PUBLISHER UPDATE

k so the finals are here and we are about to witness the likes of labron James vs Tim duncan. This only means one thing, that after a possible 7 games we will enter the boring season of sports. not, that i don’t like baseball, i just can’t watch it on a consistant basis.

even the teams get it wrong. let’s look at the players undrafted, kurt Warner, John randle, Tony romo, Wes Welker etc. These players are those that slip through the crack. even those that were drafted in latter rounds i.e. Tom Brady. We sit and get mad and holler and the picks our teams made and predict that we have another bust draft and somebody like Terrell davis shows up.

My dad can watch it and have some serious opinions on it. i just wait til the playoffs then make my predictions. i can hold a decent conversation on baseball, its’ just not my sport.

Having said that, don’tget mad until the players take the field.

now, on to the real subject at hand. Golf. i had the great honor of volunteering at the Byron nelson and besides it being hot, it was a very nice event. My golf hand is not that good, i just like going and getting away.

i love the way Tiger Woods delt with sergio Garica, sometime silence is the best way to deal with a problem. Tiger let his words speak on the golf cource. That shows class and how much Tiger has grown.

We all must find time to get away and golf is that for me. as a matter of fact, i sometimes hate to get off the course when the 18 hole are finished. That’s not to say i can play, i just like the game.

ok, so last but not least, i have to change directions, because we have to say goodbye to one of the greatest defensive ends in football. deacon Jones has past and he was a beast. one of my favorite stories was told to me by rayfield Wright.

That’s just food for thought, now let me get to some of the stories in this issue and give my thoughts. starting with the 25 undrafted free agents. it just goes to show that the draft experts don’t always have it correct. remember the draft that emmitt smith came out of. dallas was trying to trade up and draft James francis the linebacker from Baylor. couldn’t get him and had to settle for the number 17th pick (emmitt smith).

Wright was drafted as a Tight end but due to injuries to the cowboys front line, Tom landry desided to insert rayfield in after John neely got hurt.

What about the Troy aikman draft and the second Tony Mandrich was taken with the 2nd pick overall. This just goes to show that

The first person he faced was decon Jones, and the first words he herd was, “boy do yo mamma know you are here.” decon was trully an icon and he coined the phrase sack, which he did often. unofficial he had 189 sacks which would rank him just behind Bruce smith and reggie White.

THE

NFL

By: Mark ross special to 411 sports

e

ven though 254 players were taken in the 2013 nfl draft, they aren't the only ones who will get a chance to make an nfl roster this fall. every team signs numerous undrafted free agents following the festivities in new york. as history has shown, more than a fair share of these udfas not only play in the nfl, but enjoy long and productive careers. in fact, a select few have already been inducted into the Pro football Hall of fame with the possibility of more to come. could Tyler Bray, da'rick rogers, kevin reddick, Matt scott or chase Thomas be that next udfa who makes the Pro Bowl or becomes an all-Pro? Here’s a look at those nfl stars who earned it the hard way. our list of the top 25 undrafted free agents begins with the 1988 draft, so you will not see Hall of famers like dick “night Train” lane, Warren Moon or Willie Wood below. 1. Kurt warner, qb, northern Iowa He played in three super Bowls with the rams and cardinals and won the league’s MVP twice. He also was MVP of super Bowl XXXiV when st. louis defeated the Titans 2316. Warner holds many postseason records and should make the Hall of fame. 2. John randle, dt, texas a&I The ferocious Vikings pass-rusher was inducted into the Hall of fame in 2010. randle totaled 137.5 sacks in his 14 seasons with the Vikings and seahawks. He made seven Pro Bowls and was elected to the nfl’s alldecade Team of the 1990s. 3. antonio gates, te, Kent state The chargers turned to the basketball court to find Gates, who did not play college football. He’s made eight Pro Bowls in 10 seasons in san diego, and Gates has amassed over 8,300 receiving yards and 83 touchdowns in his career. 4. wes welker, wr, texas tech The ultra-quick Welker was initially signed by san diego following the 2004 draft, but then was cut and landed in Miami. He joined new england in 2007 and proceeded to put up an nfl-leading 672 receptions, along with 7,459 yards and 37 touchdowns, in his six seasons with the Patriots. Welker signed with denver as a free agent in March, meaning he will go from one future Hall of fame quarterback (Tom Brady) to another (Peyton Manning).

