NORTH EAST, WALLACE TO TAKE AIM AT GOLF HISTORY IN COLLEGE PARK

BEL AIR - Whether it is on the shoulders of two-time defending state champion Noah Wallace or as a team, North East High School will head into the MPSSAA golf championships in a month looking to earn a spot in the record books. No male golfer has ever won three state

titles and no team from Cecil has ever won a championship. As a team, North East delivered on a goal that started to take shape a few years ago of reaching the state tournament. On a windy Tuesday afternoon at Geneva Farm Golf Course in the District VII Golf Tournament, Head Coach Seth Grimes’

squad posted a team score of 325 – 3 strokes inside the score to qualify for the MPSSAA State Golf Championships late next month in College Park. “It’s a great feeling. To see what they committed to, two, three years ago, that turned into a mantra to go to states,” said Grimes, “To see this pay off for them is

huge.” The day didn’t get off to the kind of start Grimes and his top golfer were looking for as Wallace struggled on his front nine with an uncharacteristic 41. Individual golfers needed to shoot an 82 to qualify by themselves for the state championship and teams needed an average of 82 across the top

four scoring golfers to earn a berth in College Park. Without really knowing where each other stood, Grimes said it seemed like each of them had the determination to play better on the back nine. Wallace flipped a switch somewhere on the homeward nine to card a 33 and finish with a +2. “I’m just glad to see his

(Wallace) maturity and he always seems to be in the hunt,” said Grimes. “They all had the resolve to grind and get the best score for themselves.” For Wallace, the focus turned to helping his team. “After the front nine, I knew I didn’t have a chance to win,

Bel Air, Md – This past Friday, the Bohemia Manor Eagles traveled to face the Patterson Mill Huskies. The Eagles, starting off their season extremely strong at 3-0 including two wins over county rivals Northeast and Rising Sun, looked to take down the strong Huskies. Both teams were 3-0 heading into their match up. The talent from both teams was evident right from the start. To start off the game, Patterson Mill wasted no time on their first drive. Standout Junior running back #40 RJ Wilhelm, kicked off the drive with a 25+ yard run. This was followed by a touchdown run from #1 Nate Tilley, with the extra point being no good. The Eagles bounced back on offense the following drive with 3 early pass completions from Quarter back #5 Chris Harris. The Eagles offense

Rising Sun Senior Mason Testerman was a beast this week in the Battle of 272 game at North East High School.

Karina had a great week. In the past three years we have watched her grow from being the best female golfer in the county to being one of the best golfers in the county amongst the girls and boys teams. She is consistently finishing first overall in matches this year and getting better as she prepares for college.

Mason finished the game with 244 yards rushing, three touchdowns, and three 2 point conversions. Mason is a key piece of the Tigers running game and their defense and he’s proven he can be a playmaker when given the ball and let run.

This week, Karina had a career best of 36 (E) at Ruggles Golf Course leading the Tome Titans to a second place finish out of 4 teams and she was the top overall score for the day.

Eagles suffer first loss against 4-0 Patterson Mill powered their way down the rest of the field from within the huskies 20-yard line. The Eagles ended up scoring on a QB sneak on 4 th and 1 on the 1-yard line. The Eagles had the lead at the end of the first quarter, 7-6. To kick off the second quarter of the game, both teams were at a stale mate for most of the quarter. That

is until Patterson Mill’s #40 Wilhelm rushed for his first touchdown of the game. The Huskies played with a ton of misdirection with their unique T-Wing offense, which included 3 players lined up in a triangular formation behind the QB. The following drive, the Eagles drove all the way down the field with dominate runs

from #3 Xavier Garando. The Huskies forced the Eagles to a field goal, which ended up just right of the goal post. With the score at the half 12-7. Coming out of the half with the ball, the Eagles were held to another 3-andout and were forced to punt. Huskies Wilhelm continued to rush the ball extremely

well with a 21-yard run and another rushing touchdown. The Eagles were able to string together one more strong drive. This included two pass completions from Harris to #2 Nate Fleming and #4 Drew Lenz. Stand out running back for the Eagles Xavier Garando was able to rush for a touchdown at the end of the third quar-

ter.

