l’école.L’année 2006 vit donc naître, à Collex-Bossy, la première édition de la RockFest. M. van Leeuwen, avec M. Fulton (direction scénique), M. Barrow (responsable image) et M. Shaw (responsable du son 2007) offrirent donc la possibilité à tous ces talents en herbe de se produire sur une scène digne de ce nom devant un public tout acquis à leur cause. Cette année 2007 fut marquée par les prestations très « pro » de groupes tels que INERTIA , YELLOW FEVER, WHISKY JAM & THE MAHN qui nous ont ressuscité John Lennon pour l’occasion. Qui a dit que le Rock & Roll était mort ?

A Final Curtain Call for CDL’s Longest Serving Drama Director Un clin d’œil après la tombée du rideau à notre Directeur théâtral M. Raggett By Steve C. Fulton Coordinator for Student Activities steve.fulton@cdl.ch What a year it has been for activities at CDL! On stage we started with a stunning but ultimately sad, production. Twelfth Night was an amazing success, in no small part due to its excellent director, John Raggett, who retires this year and will be sorely missed. John has been the heart and soul of serious drama at CDL with over fifty productions in forty years to his name. On a personal note, John has been an inspiration, not only to me but to generations of students who all remember him with great affection. It will be no small matter to attempt to fill the enormous void left in the area of drama but we will be inspired by the legacy and memory of a great man. Recently it has been the musical season and over two incredible weeks we saw brilliant productions, first by the Middle School in the “Wizard of Oz” and then by the High School in Disney’s “High School Musical”. The French Section also produced a couple of outstanding plays including judging whether the Big Bad Wolf was quite so bad or just got a bad press! The depth and variety of the performances, in both music and drama, has effectively showcased the incredible array of talent we are so lucky to have here at CDL. A whole host of new activities such as waterskiing and diving have found their way onto the calendar and there are many more in the planning stage for next year. We have recently been given Independent Operator status by The International Award (known as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award in the UK) so this will be another exciting venture. I am looking forward to another year of exhilerating activities, dramatic productions and musical concerts…. see you there!

Quelle année ce fut pour les activités au CDL ! Nous avons commencé avec une production stupéfiante, bien qu’elle se termine un peu tristement. En effet, « Twelfth Night » fut un immense succès, en grande partie pour l’excellence de son directeur artistique M. John Raggett qui prend sa retraite cette année.
section francophone a également produit de remarquables pièces, dont un portait sur le procès du Grand Méchant Loup, à savoir si celui-ci était réellement méchant ou souffrait de mauvaise presse ! La variété des représentations, tant théâtrales que musicales ont démontré les nombreux talents que nous avons la grande chance d’avoir, ici au CDL!
Avec plus de 50 productions en 40 ans John fut le cœur et l’âme de l’art dramatique au CDL. Il a été une source d’inspiration pour des générations d’étudiants. Son départ laissera un vide au sein de l’équipe théâtrale mais nous poursuivrons sur le chemin tracé par ce grand Monsieur!
Un grand nombre de nouvelles activités telles que le ski nautique et la plongée sousmarine font partie du nouveau calendrier pour l’année prochaine, et d’autres sont encore en prévision. Il est à noter que nous nous sommes récemment vu décerner le statut de « Independent Operator » par le « International Award » (connu sous le nom du prix du Duc d’Edinburgh en Angleterre), ce qui sera pour nous un nouveau challenge! Je me réjouis de vivre une nouvelle année remplie d’activités stimulantes, de productions théâtrales et de concerts…..à bientôt !
Nous terminons également la saison des comédies musicales, où durant deux semaines incroyables, nous avons pu admirer de brillantes productions, telles que celle du Middle School « Le Magicien d’Oz » et celle du High School « High School Musical » écrite par la maison Disney. La