5. adam Vinatieri, K, south dakota state some may disagree with having a kicker this high, but Vinatieri’s contributions to elite teams should not be undervalued. He has been a part of four championships with the Patriots and colts and made a last-second, game-winner in two of those super Bowls. 6. tony romo, qb, eastern Illinois The popular, yet polarizing, cowboys signal caller is still building his legacy, but he has already made three Pro Bowls and tossed 177 touchdowns in 93 starts. romo’s career passer rating is a very impressive 95.6. 7. london fletcher, lb, John carroll The undersized tackling machine has been a playmaker with the rams, Bills and redskins for over a decade now. He has never missed a game in 15 nfl seasons and has started every game over the last 12 years. 8. Jeff saturday, c, north carolina The six-time Pro Bowler anchored the colts' offensive line from 2000-11. during his time snapping to Peyton Manning, indy won double-digit games nine times and won super Bowl Xli. saturday played last season in Green Bay and then resigned with indianapolis in early March. The oneday contract allowed the long-time colt the opportunity to officially retire as a member of the team that brought him into the league. 9. brian waters, g, north texas Waters failed to latch on with the cowboys during his first year out of college in 1999, but he found a home in kansas city the next season. The elite blocker made five Pro Bowls with the chiefs and then a sixth with the Patriots in 2011. 10. James harrison, lb, Kent state Harrison played 10 seasons (2002, '04-10) in Pittsburgh prior to signing with cincinnati as a free agent this offseason. The 2008 nfl defensive Player of the year, Harrison went from undrafted rookie to a playmaking force for the steelers and helped the franchise win two more super Bowl titles. 11. rod smith, wr, missouri southern He played his entire 12-year career in denver, and smith’s 849 receptions put him in the top

HIS-STORY WITH GREGORY MOORE

Making the best of his time: Jurickson Profar making it hard to let him go!!!

he Texas rangers will soon have a decision to make. ever since Jurickson Profar, whom many consider to be the top young prospect in all of baseball, was called up to fill in at second base for an injured ian kinsler, he has proven too good to keep off the field. He’s playing so well, in fact, that the ball club will soon be forced to make an incredibly difficult deicsion; should the rangers trade Profar while his stock his high or is he proving to be too valuable to let go? since being called up, the twenty-year-old phenom has added a much needed bat to the rangers’ lineup. in his 30 at-bats with the rangers, he is batting .333, the second highest on the team and showing great discipline behind the plate as well as in the field. sure, it’s early in his young career, but Profar is definitely proving himself to be a super-star in the making.

leaving Profar at second.

more comfortable every day, it's because he is.

But what about the bigger picture?

"sure, i'm getting more comfortable," Profar said after going 3-for-4 on Thursday with a run scored. "i'm trying to be myself. We have a good team here, so i'm confident."

it’s no secret that the rangers are still in need of another strong arm , so should the team use Profar in a trade to bring in an another elite pitcher? after all, many believe that is the one thing that could keep this team from returning to the World series this season and right now Profar’s stock is through the roof. should they strike while the iron is hot? if it looks like baseball's top prospect is getting

When Profar was called up, he split his first four games with leury Garcia. Profar has started five of the rangers' last six games. There is no platoon with Garcia, and rangers manager ron Washington said earlier this week that Profar would play most of the games while ian kinsler is on the 15-day disabled list, likely for three or four more weeks. Washington was emphatic when asked if Profar would keeping playing as he keeps hitting. "He's in the lineup ," Washington said. "Profar's going to play, and leury is going to play also." on the other hand, how can you let a young, elite talent like Profar go? if he continues on this path, he could be one of the top players in baseball for the next decade or more. Many fans feel he is proving himself too valuable to trade. Profar’s play so far has created an interesting dilemma for the rangers, but fortunately for them, it’s a good problem to have.

