PANTHERS DEFEAT COUGARS 73-56

PERRYVILLE–Perryville entered the second half nursing a six-point lead thanks to 15 combined points from Sean Beard and Andrew Clark over visiting Fallston in the teams’ UC-

BAC boys’ basketball battle Friday night. With the Cougars focusing on limiting Beard and Clark in the second half, space opened up for the Panthers’ shooters such as Devon Clore, who scored 11 points in quarter, which al-

lowed Perryville to pull away quickly to earn a 73-56 victory over Fallston. “(The Cougars) were leaving the three open because they were trying to contain the drives, so I was able to spot up,” Clore, who finished with 18 points, said.

After the Panthers entered the third quarter with a 28-22 lead, Fallston cut its deficit to 28-25 on a Brody Fitzkee three pointer, but that was as the Cougars got, as Perryville responded with a 20-5 to take control of the game.

Clore paced the run with nine points, all on three pointers, as Perryville did whatever it wanted to do on both sides of the floor, forcing turnovers on the defensive end executing its fullcourt and half-court set on the offensive side.

“I think it was due to us pushing the pace on defense and great shooting from the outside,” Sean Beard said of the Panthers’ strong start of the second half. “We took advantage continued on A-4

everybody helped each other out because without help and backup, we might not have won this game,” the Panthers’ Taylor White said. White led the charge for Perryville in the first quarter as she scored eight of her game-high 28 points in the continued on A-6

DBO Clore’s offensive spark against Fallston this week was a major factor in the Panthers victory over the Cougars.

A key to the Panthers’ strong game this week against C. Milton Wright was the play of Zoey Graves, who scored 14 points, and Coach Osbourne said Graves exploited holes in the Mustangs’ zone defense. “She is the tempo of the game. She managed those games in the 2-3 zone in the beginning of the game, and when see those gaps, she took advantage of them,” Osbourne said of Graves’ play.

CECIL COLLEGE NEWS:

Food Pantries available for Cecil College students

NORTH EAST, Md: Cecil College has enhanced its proactive approach to tackling food insecurity for students by partnering with the Maryland Food Bank and the Cecil College Foundation to expand services. According to the Maryland Food Bank database, 11.4 percent of Cecil County residents are at or below the federal poverty level, with more than 11 percent of the population facing food insecurity. That means 11,370 individuals may not know when their next meal will be, according to the data. “We work hard at Cecil College to remove barriers for students so they can focus on their academics. The Student Life team has done an excellent job expanding the Campus Food Pantry Program. They understand we serve the whole person. If a student is hungry, they’re not going to perform well in class, and our ultimate goal is student success,” said Vice President of Student Service Dr. Kimberly Joyce. For more than a decade, Cecil College has maintained food pantries in several locations on the North East and Elkton Station campuses. These “Grab-n-Go” stations provide students quick meal options such as microwavable mac-n-cheese, ravioli, stew, oatmeal, and soups. There are also items such as cereal bars, fruit cups, and other snacks. To reach more of the student population, Cecil College expanded the locations of the food pantries this fall to each building. To accompany food items, the Student Life Office provides plastic utensils, napkins, paper plates, and bowls. Donations to the

food pantries are also made by faculty and staff members. The food pantries are maintained by the Student Life Office and also include personal hygiene products. “The feedback from our students let us know there was a need for the hygiene products, especially the feminine hygiene products because they are so expensive,” said Director of Student Life Cheryl Davis-Robinson. “We have received multiple letters of appreciation from students for providing feminine hygiene products in the restrooms on the North East and Elkton Station campuses. In addition to the quick Grab-n-Go items, the partnership with the Maryland Food Bank led to the launch of “Groceries-n-Go” programs this fall that provide a complete meal for the student and their family. The “Groceries-n-Go” program serves 40 – 50 students weekly. Bags of groceries are stocked with soup broth, produce, flour, potatoes, cereal, rice, and spaghetti. There are also fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy products, and frozen chicken. “It has been helpful for our students who have families. They have groceries to take home that ensures their kids are able to eat over the weekend and during college breaks,” said Dr. Joyce. In conjunction with these two programs, Cecil College has partnered with Maryland Department of Human Services to train six employees as SNAP (Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program) coaches. These

