ANALYSIS REPORT:EUROPEAN ENTREPRENEURSHIP OPPORTUNITIESCHAPTER 1 – Start-up trends in partners’ countries and Europe
1.1. Introduction
About this GUIDE
This is a FREE Open Educational Resources (OER) guide about case analysis of European entrepreneurship opportunities and includes videos, weblinks, tools and other materials. It describes successful cases, a short history and implementation examples to inspire and inform.
The guide is designed to be used by:
CurrentStudents:Toenrichandupdateknowledgeacquired inacademic courseswith real cases of successful enterprises.
Future Students: To interest students in attending the Higher Education (HE) system by providing, for free, an innovative point of view about successful cases of entrepreneurship.
Former Students: To update existing knowledge with fresh perspectives from innovative or new sectors of entrepreneurship.
Start-ups, Accelerators and Incubators, all SMEs and the general Business Sector: To provide new perspectives and live cases that could potentially inspire new enterprises.
About the METHODOLOGY
ThisIntermediaryOrganisation(IO)analyzessuccessfulcasesofentrepreneurshipinrelevantand interestingsectors.Toprovideagoodeducationalimpact, itisimportanttoidentifytheelements of success by exploring the history, evolution, errors, orbit shifting moments and methodologies used.
The selected topics are:
EuropeanCulturalHeritageand Entrepreneurship:Currently oneofthemainmethodstovalorise local culture is by creating local entrepreneurship opportunities.
According to Wikipedia, “Social entrepreneurship is an approach by individuals, groups, start-up companies or entrepreneurs, in which they develop, fund and implement solutions to social, cultural, orenvironmentalissues.”Itisrecognised globallyasoneof the mostchallengingsectors for a start-up to be created.
Glocalisation is a word composed of global and localisation. It is the adaptation of international products to the particularities of a local culture in which they are sold. The process allows the integration of local markets into world markets.
FabLab is the abbreviation for Fabrication Laboratory, a type of small scale workshop offering (personal) digital fabrication. The FabLab concept is used as a platform for learning and innovation: A place to play, create, learn, mentor and invent. It is a place where one can connect toaglobalcommunityof learners, educators, technologists, researchers, makersandinnovators. Thereisanevidentbenefitespeciallyforthecreationofstart-upsandthedevelopmentofalready existing enterprises.
About INNOVATION
This IO presents innovative characteristics of cases on their way to success. Thanks to the mix of topics, it is possible to inspire a large context from very local (e.g. glocal activities, cultural heritage, local FabLab) to worldwide dimension (social entrepreneurship and sharing economy but also FabLab worldwide community).
Another relevant aspect of innovation is the social engagement and impact arising from entrepreneurship activities that is not only oriented to the business sector but also the creation of social and civic value (ref. social entrepreneurship). The preservation of local heritage, culture and products are more and more necessary because of sustainability needs (e.g. fighting global warming and preventing climate change) and community building (e.g. for facing global crises, like pandemics).
About the EXPECTED IMPACT and TRANSFERABILITY POTENTIAL
The impact is expected to be large and the transferability potential should be substantial thanks totheavailabilityoftheguideinfivedifferentnationallanguages(English,Finnish,Italian,French and Icelandic).

The data, updated as of July 2021, provides a view of new business activities 8 years after the introduction of a national law recognising and promoting start-ups with a National Register for innovative startups.
Thestatuscanbeobtainedof anyinnovativestart-upandcorporationswithfewerthanfiveyears of establishment, with an annual turnover of less than EUR 5 million, is unlisted on the stock exchange and in possession of specific indicators (regarding the technological innovations required by national law).
The start-ups currently consist of more than 13,000 businesses, registered in the special register as innovative startups and as of July 2021 represents 3.6% of all newly established companies.
Regarding geographical distribution: 1 in 4 start-ups are established in the Lombardy region (northern Italy and with Milan as the capital).
About the profiles: (5,575 total start-ups)
- The start-ups are mostly micro-business (average production value €171,7k), also because the best-performers are losing their innovative start-up status in the National register.
- More than half of innovative start-ups (52,3%) have a profit loss.

