UPCOMING SHOWS FOR ELKTON MAGIC
Wednesday,
Pro Angler Mike “Ike” Iaconelli returns to shores of Cecil
Pro angler Mike Iaconelli returns to Cecil with his 2023 Ike Foundation Pro-Am Bass Tournament on June 10th. Registration is still open and required for anglers wanting to compete in the tournament.
Mike has been a fan-favorite angler across the USA for more than 20 years. He’s the only angler to win the Bassmaster Classic, Bassmaster Angler of the Year, and the B.A.S.S. Federation Nation Championship.
In addition to competing at the top level of professional bass fishing, Mike is driven to grow the sport with his own entertainment, education, and charitable organizations: The Bass University, Ike Live Podcast, "Going Ike" YouTube Series, "Ike in the Shop" YouTube Series, and The Ike Foundation®. Iaconelli is host of the television show, “City Limits” on the Pursuit Channel, “Fish My City” on NatGeo Wild, and "'My World with Mike Iacon-
elli" on CBS Sports Network.
The Ike Foundation is holding the June 10th Pro Am Tournament at North East Community Park to support his charitable efforts. "I firmly believe every child deserves the opportunity to connect with nature and experience the joy of fishing. Through the Ike Foundation, we strive to empower and educate young anglers, teaching them not only the skills to catch fish but also the importance of
conservation and environmental stewardship. Fishing has the power to change lives, and by nurturing the next generation of anglers, we can make a positive impact on our sport and our planet", affirms Mike Iaconelli. The Foundation hosts youth events each year and has a scholarship program.
Cecil County Tourism and the Town of North East co-host the tournament.
“We’re so proud to once again be part of this wonderful event”, said County Executive Danielle Hornberger. “We love it when people visit Cecil and enjoy our beautiful natural resources and all we have to offer”. “Mike and the Foundation team are amazing and we’re honored to be the selected location”, adds Tourism Manager Sandy Maruchi-Turner. Anglers from the region compete for prizes and support the Foundation. Local businesses signing on in support include Integrity Real Estate, Ray Logging, Buttonwood Beach Camping Resort, Reynolds Trucking & Excavating, and more.
Mike Iaconelli’s professional bass fishing career has been marked by success and innovation as he established himself as one of the most accomplished, recognizable and respected figures in the sportfishing world. Mike and his wife, Becky, have four children. Drew, Rylie, Vegas and Estella. He enjoys traveling, camping, hiking and collecting old ink bottles.
“The Town of North East looks forward to this very worthwhile event, and to seeing the Ioconelli family, each year” says Melissa MacKenzie, Town Administrator. “We’re excited to cohost the Ike Foundation to enable them to bring fishing
opportunities to our youth. We encourage fishing fans to bring a chair and come to the blast-off in the morning, or arrive early for the afternoon weigh-in to enjoy the beautiful surroundings at North East Community Park”. The park offers a waterfront walking trail, picnic area, playground, and pet friendly Upper Bay Museum.
For several years the tournament took place in New Jersey but relocated to the Upper Bay a few years ago. "Cecil County has been an incredible partner and supporter of the Ike Foundation's mission. Their dedication to fostering youth involvement in fishing and conservation is commendable. The Town of North East and Cecil County's commitment to nurturing a love for fishing and preserving our natural resources is truly inspiring. Together, we're making a lasting difference in the lives of young anglers and ensuring a brighter future for our sport and the environment”, said Iaconelli
Top Prize for the winner is a bass boat and motor package. 1st to 5th places receive cash prizes, and there are numerous merchandise prizes. Launch time is 6:00AM and Weigh-In starts at 2PM. Fans can see Mike “Ike” Iaconelli and Pete “The Dean” Gluszek.

Rising Sun’s Street Lamp Productions kicks off summer schedule with the return of Freaky Friday
RISING SUN - Street
Lamp Productions brought Disney’s Freaky Friday Musical back to the black box for the first time since its regional premiere in 2019.
The storyline is one known by almost everyone in the audience thanks to the 1976 and 2003 Disney movies and the intimate nature of the seating at Street
Lamp can make you feel as though you are in the production and not just watching.
The cast consists of several students we’ve covered previously this year with Kinsey McCulloch (Beauty and the Beast), Chris Williams (Beauty and the Beast) and Xander Kornak (SpongeBob the Musical) being in the diverse cast of students
from the Tri-State region..