A Dramatic Evening for the French Section Spectacle annuel du cours d’art dramatique By Mme Michele Rossi, Mme Frances Babst, & M. David Vangelista French Section Drama Teachers michele.rossi@cdl.ch Thursday 10th May… The Big Day has finally arrived! 10 am: The dress rehearsal is in full swing. Last minute adjustments are made, different moves are checked. 3 pm: The rehearsal is now over; the next time the actors are on the stage, it will be before an audience! 4.30 pm: Students put on their costumes and practice together; the actors imagine the best and the worst… 5.45 pm: The first parents arrive…Soon it will be time to go on stage in front of parents, friends, teachers. What if I forget my words? What if I come on at the wrong moment? What if I have a giggling fit? 5pm: Mme Fehr is already introducing the three plays: the theme is fairy tales and the

Jeudi 10 mai... Le jour J est enfin arrivé ! 10h00. La répétition générale bat son plein. On met au point les derniers détails, on revoit les différentes manipulations. 15h00. Plus que deux heures avant le début : la prochaine fois que l’on montera sur la scène, ce sera devant le public ! 16h30. Costumés, maquillés, les élèves répètent une dernière fois leur rôle. On se met à imaginer le meilleur comme le pire… 16h45. Les premiers parents arrivent… Mon dieu, bientôt on va devoir entrer en scène, sous le regard des parents, des amis et des professeurs ! Et si je ne me souvenais plus de mon texte ? Et si je rentrais en scène au mauvais moment ? Et si j’étais pris d’un fou rire? 17h00: Déjà Mme Fehr annonce les différentes pièces : la soirée sera dédiée à Mme Dayer, qui est professeur d’anglais au CDL depuis de nombreuses années, auteur de plusieurs recueils de contes et qui part hélas en retraite à la fin de l’année scolaire. Aussi
evening is dedicated to Mme Dayer, an English teacher for almost 30 years who will retire at the end of this year. The two 6e plays are theatrical presentations of two of Mme Dayer’s stories, “Un Lâcher de ballons” and “L’Etoile de Noël”; stories full of wisdom, finesse and tenderness. The 5e play, “The Queen of Stories” leads us into a magical world. The 4e play, in English, “Big Bad”, is a comical, at times farcical, presentation of the final trial of the Big Bad Wolf, involving the amused audience who must help the judge to pronounce his verdict: is the infamous wolf really guilty or was he framed? 7 pm: Everything has gone very well. The show ends with loud applause and cheers from the audience who seem delighted. Everyone is happy, especially drama teachers, Mrs Bapst, Mrs Rossi and Mr Vangelista, who are very proud of their budding actors!

Les deux pièces présentées par les sixièmes sont une adaptation théâtrale de deux de ses contes, Un lâcher de ballons et L’Etoile de Noël, histoires pleines de sagesse, de finesse et de tendresse. La pièce des cinquièmes, La Reine des Histoires, se propose également de nous emmener dans l’univers magique des contes. La pièce des quatrièmes, Big Bad, jouée entièrement en anglais, met en scène, de manière drôle et loufoque le procès du Grand Méchant Loup. Cette fois, c’est un public ravi qui est amené à participer, afin d’aider le juge à prononcer son verdict : alors, ce célèbre Loup, coupable ou innocent? 19h00. Tout s’est très bien déroulé et le spectacle se termine sous un tonnerre d’applaudissements. Les professeurs d’art dramatique, Mme Bapst, Mme Rossi et M. Vangelista, sont très fiers de leurs jeunes acteurs en herbe.

