FALLSTON - For the second straight Friday night, Perryville went on the road to play the role of homecoming spoiler. Facing a previously 4-2 Fallston Cougar team, riding back-to-back double-digit series wins, the

Panthers were dominant from the outset in their 34-9 win. The possibility of an upset was in the air from the start, when the Cougars opening drive went nowhere. With their senior running back Ethen Gunter a little banged up, Perryville

turned to freshman Jordan Jones to provide the spark for the running game. “Jordon was stepping up in situations for us and he got the opportunity and took advantage of it,” said Perryville Head Coach Sean Sandora, before plugging the play of his defense. “Our

D-line, I am very proud of them. In previous weeks we have struggled with mobile quarterbacks, and we were able to keep him contained and in the pocket and put some pressure on him.” All the offensive position players had a hand in the victory, but it was the

defense that kept Fallston on the run most of the night. Led by Tyshaun Johnson’s 12.5 tackles, nine of them solo, the Panthers forced two fumbles, two sacks, five tackles for a loss and a pair of interceptions that included a Pick-6 by Gunter. Perryville stymied an offense that had put up at least 20 points in every game this season and kept them out of the end zone until the fourth quarter. Except for a field goal after the trickery of

onside kick to start the second half, followed by successful fake punt, Fallston was stuck in neutral until the game was out of reach. On the offensive side of the ball, Jones had two rushing touchdowns on 12 carries for 84 yards. After the breakout performance by the freshman, Jones wanted to give credit to Gunter and his mentorship. “It feels good. He (Gunter) continued on A-4

Gary scored five goals for the week and had four assists.

That’s exactly what she did this week against Perryville as she helped the Tigers defeat Perryville 4-2. Katelyn is a threat other teams must plan for.

really teaches me a lot that I do. I really just want to give him the credit, because he just teaches me basically everything,” said Jones, before thanking his offensive line as well. “My line, they were opening up everything. I love them boys.” The air attack was also on point for the Panthers, with Ty Patchell connecting on 10 of 12 passes for 110 yards, and a touchdown strike Kyle Richards. After a 34-yard jump ball catch by Richards got Perryville into the red zone, the senior wideout skied over a Cougar defender to haul in his first touchdown of the night.

Richards also broke a handful of tackles taking the kick return after Fallston’s field goal back for a touchdown. “Kyle Richards is coming into his own. He is a phenomenal football player and a great young man,” said Sandora. “He is just starting to believe in himself and is doing great job for us.” The win moved Perryville to 4-3 on the season with another travel game against Bohemia Manor this week. The Panthers are 3-0 on the road and will face the 5-2 Eagles, who are coming off a 28-18 win on homecoming night against Havre de Grace.

PERRYVILLE FIELD HOCKEY CELEBRATES SENIOR NIGHT

By Kevin Phillips

PERRYVILLE–Playing in a tightly-played, defensive battle, Perryville had few high-quality scoring chances against visiting Harford Tech in the teams’ UCBAC field hockey contest Wednesday evening. The Panthers made the most of their limited chances with a pair of first half goals before holding off a late surge from the Cobras to earn a 2-1 victory on Senior Night. “In practice, we’ve been working on making dynamic shots and setting each other up to move the ball and have better angled shots, so when we do get a shot, we’re capitalizing on,” Perryville head coach Janet Candy said . “We have a saying, ‘it’ll be there,’ which is basically the more we practice it, the more it will be there.” The Panthers capitalized on their first scoring chance of the game midway through the first quarter when the ball was passed in front of the cage in the

middle of heavy traffic, and Rileigh Manthei gathered the shot and shot it into the cage to give Perryville a 1-0 lead. Manthei, a senior, had been waiting for this game ever since she started with the Panthers and pictured that she would find a way to get on the board on Senior Night. “It feels great. It’s kind of like a dream. I imagined this night for four years and getting a goal was a part of that dream,” Manthei said. After Manthei’s goal, neither team could really establish any type of rhythm with possession for the remainder of the first half as both defenses pressured the ball handler well throughout, limiting scoring chances. That changed late in the second quarter when Perryville pushed the ball down deep inside Harford Tech’s cage, and that push eventually led to a penalty getting called, setting up a penalty stroke. Jenna Clark was called on to take the shot, and she rocketed the shot to

NEXT UP: PERRYVILLE FIELD HOCKEY AT ELKTON HIGH SCHOOL OCTOBER 16 - 6:00PM

her right and into the net to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead with 1:44 left in the second quarter. Clark said that the way Perryville takes penalty strokes in practice helped her against the Cobras. “When we started out, she (Candy) has us take shots farther in practice, so I’m like, ‘I have to put some power into this. I got this.’ We practice this every day, and I’m really proud of my-

self,” Clark said. Perryville’s defense did a good job preventing Harford Tech from getting quality scoring chances until the last minute of the third quarter when Emma Wrzosek deposited a shot into the cage to make it 2-1. The Panthers survived two strong scoring chances in the final minute to hold on to the win.

