SERIO LEADS THE PACK AS GOLF SEASON BEGINS AT FURNACE BAY

By Sam Dixon

PERRYVILLE - Karina Serio has been putting in the work this summer and is off to an impressive start of her senior season. Serio has been the Tome School’s Golf Team’s ace the past three years. While many athletes play several sports throughout the year, Serio is out on the golf course year round working on her game. This week we saw how the constant work pays off as Serio opened the 2023 High School Golf Season with a 39 at Furnace Bay in Perryville. She finished 5 strokes ahead of Perryville’s Andrew Kidd who finished with a 44. While she feels she left a few shots out on the course she exhibited a positive outlook on the day, “I’m happy just knowing I’m improving,” Serio said. “Because at the end of the day, I’m not here competing against any other golfer. I’m competing against myself. It’s me versus me, I want to be a better player and better person than I was yesterday.” While most golfers in

the county are looking to a season ending at the State Tournament, Serio’s season will end with the County Championships on October 11th at Back Creek Golf Club in Middletown, DE as the Tome School does not play in the MPSSAA State Tournament. In the fall we usually see athletes start to announce college commitments and where they will continue their academic studies. For now, Serio is not revealing any future plans other than she does intend to attend college and hopefully continue to play golf at the collegiate level. A total of 22 golfers from Perryville, Tome, Elkton and Bohemia Manor competed in the event including 2022 All County Golfers Jared Eldreth, Braden Paris and Andrew Kidd. The Tome School will return to Furnace Bay on August 28 to play against Perryville, Elkton and Aberdeen. Bohemia Manor will play on August 29 at Winters Run Golf Club against Patterson Mill and Havre de Grace.

Former Cecil College baseball player heads Clemson University pitching staff

NORTH EAST, Md.: When mentoring young athletes to reach their full potential, it is vital to have a coach who believes in every word or bit of advice they offer. Jimmy Belanger is a true enthusiast of the game of baseball, and the intricate nuances of

his coaching style illustrate his commitment to the team. Belanger recently completed his first season as the pitching coach for the Clemson University baseball team, where he turned a group of young men into one of the best pitching staffs in NCAA Division I baseball. The Tigers finished the 2023 season with a 44-19 record, their best since 2018. Clemson had a 4.30 ERA, 19th in the nation, and the 604 strikeouts were fourth most in their school history. “It was easy to trust him early on,” said Clemson redshirt junior closer Ryan Ammons. “He demands excellence as he has an absolute love for this game. He has an absolute love for pitching. And it’s easy to get behind a guy like that when you believe what he’s say-

ing.” Belanger has loved the game of baseball from the time he played Little League. That intensity carried him through his scholastic career at North Babylon High School in Long Island and with the Bayside Yankees, an AAU travel team. While he had the intensity, he lacked the control to progress to the next level. It was through a chance meeting during a summer tournament in Delaware with the Bayside Yankees that Belanger met Brian August, a then assistant coach at Cecil College. Having recently graduated high school, he was in a state of limbo for his next steps when August invited him to tour Cecil College’s North East Campus. “I had some small divi-

sion I schools in the Northeast looking at me, but nothing serious. I realized that I needed to go to a two-year school academically and needed to grow up like most high school kids need to do,” said Belanger. “Attending Cecil College definitely helped me in my development as a pitcher and as a student. Doing something like that, especially where I was in my development, drastically helped me grow physically and mentally.” Belanger played the 2005 and 2006 seasons for Cecil College and graduated with an associate degree in general studies. Attending a community college opened doors for Belanger as the University of Louisville recruited him.

The Power of Explanation: Guiding Kids Towards Better Choices By Aaron Rouselle Children are naturally curious beings, constantly seeking answers to satisfy their insatiable thirst for knowledge. As parents or caregivers, it is crucial to recognize the importance of explaining things to kids rather than resorting to dismissive responses such as "no" or "just because." In this blog post, we will delve into why it is essential to provide explanations to children, particularly when discussing topics like drug and alcohol use, gun safety, and the influence of peers. By offering them understanding and guiding them towards informed decisions, we empower them to make better choices and navigate the complexities of life. 1. Curiosity and the Need for Explanation: Children possess an innate curiosity that drives them to seek answers. When we dismiss their questions with simple answers or vague statements, we stifle their ability to fully comprehend the world around them. Instead, by taking the time to explain complex topics in an age-appropriate manner, we satisfy their curiosity and nurture their thirst for knowledge.

es: Explaining why certain behaviors, such as drug and alcohol use, are harmful, empowers children to make informed choices. By providing them with accurate information about the potential consequences, both immediate and long-term, we equip them with the knowledge necessary to resist peer pressure and make decisions that prioritize their well-being. 3. Fostering a Culture of Open Dialogue: When we explain things to children, we create a culture of open dialogue and trust. By actively engaging in conversations about sensitive topics like drug and alcohol use, gun safety, or the influence of certain individuals, we encourage children to approach us when they have questions or concerns. This open dialogue allows us to guide them effectively and address any misconceptions they may have.

4. Promoting Critical Thinking and Decision-Making Skills: When we explain the reasoning behind rules and restrictions, we promote critical thinking and decision-making skills in children. By offering them logical explanations, we encourage them to evaluate situations, under2. Empowering Kids to stand potential risks, and Make Informed Choic- make choices based on

sound judgment rather than blind obedience. This empowers them to develop independence and responsibility. 5. Mitigating Curiosity's Potential Risks: Curiosity, when left unsatisfied, can lead children to seek answers elsewhere, potentially exposing them to incorrect information or risky behaviors. By providing explanations, we ensure that children receive accurate and reliable information from a trusted source. This reduces the likelihood of them seeking answers from unreliable or potentially harmful sources.

Children's curiosity drives their desire to understand the world around them. As parents or caregivers, it is our responsibility to embrace and nurture this curiosity by explaining complex topics to them. By doing so, we empower them to make informed choices, foster open dialogue, promote critical thinking, and mitigate the potential risks of unsatisfied curiosity. So, next time a child asks, "Why?", take the opportunity to provide them with explanations that will guide them towards a better understanding of the world and help them make choices that lead to a brighter future.