From then on, the Huskies pulled ahead, scoring three more times with a pick six and two more rushing touchdowns. The Huskies defeated the Eagles 4114. The Eagles will look to bounce back next week as they take on Aberdeen high school.

North East Indians sweep Joppatowne Mariners 3-0 for first win of season By Kevin Phillips

NORTH EAST–North East knows that if it can consistently get their serves in play that it can put their opponents into difficult defensive positions. The Indians did just that in their UCBAC Susquehanna Division volleyball matchup against visiting Joppatowne as North East’s serves were placed in the right position throughout to earn a sweep (26-24, 25-12, 25-16) over the Mariners and earn its first win of the season Thursday evening. “When they started getting those serves across, they got into a groove, and they started getting aces once they got their serves in,” Indian head coach Dan Webber said. In the first game, North East struggled on their serves early, which led to a 24-21 deficit and faced the proposition of falling behind 1-0 in games; but after a timeout, the Indians limited the hitting errors en route to five unanswered points to rally past Joppatowne 26-24 and take a 1-0 lead in the match. North East’s Paige Dugger said the reason why the Indians rallied at the end of the first game was that the team just found a way to get their energy level up, which they

GOING AFTER A CHAMPIONSHIP Lady Crusaders are 10-0 and have their eyes on winning back the

MIL Championship ELKTON - The Tri-State Christian Academy Crusaders have launched into their 2023 Season with a mission to win back the MIL Championship. The Lady Crusaders have dominated the first half of their regular season putting up wins against Perryville, Bohemia Manor, North East, Elkton and MIL Rivals, The Tome School and Providence Christian Academy. The only Cecil County team not on their schedule this year is the Rising Sun Tigers. The Tigers and Crusaders last met in 2021 when the Lady Crusaders shocked everyone with a 3-1 win over the Tigers on the way to winning their first MIL Championship that year. The Lady Crusaders are playing well and seem to be a lock to make it to the Championship game in November.

North East Indians sweep Joppatowne Mariners 3-0 for first win of season continued from B-1

maintained afterwards. “We had great energy there. We hyped each other up and got the next player up with good energy,” Dugger said. “It helped us with the energy for the last two sets. The way we won the first one helped us keep the energy up.” North East’s strong serving showed up in the second game as it hit several unreturnable balls in the frame en route to a 25-12 win the frame to go up 2-0 in the match, and the frame was highlighted by a 16-5 run that broke a 4-4 tie and

put the game out of reach. Dugger took control of the match in the third frame as she had six serves that was not returned, including a stretch of four straight that was part of a larger 13-4 run that turned a 5-5 tie into an 18-9 lead; and the Indians held on from there to earn a 25-16 win in the frame and complete the sweep. “I really don’t know. I give credit to my teammates. Their support really helped me. It helps me alot,” Dugger said of her strong service in the last game. “I was just trying to end it quickly really, and the spot didn’t matter.” North East finished with

16 aces as a team with Ashley Ungarten and Dugger leading the way with 5 and 4 aces respectively, and the Indians had countless other serves that were not returned cleanly, earning them more points. With the win, North East (1-3) earned their first win of the season, and Webber is happy that his team’s hard work produced a positive result. “It’s a big win. These girls are working hard, and they deserve it. They worked hard today and showed a lot of character. They stuck with it. They are a very happy team all of the time, win or lose.”

continued from A-1

but I had heard (through my coach) the rest of the team had started playing well,” said Wallace. “I figured, if I could make some birdies on the back nine, maybe that would help get us into position to qualify as a team.” In addition to Wallace’s 74, Wyatt Cudmore posted a 77, Brandon Kristovich carded an 82 and Brysen Keithley finished off the rounds that comprised the score with a 92. While North Harford led all teams with a 315 and C. Milton Wright posted a 318, North East’s tie for third with Fallston had

