The brainchild of Anita Motion, the Real Rider Cup is a charity show jumping event that invites racing industry personalities to team up with an off-track Thoroughbred and compete over a course of jumps, while raising funds to benefit Thoroughbred aftercare. Each rider — employees of breeding farms and racing stables, trainers, jockeys, owners, members of racing media, and more — pledges to raise a minimum of $1,000, which directly supports Real Rider Cup beneficiaries: Fair Hill Thoroughbred Show, New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program, and the Retired Racehorse Project. Since its inception in 2017, the Real Rider Cup has raised over half a million dollars for these organizations.

PERRYVILLE–With the clock quickly winding down in the second half of its UCBAC girls’ soccer battle with visiting Harford Tech, Perryville faced a clogged midfield with little room to

“Tori scored all 4 of Rising Suns’ goals against Havre de Grace on 9/13. The score was 4-3 Rising Sun. Tori showed how determined she can be when her team needs her to step up. After Havre de Grace tied the game, she took the team on her back and scored the 4th and final goal of the game. Tori is such a hard working player who is always trying to be better for herself and her team. Her passion for this sport was on full display at this game.”

PERRYVILLE GIRLS SOCCER DEFEATS HARFORD TECH 2-1

continued from A-1

the right post just past the goalkeeper for the eventual game-winner with 2:12 remaining, and Murrell used her knowledge of playing on the same club team as the Harford Tech goalkeeper informed her selection. “They brought everyone back and plugged up the middle, so I had to find a way to get to the outside,” Murrell said. “I just knew I was going to aim for the opposite corner just like I did in the first half because she cuts off that front angle

and does not make it easy for you. It was only getting on the ground, hitting a hard shot, and getting it into the corner.” Perryville did not let Harford Tech create any serious scoring chance over the final two minutes to hold on to the victory. The Panthers used the game with the Cobras as a litmus test to see where the program is at this point of the season, and head coach John Myers is especially happy with the victory because of the competition they played.

“Just knowing that Harford Tech is 1A, being able to face them, and playing quality competition is huge for us,”Myers said. “Getting the win on our home field, getting the support from the administration and fans and playing in front of them is amazing.” Perryville jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Murrell scored in the sixth minute in a similar manner as her game-winner later in the game, and that goal allowed it to get into a strong defensive formation early. One reason the Pan-

thers jumped out to an early lead was a result of knowing what to expect from the Cobras because the two teams played each during a preseason warmup. “After playing them on our play day, we knew that they had a flat and high line in the back, and it was go-

ing to be a game of getting it all the way to the midfield before playing it through or over the top,” Murrell said. “ We have so many fast players on our team, so we were ready for that. The girl who was playing with me up top was ready to check back underneath me, turn and play

that ball over.” Perryville held on to its one-goal lead over Harford Tech all the way until there was about 12 minutes left in the second half when Laney Weaver scored the equalizer from an assist from Ashley Shelton to make it 1-1.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. Join North East High School on Sept 22 for a special night.

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month. According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (2022), suicide is the third leading cause of death for people ages 10-19. North East High School’s football program experienced this first hand on July 28, 2019, when one of their players, Thomas Ocasio III, died by suicide at the age of 16. The NEHS football team has since collaborated with the LIVEFORTHOMAS Foundation* to not only keep Thomas’s memory alive but to show their players they are not alone in whatever they are struggling with, to provide support to their players, and to connect their players with appropriate resources. On September 22, 2023, the NEHS football team will be hosting Suicide Awareness Night during their game against Rising Sun. Be sure to come out to show your support. *The LIVEFORTHOMAS Foundation was founded in 2020 by Thomas’s mom, Amy, and his sister, Michaela. Their mission is to break the stigma, change the face of suicide (it can happen to anyone), and change the narrative men are “weak” if they show emotion/ask for help. On September 30th, the LIVEFORTHOMAS Foundation will be holding a fundraiser, Gatsby Gala, in memory of what would have been Thomas’s 21st birthday. The proceeds from the event will benefit the LIVEFORTHOMAS Foundation to continue with their mission through providing mental health awareness talks, facilitating Youth Mental Health First Aid training, collaborating with CCPS to implement mental health assemblies/programs into the schools, and more. To find out more about the LIVEFORTHOMAS Foundation visit www.liveforthomas.org, Facebook: LiveForThomas, Instagram: live4thomas, or Email: liveforthomas@gmail.com.

