SPOILER ALERT:

CECIL COUNTY’S

PERRYVILLE UPSETS ELKTON 28-21

By Scott Serio

ELKTON - Perryville came into Elkton on a foggy Fall Friday night hoping to play the role of homecoming spoiler. The Panthers used more than 200 rushing yards by Ethen Gunter to

carry them to a 28-21 upset. On a night that could have gone the way of their Susky Bowl loss to Havre de Grace the week before, Perryville didn’t let some huge first half penalties derail them. “When problems occur or penalties get called

that aren’t in our favor. We refocus and look at it as an opportunity to make a play,” said Perryville Head Coach Sean Sandora. “Our kids were able to block out the terrible penalty calls and not let those impact our ability to finish the game.”

The Panthers opened the scoring for the evening when Kyle Richards broke open a shallow toss to the flats for a 64-yard touchdown score. Elkton evened the score when D.J. Piner split the Perryville defense and turned a slant route into

a touchdown. In a matter of minutes, the Panthers had 117 yards and two touchdowns called back on penalties, but continued to pound the ball right into the middle of the Golden Elks defense to keep the momentum. Perryville head-

ed into the halftime break with a 14-7 lead. Elkton came out of the break and used a huge Solomon Pope run to get into the red zone and another Pope carry to tie the score at 14continued on A-4

14. The cross-county rivals traded scores on a Jordan Jones rushing touchdown and another Pope goal line effort to keep the contest knotted at 21-21 until the Panthers game-winning drive. For much of the night,

the Panthers relied on Gunter behind center in the Wildcat. For much of the night, the Golden Elks defense had no answer for Gunter or freshman running back Jordan Jones as they found openings in the interior of the Elkton defense for big gains. Gunter carried the ball 30 times for 207 yards

and two touchdowns. Jones added 39 yards on five carries with a score. “Considering the fumbles I have had the last few weeks, it feels good to know that the coach trusts me. Even though I keep dropping the ball, he keeps giving it to me,” said Gunter, who scored the pivotal

touchdown on a 22-yard rumble with 7:13 left in the game. “This week. I didn’t drop the ball. He trusted me. I delivered, the line did their thing, and we got a win.” Gunter added, “In the locker room (at halftime) the coaches and I emphasized that they (Elkton) are a second half team, so we had to

come out in the second half and stay on it. We could not let up and get complacent.” The win levels Perryville’s record at 3-3 as they stay on the road for the next two matchups, starting at Fallston next week. Elkton drops to 2-4 and heads to Bel Air next week.

BOHEMIA MANOR VOLLEYBALL DEFEATS RISING SUN 3-1

By Kevin Phillips

CHESAPEAKE CITY–Facing game point and a chance to tie the match at 1-1, Bohemia Manor witnessed a six-point lead evaporate in game two against visiting Rising Sun in UBCAC volleyball action Thursday evening. Eagle head coach Chris

Spencer called timeout to relax his team down and remind them that they got the six point lead for a reason. Bo Manor responded with the final two points in the frame to level the match, and the Eagles used that confidence from winning the frame to win the final two games and defeat the Tigers in four games (20-25,

26-24, 25-20, 25-20). “I have no idea,” Spencer joked. “I think it was just settling down. I think we got pretty excited there. I think we have been right there all year. I think once we got in that spot at the end, I think we settled down and remembered who we were.” The first game was a tight battle throughout with

neither team scoring more than four points in a row; but Rising Sun used one of those 4-0 mini runs to turn a 20-18 lead into a 24-18 advantage, which eventually led to a 25-20 victory and a 1-0 lead in the match. The second set was just as competitive as the first as the largest lead was just three points in the first half

of the frame. The Tigers held a 14-13 lead at point, but Bo Manor gained control with an 11-4 run to take a 24-18 lead, setting up game point and a chance to equalize the match. That’s when Rising Sun rallied with six unanswered points to tie the frame at 2424, which prompted Spen-

cer’s timeout. Even after their lead evaporated, the Eagles kept their spirits up and supported each other, and as a result, they scored the final two points of the frame to earn the win 26-24, leveling the match at 1-1. “Really, it was counting continued on B-2

on each other and believing that we could pull through,” Bo Manor’s Ella Dunn said. “We continued to shout for each other and tell each other to shake it off because it would make the next point better.” “I think it was really important for the team to keep talking to one another and encouraging each other,” Hannah Beck added.

The Eagles used a 13-6 run to break 5-5 tie in the third game and never looked back to win the frame 25-20 and take a 2-1 lead in the match. Rising Sun looked to even the match in the fourth game, jumping out to a 13-6 lead, but Bo Manor responded with 18 of the game’s last 25 points to surge past the Tigers to earn a 25-20 win in the fourth game and secure the victory.

Spencer said those crucial points at the end of the second proved to be the biggest points of the match because it gave the Eagles confidence that they could hang with any team. “I think it showed them that they could do it, and we could definitely hang with them,” Spencer said. “It was a great match. Rising Sun is a great team, and we were able to keep up with them and beat them.”

North East Defends Home Turf

By Joe Wagman

NORTH EAST - The North East Indians and the Edgewood Rams met on Wednesday afternoon both looking for a rebound on their season as they both have struggled to start. Both teams entered off losses as North East looked to end a 3 game losing streak and Edgewood was coming off a loss to Perryville. The Indians won the game 3-2, improving to (3-5) as Edgewood falls to (2-5-1).