WALLACE WINS THIRD STRAIGHT COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP

photos by Scott Serio

MIDDLETOWN, DE - The match was all but over, with just two groups remaining on the course at the annual Cecil County Golf Championships at Back Creek Golf Course, and North East’s Noah Wallace had already moved on to the next big golf thing. Wallace had just fired off a 3-under 68 to win his third straight title in the

event and his mind was on his short game and a chance to make history by becoming the first male golfer to win three state titles in a row. “After I finished, I was out there sharpening up my game around the greens,” said Wallace. “Short game is definitely a factor for my success and a key to get-

ting another state championship.” Wednesday’s tournament in Middletown, Delaware was a site for a couple more repeat champions, with Rising Sun’s team wrangling their fourth straight county title by two strokes with a team total of 528. Perryville made a match of it when their last golfer out on the

course, Zach Vanbergen, came in with an 84 to lower his team’s total to 530. Lucas Kilgore finished tied for third with an 81 to lead Rising Sun in scoring. Andrew Kidd also posted an 84 as his team’s top score. The final repeat on the day was Tome School senior Karina Serio. In the final match of her high school ca-

reer, Serio needed a par-par finish to break 80 for the first time in competition. With a two-putt from 60-feet on the last, she carded a 79 to earn her third straight county championship as well as low girl golfer and solo in second place overall. “This tournament was very sentimental, not just because it was my last time

playing in a high school tournament, but also because I realized it was the end of being a part of my team,” said Serio, a four-year starter for Tome. “I’m incredibly proud of not only how far my team has come this year, but the past four years.” continued on C-2

Cecil County Golf Championship continued from C1

As a student at a private school, Serio won’t be able to join her fellow Cecil County golfers in the MPSSAA 1A/2A Golf Championship on October 23-25 in College Park. She wasn’t the only one aware this was their last high school match with golfers they started playing against at the height of the pandemic. “Me and the other seniors all talked before the match how this was our last event in the county and what it meant to us,” said Wallace. “It was awesome to end my last Cecil County tournament on a high note. It’s been cool to see players grow through the game

across the county and on my team.” Kilgore and Bohemia Manor’s Braden Paris will join the entire North East team in College Park. Wallace will be joined at the University of Maryland Golf Course by teammates Wyatt Cudmore, Brandon Kristovich, Brysen Keithley and Addison Groce. Wallace gave a shout out to the hard work he has seen this year. “It has been a great experience. Everyone around me is playing for the same reason, to get better. Especially a player like Brandon Kristovich,” sauid Wallace. “He joined as a sophomore and now as a senior is going to compete in a state championship.”

NORTH EAST SR NIGHT vs PERRYVILLE

photos by Nathan Kline

By Kevin Phillips

NORTH EAST–Perryville possessed the ball for most of its UCBAC boys’ soccer contest against host North East but knew going in that the best way to score was to attack quickly after regaining possession. The Panthers did just that as they scored two goals right after they won possession and a third on a set piece with Dylan Sayer scoring all three goals to defeat the Indians 3-0 Thursday night.

“I wouldn’t say we had few opportunities as we had the ball in their defensive third for most of the match. (North East) plays such a direct style trying to get balls in behind the back line where they are basically giving us the ball,” Perryville head coach Chris Tome said. “Then, we either turn that into a counterattack because they are pushed too high up the field, or we try to possess the ball and get it into the corner,” Tome added. “We decided to attack the flanks and get guys

into the corners, and that’s where our goal scoring opportunities came from.” Perryville controlled possession for much of the first half but did not find the back of the net until the final three minutes of the first half. Sayer received a pass after the Panthers regained possession in the final third and rocketed a shot that deflected into the net to make it 1-0, and Sayer said when he received the ball, he had a strong idea what he wanted to do.

“One of my teammates passed me the ball, and I knew exactly what I wanted to do with a man on my back,” Sayer said. “I knew where the goal was, so I turned, shot the ball in and hoped it would go in, and it did.” The Panthers carried that momentum into the second half, and Sayer made it 2-0 when he scored off a corner kick set piece just two minutes into the second half. Perryville continued to control possession for the

remainder of the game, and whenever North East was on the attack, the Panthers quickly pressued the ball and regained possession to limit the Indians from getting scoring chances. That aggressive pressure from Perryville after losing possession is something that Tome emphasizes throughout the season. “We train at such a high rate, and it’s always my first priority is when we lose the ball, we win it right back,” Tome said. “If we could put their head down and pres-

sure right away, it doesn’t allow them to see the target players. Our philosophy is as soon as we lose the ball, we win it back.” Sayer put the game out of reach in the game’s waning minutes when his long range shot went by a charging goalkeeper in the 86th minute to make it 3-0.

October! Dressage

Dressage is the first of three phases in eventing. From the French word meaning “training,” dressage was originally created to show the horse’s submission and ability to perform intricate movements required for cavalry exercises. Today’s dressage still demonstrates the graceful partnership of horse and rider through a sequence of movements, but now they are ridden in an enclosed arena and scored by judges. The goal remains very similar, that horse should demonstrate balance, rhythm, suppleness, and most importantly obedience.

