O’CONNOR JUMPS INTO RECORD BOOKS AT MARYLAND 5STAR FAIR HILL, MD - Ranked at 55th in the world coming into Maryland Five-Star 3-Day Event, Austin O’Connor posted the only double-clear round in the Stadium Jumping final vault into the lead to become the first Irish eventer ever to win at the sport’s highest level. The top-ranked eventer in the world had another chance to claim the top, but it wasn’t meant to be. With a rail in hand as the
last to jump in the final, Oliver Townend knocked down back-to-back rails and watched his title hopes slip into O’Connor and Colorado Blue’s grasp. Earlier in the year, the 2021 Olympic tandem of O’Connor and Colorado Blue made history at Badminton in England with the first-ever podium placement for Ireland. They one-upped that performance on a windy fall afternoon at the Special
Event Zone in Fair Hill. Sitting in 12th place after the Dressage Test, O’Connor only picked up 1.2 time faults over the Cross Country Test on Saturday to jump into fourth position and set up Sunday’s victory. This marked Townend’s third straight podium finish is as many attempts in the Maryland 5-Star. Townend has the lead heading into show jumping in the inaugural Five-Star and dropped
rail there to finish second. He finished third last year. Caroline Pamucku and HSH Connor captured the three-star section of the event this weekend.
Pamucku sat in first place after the Dressage Test and needed back-to-back double clear rounds in the Cross Country Test and the Stadium Jumping Final on
Saturday and Sunday to stay in front to claim the win. Maryland’s Five-Star is one of only two in the United States and seven worldwide.

Austin O’Connor Secures First Five-Star Win For Ireland in 58 Years Capping a Fantastic MARS Maryland 5 Star Caroline Pamukcu and HSH Connor Come Out on Top in USEF Eventing CCI3*-L National Championship
Fair Hill, Maryland – Austin O’Connor (IRL) secured the first CCI5*-L victory by an Irish rider in nearly six decades, jumping up from fourth place at the start of Sunday’s show jumping finale and catapulting to the top of the leaderboard with longtime partner Colorado Blue at the 2023 MARS Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill presented by Brown Advisory. The three-time Olympian sealed the deal to break the longstanding Irish drought with a mistake-free round on Sunday, jumping clear and finishing on a final total score of 34.9. Five-time British Olympic veteran William Fox-Pitt (GBR) and Grafennacht finished in second place on a final score of 35.3, while World No. 1 Oliver Townend (GBR) and Cooley Rosalent took third place with a 37.1 after dropping two rails during their round to add eight faults to their final score. Hannah Sue Hollberg (USA), was the highest-placing American, finishing fourth on a 40.0. Colorado Blue, a 2009 Great Britain Sport Horse owned by The Salty Syndicate, has been a consistent staple in O’Connor’s string, having competed in three CCI5*-L events since 2022, as well as at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, and the 2022 FEI Eventing World Championships. The pair were trailblazers around yesterday’s cross-country track, which they navigated with efficiency and grit, tackling all of the
difficult combinations, coming in just barely over the time. “He’s an unbelievable horse. He’s a proper, proper five-star event horse,” said O’Connor, and added, “He always looked a good horse, but I guess a bit like myself, with age he’s just got better. Or lucky. He’s 85% Thoroughbred—he’s all blood, he’s all class, he’s all heart, and he’ll try and try and try to the bitter end.” Rerouting from Burghley after retiring on cross-country, O’Connor made the decision to come to Maryland with “Salty” and give it his all to try and capture his first CCI5*-L victory. “Maryland (5 Star) committee member, Tim Gardner, who when I was having a little bit of a down moment at Burghley, put his arm around me and said, ‘You gotta bring Salty to Maryland.’ He was the man that convinced us to come here and I believed him and I’m delighted.” Caroline Pamukcu and HSH Connor led from start to finish in the 2023 USEF Eventing CCI3*-L National Championship, completing on their first-phase score of 25.4. HSH Connor, an impressive 2016 Irish Sport horse gelding owned by Pamukcu, Sherrie Martin, and Luann McElduff, has won three consecutive FEI events during the 2023 season, beginning in April. This is the eleventh international win this year for Pamukcu, the most of any rider in the
