PANTHERS BATTLE THE MINERS IN STATE SEMIFINAL Drug Free Cecil Hosts Youth Leadership Summit for Middle Schoolers
Written by Brady Martin Grade 11/ PVHS Student Leader, Drug Free Cecil Youth Coalition NORTH EASTStudent leaders representing every high school in the county hosted the annual Drug
Free Cecil Youth Leadership Summit. The event was held at the Sandy Hill Camp and Retreat Center in North East. The high schoolers arrived on Tuesday morning and spent the week listening to speeches from mo-
tivational speakers, taking classes about drug abuse prevention, and having fun with karaoke nights and a western themed dance party. The summit, organized by the dedicated members of the Drug Free Cecil Youth
Coalition, aimed to empower and equip students with the skills needed to be successful leaders and prevent drug abuse in our communities. Additionally, each school had the opportunity to design billboards that will be put up on route 40 and PSAs that will be played on local comcast networks. After three days of learning, hard work, and fun, most of the high schoolers went back home, while a select group of student leaders remained behind to extend the impact to the middle school level. Over 80 7th and 8th grade students had the chance to visit the camp for a day and listen to presentations from the student leaders. The Drug Free Cecil Youth Coalition student leaders have spent the past few months preparing pre-
sentations for the summit. Lessons were given about marijuana, advertising, mental health, over-thecounter medication, and refusal skills. Each student leader was responsible for leading a variety of activities and presentations. In preparation for the summit, the student leaders spent countless hours researching their topics and practicing their presentations. After listening to the presentations, the middle schoolers were tasked with creating PSA posters to be displayed in schools around the county. They researched statistics relevant to drug abuse prevention and creatively designed posters topics ranging from prescription opioid abuse in injured athletes to alcohol consumption at parties. It wasn’t all just sitting
in lectures and designing posters though, the students had plenty of time to play and enjoy the facilities at Sandy Hill. They had time to play basketball and gaga ball, as well as a variety of team building games in the gymnasium. The summit concluded Friday evening, with the teens sufficiently exhausted from all the week’s activities. The summit not only gave our students the tools they need to succeed as up and coming leaders, but it also showcased their dedication to combating drug abuse in our community. The Drug Free Cecil Youth Leadership Summit stands as a testament to the commitment of these young leaders to effect positive change in their community and beyond.

Near freezing temperatures and a holiday weekend didn’t keep the Perryville Cheer Squad from traveling the near 200 miles to Frostburg on Friday to cheer on the Panthers in the State Semifinals contest against the Mountain Ridge Miners. Fortunately this year was not a repeat of 2021 at Mountain Ridge when it was snowing and a 3 degree wind chill. The Panthers Cheerleaders were out by the field then and this year they again followed their Panthers Football to the last game of the season.

CECIL COLLEGE NEWS:
Cecil College Vice President Dr. Dryer receives high honor NORTH EAST, Md. – For more than a decade, the Cecil College nursing program has ranked among the best in Maryland for nursing programs. This success is possible through the dedication and commitment of the program’s faculty and staff, who receive just as much committed support from the head of the academic division at the College. Starting in 2007, first as Director of Nursing, then Dean of Nursing and Health Profession and since 2016, that support has been provided by Vice President of Academic Programs Dr. Christy Dryer, who has been the steward of excellence for the nursing program and an advocate for the Associate of Science degree in Nursing and the Practical Nursing Certificate on local, state and national levels. This dedication made her the ideal recipient of the Bobbie Anderson Leadership Award presented by the Organization for Associate Degree in Nursing (OADN). The Bobbie Anderson Leadership Award honors the inaugural president of the OADN, the national voice and a pivotal resource for community college nursing education and the associate degree pathway, which promotes leadership, collaboration, and advocacy to enrich further nursing education and the communities they serve. Anderson was the catalyst behind the movement to deliver quality health care. This prestigious award is presented annually to an educator or nursing program administrator who has demonstrated exceptional leadership within their institution, community, and at the state and national levels. “I was honored to be recognized for my work regarding associate degree nursing. I remain passionate about this outstanding pathway into the profession, providing an avenue for individuals who otherwise may not be able to become a nurse, while also meeting our region’s workforce and health care needs,” said Dr. Dryer. Under Dr. Dryer’s guidance, Cecil College has procured a faculty of exceptional educators whose commitment and focus is student success. Led by Dean of Health, Human and Business Services Dr. Nancy Norman-Marzella, the nursing faculty includes Assistant Director of Nursing Dr. Roxanne Rash, Associate Professor Dr. Lauren Dawson, Assistant Professor Amy Smythe, Professor Dr. Shirley Gharbin, Associate Professor Mary Knarr, and Professor Dr. Cynthia Horton. With four of six full-time faculty holding doctorate credentials, there are also an additional 11 adjunct instructors with advanced degrees who are full-time practitioners in the discipline of nursing. Another ingredient for the program’s success is the curriculum, which incorporates theory and practice into
each nursing course. This learning formula provides students with a hands-on approach regarding experience, beginning in the first semester. “Many factors contribute to our program’s success over the years. First are our hard-working students and faculty. Next is the structure of our curriculum, where our theory courses are tied to students’ clinicals to develop competencies through explanatory activities and practice. What students learn in class, they apply in clinical at the same time,” says Dean of Health and Human Services Dr. Nancy Norman-Marzella. Providing one of the leading two-year nursing programs in Maryland, Cecil College is at the forefront of addressing the national nursing workforce shortage. Related to a the combination of burnout from the COVID-19 pandemic and an aging population in the health care workforce, skilled nursing graduates, are vital for tomorrow’s workforce. The median age of a Registered Nurse (RN) is 52 years old, with 19 percent of R.N.s aged 65 or older, according to the U.S. Department of Labor statistics. In response to the nursing workforce needs, Cecil College has also started an accelerated associate degree nursing program, providing another pathway into the profession of nursing for individuals who already hold a degree in another field and want to transition into nursing. “Community College nursing programs are critical to meeting the workforce need for nurses in Maryland. Cecil College is preparing nurses to meet the challenges of today’s healthcare environment,” said Cecil College President Dr. Mary Way Bolt. In the 2021 academic year, 48 percent of nursing graduates were from Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) programs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Bureau projects that more than 275,000 additional nurses are needed from 2020 to 2030 and that employment opportunities for nurses will grow nine percent faster than all other occupations from 2016 through 2026. Dr. Dryer’s leadership ensures Cecil College’s nursing program meets or exceeds the Maryland State Board of Nursing standards and is nationally accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). Cecil College is regionally accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). This commitment to excellence is reflected in the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN exam) class success rates for Cecil College. Along with a 100 percent pass-rate for cohorts in 2018, 2019, and 2022, Ce-
cil’s nursing pass-rate was above the 90 percent mark from 2015 to 2023. Nursing graduates work in many fields, from critical care and home healthcare to surgical environments with approximately 20 percent going on to pursue their bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing before seeking employment, according to Dr. Nancy Norman-Marzella As an advocate for associate degree in nursing programs and ADN graduates, Dr. Dryer emphasizes that an associate degree in nursing provides a quality education and an affordable pathway into the nursing profession and often lays the groundwork for future education as many hospital systems and healthcare facilities provide financial assistance for nurses to complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) and beyond. An added benefit is ADN graduates can take the licensing exam and start working in the field within two years upon successful completion of the program. Located within 10 miles of Delaware and Pennsylvania borders, Cecil College is a regional workforce provider in healthcare.