so what happens when kinsler, one of the team’s best players and an undisputed team leader, returns to the lineup? obviously, both players need to be on the field, and the most likely resolution for the time being will be moving kinsler to the outfield and

TIGER WOODS SAYS ‘IT’S TIME TO MOVE ON’ FROM SERGIO GARCIA 'FRIED CHICKEN' CONTROVERSY

By Hank Gola / neW york daily neWs clearly, Tiger Woods wasn't in the mood to discuss sergio Garcia during his press conference Wednesday at the Memorial, where he tried to spend about as much time answering any lingering questions from the fried chicken flap as he does tapping one in from the lip. it seems he has accepted Garcia's apology, made in public and in a phone call to Woods' agent, Mark steinberg . . . sort of, anyway.

so there you have it. Woods never publicly forgave fuzzy Zoeller in 1997 and he seems perfectly willing to let Garcia twist in his own hot air, at least until they get to Merion, where Garcia plans a face-toface atonement.

asked if he considered letting Garcia apologize to him in person to avoid a distraction at the u.s. open at Merion, he cracked wise, "so i have to fly to Wentworth? i was at home." asked about getting it "done with," even by phone, he said, "it's already done with." so he apologized? "i think he did," he said. "in person? "not in person, no," he said. so you've accepted it? "yeah. it's time to move on," he said.

until then, Woods, who made his first trip ever to Merion for a rainy practice round Tuesday, is concentrating on defending his fifth title in Jack nicklaus' event at Muirfield Village in ohio and adding to his haul of four 2013 wins by winning a second straight after the Players championship. "absolutely," he said. "it's about playing well, hopefully winning the event and carrying that confidence into the open. i already have most of the lines and the things that i'll be working on next week, but it's about this week and it's about winning this event. i've won it in the past, i'm defending this year. i'm looking forward to the next four days." at least Woods won't have to worry about any

contentious pairings, a la sergio, the first two days. He'll be teeing it up with his compadre fred couples. Joe lacava, Woods' current caddie, spent more than two decades on couples' bag and was in the audience at couples' World Golf Hall of fame induction earlier this month. keegan Bradley completes the threesome. "i know there's going to be a lot of kneeling, that's a given, both directions," Woods said. "and we're going to have a good time. freddie is one of my best friends and obviously, Joey being on the bag with him 21 years or 22 years. There's great chemistry there, and it's all fun. it's competitive, too. But we always enjoy each other's company and i'm sure my phone is being blown up right now with him texting me. i'm sure he's probably watching this." Woods was asked one last Garcia-related question near the end of his press conference, whether to comment on why remarks like his are still being made. "Well, i live it," he said. "it's happened my entire life, and it's happened my entire career. so that doesn't surprise me. it exists all around the world, not just in the sport of golf. it exists everywhere. i know that a lot of people are trying to make a difference and trying to make it fairer for us all."

EVEN MAYWEATHER

BUSINESS IN THE NEWS

s

a lot different when it's not selcuk aydin, huh? and as for his whines that the champion "ran like a chicken," perhaps he can explain exactly who it was that battered his kid's face to a reddened, bloody mess. Better yet, maybe he can do so back in the obscurity from which he crawled, so none of us have to listen.

ome follow-up thoughts after the best sports saturday of the year - derby day followed by Mayweather night.