world. Strong in all three phases, HSH Connor is one for the future for Pamukcu, who heads off to represent the United States at the 2023 Pan American Games this week, and she is excited to have such a talented string of horses coming up through the ranks. “It’s so emotional because I’ve had the horse since he was a four-yearold, and it’s one of those things where there’s such a big community behind me,” said Pamukcu. “It’s emotional because you remem-
ber his first jump school, his first flat school, and then all the way to this moment. We were so close to winning the Young Horse World Championships in Le Lion d’Angers last year, that for him to win the USEF CCI3* National Championship is amazing.” Lauren Nicholson (The Plains, Va.) and Larcot Z, a Zangersheide gelding owned by Jacqueline Mars, finished in second on a 28.6, just adding .4 time penalties from cross-country to their dressage score, but jumping clean in the main arena on
Sunday. Local competitor Savannah Fulton (Finksburg, Md.) and Cash Point, a 2015 Holsteiner gelding owned by Nelson Warnell, jumped up the leaderboard after a strong cross-country round on Saturday and a clear effort on Sunday in the final phase to capture third place on a 31.4. The MARS Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill presented by Brown Advisory, one of only two 5 Star level equestrian events of its kind in the United States and just the seventh worldwide, is being held at the Fair Hill Special Event Zone in Cecil County, MD, October 18-22. The event’s prestigious 5 Star (CCI5*-L) designation is the pinnacle of the Olympic sport of eventing, often described as an equestrian triathlon. In addition to the fivestar competition (CCI5*-L), the event also features a three-star competition (CCI3*-L), which serves as the USEF CCI3*-L Eventing National Championship, and The Dutta Corp. USEA Young Event Horse East Coast Championships presented by Dubarry of Ireland. The four days of eventing competition feature dressage (Thu-Fri), cross-country (Sat) showcasing Ian Stark-designed courses, and jumping (Sun). “Thank you to all of our fine sponsors for making the Maryland 5 Star possible again this year, especially MARS Equestrian™
and Brown Advisory,” said Jeff Newman, President & CEO of the Maryland 5 Star Committee. “We had terrific weather, and enthusiastic crowds throughout the weekend and a course (by designer Ian Stark) that proved to be beautiful and challenging enough to give these world-class riders and their horses the ultimate test. Thank you to the FEI riders and officials for coming from around the world to help lay the ground work for this event, to the staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly to get it off the ground, and our fans who continue to show us amazing support every year. We look forward to seeing everyone back out at Fair Hill and in Cecil County in 2024.” The 3 Star and 5 Star awards ceremonies were presented by Korbel California Champagne. Full Results The entire CCI5* was available via livestream through USEF Network for domestic viewers, Horse & Country TV for viewers outside of North America, and via Maryland Public Television. World No. 1 Oliver Townend Carries Lead Into Final Day of Competition at MARS Maryland 5 Star presented by Brown Advisory Caroline Pamukcu and HSH Connor Eye USEF Eventing CCI3*-L National Championship
Fair Hill, Maryland – October 21, 2023 – Oliver Townend (GBR) and Cooley Rosalent held their overnight lead looking ahead to Sunday’s final phase following an influential day of cross-country at the MARS Maryland 5 Star presented by Brown Advisory. Ian Stark’s track proved challenging and a proper test of the CCI5*-L combinations, with 16 combinations moving forward to the second horse inspection tomorrow. The legendary William Fox-Pitt (GBR), with 14 career CCI5* wins to his credit (more than any other rider), sat in second place aboard Grafennacht, while the United States’ own Mia Farley, in her first CCI5*-L, made a massive jump up the leaderboard aboard Phelps. “First, I’ve enjoyed Maryland full-stop—I think that it’s Jeff [Newman] and the team, Cecil County, and the sponsors Mars and Brown Advisory do an incredible job to pull this together and it’s a huge privilege for our sport to have another 5 Star of this standard,” said Townend. “I know that Ian [Stark] has
