BOLZ LEADS TIGERS TO 1-0 VICTORY OVER ELKS

RISING SUN - The Rising Sun Tigers improved to 6-0 on Thursday continuing their undefeated season with a 1-0 victory over the Elkton Golden Elks. Until this week the Lady Tigers had only faced opponents from Harford

County. They racked up victories against North Harford, Havre de Grace, Joppatowne, and Aberdeen but the biggest win they have had so far this season would be against Bel Air. The Bel Air Girls defeated Perryville 2-0 ending

their undefeated season. All eyes have been on Perryville up until now while new Head Coach Katie Tosh has been having an incredible first season flying off the radar. However the secret is out now and Rising Sun is

a week away from hosting the Perryville Panthers in a must see game between the top 2 teams in the county. First however, the Tigers need to get past Bohemia Manor on Tuesday and then Edgewood is scheduled for Oct 5 which will be

the Tigers Senior Night. The remaining six games for the Tigers include Bohemia Manor, Edgewood, Perryville, Harford Tech, Fallston, and North East. Perryville and Fallston will both be played at home and games that students

and fans should make sure to come out to support. Regional rankings for 1A and 2A teams can be found on page A-3.

Faced with a fourth and long, a Warrior incomplete pass was erased after a late pass interference call. The Panther defense stood strong and forced an incomplete pass, again, with Havre de Grace racing third

and long. That defensive stoppage was also erased after a flag was thrown for roughing the passer. With new life breathed into their comeback bid, Havre de Grace received was the beneficiary of an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty a few plays later to keep

Havre de Grace Warriors capture Susky Bowl Championship, ending the Perryville Panthers streak continued from A-1

the eventual game-winning drive alive. In total, the Panthers were saddled with 10 penalties on the night that cost them 115 yards, drive-ending plays and 43yard touchdown pass. The penalties overshadowed an otherwise outstanding performance by the Panthers in their attempt to retain the Susky Bowl. In response to an opening drive score by the Warriors, Perryville responded imme-

diately with their own scoring drive, punctuated by a 10-yard touchdown rumble by Ethen Gunter. The Panthers responded again to a Warrior touchdown on the ensuing kickoff with Kyle Richards touchdown. Perryville edged in front on another Gunter rushing score. Havre de Grace edged closer for a 21-17 deficit with a field goal as time expired in the half. Jordan Jones put the Panthers ahead by 11 midway through the third quar-

ter with a 55-yard touchdown run. Havre de Grace responded quickly to close the score to 28-24. The defenses stymied each other until the game-winning drive. Gunter led the Panthers with 94 yards rushing on 16 carries, with two rushing scores. Richards and Tyshaun Johnson led Perryville with seven tackles each. Ben Clark had two of the five defensive sacks for the Panthers.

Annual Cecil County Invite held in Meadow Park By: Katie Callaghan and Sarah Villatoro ELKTON - While rain continued to fall at Meadow Park on Tuesday, September 26, Cecil County runners laced up their shoes ready to race at the annual Cecil County Invite. Despite the gloomy weather, the race was full of much success and ran smoothly thanks to the help of Bohemia Manor and Elkton High Schools. With cloudy skies and bright smiles, all 5 Cecil County schools had runners step up to the line, ready to battle it out in friendly competition. Cecil County athletes performed extraordinarily and with much success. Many athletes were even able to set personal or season records. In Girls team results, Rising Sun’s girls took first with a score of 26 points. They were followed by Bohemia Manor who took second with 59 points. Elkton High followed in third place with a score of 67 points. In Boys team results, Bohemia

Manor’s boys placed first with a score of 20 points. Rising Sun followed, placing third with 50 points. North East earned a score of 89 points, placing third. Milburn Stone Theatre Gallery hosts 2023 Alumni Spotlight Exhibition NORTH EAST, MD.: With the feel of fall in the air, Cecil College highlights the skillful artwork of three Art and Design alums in the 2023 Alumni Spotlight Exhibition hosted in the Milburn Stone Gallery. Featured artists are Jessi Cooke, Callie Dowe, and Sam Braun. This exhibition will be on display through January 26, and the public will be able to meet the artists during a reception on Friday, Oct. 20, from 6 – 8 p.m. in the lobby of the Milburn Stone Theatre. This show explores the combination of paint and clay as they combine to create a visual experience of texture, color, and imagination. Jessica Cooke discovered her passion when she first placed her hands in wet clay in the ceramic studio at Cecil College’s Elkton Station. The feel of the raw materials squeezing between her fingers, followed by the