The Hourglass Cast performed during the show I attended where Emily Sinclair and Grace Dermott flawlessly played the lead characters.
Street Lamp’s summer schedule has three more shows coming up and tickets to the events can be hard to get due to the very lim-
ited number of seats available. Plan ahead and get your tickets as soon as they go on sale later this month and enjoy the summer shows with Cecil’s best.
For more information on upcoming shows and the Summer Camps available check out Street Lamp Productions website at StreetLampProductions.org

Golf League Offers Summer Opportunities
By StaffFurnace Bay Golf Course’s golf league is providing another option for young golfers in the Harford and Cecil County region this Spring and early Summer. Targeted at high school or soon-to-be high school golfers, the league plays ninehole matches every Wednesday night at the course in Perryville, Maryland. The league is run by
Mike Rice, who also coaches at Perryville, and has attracted golfers from many local schools in both counties. The play is fun and competitive, while at the same time offering some instruction and guidance for younger and inexperienced golfers hoping to compete next Fall for a spot on their school teams. For the affordable cost of $200 for 10 weeks of play or $100 for 5 weeks of play, the kids are exposed to
the feel of high school golf in a learning environment. Range balls are included. At the end of the league season on July 12, there are even prizes for competitors that include donations of golf clubs, golf balls and apparel. If interested, contact the Furnace Bay pro shop for more information.
Cecil College was a perfect fit for First-Generation Alumna Jessica Cooke
ELKTON, Md. – Discovering one’s passion sometimes takes a lifetime. For others, it comes in an inspirational moment. That was the situation for Jessica Cooke when she first placed her hands in wet clay in the ceramic studio at Cecil College’s Elkton Station.
“Painting has been a passion my whole life. But if I hadn’t decided to attend Cecil College, I would never have discovered my love for working with clay and the empowerment it instills,” said Cooke, a 2018 North East High School graduate. “I now know the direction I wish for my life.”
Cooke planned to attend Cecil College for two years as it enabled her to keep her job and save money while working toward an associate degree. Fortune was in her favor as Elkton Station was closer to her home than Cecil’s main campus, which put the possibility of taking a ceramic course on her pathway to success.
“I tried out a class thinking it was something different in art, and that class was my introduction to ceramics. I loved it so much that I changed my major to fine arts,” said Cooke.
Upon graduating from Cecil College with an Asso-
ciate of Fine Arts, she transferred to Salisbury University, where she carried over her passion for ceramics. Being in a university setting assisted in growing self-confidence on the potter’s wheel along with sculpting. Cooke found confidence through the ability to help classmates with challenging tasks in addition to her skill loading kilns, which is a very meticulous chore. In May of 2022, Cooke completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.
“Jessi’s creativity, enthusiasm, and academic success made her a standout student in the Art and Design Program,” said Cecil College Art Professor Lauren Vanni, who runs the ceramic’s lab. “She was continuously recognized for her outstanding work, and she earned the departmental award in Art & Design in the spring of 2020. This award goes to an outstanding student selected by the art faculty. Her achievements continued as she pursued her bachelor’s degree at Salisbury University.”
All of Jessi’s wonderful qualities that made her a standout student then, make her an integral part of our team in the ceramics studio at Cecil College today. We are happy to have her back in the studio helping students
as the Ceramics Studio Assistant. She is an inspiration to students.
Cooke has now returned to her first alma mater to perfect her skills as a studio assistant at Cecil College’s ceramics lab. This offers the opportunity to enhance her knowledge of pottery and ceramics. The continual challenge remains making glazes that produce the outcome she seeks for each pottery piece.
“Learning about glazes was challenging when I first entered the studio, which differs greatly from painting. A glaze may be brown in liquid form, but it comes out bright blue when you fire it in the kiln. Visually, it is different from what you expect it to be. I worked on a couple of pieces for hours, and I was very proud of them. Then, when they came out of the kiln, it was not what I expected,” said Cooke.
Realizing pottery and ceramics entail lifelong learning, Cooke follows several social media pages that provide various tips and tricks as well as subscribing to numerous YouTube channels which provided inspiration and knowledge. She is seeking everything she can learn and maintains a notebook to record the effect of each glaze. She says potters must remain open-minded about the outcome of each piece and how it will appear.