tweaked his course and he’s tweaked it into a true 5 Star, and probably one of the toughest 5 Stars in the world right now I think that’s what the sport needs and to attract the riders from overseas…the great footing for the horses, the amazing staging, the list goes on and on. It has really gone the direction that we hoped and hasn’t disappointed in any way, shape, or form.” Cooley Rosalent looked keen with Townend piloting from the irons, making efficient work of the massive track, though a few hairy moments towards the end of the course kept the crowd on their toes, with the pair adding just six time faults to their score to put them on 29.1. It’s tight at the top though, and they will not have a rail in hand in the jumping, as Fox-Pitt and Grafennacht are just behind them, sitting on a 31.3. Both Cooley Rosalent, a 2014 Irish Sport Horse mare owned by Paul Ridgeon, and Grafennacht, a 2012 Oldenburg mare owned by Amanda Gould, are two of the top mares in the world
and contesting their second CCI5*-L of the 2023 at the Maryland 5 Star this year. In her debut CCI5*-L, Farley wowed with Phelps, a 2013 Thoroughbred gelding owned by David O’Connor, taking all of the direct options on course and cruising through the finish to stay on their dressage score of 32.9. “When I started, I just wanted to get to the finish line, and Phelps did that for me,” said Farley. “I think what I learned about him today is that he’s a true fighter. When I wasn’t fully there for him, he was like ‘It’s Ok, I’ve got you,’ and it was a wonderful feeling for him to kind of step in and take over the reins.” The pair were the only combination to finish double clear, stopping the clock in 11 minutes and 10 seconds on the dot to nail the optimum time. Farley becomes the first U.S. rider in over a decade since Daniel Clasing at Kentucky to make the time in their first ever fivestar appearance. In the USEF Eventing CCI3*-L National Champi-
onship, Caroline Pamukcu (Miami Beach, Fla.) and HSH Connor, a 2016 Irish Sport Horse gelding owned by Pamukcu, Sherrie Martin, and Luann McElduff, continue to hold the lead after cross-country. The pair finished well under the optimum time to stay on their dressage score of 25.4, and are one step closer to securing the 2023 USEF CCI3*-L National Championship. Pamukcu, who has been riding in numerous divisions this week, also piloted HSH Tolan King, a 2015 Irish Sport Horse gelding owned by Pamukcu, Sherrie Martin, and Derek Strine, to a clear cross-country round to stay in third on a 29.0. Lauren Nicholson (The Plains,
Va.) and Larcot Z, a 2013 Warmblood gelding owned by Jacqueline Mars, were efficient with their round and are in second place on 28.6. The MARS Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill presented by Brown Advisory, one of only two 5 Star level equestrian events of its kind in the United States and just the seventh worldwide is being held at the Fair Hill Special Event Zone in Cecil County, MD, October 18-22. The event’s prestigious 5 Star (CCI5*-L) designation is the pinnacle of the Olympic sport of eventing, often described as an equestrian triathlon. In addition to the fivestar competition (CCI5*-L), the event also features a three-star competition
(CCI3*-L), which serves as the USEF CCI3*-L Eventing National Championship, and The Dutta Corp. USEA Young Event Horse East Coast Championships presented by Dubarry of Ireland. The four days of eventing competition feature dressage (Thu-Fri), cross-country (Sat) showcasing Ian Stark-designed courses, and jumping (Sun). The event was streamed via USEF Network for domestic viewers, Horse & Country TV for viewers outside of North America, and via Maryland Public Television.