1.5. Start-up trends in France
Startup trends in France
In recent years there has been, in general, a positive climate for startups in France. The French government has put in place several initiatives to foster the emergence and growth of new companies, specifically in the technological sector. Special initiatives are also aimed at attracting foreign investors and entrepreneurs: the ‘Welcome to France’ platform supports foreign investors, entrepreneurs, researchers, and employees to understand and overcome the administrative issues of setting up or joining a business in France. Moreover, some tax strategies have been put in place to support startups and innovation: The Research Tax Credit (IRB), The Innovation Tax Credit (ITC), The Jeune Entreprise Innovante status (JEI - Young Innovative Enterprise). Different financial support mechanisms for young innovative enterprises are available3 including: Tech Grants, R&D loans, priming loans, innovation loans, and in particular, specific grants for supporting deep-tech innovation.
Currently, France is experiencing consistent growth in terms of innovation. They ranked 12th in the 2020 Global Innovation Index (16th in 2019). For patents issued they ranked 2nd European wide, 4th globally, with 6,2% of the patents submitted to the European patent office. This is a direct result of efforts by French policies makers in the last years: “Between 2008 and 2018,domesticspending onresearch and developmentincreasedby 1.6%peryear, afasterpace than French GDP, to reach 51.8 billion euros in 2018”3 and this allowed to develop competent researchers poolcounting “295 000 researchers, an equivalent of 9.6 researchersfor 1000 active workers (against 7.7 at the European level), of which 28% are women.”3 .
Despite the COVID-19 crisis, fundraising for French startups didn’t stop and has brought fresh resources that could be implemented for business growth depending on the maturity of the company. In 2020, France ranked 2nd, for a European country, in venture capital funds raised… and fund-raising has quadrupled in five years. In 2021 French startups raised over €6 billion, showing growth, up from the €5 billion raised in 2020 and €4.4 billion collected in 2019. In June 2021 France had up to 16 unicorns. In particular, in 2021 (see Table A) the most active sectors were in Fintech, Healthcare (including Biotech and MedTech) and E-Commerce companies. The firsttwoeachwith 10outof58startupsthatsuccessfullyraisedfunds(with643.4M€and684.17 M€ respectively) and E-Commerce with 7 top fundraisers (1383.1 M€). These three sectors all together consisted of 43% of the overall funding. The other sector most represented is Logistics (4 representatives) and AI (3). Other sectors include: Business (Management and Planning, (2), CRMsolutions(2),Cryptocurrency(1),CyberSecurity(1),EdTech(1),Energy(2),Food(2),Gaming (1), GreenTech (1), Hotel Real Estate (1), HR Management (2), Insurance (2), IT (1), Job Marketplace (2), Mobile Games (including Platforms, 2), User Experience Analysis (1).
Noticeably, the two representatives of the Gaming sector (Sorare) and the pure Mobile Video Games industry (Homa Games) were the only startups running for two rounds of fundraising in 2021, proving their accelerated level of maturity (respectively from Series A at 40 M€ to Series B at an astounding and unrivalled 585 M€ for Sorare; and from Seed funding at 12.59 M€ to Series A at 44 M€ for Homa Games).
In the two first months of 2022 (Table B), ten startups have already raised funds for a total amount of €2 billion with E-Commerce taking the lead with the biggest amount (700 M€) and FinTech as a close runner up (601 M€), both with two representatives out of the ten. HR Management has two representatives as well. In terms of sectors, there is an important new entry with ExoTec that brings robotics into the funding arena. Healthcare, IT and Insurance are the other sectors covered at the beginning of this year. The FinTech company Qonto (486 M€) leads the group and consolidates its growth (series D), closely followed by BackMarket (already series E) with 450 M€, almost doubling the funding raised in 2021. Also, Alma, Ankorstore, and Payfit followed up early this year on what was raised in 2021.
There are also activebusiness incubator and accelerator consortiums and individual options that offer a varied range of services. Certainly the most well known are based in Paris, like Station F, the newest and the largest in Europe (they claim in the world) which hosts the ‘Welcome to France’ initiative mentioned above.NUMAParis, theoldestin Parisianlandscape, onceknownas LaCantine, thenit becameNUMAfromNUmériqueethuMAn,andwithdifferentspinoffs across the world. Schoolab, very active also for training and growing in public attention. Liberté Living Lab and La Pailllasse, likely the most research-oriented, a bio-hazard tech lab is hosted in their premises, and their residences also very keen on social entrepreneurship. Pépinière 27, the second oldest business incubator in Paris, but there are important places all around in the country,forinstance:intheareaofNantesandSaint-Nazaire,Atlanpole,LaRuche(whichfocuses in particular societal and environmental businesses), Creative Care Factory (which addresses