CDL Emergency First Response Project Stage de secourisme au Collège du Léman By Rosella Cosso, Vladimir Stosic, Michael Van Leeuwen, Virginie Aubanelle High School Teachers In May 2007, a ‘pilot’ team of twelve enthusiastic and motivated CDL teachers attended the first of a series of Emergency First Responder (EFR) courses planned for the school staff, lead by Dr V. Stosic. The goal of these courses is to train school staff to become Emergency First Responders and to make available to them a maximum variety of paramedical tools. Dr Stosic chose to teach the EFR course amongst several available options, since EFR is the fastest growing international professional organization for primary and secondary care, recognized in several countries, offering some of the most effective didactic and pedagogical material. The course is structured in two parts:
Emergency First Response and First Aid. Both the Emergency First Response Primary Care and Secondary Care courses are divided into three segments: Knowledge Development, Skill Development and Scenario Practice. The course leader was able to develop the participants’ skills in a rigorous, yet relaxed and fun way, especially through some carefully chosen Practice Scenarios! We are grateful to our Director, Mr. Fleming, and to Mr. Bearblock, High School Principal and CDL Safety Officer, for the coordination of this project. Further developments are planned, including training some staff members to become Advanced Emergency Responders, able to use Automated External Defibrillators and to provide oxygen, and to make the training available for CDL parents, too.

Dirigé par le Dr. V Stosic, ce stage est le premier d’une longue série de formations qui seront prochainement proposées à l’ensemble du corps enseignant. L’objectif est de former les professeurs aux techniques des premiers secours à travers une variété de scénarios et de pouvoir ainsi faire face à une situation d’urgence. Le cours est divisé en deux parties : la formation aux premiers secours et la formation aux premiers soins. Chacune de ces dernières sont divisées en trois sous parties: la théorie, la pratique ainsi que la mise en situation.
D’autres stages sont prévus, y compris des stages de perfectionnement pour savoir utiliser un défibrillateur automatisé et l’apport d’oxygène. Ces stages seront également proposés par la suite aux parents d’élèves désireux d’acquérir les gestes de premiers secours. Merci donc à notre formateur qui a su donner à son cours un équilibre entre rigueur et décontraction à travers des scénarios savamment choisis. Nous remercions également notre Directeur, Monsieur Fleming, Monsieur Bearblock, ainsi que le personnel en charge de la sécurité au CDL, pour avoir coordonné ce projet.

Un nouveau visage viendra éclairer, dès septembre, le préau du Jardin d’enfants, avec l’arrivée de Mme Sophie Lenoir qui rejoindra le Collège du Léman comme Directrice de la Section Préscolaire. Mme Lenoir travaillera en étroite collaboration avec Mme Christiane Perey qui continuera son activité auprès des enfants, des enseignantes et des parents du jardin d’enfants en qualité de Conseillère Pédagogique. Voici quelques lignes qui vous feront connaître un peu mieux Mme Lenoir ! Je suis née dans une boite à craies ! Voila ce que j’aime répondre lorsqu’on me demande pourquoi je suis devenue directrice d’école, ma maman était enseignante et la cour de récréation était mon jardin. Collège Du Léman will be welcoming a new face in September, when Sophie Lenior joins CDL as the Director of the Pre-School. Mme Lenoir will act in close collaboration with Mme Christiane Perey, who will be working with the children, teachers and parents of the Pre-School as the Teaching and Learning Counsellor. In 1986 I became the Director of the Ermitage School, working with a pedagogical team of 25 French and English teachers ( 16 classes, 400 children). Convinced of the need to teach English beginning in kindergarten, I untiringly developed an open bilingual French/ English kindergarten and primary classes.
I was born in a chalk box! This is what I like to say when I’m asked why I became a school director. My mother was a teacher and the playground was my garden. With my BAC and a degree in geography from the Sorbonne in my pocket, I decided to teach. My career started in France as a geography teacher at l’Ermitage. Soon I lost my enthusiasm because my interest was in educating young children and so I earned

Over the years I often have spent my holiday in Switzerland, particularly in CransMontana. I was a riding and ski instructor and then became a director of a chalet for children on their school holidays. My love for Switzerland has been enhanced through meeting my husband who besides giving me happiness and three beautiful children, has given me his nationality. Today I am delighted to be joining College du Leman, and I am impatient to meet my new students of diverse nationalities.

