PERRYVILLE MAKES A SPLASH JOPPA - It was an exciting night on Wednesday for Perryville High School as the Perryville Panthers returned to pool for the first time since 2020. The Panthers had one swimmer in the 20192020 season but have not had any swim competitors since until tonight. The 2023-2024 Panthers have a team of seven swimmers now and five of those swimmers made their debut tonight at Magnolia Middle School against Joppatowne, Patterson Mill and Bohemia Manor. Grace Scott (pictured above), Madyson Burham, Logan Enfield, Madison Wasilewski, and Adrianna Deplitch will compete again on Monday Dec 11 at Edgewood Middle School against Bel Air, Edgewood and Bohemia Manor. Bohemia Manor has two swimmers this season. Skye Kammerzelt and Gavin Rogers make up the Eagles team. Good luck Panthers and Eagles on a great 2023-2024 season.

CECIL COLLEGE NEWS:

Fornwalt named to CSC 30 Under 30

NORTH EAST, Md: Adam Fornwalt, the assistant director of athletics & sports information at his alma mater, Cecil College, has been named to the College Sports Communicators 30 Under 30 Class of 2023. The honor recognizes emerging athletics communications professionals at all levels of college sports in strategic, creative, and digital spaces. “I am honored to be selected for the College Sports Communicators 30 Under 30 award. This achievement is a testament to all the hard work that my staff have put in over the last six years. My career has been shaped by the guidance of mentors like Todd Wetmore, Brian Howard, and Mark Winkel. Their patience, wisdom, and belief in me have fueled my growth in this field. Special thanks to Bill Smith, David Spiegel, Hillary Fisher, and Rebecca Volk for being great colleagues and friends,” said Fornwalt. Fornwalt has served in various roles during his professional career, both in sports information and onair in the broadcasting world. While serving as Liberty’s athletic communications assistant, he hosted the campus radio station. He won four Associated Press of the Virginias awards for his work across three different sports talk shows. “It is truly an honor to be

recognized by the CSC 30 Under 30,” said Cecil Athletic Director Ed Durham. “For Adam to be recognized by his peers shows his commitment and dedication to his profession. Getting his start at Harford and further advancing himself at Cecil shows his progress, and he continues developing new ideas. All this while taking on more and more responsibility. Adam has been a great asset to our department here at Cecil.” Fornwalt has made his mark at the NJCAA level throughout his career with the Seahawks and his past role at Harford Community College (Md.). In his four years at Harford, he was the primary media contact, handling sports information and game operations duties for all 13 programs. Under his leadership, the department was named 2YSIDA Sports Information Department of the Month in November 2021. During his time at Cecil, Fornwalt has taken on more responsibility with the nine NJCAA-sponsored programs. He also has added academic support to his many roles as an administrator. “I would like to thank Cecil College President Dr. Mary Bolt, Dr. Kim Joyce, and Ed Durham for their leadership and belief in me. I am proud to call Cecil Col-

lege my home,” Fornwalt added. He has been featured as part of a CSC Member spotlight from back in January, where Fornwalt said his favorite memories included seeing the Harford Community College baseball team make the JUCO World Series as well as seeing the women’s lacrosse team win the NJCAA National Championship. A 2018 graduate of Liberty University in Sport Management and a 2015 graduate of Cecil College with an associate degree in visual communication, Fornwalt has shown off his versatility in his past and current roles. He also has a certificate in Sports Broadcasting from the Broadcasting Institute of Maryland. “The CSC 30 Under 30 class of 2023 is an outstanding representation of the tremendous young and diverse, strategic and creative talent we have in our organization at all levels of college sports,” 2023-24 CSC President John Paquette said. “The 30 Under 30 is among the most popular member recognition programs CSC offers because it is special recognition by your peers. We are grateful to the Young Professionals Committee for its hard work organizing the program. Congratulations to all of our deserving winners.”