Magnificent Mayweather: one day, perhaps he'll convince people that he is what he says he is - one of the greatest fighters of all time. in the mean time, it seems "Money" will simply have to go about his business winning fights, and leave those chats for others. To these eyes, the one-sided clinic against Guerrero simply added to a pile of evidence i'd already considered beyond reasonable doubt, that he'd give any welterweight of the past 30 years (and yes, that means leonard, Hearns, duran and Benitez, too) anything they wanted and more. a Mouthful of ruben: Maybe, just maybe, a couple dozen looks at saturday's replay will convince a certain fighter's father of what the rest of us (including his son) seem to understand - that Mayweather was the better man regardless of what form the action took. When the fighters were stock still in ring center, Mayweather landed cleaner, sharper shots. When the action moved to the ropes, Mayweather had an answer for everything Guerrero asked. and when the champion chose to incorporate lateral movement, the supposedly too rough and too tough Guerrero had nothing in his toolkit to do anything about it. funny how it looks

Wlad's a winner: scoring three knockdowns of a younger man considered at least on the fringe of contention by the major sanctioning bodies, klitschko showed that he still belongs at the top of any legitimate opinion-based heap of heavyweights. and with a 14th successful risk of the iBf and iBo titles he won in 2006, he took one six-foot, six-inch step closer to the numerical defense watermarks established by Joe louis (26) and larry Holmes (20). Magic from Malignaggi: The brash Brooklynite was a clear winner in the opening salvo of banter with imminent challenger adrien Broner, whom he'll meet on June 22. Paulie's rocky-related retort to Broner's juvenile T-shirt was spot on, and his analysis throughout the rest of the showtime telecast lifts him to the top of the list current/former fights moonlighting as TV

broadcasters. Bonbons for Broner: He fought at 135 pounds in his last fight and is jumping to 147 to face Malignaggi at the Barclays center, but it appeared saturday as though adrien would need to cut some serious weight just to get within range of the welterweight area code. "He looks like he's been training at the buffet," Malignaggi adroitly said. love for love: The unbeaten detroit middleweight may or may not have deserved the decision - two judges were for him, one judge and most of the crowd were against him (i gave it to rosado by a point, by the way) - but, win, lose or draw, he established himself as a perfectly legit commodity at 160 pounds against former world title challenger Gabriel rosado. The choice of foe was questioned by many, but love proved he belonged and will get at least a few honorable mentions for 2013 fight of the year. on with the showtime: long considered the second banana of the two premium cable boxing options, showtime used the year's first super fight pay-per-view to illustrate precisely how much the gap has closed. With floyd Mayweather Jr. in the fold for 30 months - and talents like abner Mares, canelo alvarez and danny Garcia close behind - it seems many of the best fights to be made will be on showtime's air or its PPV broadcasts. add in the fact that it'll mean Jimmy lennon instead of Michael "look at Me" Buffer, and it's a win-win for everyone.

Those parallels have led people to ask one big, fat juicy question: is leBron better than Michael Jordan? right now, that answer is a resounding no!

can leBron eventually pass Jordan as the best player ever when all is said and done? is it even in the realm of possibility? We've broken down every aspect of the leBron James vs. Michael Jordan

Those are, in order, the ages of dwyane Wade, leBron, kevin durant and russell Westbrook. i think it's pretty safe to say that for leBron to at least match Jordan in the court of public opinion, he would need to at least match Jordan's six championship rings. With that in mind, let's push those numbers up by five. in other words, assuming leBron stays in Miami, he and Wade would both be well past their primes upon winning their sixth ring. Why is that relevant? didn't Jordan win several rings in his 30s? Because durant and Westbrook will both be in their prime when that happens. do you really want to bet on a 36-year-old Wade and 33-yearold leBron beating those two in their prime?

argument. Between statistics, rings, teammates, era and hairline, there are more articles, blogs, columns, podcasts and ancient scrolls written on the pair than any other in nBa history. yet through all of that, there is one factor that nobody really wants to acknowledge.... Time. you'd think with leBron's receding hairline (that's right, i'm going for one hairline joke every paragraph), this would become a more prominent feature in such debates, but neither side ever seems to acknowledge the very simple fact that leBron simply doesn't have enough time to catch Jordan. Why? i'll give you four numbers that

page

tell the whole story: 31, 28, 24, 24.