Record Trophy Haul for CDL Sports Rafle record de trophées pour le CDL By Robert Brady Head of Sports robert.brady@cdl.ch The 2006-07 sports season concluded with the annual awards ceremony at International Day, showcasing an impressive 28 first place cups won in various sports, the second most ever won in CDL history and easily the most of any international school in Switzerland. Among the many remarkable results, there are some that must be highlighted, including our basketball program’s continued outstanding success. The Junior Varsity Boys’ Basketball team won the SGIS championship for a remarkable 15th consecutive year! The Boys’ Varsity won both SGIS tournaments in convincing style and as of writing, our Versoix Club Varsity Boys’ team is en route to be possible Swiss club champions. Our all ages, boys and girls, Combined Basketball teams entered 8 inter-scholastic competitions
La saison de sport 2006-2007 s’est terminée avec la cérémonie annuelle de remise des prix, qui s’est déroulée lors des festivités de la Journée Internationale. En vedette se trouvaient les 28 coupes de 1ère place. Ceci représente le 2ème plus grand nombre de coupes jamais gagnées dans l’histoire du CDL. En plus des résultats remarquables obtenus, certains sont à retenir tout particulièrement en basketball, sport qui remporte un succès continu. L’équipe de basketball garçons « Junior Varsity » a gagné le championnat SGIS pour la 15ème année consécutive ! L’équipe des garçons « Varsity » a gagné les tournois SGIS dans un style très convaincant, et notre équipe de « Versoix Club Varsity Boys » est en route pour un éventuel titre de champion suisse. Girls’ Soccer team who after winning the Geneva Inter-scolaire Tournament will have the honor of representing the Canton of Geneva in the finals of the Swiss Tournament, to be held at the end of June, in Basle. The key to the success of this memorable year lies with the motivation and effort of our talented athletes, and in the collaboration of the sports department with the totality of the CDL community. Maths Competitions + Bonn + Vienna = A Great Time For All! Compétitions de Mathématiques + Bonn + Vienne = Un agréable moment pour tous! By Yongjin Lee IB Year 1 Student This year the ISMTF Senior Mathematics Competition was held at the American International School in Vienna. The College du Léman team arrived the day before so we were able to visit the city ahead of the number crunching. We went to the Technisches Museum; a somewhat appropriate choice for a group of mathematicians, and the Spanische Hofreitschule , a traditional riding school for Lipizzan horses.

Before leaving we managed to fit in a visit to the Schönbrunn Palace which provided a welcome break from mathematics and a chance to discover some of Austria’s history. Schönbrunn was the Royal family’s summer palace and is living proof of the grandeur of the House of Habsburg which once held power over so much of Europe.

By Juarte Zananaviciute Grade 10 Student For many, the first thought popping into one’s head when hearing the word “mathematics” is not a pleasant one - unless you are a mathematics teacher - but contrary to expectations this trip was a lot of fun. Two teams made up of Chen Xi, Yuxin Luckie Shi, Haruka Watanabe, Solji Lim, Lucy Bai, Nicholas Steketee and myself represented CDL at the ISMTF Junior Mathematics Competition in Bonn.
On arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the Bonn International School and our host families. All six girls were put with the same family and soon found themselves to be almost a part of it. In particular, we were very well looked after by the daughter, a friendly, charming 7th grader. The following day was spent sight-seeing, exploring Bonn’s picturesque façade and Roman artifacts. Who knows how many memory sticks we got through that day?!