Cecil College seeks students interested in Eisenhower Transportation grants

NORTH EAST, Md: Cecil College is looking for students interested in the 20242025 Dwight D. Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship (DDETFP) grant worth up to $5,000. This grant supports students pursuing a degree in various academic fields that advance the nation’s transportation industry. Students must be enrolled full-time in an accredited program for the 2024–2025 academic year with a plan of study in one or more transportation-related disciplines. Grant awardees will participate in Cecil College’s DDETFP Research Cohort, which includes attending the annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board. The goal of the DDETFP is to attract the nation’s brightest minds to the field of transportation. Students who are planning to enter the transportation profession after completing their education can pursue a degree in engineering and non-engineering disciplines, including the sciences, business, psychology, engineering, and supply chain management. Fellowship awards are based on rankings made by the Federal Highway Administration with the recommendations of the

DDETFP Selection Panel at Cecil College. Fellowship recipients have traditionally received up to $1,500 to be used toward attending the Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) of the National Academies in Washington, D.C., which will take place in January 2025. In past years, a maximum of $5,000 was awarded to cover tuition, mandatory fees, TRB attendance or some combination of the three. Each awardee will have the option of distributing their award amounts into each category as they see fit. The Federal Highway Administration supports the Dwight D. Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program grant. To learn more about the Dwight D. Eisenhower Transportation Fellowship Program, contact Cecil College’s Competition Program Manager, Mark Krysiak, at mkrysiak@cecil.edu and include “DDETFP Question” in the subject line. Tome Titans defeat North East Indians 46-32 Photos By Karina Serio

By Karina Serio

NORTH EAST - Facing a losing streak dating back to 2015, the Tome School looked to defend its home court against visiting North East Wednesday night. The Titans spotted the In-

dians two points thanks to a technical foul before the tipoff and fell behind early. Once the Cleveland Smith coached team got rolling, North East had no answer. After breaking out in the first period, Tome cruised to a 46-32 win.

“We're building off of team camaraderie, working together, communicating, and just all in all. Just learning how to face adversity and close out,” said firstyear coach Smith. “Learning how to finish.” Sophomores Her-

ald Beljour and Layton Le put the Titans in front with three first frame three-pointers and fellow sophomore Spencer Cain dominated the paint on both ends to keep the Indians at a double-digit deficit the rest of the way. Cain had spurts in his freshman season where he blocked opponents shots in bunches and this night proved a continuation of that form. In addition to 17 points from the floor, Cain added 13 rebounds, four steals and four blocks. “We are just trying to play as a team, don't be selfish and just win,” said Cain. “We've been doing lots of conditioning. Our goal is to be able to play for the full four quarters and not get tired and just run the floor.” Beljour and Le added nine and eight points for Tome in the win. Justin MacMillan scored 11 to lead North East scorers. The win moved Tome to a 4-0 start on the season and dropped the Indians record to 0-2 to start the season.

RISING SUN TIGERS WIN KNIGHTMARE INVITATIONAL Photos By Sam Dixon

PARKVILLE, MD - The Rising Sun Tigers Wrestling Team was the team to beat this weekend at the Knightmare Invitational in Parkville, Maryland. Going into the semifinal rounds on Saturday the Tigers had nine wrestlers still wrestling for the championship out of the 13 weight classes they had entered. After the semifinals had concluded the Tigers had seven wrestlers moving on to the Finals and only two moved to the consolation bracket to wrestle for 3rd place. The Tigers had a 26 point advantage going into

the finals over Calvert Hall but the lead would hold as Rising Sun went on to win it’s first team tournament in over a decade. “The individual wins are great but taking the team champion trophy back to Rising Sun is what we have been working for” said Tigers Head Coach Seth Garvin. Tyler Garvin won outstanding lightweight award and his brother Zach Garvin won the outstanding middle weight award as voted on by the coaches. Rising Sun finally has a full roster to be competitive as a team in the State Tour-

nament. While Tyler Garvin is going for his third individual State Championship, the rest of the Tigers roster has a wrestler at almost every weight class who should be on the mat in March at the Show Palace. The Tigers next tournament will be December 27 & 28 in Westminster, MD during the Christmas break. Tyler Garvin and Mason Testerman are both expecting to achieve their 100th High School win at the Westminster Tournament.