provocation of being able to form her thoughts and imagination into a three-dimensional object, is inspirational. “Painting has been a passion my whole life. But if I hadn’t decided to attend Cecil College, I would never have discovered my love for working with clay and the empowerment it instills,” said Cooke, a 2018 North East High School graduate. “I now know the direction I wish for my life.” The culmination of these two passions was displayed this summer in her first-ever public exhibition, Memory Garden. In her work, she uses sentimentality as a love letter for old childhood memories and to seek closure from inevitable realities. Cooke explores nostalgia, grief, forgiveness, and layered identity through detailed paintings and playful ceramics. Cooke earned an Associate of Fine Arts

degree from Cecil College and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Salisbury University. Samantha Braun was born in Rising Sun, Maryland, and was introduced to ceramics in high school. Braun graduated from Cecil College with an Associate of Fine Arts and from Salisbury University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Historical Society of Cecil County:

Pierson’s Grove School 1872 – 1916 By Beth Boulden Moore In the 19th and early 20th centuries, most Cecil County public school students attended a one-room schoolhouse. Cecil County was dotted with one-room school houses. One school house, just outside of Elkton, did double duty. Pierson’s Grove School was located on the north side of Ricketts Mill Road on land owned by Mrs. Beulah Pierson, widow of Mr. Jesse E. Pierson. John Squier, the county superintendent of schools, negotiated with Mrs. Pierson to lease property on which to build a new school. In 1872, a one-room, wood frame, modest sized school house was built on the property. Pierson’s Grove School was built to replace an earlier school called the Ricketts School, which closed in 1869. That school had existed since before 1858 when each Cecil County school was independent. The school stood on the Harry Biddle farm, near the intersection of Walnut Lane and Ricketts Mill Road. A Miss Mary E. Wingate was

the teacher there in 1868. All of the elementary school aged children in the area attended school there. “The Star”, a hand-written school newspaper from May 1882, contains the names of some of those pupils. M. Jaquette, H.P. Ricketts, Portia Pennington, H.J. Smith, Hattie Logan, Florence Salmon, Carrie Smith, Eliza Pennington, Bessie Manly, and John Salmon all contributed essays, reports, and poems to the newspaper. There was even a social event column – news of a sled ride into Elkton and the wedding of Annie Rambo and Mr. H. Webb are described. The May 31, 1884 issue of the Cecil Whig lists the names and results of the school examinations of the pupils of Pierson’s Grove School. Mollie Jaquette earned a 100% in geography, a 99% in spelling, a 100% in history, a 98% in grammar, and a 98% in arithmetic. Harry P. Ricketts earned a 98% in history, a 77% in spelling and was absent for all the other exams. In the late 1800s, the school began doing double

duty as a “satellite” Sunday School for Elkton Presbyterian Church. The children who attended the school during the week used the same building to go to Sunday School in the spring, summer, and fall. Many of

those who attended considered the building to be their church, and did not get to the main church in town very often. On one Sunday a month, Elkton Presbyterian’s pastor conducted a regular service there. The Reverends Heberton, Beers, Osmond, and McElmoyle conducted these services. There were also times when the students presented programs at the church, special occasions when the horses were hitched to the wagons or buggies and everyone came to town for the big affair. The Elkton Presbyterian Church directory for 1885 shows that there were 45 students enrolled in the Pierson’s Grove Sunday School. Reuben Jamar was the Sunday School superintendent, Frank Pennington was the secretary-treasurer, and Fannie Pennington

was the organist. In 1897, Margaret (Maggie) Gilpin was the superintendent, Robert Jaquette, Jr. was the secretary, David Gilpin was the treasurer and Stella Collins was the organist. The year 1901 found Henry McCullough was the superintendent and Margaret Gilpin was the assistant superintendent. These officers were different from those who served the same function for the Sunday School held at the East Main Street church. One of the last teachers at the Sunday School was Irving Kepler, and the last teacher at the school was a member of Elkton Presbyterian Church named Sadie Cavanaugh. She was the teacher when the door to Pierson’s Grove School closed on May 26, 1916. It was the first casualty in the move to consolidate the

public schools of the county. The one-room building was sold to Brown and Bartley on Aug. 24, 1920, for $100. It was converted to a dwelling and moved to Bridge Street in Elkton. When the school closed, Evelyn Pierson Nocke, a former pupil, presented its 45-star American flag and a small handbell to the Historical Society of Cecil County. If you are interested in the history of schools in Cecil County, visit the historical society. The society is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Members may use the research library for free. Non-members must pay a fee of $5.