The scoring began right away for North East as senior Grant Morris quickly scored within the 1st minute coming off an assist from junior Scott Holmes. North East took a very early 1-0 lead over Edgewood. As both teams traveled up and down the field throughout the first half, Edgewood would respond with a goal in the 24th minute, tying the game at 1-1. Both sides played physical and aggressive throughout the entirety of

the game. As both teams seemed to have gotten opportunities they had seemed to be negated by fouls, offsides call, and a missed penalty kick. North East would go on to capitalize on an Edgewood foul in the 36th minute as senior Evan England would connect and score on a free kick, putting the Indians back in front 2-1. To start the first half North East would once again connect on an early goal. A North East shot on goal had

been deflected by the Edgewood goalkeeper, however it would be freshman Liam Ivarsson to shoot on the deflection and score in the 2nd minute of the second half. The goal would increase the Indian’s lead to 3-1. Edgewood later on in the game would score their 2nd goal on the day in the 31st minute of the second half, cutting their deficit to 3-2. North East’s defense stayed strong for the remaining minutes, allowing them to come away with the

win.

Energy is what North East said contributed most to their win. Senior Grant Morris commented, “We came out fast and got that quick goal which was huge to keeping our team moving throughout the game. We had moments today unlike the last few games, we had more energy coming into today, more adrenaline, we played more as a team and less selfish.” With a change in attitude, North East head

coach David Hamilton said, “The energy was better, the momentum was better, and the overall action was better.” Hamilton recognizes however that moving against their three next opponents, Havre de Grace, Patterson Mill, and Perryville, there is still much improvement to be made. “Its the fundamentals. We need better first touch, better movement, better attacking the ball, but that will come”

Cecil College hosts Go to High School, Go to College

NORTH EAST, Md.: Cecil College hosted more than 100 male students from the Cecil County Public School District and beyond for a “Go to High School, Go to College” event on the North East Campus, sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. - Iota Alpha Lambda Chapter. This event is a national initiative by Alpha Phi Alpha which concentrates on the importance of completing secondary and collegiate education as a road to advancement for underrepresented men. Throughout the day, students were informed of the many academic, skilled trades and certificate programs Cecil College has to offer, financial aid and

scholarships, and strategies that facilitate success. U.S. Department of Education statistics corroborate the value of this extra impetus in making the difference in the success of young minority males, given that school completion is the single best predictor of future economic success. Cecil College Dean of Continuing Education and Workforce Development Miles Dean informed those in attendance that Cecil College has a multitude of skilled trades programs that lead to a path of success. Associate Professor of Computer Science Dr. James Morgan talked to the students about the value of the degree programs at Ce-

cil College and reflected on how he was the first person from his family to earn a college degree. The CCPS students were introduced to a panel of four Cecil College students – Aidan Hayes, Mark Lee, Keshawn Gardner, and Daniel Onasanya – to discuss the life as a college student. Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Iota Alpha Lambda Chapter President Trevor Chin informed those in attendance of the Alpha Phi Alpha scholarships available for “high school students to pursue their dreams.” The keynote speaker was the Hon. Judge William Davis, Associate Judge for the Circuit Court for Cecil

County, who spoke about the importance of having a Plan A, Plan B, and a Plan C. “I am very fortunate for where I am today. I didn’t start out to become a judge. I wanted to be a lawyer who represented professional athletes. It is so important to have backup plans and to take advantage of the opportunities that befall you,” said Hon. Judge Davis. The "Go-to-HighSchool, Go-to-College" program was established in 1922 by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Alpha men provide youth participants with excellent role models to emulate.

1894 Elkton Football Team – The Greatest Ever? By Beth Boulden Moore Today in Cecil County, each public high school has a football team. In 1894, there were no public school football teams. Elkton High School didn’t even exist yet. Cecil County High School didn’t open until 1896. Despite this, a group of young men wanted to play football. These men, all between the ages of 18 and 30, formed a town football team. This town team’s opponents included Upland and Eddystone of Chester, PA, the YMCA and Warren of Wilmington, DE, Delaware College (now the University of Delaware) of Newark, DE,

Baltimore City College, and the Baltimore Athletic Club. Home games were played at the Elkton Fair Grounds (present day Elkton Heights) with a twenty-five cents admission price. Games consisted of two twenty-five minute halves. On October 13, 1894, the Cecil Democrat newspaper published an article about this team. The team included three Ward brothers – Richard, Lou, and George. Jack, Henry, and Albert Constable and Doc, Harry, and John Wilson also played on the team. The Ward brothers and center Charlie Carter had a combined weight of neatly 900

pounds. Henry and Jack Constable were among the stars of the team. The article reported, “Ends were Fred Garrett, who was described as sure and fast, and Henry Constable, known for setting a fast pace. Tackle Dick Shaffer was described as ‘old reliable’ and tackle Everett Wilson was ‘always gets into the play’. Guards were Lou and Richard Ward. The brothers were known for being ‘powerful and active on their feet’. Halfbacks Slater McKenny and John Wilson were ‘sturdy and fast, with considerable weight and lots

of grit.’ Rounding out the backfield were fullback Jimmie Evans and quarterback Jack Constable. Constable and Wilson were considered masters of the game who had confidence in the team and composed a team by themselves.” The Cecil Democrat covered only some of the team’s games. The team lost at least three times, but they were certainly respected. The team became known as the greatest football team in Elkton’s history. That same 1894 Cecil Democrat article quotes an unidentified Delaware newspaper, saying, “The Delaware College (now the University of Delaware) faculty, at its last meeting, resolved that the college football team be permitted to play match games with no clubs that that did not represent strictly educational institutions. The intention of this rule is, of course, to

keep the game upon a higher level and to maintain as well the dignity of the college.” The article concluded by saying “Elkton does not abound in excellent base ball material, but it can hold its own in foot ball.” Perhaps the college did not appreciate being beat-

en or competing against a non-college team! The Historical Society of Cecil County is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 am to 4 pm. The research library is also open on the first Saturday of each month from 10 am to 2 pm.