Cross Country The cross-country phase typically takes place on the second day of competition, but always after the dressage phase of the competition. Cross-country is the cornerstone of eventing and challenges the horse and rider’s bravery, fitness, and determination over varied terrain and solid obstacles. Carrying forward their penalty points from the dressage phase as their score, riders want to finish with the fewest penalties possible by jumping every fence on the first try, and finishing the course within the allotted time limit, which is known as optimum time.

Show Jumping The third phase, show jumping, tests horses and riders precision over a series of delicate fences made from colorful rails that are easily knocked down. This final phase tests the stamina and recovery of the horse after the challenging cross-country phase. Consisting of 12 to 15 jumps in an enclosed arena, show jumping requires exact riding as the slightest bump could cause a rail to fall, resulting in four penalty points. Competitors accumulate penalty points throughout the three phases, and the pair with the lowest score takes home top honors.

ELKTON ALLIANCE

Elktonians know that there is much to like about Elkton and its people. One might ask, has it always been so? One incident almost 150 years ago would seem to prove it true. One late summer day in Little Elk, a community beyond the western edge of Elkton proper, the children of a Mrs. Woodrow came in to tell her that a man in “soldier's clothes” was lying in a cart by the house. This good lady determined that he was ill, brought him into her house to tend him, and sent for a doctor. Meanwhile, officials at the Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Wilmington Railroad were frantically searching the countryside for a lost passenger, reported to have stepped off the train as it slowed to make the grade of Iron Hill. Somehow, James Clayton Shofner had made it from Iron Hill to Little Elk while in a state of delirium. He later said that when he stepped off the train he thought he was stepping out of his home, which turned out to be a farm in Mulberry, Lincoln County Tennessee. The “soldier's clothes” were the uniform of a West Point cadet, and Shofner was returning to the Academy to begin his third year. The railroad officials, being immensely relieved that their errant passenger had been found, arranged for Dr. R. C. Tuft of Elkton to care for him, and notification was sent to the school regarding the circumstances of Shofner's absence. The Post Commander, Thomas H. Ruger, placed the young man under Dr. Tuft's care until he could continue his journey. Dr. Tuft determined that Shofner was suffering from an attack of malaria, common in the United States at that time. Eventually, Shofner was moved to the house of Alexander Evans, an attorney and son of Dr. Amos EvJames Clayton Shofner. Photo courtesy of ans, who served as surgeon aboard the U. the 1927 Annual Report of the Association of Graduates of the U. S. Military Academy. S. S. Constitution during the War of 1812. Here he would complete his recovery before returning to West Point. So what, you may ask, happened to this inadvertent visitor to Elkton? The Tennessee farm boy graduated from West Point on June 14, 1877 as a 2nd Lieutenant and was assigned to the 21st Infantry. He was posted to Fort Vancouver, Washington Territory, then commanded by General O. O. Howard, where he participated in the Indian Wars of 1877-1879 in the Pacific Northwest. Shofner married in October of 1879, followed by the birth of his daughter in August of 1880. Shortly after this, he asked for and received a leave of absence. Perhaps now that he was a father, it was decided that he should not continue in a dangerous career. At any rate, he officially resigned on June 1, 1881, and the family moved to Portland, Oregon, where Shofner became a deputy county clerk. There are indications that he may have operated a business during this time as well. In 1887, Governor Sylvester Pennoyer (“His Eccentricity”, as he was dubbed by a local reporter at the time) appointed Shofner a brigadier general in the Oregon State Militia. Eventually, the militia became the Oregon National Guard, and Shofner rose to its command for a very brief time. During this time he was again operating a business while fulfilling his ONG duties, but he seems to have given that up to spend five years with the U. S. Engineers Department in Portland. In 1899, he opened a retail grocery business which operated from his home. By 1910, he was ready for something new, and he and his wife Annie moved to Sonoma, California where they owned and operated a fruit ranch. By this time, his four children were grown and stayed in Oregon. Annie died in July 1923. Records for James's second marriage in September, 1923 exist but no acknowledgment of the second Mrs. Shofner is made in any obituary or biographical information available. In any case, the marriage did not last long, as James Shofner died in November of 1926 after a long illness. And what of Mrs. Woodrow, the kindly woman who took in a sick stranger? No further information could be found of this lady. One hopes that the onetime West Point cadet she helped spared a thought for her occasionally.

Superintendent’s Update OCTOBER 13, 2023

Dear Families, As we begin the month of October, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the past couple of weeks and share some exciting updates from our school district. First and foremost, I am pleased to report that the start of the school year has been a tremendous success. The open houses were a great opportunity for families to connect with teachers and staff, and I've heard positive feedback from many of you about these events. Your engagement and support make a significant difference in our students' education, and we truly appreciate it. I'd also like to highlight the success of our "Girls in STEM" initiative for middle school students. This program aims to inspire and empower young women to pursue their interests in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The feedback from students and parents has been incredibly positive, and we are excited to see our young scholars excel in STEM-related fields. Furthermore, our recent college and career fair was a resounding success. It provided valuable opportunities for our high school students to explore their post-secondary options and connect with representatives from colleges, universities, and various career paths. We are committed to helping our students achieve their academic and career goals, and events like these are an integral part of that commitment.