Grimes feeling like his players made a statement. “They all played well enough as a team. C. Milton, Fallston, and North Harford have always been the big dogs. It was really cool to see the energy and see we can compete with them,” said Grimes, whose squad is the first from Cecil to make states since Rising Sun in 2013. “It is going to be nice to go to College Park with a team, and not just one golfer from Cecil County, and show that we can play.” While he knows Wallace would have preferred a win in his final District

VII contest, Grimes thinks the grit he showed after a rocky start Tuesday makes a three-peat a possibility. “I feel like he is well primed to make another run at it,” said Grimes. “The fact he was able to shoot 3-under on the back shows he can be in it at any time.” Walt Whitman’s Webb Heintzelman and a handful of others, including Wallace, have won two titles before. With a win on October 23-25 at the University of Maryland Golf Course, Wallace would be the first male to pull off the hat trick. C. Milton Wright’s Jack Geyer’s medalist low round of 67 helped his team notch

their trip to College Park in the 1A/2A division and a second-place finish overall at Districts. In addition to all the members of the North East team who qualified for States, two other Cecil golfers will make the trip. Rising Sun’s Lucas Kilgore (80) and Bohemia Manor’s Braden Paris (80) both made the cut. Other golfers to qualify as individuals for States were Harford Tech’s Kacy Day and Jackson Parks and Bel Air’s Ben Bowen. The low scorers for Cecil County remaining teams were Perryville’s Andrew Kidd (91) and Zack Flynn (123).

North East Bounces Back With 5-0 Win Over Joppatowne By Joe Wagman NORTH EAST - After two back-to-back disappointing losses to Harford Tech and North Harford, the Indians were looking to get back in the win column. North East (2-2) bounced back in a controlling win against Joppatowne (0-2) as they won 5-0. North East had not been pleased with their performance in the previous week and knew they needed to improve. This week they

came out looking better just about all around, having five different players to score a goal and not letting up a single goal to Joppatowne. Throughout the first 10 minutes both teams had been given chances on each other’s side of the field. The scoring began for North East in the 12th minute, when junior Riley Zimmerman scored the first goal of the day, coming off an assist by junior Keegan Allen to give North East a 1-0 lead.

North East scored their second goal in the 29th minute after a Joppatowne foul led to a penalty kick for senior Evan England, pushing the score to 2-0 before the half. The scoring wasn’t done yet for North East nor were they going to let up anytime soon on defense. Throughout the second half the Indians continued to perform great defensively and controlled the ball the majority of the time. Coming right out of the

half a costly mistake by Joppatowne in the 41st minute added to North East’s lead, making it 3-0 as a defender scored an own goal. The ball had last been touched by freshman Liam Ivarsson. Later on, another Joppatowne foul in the 49th minute gave another penalty kick opportunity to the Indians, this time to Keegan Allen, who connected on his shot making the score 4-0 North East. The scoring was finally capped off in the 69th min-

ute as senior captain Grant Morris scored his first goal of the season coming off an assist by junior Alexander York to increase the score 5-0 North East. North East head coach David Hamilton was very much pleased postgame saying, “we started flat, really built into it well. We’ve worked a lot on 2 to 3 touch and we’ve done it well tonight, plenty of shots, defensively was fantastic so a good overall team performance.”

Grant Morris while acknowledging his team’s successes on the day also recognizes that there is still much improvement to be made. “Coming off a pretty awful game last week I think we stepped it up by a lot but we still didn’t play our best,” Morris said. “We came out ready this time and we played well, connected a lot of passes, got a lot of through balls and overall it showed because we ended up winning 5-0.”

Annual breakfast celebrates donors, scholarship recipients

RISING SUN, Md.: The Cecil College Foundation hosted its annual Scholarship Breakfast at the Rising Sun Banquet Hall this past week to introduce its generous contributors to those students benefiting from scholarships this academic year. “You are making a difference in the lives of these young people,” said Dr. Mary Way Bolt, president of Cecil College. “Look around this room at the students and those students who are sitting with you. I encourage you to talk to them and hear their stories. You have made it possible for them to have a brighter future.” More than 260 donors and students attended the Cecil College Foundation’s annual Scholarship Breakfast. This year, the Foundation assisted 308 students totaling $421,230. One of those 308 students benefiting was James Brindley, a Physical Therapist Assistant major and recipient of the Sean M. McCormick Memorial Scholarship. Attending Cecil College starts a new life for Brindley as a non-traditional student. Married with two children, the Sean M. McCormick Memorial Scholarship opened doors he felt would never have opened for him. “As a second career student later in life, with a wife and two young children, school has come with many additional challenges from finances to time management. This scholarship helped to alleviate some of the financial burden that school can carry. I want to personally thank those who have contributed to the

