Manifesto
PULP ARCHITECTURE People’s memory about city is composited by the buildings and other elements like landscape and monument inside it. This memory give them an expectation of the experience within one building. Those expectation and memorial symbolic items become the reference for the components that have been play around in this design. Additionally, pulping is the main technique that has been used to make every part compromise with each other and make them a unity. In this design, the basic form language and spatial language for different components are defined by the functional role it acts in the building comparing to a city. All the components within the design are supposed to compromise and negotiate with its neighbours. Thus the technique I’ve been used is to bring a giant roof which suggest the lanscape in a city for the clusters, and then emphasize the in-between space between different components . The soft shape of the giant roof reflect the dialogue between the pulp space and each component. Finally, the chaos and conflict between different elements have been cultivated through an organic sharing space, and it also pemit the further expansion of the building. The shape of the giant roof is the image of first stage for pulping, the building itself still continue to grow and expand in future.

Manifesto
PULP ARCHITECTURE I support the public buildings to have the personality of conflict and confront. Just as those space created by the natural, there should not be distinct and so called reseasonable circulation in the building. What has already been pre-designed will diminish the serendipitous event happened in the building, and make it dull and lacks personalities.

pulp/'pelp/ n. 1. A soft moist shapeless mass of matter. 2. A magazine or book containing lurid subject matter and being characteristically printed on rough unfinished paper

PULP ? CREAM! - Monument Pulp Architecture refers to a space without a specific shape and without a predictable experience. I was quite interested with how the pop artists play with those mass culture icons around us, how they add arbitrariness to those well-known art pieces. The idea of my proposal comes out from the observation of ice-cream cone’s melting process, with one part of the cone keep shrinking and another part stay the same. What I want to express through this design is the conflict between the conventional shape-fixed space and the unpredictable pulp space and also the conflict between different materials, the unstable material like membrane and more solid one like steel. Basically, the monument is consist of two parts. One is a steel structure glass tube, which act as an entrance of the monument. Another part is the inflatable pulp space, which acts as the exhibition hall for the visitors to wander inside. The pulp part is consist of inflatable pneumatic surface and steel structure. So the volume of the space keeps breathing over time since the membrane surface will be effected by the temperature and light. So basically visitors’ experience of the exhibition part is unpredictable and might challenge their previous understanding about architectural space.

superorganism- Market Circulation space plays the most important part in the market. So my strategy is to add an organism circulation system in conventional market. The is organism as I reckon is the most active and dynamic space in the market architecture since the trading activity is not a one-day-last one. The circulation organism, which is also made of membrane surface, would inflate or deflate based on how many people use the space. In 9 o’clock in morning, when people buying the groceries, the organism will expand so that it can contain more people.

superorganism - Library In the library design, I was inspired by the endless house by Frederick Kiesler. I’ve test the idea about the space continuity, since only when the division made by wall, floor and window has been removed, the shapeless pulp space could be changed as a whole. The organism here just like an embryo, it breeding the potential events that would happen in the architecture. The organism structure in the library, which is acting as the reading space, keeps growing and invading into the space for the storage of books. Where people begin to read, where the architecture start to grow.

pink gum - TOwn hall My manifesto for the public architecture is PULP ARCHITECTURE. I reckon that the word pulp, which is used to describe a soft moist shapeless mass of matter, refers to a space without a specific shape and without a predictable experience. It means that the state of the architectural space might not be stable in terms of volume, colour, light and materials. It also suggests that the different functional space within the architecture may be in conflict with each other and it encourages that each part in a pulp architecture need to be identified and individualize and also encourage the confrontation and negotiation between them.

Manifesto
PULP ARCHITECTURE We use the word ‘pulp’ to describe the matter with soft moist shapeless mass. It encourages the chaos instead of order; it encourages conflict instead of harmony; it encourages heterogeneity instead of homogeneity; it encourages that every part in the building should be identified and individualized; it also encourages that each of them need to be in conflict with others and negotiated with others. Pulp means that everything can be architecture, our experience about architecture can be unpredictable, it can be guided by a sort of hints. Without a specific shape, the state of the architectural space might not be stable in terms of volume, colour, light and materials. The pulp space, which is not merely an extension of the human body, can provide an environment where the chaos and serendipitous events would be activated.

PULP ARCHITECTURE People’s memory about city is composited by the buildings and other elements like landscape and monument inside it. This kind of memory give us an expectation of how a building might be used.So how to break this kind of expectation and bring chaos into the building is what I’m trying to explore. In this design, the basic shape and architectural language for different functional part is defined by the what kind of role it acts in the building comparing to a city. Just like what a building actually do in the city, these different prototypes of building must compromise with its neighbours and trying to become a unity. Thus the technique I’ve been used is to overlap and pulp the interface between different elements. By borrowing the architecture language from the neighbours, the boundary between elements become ambiguous, thus where the pulp staff happen. Finally, the chaos and conflict between different elements have been cultivated through an organic sharing space, and it also pemit the further expansion of the building. The shape of the giant roof is the image of first stage for pulping, the building itself still continue to grow and expand in future.