Overall, however, our teams performed admirably and the CDL teams were very proud to discover Lucy had come in 8th place (out of nearly 200 students) in the individual contest. Les six filles furent placées dans la même famille et se sentirent rapidement intégrées dans celle-ci. Leur fille, une charmante élève de grade 7 s’est tout particulièrement bien occupée de nous. Le jour suivant fut consacré à la visite de la ville de Bonn, avec ses façades pittoresques et ses vestiges romains. Qui pourrait dire combien de « cartes mémoire » nous avons utilisé ce jour ?

arriva. Le concours individuel débuta dans la matinée, suivi de la compétition en groupe après le repas de midi. Nos équipes obtinrent de bons résultats dans la partie individuelle mais trouvèrent la compétition en groupe d’une difficulté frustrante. Au final, nos équipes s’en sortirent admirablement bien et les élèves du CDL furent très fiers de découvrir Lucy à la 8ème place (sur quelque 200 étudiants) dans le concours individuel. Nous sommes tous d’accord pour dire que ce fut une expérience merveilleuse et nous aimerions remercier Mme Werthenbach pour son enthousiasme et son aide.

International Day Journée Internationale By Young Hee Kim Grade 11 Student A blur of different colors, aromas of distinct cultures, sounds of multifarious languages. These are some phrases that describe one of the most beloved events of College du Leman - International Day. The epitome of our school’s global characteristics, it is a day when everyone, regardless of grade, curriculum or country, comes together to enjoy a day experiencing our diverse cultures.
Over the last fifteen years it has become one of the biggest events in the school calendar, with more activities and stands added every year, such as the recent face-painting, hair braiding and milk shake stands. Last year, a CDL football league was established by Simon Bailey (IGCSE Yr2) and this year, CDL will also have a Global Issues stand to promote environmental awareness.
International Day was first initiated fifteen years ago by a former teacher, Matthew Leitner, who headed the National Honor Society (NHS), a student charity organization. Seeking to integrate the international characteristics of CDL with a fundraising event for Cambodian children, and with the aid of another former teacher, Mrs. Seth, his idea came to fruition in 1992 with the first annual International Day.
International Day has undoubtedly grown into the crux of the NHS’s fundraising activity. It has also become a day to honor those who contributed most to CDL, by using their names on the special currency notes used during the event. This year’s currency featured our Headmaster, Mr Terennce B. Gale who has done so much for the school. Despite rainy weather an amazing CHF 14,700 was raised this year, making it one of the most successful ever. We look forward to International Day getting bigger and better every year!

du nom de Mathew Leitner (économie et business) eut l’idée de créer une journée qui reflèterait le pluriculturalisme du CDL afin de récolter des fonds en faveur d’enfants cambodgiens. En 1992, avec l’aide précieuse de Mme Seth, la Journée Internationale vit le jour pour la première fois. Durant ces 15 dernières années la J.I n’a cessé de grandir offrant une palette toujours plus variée d’activités. Entre les événements sportifs (remise des prix du sport et le tournoi de foot), artistiques (face painting et hair braiding) et les stands de nourriture…la J.I se veut aussi être d’utilité publique. En plus de récolter des fonds à but caritatif, la J.I voudrait mettre la question de l’environnement à la lumière. Avec le stand Global Issue, nous espérons faire prendre conscience à tous de l’importance du respect de notre planète.
A elle seule, cette journée symbolise toutes les valeurs véhiculées par le collège. La tolérance, le respect, la diversité…sont à l’honneur alors que tout le corps estudiantin converge vers la Concha pour y goûter des spécialités des 4 coins du monde, y chanter et danser aux rythmes aussi variés qu’enthousiasmants ou encore pour s’affronter dans le tournoi de foot de Simon Bailey. Alors que cette journée paraît couronner l’année académique de ses mille couleurs, ses origines sont peu connues. Il y a une quinzaine d’années, un professeur

CDL’s IB Program IB Program a CDL By Paul Barrow IB Coordinator paul.barrow@cdl.ch We are only in our second year of running the IB Diploma programme yet it still amazes me how much has already been accomplished. CDL had been considering the International Baccalaureate for several years and in 2004 it was felt the time was right. The traditional English based ‘A’ levels were seen as having less impact on further education and we were looking for a more international qualification. It was a big step. We were changing a system that had been in place for more than 20 years and it needed a strong commitment from all involved. Every school needs to be assessed and approved by the IB organisation before it can offer (or say it will offer) any IB programme. Our official application process started in November 2004 and we received approval in April 2005. This is quite an achievement when the process for most schools apparently Le programme préparant au diplôme IB n’est en place que depuis deux années scolaires et il est impressionnant de constater le chemin qui a déjà été parcouru. Force était de constater que les diplômes “A levels” n’étaient plus vraiment adaptés aux études supérieures actuelles. Nous voulions mettre en place un diplôme répondant de manière plus adéquate aux exigences internationales. Changer un système en place depuis plus de 20 ans ne fut pas une mince affaire, un immense investissement de toutes les personnes concernées a été nécessaire pour y parvenir.