CASES ANALYSIS REPORT:EUROPEAN ENTREPRENEURSHIP OPPORTUNITIES1.6. Start-up ecosystem in Luxembourg
General Information
LuxembourgisbeinghypedastheheartoftheEuropeanstart-upecosystem.Thegovernment has financed huge amounts of growth in services and programs that support start-ups of all types, especially technical innovations in various sectors. This has been supported by the inherent opportunities that exist within a small country, for example, easier access to people with decision-making capabilities. Luxembourg's location in the ‘heart’ of Europe and a healthy economy also attract skilled labour from neighbouring countries as well as abroad. The influential presence of a strong financial industry to support the mood of prospective funding cannot be overlooked.
There is a huge amount of energy invested in the development of the start-up ecosystem in Luxembourg. Institutional startup support can be found at the House of StartUps (HoST) and House of Entrepreneurs (H.O.E), Luxinnovation, NYUKO, Luxembourg Space Agency and Luxembourg for Finance. Often but not always, nested within these are incubators/ accelerators and innovation hubs such as Maison de l’Economie Social (MESIS), Luxembourg House of Financial Tech (LHoFT), House of BioHealth and Technoport that are offering support through various fundraising challenges and coordinating networking platforms. They work at ensuring experts in a multitude of industries are available to train and mentor entrepreneurs. The descriptions of this environment, used most often by program directors and successful start-ups combined, include: compact, efficient, open, fertile, high energy/dynamic, collaborative, accessible changemakers, multicultural/multilingual, access toskilled labour and testing ground. The peak startup growth in the last 5 years was in 2019 for all industries in Luxembourg, the pandemic of course slowed things down. In Luxembourg, big data and data science innovations rule. Software applications, Cybersecurity and Risk Management, AI and E-Commerce are all taking above 10% of the pie, although not all of the top 5 sectors are adding significantly to these innovation pathways. The new data for 2020 was not surprising, Education and Health startups hit the top 5 as a response to the COVID-19 challenges of the last two years.
Speaking of challenges, it should be noted, there is very little talk of failure. Everything is presented as great and amazing and that’s not the reality of the startup world. ‘Failing Up’ is

Luxembourg1.7. Start-up trends in Finland
General Information
Finland is considered one of the fastest-growing start-up scenes globally, and it has a vibrant, emerging ecosystem of accelerators, angel investors and VC’s, backed with strong government support. In general, the Finnish landscape for start-ups is seen as very good and supportive. The following five issues are identified as specific characteristics of the Finnish start-up scene:13
Finland’s particularstrengthliesindigitalcompetency, spearheadingtheeffortintheEUandone of the top performers globally. In 2019, Finland was recognised as the most digitally advanced nation in Europe, ranking highest in digital public services and human capital.
Openness and transparency are typical features of the Finnish culture, and they are also encouraged in the business sector. Finnish companies and institutions see knowledge as an important factor in competitiveness, but even more important is knowledge sharing.

VTT Technical Research Centre, one of the leading research organisations in Europe, is a fruitful seedbed for innovation, and in recent years, many Finnish start-ups have spun off from VTT with new sustainable solutions.
Finland is also one of the leading countries in cancer research and care and offers the latest treatment options and equipment to both domestic and international patients. Furthermore, Finland’s Medical Tech and Digital Health industry are booming, with international investors continuouslymonitoringtheactivitieswithinit.StrongHealthTechinnovationskillsgeneratetopnotch solutions for improving healthcare efficiency and patient wellbeing.
In early 2018, Finland made it possible for entrepreneurs interested in international growth to move to the country and join the fast-growing start-up ecosystem with the Startup Permit. This has proven to be a good solution to attract international talents to Finland.
The Finnish start-up ecosystem is quite young and still emerging, particularly in the Gaming, Technology and Healthcare sectors. The majority of start-ups are small scale and struggling to reach the global market. Success stories such as Supercell (www.supercell.com), Rovio (www.rovio.com),Wolt(www.wolt.com)and Kiosked(www.kiosked.com)arewidelyknown,but they are only a small fraction of the Finnish start-up scene. However, as Finland is considered to be a favourable location to the entrepreneurial ecosystem, where a lot can be seen happening. EU-startup.com has listed 10 promising Finland-based teams founded in recent years, which all

Entrepreneurship societies promoting entrepreneurship
In recent years, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) have become important sites for promoting entrepreneurship. In this context, entrepreneurship education is the key intervention used for promoting, realising and institutionalising entrepreneurship and entrepreneurialism.14 In addition to the academic curriculum, different learning opportunities that take place outside the classroom have become an increasingly important feature of entrepreneurship education.15 Following these trends, Entrepreneurship Societies (ESs) and clubs targeted at students have gained an important role and become key promoters of entrepreneurial ecosystems at HEIs.16 They have been described as: Extra-curricular, informal, non-accredited, voluntary-based, student-led organisations that aim to promote entrepreneurship by arranging various activities around entrepreneurship.17
Today, the ESs are widespread around theworld. The oldest clubs were established in the 1990s at MIT, Stanford, and the University of California to boost entrepreneurial activities within and around the universities,18 and in the UK; vibrant ESs can be found at Oxford, Cambridge and York.19 In Finland, the phenomenon has been quite intense, and ESs have spread here rapidly; thefirstESs wereestablishedin 2008-2009, andin 2018, therewere 19ESsin13cities.One-third of the societies are located in the capital region. The ESs in Finland are student and other volunteer-led organisations that boost the entrepreneurial spirit and promote entrepreneurship as a viable career option. They inspire people towards start-up entrepreneurship, and help

