Getting the most out of your training investment Training is an important, but often overlooked, part of an overall human resource strategy. At the employee level, it improves skills and assists with motivation and career development. If tackled strategically, a good development programme enables your business to motivate and retain a skilled workforce for now and into the future. Below we have listed some of the benefits of training for both staff and employers. On page 5 you will find some basic tips on how to maximise the results for attendees on any training course.

Great reasons for employers to invest in staff training: STAFF RETENTION • Training and providing personal development opportunities increases job satisfaction, which can assist in staff retention. GREATER PRODUCTIVITY • Training improves the efficiency and effectiveness of your workers, which leads to greater profitability. IMPROVED STAFF MORALE • Staff who feel good about themselves, because they’re learning new things, help to build a positive work culture. IMPROVED SAFETY • Good training helps to prevent accidents.

ADAPTABILITY TO CHANGE • Training stops your people from ‘getting stuck in a rut’. When changes occur, they’ll be able to adapt more quickly, which will help to keep productivity high. POSITIVE ATTITUDE TO MANAGEMENT • Helping your people to gain new skills and knowledge shows that you care. If they like you, they’ll work harder for you. INCREASED CHANCE OF INTERNAL PROMOTION • Training helps to keep knowledge and skills within your organisation and so reduces overall organisational recruitment costs.

Maximising the benefits for attendees: We have put together a few tips that we hope will help attendees maximise their training experience. • Training doesn’t stop when the course ends. We also offer advice, follow-up and consultancy services on all topics within our training and development programme. Our advisers are only a phone call away. • In many of our workshops, interaction and discussion are important elements and therefore the results you take away largely depend upon your contribution. Be an active participant to get the most out of your session. We suggest you sit down with your employer and discuss the benefits of participation and collaboration in these sessions. • Be an active listener and if you have any queries regarding the presentation material, use the question time to seek clarification. Alternatively, if you are not confident doing so in front of other participants, do so during a break or follow-up after the training. Our presenters are on-hand to answer any queries post-session too, so if you find a question has not been answered to your satisfaction please feel free to contact us after the session.

• Be willing to share your experiences, thoughts and ideas with other participants – they too may have the same issues or questions. Participants often comment that the networking with other attendees was just as valuable as the training itself. Add participants to your network of contacts and keep in touch to share common issues and solutions. • Be patient with other attendees – not everyone understands the information first time and some people may require further clarification. Appreciate others’ viewpoints. • Share discussions – let others in the room get their questions and points across. If you feel you need further information, feel free to contact us after the session. • Be punctual – allow yourself plenty of time to find a car park and arrive at least ten minutes before the scheduled start time. • In order to stay comfortable we suggest you dress in layers, as getting the temperature of a room to suit everyone is not always possible.

Cancellation policy

Disclaimer

It’s important to advise us if you wish to cancel or transfer your registration from a training session or a priced event as soon as possible. In many cases there are a maximum number of attendees allowed and we have waiting lists of other members who wish to attend. For this reason, the following cancellation and transfer policy applies to all CECC training sessions and priced events:

Please note, the information contained within this directory is accurate at the time of publication. CECC accepts no responsibility for errors or omissions arising from any cause outside our control. Circumstances beyond the control of Employers’ Chamber may necessitate changes without notice. While every effort is made to minimise the disruption or inconvenience to course participants and their employers, CECC can accept no responsibility for consequential costs associated with such changes.

1. Cancellations or transfer requests must be advised in writing at least three full working days prior to the date of the training session or priced event. Please email registrations@cecc.org.nz or phone (03) 366 5096 as soon as possible if you are unable to attend the course or event you have registered for. 2. All cancellations and transfer requests advised in writing prior to three full working days from the training session or paid event will incur an administration fee of $30.00 (incl GST) per person. There is a limit of one transfer per training course (a second request to transfer will incur an additional full course cost). 3. Where written cancellation advice or a transfer request is not received within three full working days prior to the training session or priced event commencing, or a participant fails to show on the day, full fees will be payable. 4. A replacement participant is welcome at any stage prior to the training session or priced event commencing at no additional cost. Please provide us with the person’s details as soon as possible. Questions relating to the Cancellations and Transfers Policy should be directed to the CECC Training and Events Team at registrations@cecc.org.nz or (03) 366 5096.

Possible changes to dates and times

CECC reserves the right to add, reschedule or replace presenters and/or vary advertised courses, prices and venues. Should a course fail to attract minimum number of attendees, we reserve the right to cancel it.

Complaints procedure If you have a complaint about the Canterbury Employers’ Chamber of Commerce or one of our staff or presenters: 1. In the first instance, raise it with CECC Business Capability Manager on (03) 353 0302 or email richardh@cecc.org.nz who will then decide if the presenter needs to be involved. 2. If it is not resolved, a letter should be addressed to CECC Chief Executive, PO Box 359, Christchurch 8140 or email petert@cecc.org.nz.

Consumer legislation The information in this directory is provided solely for business purposes. Any use of this information or the courses offered will be for business purposes, at the sole discretion, responsibility and judgment of the users. Nothing in this disclaimer purports to contract out of the provision of the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, other than in accordance with Section 43(2) of that Act.

Whilst every effort is made to adhere to the dates and times listed in this directory and in advertised material, due to presenter availability and other factors outside our control, some courses may be subject to change. All attendees will be notified at least three working days prior to the training/event.