Oliver Townend Takes Over Lead in MARS Maryland 5 Star presented by Brown Advisory As Field Looks Ahead to Challenging Cross-Country Phase Caroline Pamacku Looks to Stay Ahead in USEF Eventing CCI3*-L National Championship After Dominant Dressage Test with HSH Connor
Fair Hill, Maryland – October 20, 2023 – Oliver Townend (GBR), the number one rider in the world, moved to the top of the leaderboard after a phenomenal test aboard Cooley Rosalent. The pair produced a show-stopping test earning a 23.1, in the pair’s second CCI5*-L together. Piggy March and Brookfield Cavalier Cruise drop to second place with their 24.2, with William FoxPitt (GBR) and Grafennacht moving into the top three on a 26.1. “Couldn’t tell you how happy I am with Cooley Rosalent,” said Townend. “Obviously, she’s still very young and inexperienced at this level, but she’s done everything that we’ve ever asked of her at the level below and I love coming here to Maryland, I’ve had good experiences the last couple of years. Excited to bring her here and see how she coped.” Once again, conditions at the venue were top notch, leading to the impressive outing from Townend and “Rosie”. “I couldn’t give the team here at Maryland and Cecil County enough credit,” said
Townend. “Everything is as you wish a 5 Star to be. It’s incredible what they’ve achieved in such a short space of time with MARS and Brown Advisory the sponsors, it’s just so special to be at a venue like this and full credit goes to the team.” Cooley Rosalent and Townend have one other start at the 5* level, which came this past summer at the Longines Luhmuhlen CCI5*-L where they finished in the top 30. Cooley Rosalent is a 2014 Irish Sport Horse mare owned by Paul Ridgeon and was most recently the 9YO champion at the Blenheim CCI4*-S in the U.K. this past September, besting a field of 90 entries. Boyd Martin (USA) is currently the highest-placed U.S. rider heading into the second phase tomorrow, earning a personal best 28.8 aboard Contessa, a 2009 Holsteiner mare owned by Club Contessa. Cross-country for the CCI5*-L will begin tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. ET following the finish of the CCI3*-L division, which begins at 9:30 a.m. ET. In the USEF Eventing CCI3*-L National Champi-
onship, Caroline Pamacku (Miami Beach, Fla.) and HSH Connor saved the best for last, taking over the lead as the last combination in the division, earning a 25.4, for a significant lead heading into the cross-country phase tomorrow. Lauren Nicholson (The Plains, Va.) piloted her second mount, Larcot Z, a 2013 Warmblood gelding owned by Jacqueline Mars, to a strong score of 28.2 for second place. Taren Hoffos (San Diego, Calif.) and Regalla, a 2011 Oldenburg mare owned by Carolyn Hoffos, round out the top three after the conclusion of today, on a 28.6. The Dutta Corp. USEA Young Event Horse 4 & 5YO Championships - East Coast presented by Dubarry Ireland concluded an exciting two-days of competition showcasing the next generation of equine talent coming through the levels in the United States. Caroline Pamacku and HSH Afterglow took top honors in the 4YO division, finishing on a final score of 90.27, besting 35 other entries. HSH Afterglow is a 2019 Irish Sport Horse gelding (Hype x Ringwood Genius) owned
by Sherrie Martin and bred by Peter Leonard. Boyd Martin (Cochranville, Pa.) took first in The Dutta Corp. USEA Young Event Horse 5YO Championships - East Coast, taking the win aboard Schmick, who was champion last year in the 4YO division. Schmick is a 2018 Zangersheide gelding (Luigi d’Elipse x Winter Lady) owned by Anne Hennessey and bred by Chris Brems, and finished on a final total of 92.82 from the judges, and scoring a ten for general impression, the only
perfect score in the division. The MARS Maryland 5 Star at Fair Hill presented by Brown Advisory, one of only two 5 Star level equestrian events of its kind in the United States and just the seventh worldwide, returns to the Fair Hill Special Event Zone in Cecil County, MD, October 18-22. The event’s prestigious 5 Star (CCI5*-L) designation is the pinnacle of the Olympic sport of eventing, often described as an equestrian triathlon. In addition to the fivestar competition (CCI5*-L),