www.411sportsnews.com

oh, and that is assuming that Miami beats oklahoma city or a team good enough to beat oklahoma city six years in a row. That is not happening. it would be completely unpre-cedented in postmerger nBa history. since Bill russell's celtics, no team has won more than three titles in a row. Therefore, realistically, leBron probably won't be chasing ring no. 6 when he's 33, he'll be fighting for no. 3 or no. 4. if he wants to get to six, it will probably be a chase that leads him into his late 30s. again, think of father Time. do you really want to bet on a 37-year-old leBron against a 33-year-old durant? This brings up another factor: aging. leBron's game is based largely on June 2013

COVER STORY athleticism. How well is he going to age? How will he adjust to fading physical skills? remember, durant's game is based largely on shooting. He will age like a fine wine. leBron? We can't be sure. The longer that this drags on, the better that it gets for durant (who, as of right now, cannot be compared to either but still stands to benefit in his own right). "But wait, sam," you're probably thinking. "can't leBron make up for a few lost rings with superior stats?" The answer is a resounding no. counting stats (points per game, assists per game, rebounds per game etc.) are completely useless in regards to comparing players from different eras. Too many circumstances, such as teammates, level of competition, rule changes and playing styles make them impossible to really quantify. The only stats that really matter when comparing across era are efficiency stats. in particular, there are five that do the best job of measuring overall impact on the court: Per, Win shares, defensive Win shares, offensive rating and defensive rating. even when you consider Jordan's two-year nightmare in Washington, he has the edge in Per, Win shares and offensive rating. When you factor in leBron's eventual decline, it is almost a statistical certainty that he will dip below Jordan in defensive rating and defensive Win shares, where he now holds only the slimmest of leads. assuming a fairly standard statistical regression due to age, time will be able to dull his incredible efficiency stats at least to the point where they dip below Jordan's.first of all, let's just see why MJ is so far ahead of leBron in the overall discussion. Here are their career stats: mJ: 30.1 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 5.3 apg, 50% shooting, 33% three-point shooting. 6 championships, 5 mVps, 10 scoring titles lebron: 27.6 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 6.9 apg, 49% shooting, 33% three-point shooting. 1 championship, 3 mVps, 1 scoring title you can see how far leBron has to go here. He is neck-and-neck with Jordan when it comes to the traditional per-game stats, but in terms of titles and sustained excellence, it's all MJ. for leBron to catch Jordan, he'd need to continue his current dominance for five more years, win at least four more titles, and remain the best player in the world into his mid-30s. leBron's career can be better than Jordan's. it's possible. But it will require leBron to be this good for many, many more years. ultimately, leBron is at a disadvantage in overall legacy because he came into the league out of high school. as you can see from this breakdown of their first 10 years in the league, the first half of MJ's June 2013

THE GREAT DEBATE JAMES VS JORDAN

career was better than leBron's: mJ: 32.2 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 5.9 apg, 51% shooting, 30% three-point shooting. 3 championships, 3 mVps, 7 scoring titles lebron: 27.6 ppg, 7.3 rpg, 6.9 apg, 49% shooting, 33% three-point shooting. 1 championship, 3 mVps, 1 scoring titles MJ came into the league as a full-grown man at age 21. leBron, on the other hand, skipped college and spent his first three years in cleveland learning how to play nBa basketball on the fly. Jordan was an elite player from day one. leBron was merely a great player from day one. as a result, leBron's overall stats will be watered down by those first few years of nondominance. But, as we said, leBron can pass Jordan. Just take a look at each player's best season ever (leBron's stats as of 3/29): m J (199091): 31.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 5.5 apg, 2.7 steals per game, 54% shooting, 31% threepoint shooting, 85% free-throw shooting. won the nba championship, mVp, finals mVp, scoring title lebron (2012-13)*: 26.8 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 7.3 apg, 1.7 steals per game, 56% shooting, 39% three-point shooting, 75% free-throw shooting. the rest is to be determined if leBron wins a the title and the Heat finish with 60+ wins, you can argue that he had a better all-around season than Jordan ever had. leBron has played basketball differently than we've ever seen it played this year. He doesn't have a position, which really means he can play any position. offensively, he can post up, hit threes, drive to the basket, and be his team's primary distributor. defensively, he can guard a bulky power forward one possession and rajon rondo the next possession. MJ, while a more lethal scorer and skillful player, www.411sportsnews.com