1.8. Conclusion
As can be seen, there is plenty of innovation in Europe. Many of the companies mentioned on theStart-up ranking lists areknown businessestoday and many of themhave settled well on the market. For their dreams to come true, innovators need stamina, resilience and the ability to build a strong network. Most European countries have a support system which they can rely on whenitcomestoinnovationandentrepreneurship.Thereisstilladifferencebetweentheefforts of each country’s governments. The EU also has a support system for their participating countries, however not all the European countries are part of the EU.
Good education and support for innovation and entrepreneurship are very important, especially todayasweareimmersedin the fourthindustrial revolution. Today technologyandsoftware are used a lot to make hard work easier, and the role of the human being has increased when it comes to supervising the machines and equipment that do the work that previously was a great effort on the human body. When we look around us we see a lot of new equipment and technology that has, in very few years, become a common part of our everyday lives.
When we look at the big picture, we see that few companies are noticeable over the long term but thereisaconstantflow of newcompanies that shootquicklytothetop. Based on the energy and ideas that we have gotten to know through the CDTMOOC project, we are looking forward to fast progress and opportunities for those who have good ideas and passion to follow them through.

3.1. Finnish design and Fair Trade manufacturer, Finland
Title FinnishdesignandFair Trademanufacturer

Organisation Mifuko
Description
Mifuko companyis a good example of social Entrepreneurship. The mission of the company is not only to manufacture home decor and fashion products but to improve the welfare of women in the rural areas of Kenya. Mifuko is one of the World Fair Trade Organization certified members (WFTO), guaranteeing that the entire business is fair, not just a specific product, ingredient or supply chain. It includes an assessment of the enterprise’s structure, businessmodel, operationsandsupplychains.
Mifuko was founded in 2009 by Minna Impiö and Mari Martikainen, two Finnish designers. Hand-made manufacturing is done by artisan groups with whomthefoundersmeetabouttwiceayear.AMifukolocalconsultantmeets theartisansregularlytwiceaweek.Duringthesemeetings, theyplanmethods for capacity building and business improvements, as well as discuss craft qualityimprovements, healthissuesandenvironmentalsustainability.
Mifuko promotes traditional skills and supports transferring them to the next generations. Mifuko also provides opportunities for the artisans to earn a livelihood.
Success factors
Though Mikuko promotesgender equality and employs artisans of both genders, it specifically focuses on creating opportunities for women in rural villagesinKenya.Theydothisbyworkingwithanetworkofover700artisan producers, including basket makers, carpet weavers, and bag makers and jewellery makers. Over 90% of the artisans Mifuko works with are from a rural background and are economically very disadvantaged. The majority of basketmakersarewomenagedbetween29and70years.
Mifuko maintainslong-termrelationships with the artisan producers. The companyprovides50%advancepaymentonplacedorderstotheartisansand ensures that the payments are passed on to the producers. This way financial securityfor the artisans is ensured. The sourcingofmaterials has its importance. Since 2015, Mifuko has been buying its plastic material from another supplier and providing the artisans with the material directly. TheVAIACube ‘imperfetto’ is an ode to imperfection: it gives us backthe difficult journey of wood from the steepest slopes to the hands of the craftsman and represents the desire to give dignity back to each fallen tree, inatrulycirculareconomy.
Successfactors
The VAIA Cubeimperfettois the full expression of a vision: it embodies aradical approach to the circular process of raw material recovery, which aims at making full use of “waste”. Only in this way, it is possible to fulfil thedesirethatnothingbe leftbehind.
Challenges
Logs felled bythe Vaia stormin the most inaccessible areas are exposed to the elements for prolonged periods, causing blue-green stains to appear in the wood fibre.VAIA teamhas embraced theseimperfections because they believe they are an essential part of Vaia’s story, of the way Nature works. The retrieval of logs in such areas is inevitably more difficult: costs rise, further reducing the chances of salvaging timber that is already scarcely sought-afterduetoitsdefects.

The living lab, open to experiments that involve people as co-designers in open innovation processes, is another major factor in the success of the CARREFOUR NUMÉRIQUE². Challenges
Two major issues have been addressed with the CARREFOUR NUMÉRIQUE²:

Moreover, the start of the CARREFOUR NUMÉRIQUE² happened in the turmoiledperiodoftheeconomicdownturnonaglobalscale.