PANTHERS HEATING UP FOR PLAYOFF RUN
By Kevin Phillips
CHESAPEAKE CITY-Perryville put its stamp on the game early with a touchdown on its opening possession against rival Bohemia Manor in UCBAC Football action Thursday night. The Panthers never looked back after the opening possession as they
scored on their first five drives, and their defense and special teams did the rest, shutting down the Eagles throughout in a 42-2 road victory. “I think we played with tremendous effort on offense, defense, and special teams,” Perryville head coach Sean Sandora said. “We came out ear-
ly and scored on our first possession. Defensively, we stopped them, and the blocked punt by Cameron Kestner was crucial. Then, we continued to build off of that. I was really proud of the way we executed tonight in all three phases of the game.” The Panthers promptly worked their way down the
field on the first possession of the game and capped a 5-play, 75-yard drive with a five-yard touchdown run by Ethen Gunter, and the extra point made it 7-0 just 2:30 into the game. After Kestner’s blocked punt which gave Perryville the ball at the Bo Manor 35, Gunter scored his second touchdown of the game two
plays later on a 14 yard run; and Gunter gushed over how well his offensive line played against Bo Manor. “The offensive line was solid tonight. We have Cy McCall at the guard now, and Jordan Coupling at tight end helps a lot,” Gunter said. “I was seeing them flowing over the ball, and I was just trying to find the holes and
pick them.” The Eagles drove down to the Perryville 23-yard line on their second possession, but the drive stalled, forcing a field goal attempt. However, the Panthers blocked the field goal to preserve the two-touchdown lead. Perryville scored on

PANTHERS HEATING UP FOR PLAYOFF RUN its third straight possession when Jayden Byard took the handoff on a jet sweep and raced his way to the endzone for a 64-yard touchdown to make it 21-0 with 10:13 left in the second quarter. On the Panthers’ fourth possession of the game, Ty Patchell connected with Kyle Richards for a 35-yard touchdown pass to make it 28-0, and Sandora said one
reason for Perryville’s offensive outburst is its versatility. “I think our offensive line blocked tremendously up front. I knew that they would be a four-to-five man front. We hit our gaps,” Sandora said. “Ethen ran the ball well and hit holes and got vertical. When they load the box, it’s one-on-one on the perimeter, and we have some guys that can catch the ball, make a move and get by the defense.” Perryville caught a
break when it recovered the ensuing kickoff at the Eagle 1, and after a 15-yard penalty on the Panthers, Gunter scored his third touchdown of the game on a 16-yard run, which was followed by a successful extra point to make it 35-0. The Eagles got on the board late in the second quarter when the Panthers snapped the ball out of bounds on a punt to make the score 35-2, which was the score going into half-
time. Perryville capped the scoring midway through the third quarter when Byard picked off a pass and returned to the endzone for a 45-yard touchdown, and Byard said he knew had to attack the ball in order to get the interception. “I saw the receiver cut, so I broke to a spot. I saw that he was taller than me, so I knew that I had to jump with him and get the ball,” Byard said.
Gunter says the way the Panthers played against Bo Manor could mean good things for them as they head into the final weekend of the regular season and into the playoffs. “It’s good because it’s going to give everybody that feeling of ‘maybe we have something going especially this late in the season.’ We’re finally got things rolling, and it gives us confidence going late in the season,” Gunter said.