was not the hybridized, physical freak that leBron is. leBron will never be able to score like Jordan did, but at this exact point in his career, leBron James can do things Michael Jordan could never do. The 2012-13 version of leBron is a better rebounder, better passer, and more efficient (albeit less dominant) all-around offensive player. and that's the essence of why leBron can be the best player ever: He can do anything he wants on the court, and that destroys our traditional expectations of his potential. He can catch Jordan. But he needs to be just as good as he is this year for the next five years. Think about that a second... leBron is having perhaps the best individual nBa seasons of the last 20 years. But to accumulate the hardware and stats necessary to pass Jordan as the Greatest of all Time, he needs to do it five more times! He needs to average 27-7-7, win four titles, and continue to be better than kevin durant for the next half-decade. Those expectations are almost laughable, but that's what it will take to pass Jordan. so how can leBron reset the clock? The answer is an ironic twist of fate. He would have to ditch Miami for cleveland in 2014. This would align him with a a 22-year-old (in 2014) kyrie irving, who may be just as good as Wade right now. irving would ideally enter his prime just as leBron is leaving his, giving cleveland an eight- to 10-year window of potential championships. if leBron really wants to get to six rings, that's his best shot. But how would the public perceive him for ditching two contending teams in one career? How much would it add to his no-shows against Boston and dallas? Those are asterisks that Jordan simply doesn't have on his resumĂŠ. a return to cleveland might give leBron a chance to match Jordan's objective feats, both through winning and, to a lesser degree, statistically, but it would kill him in the subjective and mythical portion of the discussion. if you want to argue peaks, that's one thing. you could make a strong case for leBron's 2013 campaign against some of Jordan's finest. But the race for the title of greatest of all time isn't measured in peaks. it is measured by the entirety of the mountain. When it comes down to it, time simply won't allow leBron to match the sheer breadth of Jordan's accomplishments. so settle for no. 2, leBron. it was well earned. page

KERRY WASHINGTON IS UNCHAINED AND SCANDALESS, WITH HER CAREER

T

hough she had her start in the indie film world, actress kerry Washington scored her first big breakthrough role as a street-smart mom in the surprise mainstream hit, "save the last dance" (2001). seemingly emerging out of the blue, Washington actually paid her dues on the stage and in a number of small films before her breakout performance, which paved the way for another acclaimed turned in "The united states of leland" (2003). But it was her high-profile performance as ray charles' loyal second wife opposite oscar-winner Jamie foxx in "ray" (2004) that turned her into a major star. also at the time, she was the lead in spike lee's "she Hate Me" (2004) and achieved blockbuster status as alicia Masters in "The fantastic four" (2005) and "The fantastic four: rise of the silver surfer" (2007). Balancing major studio films with smaller acclaimed dramas, she delivered a strong performance as idi amin's out-of-favor wife in "The last king of scotland" (2006) and shined in the ensemble drama "Mother and child" (2010) and Quentin Tarantino's Western "django unchained" (2012). While she made a number of appearances on television, Washington was never the star of a series until "scandal" (aBc, 2012- ), a red-hot drama where she played a fictional version of reallife crisis manager Judy smith. Whether on the big or small screen, the highly ambitious Washington excelled in a variety of roles and became a favorite performer of numerous directors.