scholarship fund, as well as those have awarded me the scholarship. It has truly contributed to my education, and I look forward to being able to care for others and give back to my patients in the future,” said Brindley. Community colleges have recently been in the national spotlight as the viable solution to the ever-mounting issue of student debt. Since 2003, the cost of an education at a four-year public university has increased 175 percent from an average of $6,505 to more than $11,541. According to Forbes, the average student coming out of college finds themselves with $28,950 in debt. “The Cecil College PTA program serves the needs of the county and surrounding region by educating the next generation of rehabilitation professionals who improve the quality of life for residents. We appreciate the support of all the donors and the Foundation, who make it possible,” said Assistant Professor Deanna Smith, director of the PTA Program. The Cecil College PTA Program has achieved a 100 percent first-time pass rate for six of the past eight years on the national licensing exam. Also experiencing a 100 percent certification pass rate were the nursing and medical assistant programs. Many of these students benefited from the generous donations made to the scholarship fund. “I thank you personally for your support and on behalf of all those students you support. Your generosity is impactful and will make

a difference for generations to come,” said Dr. Bolt, who was joined by Cecil College Board of Trustees members Sarah Colenda, Mark Mortenson, and Kathleen Kunda in honoring donors and students. For Tromarri Neal of Elkton, attending Cecil College was a game changer as it allowed her to learn more about herself while proving she has the drive and ability to be successful on the collegiate level. It allowed her to assimilate from a high school mindset to college life. Also, as the recipient of the Collegium de Vinum Gala Scholarship, Neal will be the first person in her family to earn a college degree. She is on track to graduate in May with a degree in sports management. “Growing up in a single-parent home was hard as I watched my mom struggle to raise my siblings and me so that we could reach our full potential. Earning a college degree is not just for me but for her, to show all her hard work has led to this moment,” said Neal. The Cecil College Foundation Board of Directors is comprised of 25 community leaders who work to develop financial and other resources to support Cecil College students. Francis Mita, Chairman of the Foundation Board, presented the Mary Maloney Distinguished Service Award at the Breakfast to Jacqueline and Hiram C. Brown, Jr, who were recognized for the outstanding public service work. For more than a decade, the Browns have been raising

funds to support The Hiram C. Brown, Sr. Memorial Scholarship, which supports students who wish to pursue their talents in the Arts or who have a passion for social service. “The scholarship breakfast is one of my favorite Foundation events because

it brings together our donors and student recipients. This is a great opportunity to celebrate our Cecil College students and many of the donors who support them,” said Karen Uricoli, executive director of the Cecil College Foundation. The breakfast conclud-

ed with the presentation of the Health Education Lift Program (HELP) Fund Awards to incoming nursing students. These awards included blood pressure cuffs and other instruments the students need in their lessons.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Join North East High School on Sept 22 for a special night.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (2022), suicide is the third leading cause of death for people ages 10-19. North East High School’s football program experienced this first hand on July 28, 2019, when one of their players, Thomas Ocasio III, died by suicide at the age of 16. The NEHS football team has since collaborated with the LIVEFORTHOMAS Foundation* to not only keep Thomas’s memory alive but to show their players they are not alone in whatever they are struggling with, to provide support to their players, and to connect their players with appropriate resources. On September 22, 2023, the NEHS football team will be hosting Suicide Awareness Night during their game against Rising Sun. Be sure to come out to show your support. *The LIVEFORTHOMAS Foundation was founded in 2020 by Thomas’s mom, Amy, and his sister, Michaela. Their mission is to break the stigma, change the face of suicide (it can happen to anyone), and change the narrative men are “weak” if they show emotion/ask for help. On September 30th, the LIVEFORTHOMAS Foundation will be holding a fundraiser, Gatsby Gala, in memory of what would have been Thomas’s 21st birthday. The proceeds from the event will benefit the LIVEFORTHOMAS Foundation to continue with their mission through providing mental health awareness talks, facilitating Youth Mental Health First Aid training, collaborating with CCPS to implement mental health assemblies/programs into the schools, and more. To find out more about the LIVEFORTHOMAS Foundation visit www.liveforthomas.org, Facebook: LiveForThomas, Instagram: live4thomas, or Email: liveforthomas@gmail.com.