volunteers assist students in navigating the application process when applying for food stamps. When the College is out of session, many of its students still face food insecurity. To assist them, the Student Life Office has established the Cecil Care Cards program, funded through donations to the Cecil College Foundation. These Cecil Care Cards are gift cards to Walmart, where students can purchase food items when classes are not in session. Cecil College’s faculty and staff are aware of the community’s needs, and many

volunteer to help address food insecurity. Professor of Art Lauren Vanni has been a catalyst for the Empty Bowls fundraising campaign for many years, which provides 60,000 meals annually in Newark, Delaware, for senior citizens and that program carries over into Cecil County. “Our goal is to have no one go without a meal of some sort. Anyone who wants a snack can grab it from one of the stations without asking or make themselves a bowl of soup. We are here for them,” said Davis-Robinson.

of their weak ball-handlers, got out in transition, and got easy buckets.” By the end of the third quarter, Perryville had built a 60-40 lead as a result of outscoring Fallston 32-18 in the frame. The Panthers continued its offensive rhythm into the fourth quarter to pull away for the victory with head coach Ron Kidd saying Clore’s offensive spark was a major factor to the victory. “We made a little bit of

a switch with our defensive approach at halftime and picked up the tempo on offense,” Kidd said. “Devo Clore came in and absolutely changed the way we were playing, and he got the pace to something that we really wanted to do. That was the game-changer for us.” Beard scored a gamehigh 21 points for the Panthers with Clark adding 16 points, and Beard said Perryville having three players score at least 16 points is a result of how the team distributes the ball.

“We always try to find the open man and find mismatches. That’s normal for us,” Beard said. “It’s great to have multiple players in double digits. We share the ball, and everyone gets their buckets.” Fallston got 13 points from Max Ruckert and 10 points from Oliver Ruckert.

frame, and point guard Zoey Graves also chipped in eight points in the first quarter. Panther head coach Lexi Osbourne liked the attention to detail and energy her team came out with, and that showed up on the defensive end with the press defense, forcing turnovers and preventing the Mustangs from getting into their half-court set. “I think we came out really focused and came out with energy,” Osbourne

said. “That’s what it takes for us. We’ve been working on the press. We’ve been practicing a lot. They were excited to come out tonight.” Perryville continued to play well on defense in the second quarter, outscoring C.M. Wright 11-7 in the frame to build a 40-9 halftime lead, and the Panthers’ lead was never threatened the rest of the way to cruise for the victory. Another key to the Panthers’ strong game was the play of Graves, who scored 14 points, and Osbourne

said Graves exploited holes in the Mustangs’ zone defense. “She is the tempo of the game. She managed those games in the 2-3 zone in the beginning of the game, and when see those gaps, she took advantage of them,” Osbourne said of Graves’ play. Carsyn Hulbert scored 10 points to give Perryville three players in double figures while C.M. Wright got a team-high 18 points from Sam Wolfkill.

American Unity on Display on Wreaths Across America Day

Photos by Scott Serio

ARLINGTON - National Wreaths Across America Day took place at over 4,225 participating locations across the country, including Arlington National Cemetery, on Saturday, December 16, 2023. Volunteers remembered our nation’s heroes as they said their names aloud, honoring over three million veterans this

year. Wreaths Across America would like to thank the communities, dedicated volunteers, and generous sponsors for coming together in unity and supporting those who have protected our freedom. Each person has played a part in the year-long mission to Remember the fallen, Honor

those who serve, and Teach the next generation the value of freedom. “What I love most about this day, and this mission, is that it is so much more than just the placement of a wreath. The wreath is the catalyst, it brings together communities - families and strangers -- to learn about those who have served

and sacrificed,” said Karen Worcester, executive director, Wreaths Across America. “We have more than three million volunteers across the country and a third of them are children. This mission and the events happening today provide the opportunity to teach kids about what freedom is.” For centuries, fresh ev-

ergreens have been used to symbolize honor and a living tribute renewed annually. Wreaths Across America believes the tradition represents a living memorial that honors veterans, active-duty military, and their families. When volunteers say the name of a veteran aloud while placing a wreath, it ensures they live