My very first feature, "Our Song", was an independent film that was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award. I always feel like I was able to start off my career on the right foot by starting off in independent film because that's where the real work ethic is and that's where the real artistry is, and every now and then you're lucky with a movie like "Django Unchained" to do a studio film that's filled with just as much artistry and passion.

kerry Washington is one of the few actresses killing it on the big screen ("django unchained" and "Peeples"), the small screen ("scandal") and the red carpet -- at the same damn time.kerry Washington is a versatile and fearless actress who continues to shine on both the big screen and small. a native of The Bronx, Washington has received high acclaim for her work on stage, on television and on film. Born in new york city on Jan. 31, 1977, Washington grew up in the Bronx as the only child of her real estate broker father and her professor and educational consultant mother. following the sixth grade, Washington left public school to attend junior high and high school at the prestigious spence school for Girls in Manhattan, while also performing with the Tada! youth Theater group. she later attended George Washington university in Washington, d.c., where she double majored in anthropology and sociology, before continuing to study acting at Michael Howard studios in new york. While attending college, Washington worked closely with the local theater community and helped create a support system for people of color in the arts called shades of the fine arts. after graduation, Washington spent three months in india to immerse herself in a foreign culture and to touch-up on her yoga skills. returning to the united states, Washington moved back home with her parents, where she lived while www.411sportsnews.com

COVER specIal starring in her first feature film, "our song" (2000). Though already 22 at the time, Washington convincingly played a wise, but vulnerable 16-year-old from the crown Heights projects in Brooklyn.Washington debuted in 2000 in the highly acclaimed independent film our sonG and later in the film saVe THe lasT dance, for which she received a Teen choice award for Best Breakout Performance. in her first major film, "save the last dance" (2001), Washington delivered a breakthrough performance as a street-smart teenage mom who takes in a suburban white girl (Julia stiles) who has just transferred to an inner-city school. The surprise hit positioned Washington to play meatier roles, as her stock went up in the casting world.

“I’ll be honest with you. I’m a little bit of a loner. It’s been a big part of my maturing process to learn to allow people to support me. I tend to be very self-reliant and private. And I have this history of wanting to work things out on my own and protect people from what’s going on with me.”

for her next notable project, the made-forcable crime drama, "lift" (showtime, 2002), she played a petty thief forced to give up her way of life to mend a broken relationship with her mother. critically acclaimed for her performance, the role ended up earning Washington a 2002 independent spirit award nomination. coming off such critical acclaim, she stumbled a bit with the critical and financial failure, "Bad company" (2002), a socalled action-comedy starring chris rock and anthony Hopkins. But Washington rebounded nicely with a strong performance in "The united states of leland" (2003), a sullen drama about a suburban teen (ryan Gosling) who commits a shocking crime. Though Washington's performance was singled out for special praise, the film itself was widely criticized for being another maudlin and self-important independent film. reuniting with Hopkins, Washington received a similar reception for "The Human stain" (2003), a less-than-compelling drama about a university professor hiding his true africanamerican identity. despite failures like "Bad

company" and "The Human stain" on her résumé, Washington continued on her career track with typical charm and good cheer, scoring the lead role in "she Hate Me" (2004), a spike lee Joint about a down-and-out biotech executive (anthony Mackie) who is offered some easy money when his ex-girlfriend-turned-lesbian (Washington) offers cash to impregnate her and her girlfriend. once again, both critics and audiences failed to appreciate the film. luckily, Washington managed to score big with her winning performance as della Bea robinson in director Taylor Hackford's "ray" (2004), a biopic about the late genius of soul, ray charles (Jaime foxx). lauded by critics and frequented by audiences, "ray" earned foxx the lion's share of critical and awards attention, though Washington also received kudos for her turn as charles' resolute second wife who endures his drug abuse and infidelity. Meanwhile, she received another crack at major exposure when she signed on to play alicia Masters, the blind love interest of the Thing (Michael chiklis) in the big screen adaptation of the comic book classic, "The fantastic four" (2005). Though originally conceived as a blonde-haired and blueeyed caucasian in the comic books, director Tim story re-cast the part to accommodate the talented Washington. Prior to the comic book adventure, Washington played the only friend and cohort of an assassin (angelina Jolie) who is married to a seemingly boring husband (Brad Pitt) and trapped in a ho-hum suburban life in the action-thriller, "Mr. & Mrs. smith" (2005). from there, she went on to play an unsuspecting chicago suburbanite who comes into possession of a stolen diamond, leading threefoot-high jewel thief (Marlon Wayans) to pose as a baby to get his prize in the misbegotten comedy, "little Man" (2006), another tasteless comedy from the Wayans Brothers. That same year, Washington delivered a dazzling dramatic turn in "The last king of scotland" (2006), playing kay amin, the out-of-favor wife of ruthless ugandan dictator idi amin (forest Whitaker), who has a risky affair with her genocidal husband's personal physician (James Mcavoy). Turning to television, Washington played hottempered attorney chelina Hall in several recurring episodes of the popular david e. kelley legal drama, "Boston legal" (aBc, 200408), which she soon followed with a supporting turn as the other woman in the romantic