Working in the Elkton Station studio also allows Cooke to experiment with the different clay forms, as each has its unique quality. Porcelain, which comes from a refined clay fired at very high temperatures of approximately 1,200–1,450 degrees Celsius, is the most challenging material due to its lack of grog. Grog is a raw material usually made from crushed and ground potsherds, reintroduced back into crude clay to temper it before making ceramic ware.
Cooke, who is in the process of mastering working with strong and durable stone-
ware, enjoys applying the Raku technique. Raku is a Japanese style of pottery where the clay object is removed from the kiln at the height of the firing, causing it to cool very rapidly.
“There are Raku glazes that are not food safe because of the heavy metals in them, but you get a fantastic result after the firing,” said Cooke. She added that Raku ware is commonly found in tea bowls. “Working in the ceramic studio, I am doing what I love. I am helping other students, and I am learning new skills. It is an extensive learning process because I want my own studio someday. I cannot wait to get into the studio to work on my projects.”
Her dream is to establish an art studio where community members can come to make art and learn more about ceramics and painting, and she has begun to gather equipment, including a kiln given to her by a family member.
“I plan to save money in the next few years and determine the next step. In the meantime, I am trying to learn as much as possible,” said Cooke. “I want a pleasant, inviting environment. I would love to have a place where people want to come to create their art, discuss their work, and help one another.”
While pottery and ceramics are her primary focus, she hasn’t forgotten about her first love of painting, looking for a way to integrate both mediums. She states the most
significant difference between her painting and clay is the ceramic piece is done when it comes out of the kiln, whereas her paintings are continually worked on by applying different layers.
“I use many painting techniques with clay, such as using a lot of underglazes and masking off where the clay will show through. I start with my sketchbook for the basic design. It helps to determine where to mask off a portion of the clay with wax and when to use a lot of layers. This is time-consuming, but I enjoy the outcome,” said Cooke. “I want my paintings and ceramic pieces to seem like they are talking to one another. I want them to feel connected to someone even though one is two-dimensional and the other is three-dimensional. I work on pieces simultaneously.”
Cooke plans to continue her education soon as the University of Delaware offers an MFA degree. Her current work will be part of the portfolio she will present as part of the admissions process, which is on display this summer at the Milburn Stone Theatre Gallery – “Memory Garden.” This exhibit runs through August 25. Through detailed paintings and playful ceramics, Cooke explores nostalgia, grief, forgiveness, and layered identity. Memory Garden uses sentimentality as a love letter for old childhood memories and to seek closure from inevitable realities.

CCPR Multi Sports Activity Camp. The sun will be shining and the fun never ends! Our camp is designed to keep kids active, engaged, and entertained with a wide range of activities, including dodgeball, tag, soccer, and basketball.
In our dodgeball games, campers will get to show off their throwing and dodging skills as they try to eliminate their opponents. They’ll have a blast strategizing with their teammates and ducking and weaving to avoid getting hit by the ball in 3 different modified games as well as regular dodgeball. These games are supervised by Dillon and will be a lot of fun.
Our tag games will have campers running, jumping, and crawling as they try to avoid being “it.” They’ll have to use their speed, agility, and quick reflexes to stay ahead of their pursuers and make it to the safety zone. Ben is the camp leader running the tag activities.

As a parent, like most people, I always “knew” Kelly as the popular voice behind CCPS. Since I have served as a Board Member, I had the privilege of working with Kelly and the honor of really knowing her—as a smart, caring, creative, and talented professional. She is an outstanding person and has become a cherished friend, and to say she will be missed is an understatement.
Thank you, Kelly, for your valuable contributions and impact!

KELLY KEETON
"Ms. Kelly Keeton, the highly regarded Cecil County Public Schools Public Information Officer will leave her role at the end of this school year. She has been a familiar and trusted name in the district for over 17 years. Popular among students, especially during her announcements for delayed openings and school closures, Ms. Keeton has provided key leadership to deliver accurate and timely information to all stakeholders. Additionally, during her time with CCPS, she served as the Coordinator of the Business and Education Partnership Advisory Council and built strong connections between the public schools and area businesses. We are proud of her vision, hard work, and commitment to Cecil County Public Schools. Thank you Kelly - we will miss you!"
