CECIL COLLEGE NEWS:

Dr. Fundack joins national committee to support criminal justice students

NORTH EAST, Md: The Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS) has elected Cecil College’s Ashley Fundack, Ph.D., to be the Northeastern Regional Counselor on a national steering committee that will examine and research effective techniques for skill building, curriculum, student development, and instruction for criminal justice programs on the community college level. As an associate professor of criminal justice at Cecil College, Dr. Fundack’s expertise in the field has made her an ideal candidate for exploring the expectations, emotions, and narrative construction that educators must perfect. As the Northeastern Regional Counselor on the ACJS’s Community Colleges Section (CCS), Dr. Fundack will work with fellow counselors to serve the interests of students, promote community colleges, develop a criminal justice professional standard body of knowledge through research and theory development, and serve as a resource for interaction between academic sectors to enhance criminal justice education. “It is truly an honor and privilege to be elected to this opportunity and serve such a wonderful academic organization that fosters continued education and research,” said Dr. Fundack, who has attended ACJS conferences to present research projects completed by her Criminal Justice students at Cecil College. “Due to lasting professional relationships, collegiality, and opportunities provided to both me and my students, I am honored to serve the Community Colleges Section and ACJS to advance the criminal justice field and give back to an organization that has been instrumental in my career development.” This opportunity permits her to work with the CCS president, executive board members, and regional counselors to develop and share best teaching practices. Dr. Fundack will officially take her post in March and serve for two years.

Cecil College hosts Mind, Body & Spirit Festival

The CCS counsel will gather and evaluate proposals to develop methods that best support students as they build their careers either as practitioners or in academia. They also serve as a resource to foster, encourage and share innovative and creative practice, teaching efforts among members to help build best classroom strategies for teaching criminal justice courses and provide a bridge between the passionate work of our members and the needs of local, state, and federal communities and policymakers as they face the reforms needed to create a fair, inclusive, and functional justice system. “This will be significant for Cecil College’s criminal justice program and me. It allows me to work with instructors from all over the country, share the best practices getting our program out there and allow me to grow as an instructor,” said Dr. Fundack

Lynch leads Lady Tigers in 51-14 victory over Indians By Kevin Phillips

NORTH EAST–After dropping its previous two games, Rising Sun looked to get back on the winning track as it traveled down Route 272 to face host North East in nondivisional UCBAC girls’ basketball action Thursday night. The Tigers struggled a bit on the offensive end of the floor, but their defense

was stout throughout in whatever defensive formation they tried, allowing just five field goals in a 51-14 victory over the Indians. “We rebounded pretty well. Especially because we don’t have as much size as they do,” Rising Sun head coach Kathy Stoudt said. “But we were able to get steals off of our press, get back to a half-court defense, and get out on their shoot-

ers, not giving them the three-point shots they could hit. We went to the man-toman defense in the second half, and we were able to hold them that way too.” The Tigers jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first quarter, only to see North East score five unanswered points to tie the game at 7-7, but Rising Sun responded by scoring the final six points of the frame to take a

13-7 lead. Continuing its strong play from the end of the first quarter, the Tigers took control of the game of the second when it outscored the Indians 15-2 in the frame and built a 28-9 lead at halftime, and Madi Cleary paced the Rising Sun in the second quarter with six points. “I kind of had confidence and followed the ball, and my teammates cheering me

on helped,” Cleary said of her strong second quarter. The Tigers put the game out of reach in the third quarter as they outscored North East 18-5 in the frame to build a 46-14 lead, and they cruised to victory in the fourth quarter to end a twogame losing skid. Rising Sun said one of the goals coming into the game was that they wanted to get back to a posi-

tive mindset, which was achieved with the win. “It’s definitely a great feeling to get those losses out of the way and get back into the mindset of winning,” Watters said. Jordan Lynch paced the Tigers with 14 points while Watters finished with 11, and the Indians got a teamhigh five points from Kierstyn Lagano.

Bohemia Manor Eagles bounce back with 67-50 win over North East Indians Photos by Nathan Kline

By Kevin Phillips

NORTH EAST–After giving up 165 points in its previous two games, Bohemia Manor head coach Sandy Grimes decided to switch up his defense to the full court press going into its UCBAC Susquehanna Division boys’ basketball battle against host North East. While Grimes was not totally pleased with the output, the Eagles did show improvement on the defensive end as they forced more turnovers and created more transition baskets in a 67-50 victory over the Indians Friday night. “Not very effectively. We played half-court the last two games and gave 92

and 73. We can’t play defense, so we might as well press and force turnovers,” Grimes said of Bo Manor’s overall defensive effort. “We need to improve rebounding. We cannot keep people in front of us.” The switch to the full court pressed proved to be fruitful in the first quarter as the Eagles opened the game on a 10-4 run, which was powered by forcing turnovers and easy transition baskets, and Ayden Holderer paced the run with eight of his team-high 23 points. Holder said the switch to the full-court was a way for Bo Manor to dictate the game’s tempo. “I think that’s pretty

much the game plan for every game. We like to set the tone and try to run people out of the gym,” Holderer said. The Indians adjusted to the press and used the Eagles’ aggressiveness against them by getting to the free throw line, scoring nine points from the charity stripe to cut the deficit to 19-15 at the end of the first quarter. Bo Manor’s defense bounced back by forcing turnovers and limiting North East to just five points on one field goal in the second quarter as the Eagles pulled away to a 36-20 lead at halftime. Bo Manor held the Indians at bay throughout the

second half as its lead never dropped below 10 points in the final 16 minutes, responding to any charge North East had with a run of its own, and Holderer said the Eagles’ ability to bounce back is a result of their ability to work together. “We have good chemistry, so we just pass it around, get in the middle, get kick outs for three, and get open for the shots,” Holderer said. Bo Manor got 17 and 10 points from Landon Horsey and Dougie Sample respectively while the Indians got 23 points from Justin MacMillan and 10 from Chase Clark.