Cecil Volleyball hosts Northern Virginia for Sophomore Night
By Kevin Phillips
NORTH EAST–Cecil College battled with visiting Northern Virginia Community College for four tight sets in non-divisional volleyball action Thursday evening. The Seahawks were competitive in all four sets but fell to the Battlehawks 3-1 (25-21, 25-16, 20-25,
25-18), but despite the loss, they took positives from the game. “There were a lot of positives. I thought they played really well together on the court and off the court,” Cecil head coach Eden Barton said. “We passed phenomenally tonight. The little things caught up to us in an evenly matched game.”
The Seahawks controlled the tempo for the first two-thirds of the opening set as they jumped out to an 18-13 lead, but Northern Virginia found its rhythm and closed the frame on a 12-3 run to take it 25-21 and build a 1-0 lead in the match. The second set was tight early as the teams were tied at 6-6, but the Bat-
tlehawks went on a 7-2 to take the lead, steadily pulling away for a 25-16 victory and taking a 2-0 lead in the match. Cecil went into the third game wanting to avoid the sweep and battled Northern Virginia in a back-and-forth contest as both teams went on several runs, resulting in nine ties and six lead chang-
es, and the Seahwaks had the final run of the set as it went on a 9-2 run to end the frame and earn a 25-20 victory, extending the match to a fourth set. “We just took the momentum from the loss in the second game. Nobody likes to lose in the third,” Barton said of how Cecil won the third game. “They wanted
to be here for five sets, and I think they were geared up for that one.” The fourth game played out similarly as the second as it was tight early with the score tied at 9-9 midway through before the Battlehawks scored three straight points to take a 12-9 lead,

Historical Society of Cecil County:
D7
Victorian Table Settings
Cecil College hosts Leadercast 2023
With the holidays approaching, the Historical Society of Cecil County is hosting a Farm & Table Market that will give you the opportunity to purchase unique items for your table and homemade delicacies to satisfy your tastebuds. In Victorian times the laying of the table was an essential part of a successful holiday celebration. An elegant table was a must have as well as the quality of the food. Table décor followed the latest fashions and changed over time. You needed to know the proper types of tablecloths, how the silverware was placed, what were appropriate floral decoration and what china and glassware to use. An essential part of any Victorian dinner party (or any other party that involved food) was the laying of the table. An elegant table was every bit as important as the quality of food that would be served thereon. And as with any other aspect of Victorian life, table decor was a matter of fashion, changing over time. One needed to know what types of cloths to use, how to arrange the silverware, what types of floral decorations were appropriate both for the event and for the season, what china and glassware to use, and more. Victorians had a dish for everything. Bone dishes are crescent- or moon-shaped ceramic dishes that were placed at the left-hand edge of the dinner plate. They were used to collect bones, seeds or peelings. The dish’s shape allowed the diner to place it at his chin for easy removal of the inedible items. Bone dishes were most popular in the 1800s and early 1900s and were often given as wedding gifts. Salt cellars were made to hold and dispense salt and were made of glass, ceramic, silver, pewter, wood and plastic. Salt cellars were used before salt became refined and have been found among Greek and Roman artifacts. During the Middle Ages, elaborate master salt cellars were placed at the head of the table, and the master of the house would dispense salt into the smaller cellars. By the early 1800s, small individual salts were commonly found in homes. They were set at the top of each individual table place setting. Tiny spoons were used to sprinkle the salt. Anti-caking agents were added to salt by 1911 and individual salt cellars were replaced by salt shakers. Butter pats are 3-inchround dishes used to hold pats of butter and were first made in the mid-1800s, but were most popular during the Victorian period. The pat of butter would sometimes be stamped with a family crest. They were set to the left of the table setting. As years have gone by table setting and décor has become more casual, however during the holidays it is still fun to outfit a table with all of the elegant accoutrements of days gone by. The Historical Society is happy to provide you with the opportunity to shop from our local artisans and farmers. There will also be plenty of vintage and antique items for sale. Please make it a point to visit our Farm and Table Market on November 4th from 10:00 A.M. – 4:00 P.M. at 135 East Main St., Elkton.
