Rehabilitation project for the abandoned town of Sancti Petri

In this project, the architectural inter vention is pertinent as it arises from a

p a r t i c u l a r a n d p e r s o n a l u n d e r s t u n d i n g o f t h e p l a c e - o r o f r e a l i t y. T h e d e t e c t i o n of problems, struggles or deficiencies in the urban and architectural ambit but

also in the cultural, enviromental or political, are opportunities for a proposal. In this specific case, the diagnosis is double:

On the one hand, a town that has been abandoned, and with it, its cultural and

m a t e r i a l l e g a c y. O n t h e o t h e r, a n e n v i r o n m e n t o f g r e a t e c o l o g i c a l v a l u e , threatened by the geomorphological evolution of the Bay of CĂĄdiz.

The challenges the project faces are the following: rescuing a damaged

architectural heritage and giving it a new use -hotel-, which makes it economically viable and which is capable of guaranteeing it a future. In addition, ensur ing a le vel of habitabilit y suitable for such use. But also, with

t h e s a m e e n e r g y, i t i s n e c e s s a r y t o i n c l u d e t h e o t h e r f a m i l y o f u s e r s - t h e b i r d s in the design and ensuring for them a redoubt of the biological, visual and environmental qualities of the disappearing ecosystem.

In short, it is all about preser ving the living heritage of the place, integrating it and sharing with it the resources and intelligences of the architectural project.

The inter vention consists of three main elements: 1- The floor plan, with the design of new pavements that will also house the lighting and installations.

2- A new horizontal structure, which uses the resistance of some walls that have lost m o s t o f t h e l o a d t h e y u s e d t o c a r r y.

MONCLOA 2.0 Update of a representative epicenter

The representative -and in many aspects, effective- epicenter of the leadership of the politic al processes of S pain is loc ated in the Palacio de la Monc loa

complex. Just like many of the political processes, this palace is one of the m o s t o p a q u e p l a c e s i n t h e c i t y.

T h i s a r c h i t e c t u r a l c o m p l e x , a s w e k n o w i t t o d a y, w a s d e s i g n e d b y t h e F r a n c o i s t architect Diego Méndez and built in 1953. Since then, its transformations have responded only to the tastes of their temporar y residents and their needs to project on the building a fictitious image of home.

In this context, it seemed interesting to make an architectural proposal for the Palacio de la Monc loa in Madr id.

The first part of the project is a research, since there is hardly any accessible information about this place. The

second

part

the

work

involves

imagining

desirable

proposals,

c o m p a t i b l e w i t h b o t h i n s t i t u t i o n a l a n d r e s i d e n t i a l a c t i v i t y, a l t h o u g h n o t necessarily

coherent

with

each

o t h e r.

The

proposals

were

meant

architecturalize spanish politic al concepts -such as the “citiz en agenc y ”, the

“ c o n t r o l b o d y ” , t h e “ t r a n s p a r e n c y o f i n f o r m a t i o n” o r t h e " p a r t y o f d e m o c r a c y 2 . A final line of work consists on determining the capacity of the Complex to be

compacted, based on the indispensability or not of the different elements that make it up. The pur pose is to obtain a frame of r igor and realism that allows

the development of the rest of proposals -or of any other possible- within a s p e c i f i c g r a d i e n t o f f l e x i b i l i t y.

ALGARROBICO Conversion of an illegal hotel into a livable town

This project started with the discover y of the huge and illegal Algarrobico

Hotel as an opportunity for architectural inter vention. The proposal was made from the premise of utilizing an economic, material and environmental investment that was already irreversible.

We p r o p o s e d t o t r a n s f o r m a b u i l d i n g o f e n o r m o u s d i m e n s i o n s a n d s t r u c t u r a l f l e x i b i l i t y i n t o a n i n h a b i t e d t o w n . We b e l i e v e d t h a t t h r o u g h t h i s c o n v e r s i o n a

controversial building like Algar robico could be redeemed. But beside the i d e o l o g i c a l , t h i s p r o j e c t a l s o p r e s e n t e d a p o s s i b l e r e a l i t y, s i n c e t h e t o o l s t h a t we used (subtraction, addition, change of use ...) could have been applied.

The solution was intended to be realistic and desirable, keeping much of what

was already built but solving the hardness of the building's image and its unlink from the natural environment in which it was located.

LOS MOLINOS Proposal for the adaptive reuse of a public building in Los Molinos This proposal faces the conversion of the former school "Divino Maestro" into

a c u l t u r a l c e n t e r. We i n t e r v e n e o n t h e b u i l d i n g t o i n c r e a s e i t s s p a t i a l r i c h n e s s , improve its thermodynamic behavior and expand its functional possibilities, respecting its current exterior appearance.