Panthers top Tigers 89-58

Photos by Karina Serio

By Kevin Phillips

PERRYVILLE–Perryville entered its UCBAC boys’ basketball battle against visiting Rising Sun knowing that it had the size advantage inside the paint in center Andrew Clark. The Panthers exploited that size advantage as Clark exploded for a team-high 28 points as they also found space for their long-range shooters in an 89-58 victory over the Tigers Friday night. “Absolutely, I have two point guards on the floor who are unbelievable decision makers. They executed the plan, and they knew we had a matchup advantage down there,” Perryville head coach Ron Kidd said when asked about his team’s size advantage. “It started with the holiday tournament when we could get the ball down low. There aren’t many 6’7” kids down here, and he really helps us with what he does down low.” The Panthers established the fast-paced tempo from the outset with backto-back three pointers from Sean Beard and Devon Clore to make it 6-0, and those three pointers opened up space for Clark as he scored eight points in the frame to help Perryville jump pit to an 18-9 lead after one quarter. Clark continued to im-

pose his will in the second quarter as he scored 12 points, all from close range, to help the Panthers outscore Rising Sun 27-21 in the quarter and extend the lead to 45-30, and Clark credits his teammates for getting him the ball in the best position to score. “My point guards were able to get me the ball on the screen and roll, and I could get the ball wherever I wanted,” Clark said. Perryville pulled away in the third quarter as it employed a more balanced offensive attack in the third quarter as Clark, Clore, and Beard combined for 16 points in the frame to help the Panthers build a 68-47 lead through 24 minutes. One of the reasons why Perryville pulled away in the third quarter was it held Rising Sun’s Wyatt McDowell scoreless in the frame by making him move from his spot after McDowell scored 17 of his team-high 19 points in the second quarter. “We are familiar with him. He’s a really strong player. He made some great shots. We made him move his feet,” Kidd said. “It was a focus of our adjustments at halftime to take him away. I’m pretty sure he did not make another three pointer.” The Panthers scored 21 points in the fourth quar-

ter to finish with 89 points, setting a season high, and Clark said it was a total team effort to get to that total. “We passed to each other a lot, got the rebounds, hit the threes today, and we were balling,” Clark said. “They were smaller, so we

could get the post-up game and cuts well today.” Beard and Clore finished with 18 and 13 points respectively for Perryville, and the Tigers got 13 points from Brandon Cech.

Tri-State Crusaders cruise to 75-55 win over Tome Titans photos by Sam Dixon

By Kevin Phillips

NORTH EAST–Tri-State Christian Academy head coach Chris Scarbro deployed a different starting lineup than usual to check the cohesiveness of the team in an Mid-Atlantic Independent League boys’ basketball contest against host Tome School. With the score tied midway through the second quarter, Scarbro put the regular rotation on the floor, and it paid off as the Crusaders’ press wreaked havoc, forcing turnovers and

putting the Titans into foul trouble, and that lead to TriState scoring 10 of the half’s last twelve points to take the lead for good. The Crusaders pulled away in the second half thanks to taking advantage of that foul trouble en route to 75-55 win over Tome. “Last year, we came out and were up 37-6. I sat one or two of my starters and let a couple of bench players play. The defensive intensity and capability wasn’t where it normally would be,” Scarbro said. “We went into the second half with our normal

starters and went into what we needed to go into, and the cohesiveness was there as a unit. That’s what basketball is about. We’re in game 15, and it’s about being cohesive.” Tri-State entered the second quarter with a 1915 lead over the Titans, and the team proceeded to exchange the lead several times over the next couple minutes, resulting in a 3131 tie midway through the quarter. From there, the Crusaders picked up the intensity on the press, which caused

turnovers; and while the turnovers did result in field goals, it forced the Titans to commit fouls and send TriState to the foul line. As a result, the Crusaders scored their next seven points from the charity stripe, and the quarter closing 10-2 run was punctuated by a Jackson Sartin three-pointer that made the score 41-33 going into halftime. “When we talk about getting those free throws at the end of the second quarter, we started putting man-to-man, full-court pressure,” Scarbro said. “When

we picked up the press, we made them throw the ball away or go to a spot they didn’t want to go. Then, we got steals and got fouled, and we got to the line.” Tri-State’s lead fluctuated between eight and 13 points in the third quarter, taking an 11-point advantage at 54-43 entering the final frame. When the Titans pulled to within 59-50 early in the fourth quarter, the Crusaders put the game out of reach at 75-50 with a 16-0 run, and Sartin said it was Tri-State’s defense that pro-

pelled the offensive surge. “It started with defense in the second half. The defense forced turnovers, which led to fast break layups,” Sartin, who had 33 points, said. “That led to us having more energy on offense and get down hill.” Sam Falko added 23 points while Jeremiah Falko chipped in 9 for the Crusaders, and Spencer Cain had 15 to lead Tome with Leyton Le and Herold Beljour Jr. contributed 13 and 12 points respectively.
