WALLACE WINS STATE GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP Noah Wallace goes into the record books as the first male golfer to win three MD State Golf Championships

There aren’t many things people can do in life where they can say they are the first to do it, but with his win in the 2023 MPSSAA 1A/2A State Golf Championship Noah Wallace can say he has. After firing back-to-back 74s across the University of Maryland Golf Course in College Park, the North East High senior became the first male golfer in state history to win three state titles. “The feeling of winning one state championship is an amazing feeling. But to win three, consecutive, it’s absolutely surreal,” said Wallace of his onestroke victory. “Plus, it makes me feel very proud that over the three years I put together six very solid rounds of golf and limited my mistakes.” Unlike Wallace’s win in 2022, where a stellar final round 67 pushed him to a six-stroke win, the gritty golfer had to fight for first place every step of the way. After a rocky start in

Tuesday’s semifinal round, Wallace stared down a 73yard wedge shot on the last hole of his outward nine holes and watched it land just short of the hole, take one hop and drop for an eagle. “When I holed out for eagle, it was a huge momentum change. I had started somewhat poorly on my first nine,” said Wallace. “That shot got me back to even par, put me in the lead, and set me in a perfect position for the rest of the round.” He ended the day one shot behind C. Milton Wright’s Jackson Geyer. In their two most recent meetings, Geyer had defeated Wallace. Playing in the final group for 1A/2A with Wallace and Geyer was Hereford’s Adam Green. Green finished 7th in 2022, a dozen strokes behind Wallace, and started the final round three out of the lead and one behind the three-peat hopeful. Six holes into the cham-

pionship round, Wallace had stumbled at the start, but so had Geyer. Wallace sat tied for the lead with Green, but he didn’t allow himself to be discouraged by a handful of unforced errors. “After making three bogeys (in his first seven holes) it was definitely not the way I wanted to start, but I knew the ones I was trying to beat were not playing their best either,” said Wallace. “So, I tried to call myself down and say ‘your still in this tournament’, and this tournament is still yours to win.” Those thoughts helped Wallace right the ship. He played the next 10 holes even par, while Green rode a roller coaster of two birdies and three bogeys. With Geyer faltering, Wallace held a one stroke advantage walking up the 18th fairway – only he didn’t even know it. “When I was on Hole 16 I had thought I was tied continued on A-4

KATY HAMMER

DJ Piner put himself in the record books at Elkton High School becoming the All-Time Leading Receiver for the Golden Elks in a Single Season.

Katy Hammer is one of the captains for NEHS this year. She has worked hard physically and mentally to push through multiple injuries in her senior season. She came off a tough ankle injury against Rising Sun to become a key part of our success in the playoff game against Elkton. She is an explosive player, never gives up and encourages her team to follow her lead. Using grit and a determination to win, Katy scored the game winning goal to send NEHS to the next round of playoffs. As an opposing coach, if you send two defensive players to mark Katy, you quickly learn you should have sent three.

WALLACE WINS STATE GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP continued from A-1

for the lead. Me and Adam both went par par on 16 and 17, so I figured we were tied going into 18. After him and I teed off and were walking down the fairway in our last hole of high school golf,” said Wallace. “He mentioned that I had a one shot lead over him. From then, I knew if I could stick my 6-iron from 194 yards onto the 18th

green. The championship would most likely be mine. And that’s what I did.” With the weight of a tie lifted, Wallace still needed to sink a 3-foot putt for the win. With his hands shaking as he was on the precipice of history, he sunk the putt. Unlike Webb Heintzelman, Dave Patterson, Keith Unikel, Joe Gross, Patrick Hinch, Joseph Eure, and Alex Hoffman before him, Wallace com-

pleted the hat trick. River Hill’s Benjamin Siriboury also had a chance last week to complete the hat trick. He birdied four of his last six holes to pull himself into a playoff for the title, but fell on the first playoff hole. For this little piece of history, Wallace stands alone.

Marine Service Technology program comes to Cecil County

CHESAPEAKE CITY, Md.: Cecil College continues to meet the workforce needs of local industries with the grand opening and ribbon cutting of its newly launched Marine Service Technology program at the Bohemia Vista Marina, located at 140 Bohemia Vista Marina Road in Chesapeake City, Md. The new Marine Service Technology program will provide students with an introduction to the marine service industry, using a curriculum from the American Boat and Yacht Council. They will be training in a state-of-theart facility provided by Safe Harbor Marinas, where they will learn the fundamentals of marine engines, outboard and inboard maintenance, marine electrical systems, boat safety, industry standards, and more. Upon completing the program, students can earn their Marine Service Technician Certificate. “Our vision has always been clear,” said Miles Dean, Dean for Continuing Education and Workforce Development. “At Cecil College, we prioritize staying attuned to the demands and shifts in the industry. The evident need for an expanded marine technology workforce was a clarion call for us, one that we could not ignore.” In an era where the maritime industry’s heartbeat is felt more prom-

inently than ever, Cecil County’s marinas found themselves at a crossroads, grappling with the persistent challenge of finding qualified technicians locally. This predicament led them to cast their recruitment nets far and wide, drawing individuals from across the nation to work in our local marinas. “Cecil College’s Marine Service Technology program is a beacon of innovation and forward-thinking. Investing in our community and its future technicians strengthens our local workforce and reinforces Cecil County’s reputation as a hub of marine excellence,” said Cecil College President Dr. Mary Way Bolt. Recognizing this palpable gap, Cecil College, true to its mission of advancing community growth through education, has pioneered a new Marine Service Technology program. Designed to equip individuals with specialized skills and knowledge, this program promises to usher in a new era of maritime technicians. This initiative is a testament to the College’s commitment to adapt and respond to workforce needs and underlines its dedication to fostering local talent. In attendance at the ceremony were Cecil County Executive Danielle Hornberger, Executive Vice President

of Eastern Operations for Safe Harbor Marinas Daniel Mock, Executive Director for Upper Shore Regional Council Susan O’Neill, and Executive Director for Marine Trades Association of Maryland John Stefancik. The invaluable partnership with Safe Harbor Marinas further solidified the program’s inception. In a groundbreaking move, Safe Harbor Marinas generously pledged to construct a state-of-the-art facility at the Bohemia Vista Marina in Chesapeake City. This facility will serve as the training ground for the Marine Service Technology program, ensuring that students have access to hands-on experiences in a real-world environment. This strategic collaboration showcases the seamless synergy between educational institutions and industry partners. “Safe Harbor’s inclination to look afar for talent and training compelled us to introspect. We realized that if we could harness our resources collectively, we could build something monumental here in Cecil County. It’s a win-win for our local marina owners, Safe Harbor, and Cecil College,” said Dean.