Written by: Isa Woehr 11th grade student/EHS Student Leader @ Drug Free Cecil Last week was the seventh annual Youth Leadership Summit hosted by Drug Free Cecil. 71 students identified as student leaders from all five high schools (Bo Manor, Elkton, Rising Sun, Northeast, Perryville,) arrived Tuesday morning at the Sandy Hill Camp & Retreat Center in Northeast. Each year, students attend the summit to learn about and gain leadership skills that they return to their schools and community. They also meet with their Drug Free Cecil school clubs to create a prevention campaign consisting of a billboard that will be featured along route 40, and a PSA featured on Comcast. Throughout the week, students participated in educational sessions that covered a variety of topics such as mental health, leadership, and prevention to name a few. They were also able to participate in team building activities at Sandy Hill’s rope courses, including climbing a rock wall to the top of a tower, walking along a horizontal ladder suspended midair, and climbing a wooden pole to jump off the top of. Along with these fun team building exercises, students were able wrap up the night with a hoedown dance party, a bonfire with s’mores, and a karaoke party. Among all of the week’s fun, it was also extremely educational. On day one, students learned about becoming a leader from the county’s superintendent, Dr. Jeffrey Lawson, refusal skills, belonging, persuasive messaging, mental health, and the basics of prevention. The belonging lesson, taught by school social workers, was extremely interesting, as we learned that those who feel a strong sense of connectedness are
66% less likely to experience long term health risks, leading us to think about what we can do to foster belonging in our community. On Wednesday, students participated in sessions including leadership, mental health, and decision making/ peer pressure. Our session on decision making and peer pressure, led by our prevention educators, encouraged students to explore the effects of either attending or not attending a party they knew would have illegal substances. Amongst groups, every person was affected, whether it was getting into a car crash from a drunk driver, or failing an English project due to a partner being hungover. At the end of the night, students heard from Kevin Green about each individual’s unique strengths. Although Thursday was the last day of the summit, the day’s activities did not disappoint. By the end of the week, most schools had finalized their ideas for their campaign, and even began filming for their PSAs. During the day, students had their last mental health sessions, learned about advertising, fentanyl, connections, and more leadership sessions. Despite everyone’s tiredness, sessions were still full of completely engaged students. Dean Miles Dean of Cecil College came to teach about connection, encouraging students to think about their goals and the way they interacted with others. By 5, it was time for the high schoolers to depart home. As the week ended, knowledge about prevention and leadership was not the only thing students left with, as they were able to learn more about themselves and form relationships with others. We can’t wait to see what next year brings.

PANTHERS SEASON ENDS AT MOUNTAIN RIDGE
FROSTBURG, MD - It was clear from the opening kickoff Perryville was going to have an uphill battle on the road in the State Semifinal against Mountain Ridge. After being stopped twice to start the game, the Panthers spotted the Miners a 33-0 halftime lead and never recovered. Perryville's playoff run ended with a 40-14 loss and Mountain Ridge returns to the 1A title game for a third straight time. Mountain Ridge won the coin toss and deferred,
giving Perryville a chance to make a statement to start the game. Instead, the Panthers went three-and-out, punted, forced a fumble on the Miner's first play, recovered it, go a do-over opening drive, went three-and-out again, and surrendered the first of 5 first half touchdowns. The Panthers would manage to get into the endzone twice in the final four minutes of the game with two receiving touchdowns by Jayden Byard and Josiah Rose.