Historical Society of Cecil County:

Escape of the Wilmington Bank Robbers By: Travis Humiston A prison break was attempted in early 1874 of the infamous bank robbers, Lawler, Hurlbut, Carter and Hope. From the 28 February 1874 edition of the Cecil Whig: “The four Wilmington bank robbers, Lawler, Hurlbut, Carter and Hope, escaped from the jail at New Castle, Delaware, early on Wednesday morning. Israel Ridings, warden of the jail, was awakened by a slight noise in the yard about one o’clock, and opened the door. He was immediately seized by a dozen men, gagged and handcuffed, and thrown into a coal hole. One of his assailants threatened to kill him with a knife, but Lawler interfered. The party then got over the wall by means of two short ladders tied together, which they had brought. In addition to the bank robbers, they also took away E. Frazier, who was under sentence of imprisonment for life, for the murder of Mr. Allison at Middletown. The rescuers forced open the prisoners’ cells by jackscrews. There were twelve or fifteen in the gang, and they are supposed to have gone to New Castle from Phil-

adelphia. When the escape was discovered, after daylight, the Warden was found in such a condition that it was some time after his release from his bonds before he could speak or stand. It is believed that some women acted as go-betweens for the robbers and their rescuers.” “Big Frank was recaptured in Philadelphia, on Thursday morning last. He was seen on the street by a citizen of Wilmington, who followed him to a lager beer saloon, and then notified a constable, who arrested Frank and locked him up in a station house. He was soon recognized by Detective Hines. It is believed that he was accompanied by Jim Hope, another of the gang, who walked off when Frank was arrested.” Access to the digital newspaper collection of the Cecil County Historical Society is free to members and is included in the $5 library fee for non-members. We are currently open, please visit www.cecilhistory. org for news and updates.

Service Dog inspires Cecil College Scholarship NORTH EAST, Md.: The Cecil College Foundation is excited to announce the creation of The Polito Scholarship that supports Cecil County students. This endowed scholarship fund is designed to help students fulfill their dream of completing an associate degree at Cecil College. “This scholarship is in recognition and appreciation for the acceptance Cecil College has shown in the initial training of these service dogs,” said Cecil College Dean of Arts and Sciences Veronica Dougherty, Ph.D., who has worked with the Seeing Eyes Foundation to help train service dogs. The first year of a puppy’s life is spent with volunteers who are charged with exposing pups to many diverse environments. “A College campus offers an interesting and challenging terrain for these trainees. There are different floor surfaces, stair configurations, glass doors, and elevators, as well as expo-

sure to a variety of people and activities.” The Polito Scholarship was named for one of the 30 seeing-eye puppies trained by Dr. Dougherty while on the Cecil College Campus over the last three decades. Polito was on campus almost every day for two semesters, greeted by students, faculty, and staff. This scholarship was established to support a Cecil County resident enrolled at Cecil College. The College, which prohibits pets on both campuses except for the North East campus nature trail (animals are allowed on campuses in a working capacity with approval), has an environment where these trainees acclimate to large crowds and loud noises at the athletic events and navigate the theater environment at the Milburn Stone Theatre. According to Dr. Dougherty, this level of exposure makes the service dog flexible with its placement upon

graduating from the Seeing Eyes Foundation. She appreciates the College community for providing access to the entire North East campus and the support of

the faculty, staff and students. Polito has been placed with a visually impaired attorney for the past four years.

To apply for this and other Cecil College scholarships, visit cecil.edu/scholarships. If you want to donate to this scholarship and support a student through

a tax-deductible gift, please contact the Cecil College Foundation at foundation@ cecil.edu, call 410-287-1146 or visit www.cecil.edu/foundation.