Those 16 students are now in their second and final year. 60 more students began the programme last September and are currently in their first year of IB. But that’s not all . . . In this short period we have restructured the high school to make the IB a ‘floating block’ whereby students can enter the programme at whatever age, as long as they meet the entry requirements. Some start the IB earlier than others although it should not be a race, everyone should get the best chance to get the best qualifications they can. And we’re still not finished . . . Les 16 élèves concernés effectuent actuellement la 2ème et dernière année du programme. Quelque 60 élèves ont débuté le programme en septembre dernier et sont à présent en classe de 1ère année IB.

We are now working as one, international, school to offer what is probably the most rewarding educational programme students will ever take. NBPS student participates in “March of the Living” Les élèves de NBPS participent à la Marche des Vivants
Sarah Marshak NBPS Student When I signed up to be a participant in the March of the Living, all of my friends who had previously attended told me that it was “lifechanging,” and all of the program’s literature essentially said the same thing. I had figured that this was just promotional rhetoric, that no experience could be so profound and moving. Over the course of two weeks and after a journey through three countries, I saw how wrong I really was: the March of the Living really was that amazing. Our time in Budapest was limited to one day, so we did not really get an in-depth look at the city, but in Poland, we saw the best and worst of human nature before our eyes. In Krakow, we saw a desecrated, centuries-old Jewish cemetery with swastikas on the walls, yet in Lublin, we saw a yeshiva that the Jewish community had just restored. In a town called Tikocyn, we were enthusiastically welcomed by the school children, yet not all residents were thrilled to see Jews in their town again: an old man spat on me as I passed him on the sidewalk. We saw mass graves in remote forests, 70 tons of human ash at Majdanek, and 4000 pounds of human hair at Auschwitz. Lorsque je me suis inscrit à la Marche pour la Vie, tous mes amis qui y avaient déjà participé m’ont dit que “cela changeait la vie” et tous les textes sur cet événement disaient la même chose. Je m’imaginais qu’il s’agissait juste d’une rhétorique promotionnelle, car aucune expérience ne peut être aussi profonde et émouvante. Mais après ce cours de deux semaines et un voyage à travers trois pays, j’ai réalisé que je m’étais trompé: la Marche pour la Vie est réellement aussi exceptionnelle qu’on le dit. Comme nous ne sommes restés qu’une journée à Budapest, nous n’avons pas pu découvrir à fond cette ville, mais en Pologne, nous avons pu avoir devant nos yeux le meilleur et le pire de la nature humaine. A Cracovie, nous avons vu un très ancien cimetière juif désacralisé avec des swastikas sur les murs, et à Lublin, un yeshiva que la

Mitzvah- better late than never, I suppose. There is just something so special about being Jewish and in Israel- as corny as it sounds, Israel really feels like the Jewish homeland.
In Israel, however, we were treated to the antithesis of Poland; we witnessed the rebirth and resilience of the Jewish people. We visited the Kotel and Old City in Jerusalem, Independence Hall and Rabin Square in Tel Aviv, and we rode donkeys in the Galilee. On the final day of the trip, I became a Bat
I wouldn’t trade my time on the March for anything in the world. I made friends that I am sure will last a lifetime, and because of this trip, I am both a better Jew and a better person. I am certain that my journey through Hungary, Poland, and Israel was the greatest experience of my entire life.