Historical Society of Cecil County:

Soda Bottling in Cecil County By: Paula H. Newton How do you keep the bubbles in without the bottle exploding from the buildup of gas? Bottling carbonated beverages presented a unique problem. William Painter, a Baltimore, Maryland machine shop operator patented the “Crown Cork Bottle Seal” in 1892. This invention successfully kept the bubbles in the bottle. Initially glass bottles were hand-blown, but in 1899 the first patent for a glass-blowing machine that enabled the automatic production of glass bottles was issued. This invention was first operated by Michael Owens, an employee of the Libby Glass Company. Production of glass bottles was soon a thriving business. Soft drinks go back as far as 1676 when fruit-flavored drinks like lemonade were developed.

Vendors in Paris carried this concoction in tanks on their backs and dispensed the mixture of lemon juice, water and honey to Parisians. Carbonated water didn’t come along until 1767, when an Englishman, Joseph Priestley, first discovered a method of infusing water with carbon dioxide. Carbonated water is the major component of most soft drinks. It was not long before flavoring was combined with carbonated water with the earliest reference being to ginger beer in 1809. Johann Jacob Schweppe developed carbonated mineral water and founded the Schweppes Company in 1783. Pharmacists selling mineral waters began to add herbs and chemicals such as Birch bark, dandelion, sarsaparilla and fruit extracts to add flavoring. Soft drinks became so appealing that they soon progressed be-

yond the medical world and were a widely consumed beverage. Soda fountains were first manufactured in the 1830s and initially they were the popular destination for Americans. Coca-Cola began in 1886 when an Atlanta pharmacist, Dr. John S. Pemberton created a distinctive tasting soft drink to be sold at soda fountains. Bottled drinks were less popular due to problems in the U.S. glass industry. Joseph Biedenharn was so impressed by the growing demand for Coke that in 1894 he installed bottling machinery in the rear of his Mississippi soda fountain becoming the first to bottle Coke. Soon after large scale bottling increased dramatically and most towns had a bottling company. Elkton had several including Perkins & Perkins, Mo Ro Company, Cecil

Spring Bottling Company, C. McAteer, S & C, and H. Carroll. Alexander’s, Geo. H. Queck and A.E. Hague operated out of Chesapeake City, Star Bottling Co. was located in Cowentown and C. Mohrlein in Port Deposit. Mo Ro, formulated by D. S. Terrell, was produced and distributed from about 1915-20. Terrell was the owner/manager of Well’s Drug Store on Main St. (located where the Ritz Hotel building is currently). They offered a full line of “pure, delicious bottled sodas” including flavors such as Ginger Ale, Sarsaparilla, Root Beer, Orange, Lemon and Grape Smash. The drink was manufactured in the basement but when the drug store moved to North St. production was discontinued. Perkins & Perkins operated from 1913-1923 in a two-story wooden building on the corner of Singerly Ave. and the old ball field. It began when Joseph H. Perkins left Charles E. Hires Company in Philadelphia where he was chief chemist to start a business with his father J. Will Perkins whose harness shop was virtually wiped out by the introduction of the automobile. Pure fruit juice or flavoring was bottled in small bottles and quarts and were used in soda fountains. It had a countrywide distribution, however when artificial flavorings were introduced the natural product was no longer competitive and the company closed. Glass bottling companies are yet another business that thrived until technology made them obsolete and owners had to reinvent themselves and their businesses. Technology continues to close one door, but open another. Is the definition of progress?