Jeff Lawson, Ed. D. Superintendent Cecil County Public SchoolsI always tease Kelly that she is a local celebrity, however, I really do think she is. Everyone who has had a student in or has been a part of CCPS knows Kelly Keeton. I was in the grocery store one day and got a call from CCPS while I was checking out. The young man who was working the register asked “Is that Ms. Keeton?” He excitedly said, “I Love her. Is she canceling school?” Several other workers then chimed in that they love Kelly as well. She really is a local celebrity. She has been a huge part of CCPS and she will be greatly missed. I wish her all the best in her future endeavors.
Dianne Heath Vice President Cecil County Board of EducationKelly Keeton served as the spokesperson for the Cecil County Public School System and coordinated the business partnerships program. She also worked in the areas of safe schools, crisis management, communications, event planning, and public relations. Her enthusiasm, positive attitude, dedication, and beautiful smile has been the face of CCPS for many years. Kelly Keeton has been a rockstar on the CCPS team! We will miss her very much. I would like to thank Kelly Keeton personally and professionally for our working relationship. She is such a great friend and I know she will continue to be a huge assest to our county. The entire Miller family wishes you and your family the very best.
Al Miller Cecil County CouncilKelly always and I mean always showed up with a contagious smile and a willingness to help. She was a huge asset to CCPS. Nobody could cancel school like she could!
Jim Miro Principal Rising Sun High SchoolThe PIO position in CCPS was a fairly recent creation as Kelly applied to be the second all time. Henry Shaffer and I interviewed Kelly along with several other candidates. We selected Kelly who at the time had little experience but exhibited all the intangibles we wanted. Either we were lucky or Kelly made us look smart or both! What a star she became. Dedicated, creative, smart and just a genuine human being. Thank you Kelly. My best wishes to you in your new ventures!
Dr. Carl Roberts Superintendent (1996 - 2008) Cecil County Public SchoolsI admire Kelly Keeton in so many ways. She has so many endearing qualities that made her so important to Cecil County Public Schools. I am blessed to have worked two doors down from her for several years. You will be missed.
More than the voice of snow day announcements, more than a messenger for CCPSKelly has been at the heart of Cecil County Public Schools and will be irreplaceable. We are richer for having worked alongside her and wish her every good thing moving forward.
With the departure of Kelly Keeton from Cecil County Public Schools, as well as her roles within the Business and Education Partnership Advisory Council (BEPAC) and as the Public Information Officer (PIO) we are losing a voice of stability to these positions while she leaves a lasting impact on our educational community.
Kelly Keeton consistently displayed unwavering dedication, expertise, and a commitment to the well-being of our students, staff, and community. Her leadership within BEPAC and as the PIO ensured open communication, transparency, and a supportive environment for all. Her contributions have helped shape policies and initiatives, enhancing the quality of education in our district.
We express our heartfelt appreciation for Kelly's remarkable efforts. Her legacy exemplifies her unwavering commitment, professionalism, and exceptional leadership. As she embarks on a new chapter, we extend our best wishes for her future endeavors, confident that her passion and drive will continue to inspire others.
It is so easy to celebrate and honor Kelly. She is a stabilizing force in our schools. No matter what the environment or situation, she stays above it - with grace, class, wisdom, and intelligence. I am lucky to have her as a mentor and friend.
Christie Stephens Vice PresidentMs. Keeton is an institution for an entire generation of Cecil County students because of her reign as the school closing "storm queen" for some twenty years. But what most people do not realize is how important she has been leveraging collaboration between the schools and the businesses of the area through her outstanding leadership of BPAC. She has done a lot of good for our community.
David Dollenger Principal North East High School Beth Creek Youth Empowerment Source Joe Shephard Owner, Shephard Design Co. Executive Board Member for BEPAC at Cecil County Public SchoolsThanks for all of your support and professionalism throughout the years. Your poise, grace, and optimism is true reflection of the best that Cecil County Public Schools has to offer Best wishes for and good luck on all of your future endeavors!
Justin Zimmerman Principal Bohemia Manor Middle/High SchoolCongratulations on 17 years with CCPS. You brought a spirit of excellence and a genuine passion for education that has left an indelible mark on countless students, teachers, and staff members. You can still call us on snow days !
Travis Marion Mayor Town of Rising SunKelly Keeton has been a staple to Cecil County for over a decade. Students would cheer to hear her voice come across their phones when she called to announce a winter weather closure. She is a local celebrity because she has reached out to so many people in the county. We will miss her and I wish her the best of luck.