www.411sportsnews.com

comedy "i Think i love My Wife" (2007), starring chris rock. after reprising alicia Masters for the critically maligned sequel, "fantastic four: rise of the silver surfer" (2007), Washington was wife to Patrick Wilson, both of whom are terrorized by a racist laPd cop (samuel l. Jackson) in the neil laBute thriller, "lakeview Terrace" (2008). she was next cast by spike lee for a supporting turn in the director's controversial war drama, "Miracle at st. anna" (2008), before playing a tough veteran street cop in the indie crime drama, "life is Hot in cracktown" (2009). following an episode of the comic detective drama, "Psych" (usa network, 2006- ), Washington co-starred as a woman who longs for a child, but is unable to have one on her own in "Mother and child" (2010), which also featured naomi Watts and annette Bening. from there, she joined an ensemble cast that included Janet Jackson, Whoopi Goldberg and Thandie newton for Tyler Perry's inadequately adapted take on ntozake shange's acclaimed play, "for colored Girls" (2010). following a rather forgettable co-starring turn opposite eddie Murphy in the failed comedy "a Thousand Words" (2010), Washington was the estranged wife of an escaped slave (Jamie foxx) in Quentin Tarantino's highly anticipated neo-spaghetti Western, "django unchained" (2012). Prior to that film's release, Washington scored big as the star of "scandal" (aBc, 2012), where she played crisis manager olivia Pope, a fictionalized version of famed Bush administration aide Judy smith. an activist, Washington was appointed by President Barack obama to the President’s committee on the arts and Humanities. she also is an active member of the V-counsel, an esteemed group of advisors to V-day, the global movement to end violence against women and girls. Washington is currently a brand ambassador for Movado.

THE ECONOMIC ORIGINS OF BLACK MUSIC MONTH

PERSONALS

THE URBAN EXPERIMENT

By: Hillary Crosley of the New York bureau chief at The Root.

The man who helped create it tells us that marketing was always the goal. The rest is gravy.

s

ince 1979, June has been designated as Black Music Month. The annual celebration was the result of a collaboration between songwriter and producer kenneth Gamble, of Gamble and Huff, and broadcasters ed Wright and dyana Williams, who lobbied then-President Jimmy carter for a month, like country Music Month in october, that celebrated the business of african americans in entertainment. fortunately for the trio, they had friends in high places. The root spoke to Gamble about how Black Music Month was born, what the first celebration at the White House was like and whether the annual observance remains relevant. the root: What was the catalyst for beginning Black Music Month in 1979?

was "Black Music is Green," and it dealt with the economics of african-american music. it was very helpful not only to us but also the industry at large.

Kenneth gamble: The Black Music association was a trade association at the time, and it was an educational forum for young producers and writers -- african americans in particular -- where they could discuss the benefits of the music industry. History says that most african americans in the industry were robbed of their songs and their property. The Black Music association spoke to the marketing of black music. The whole theme

Then the Black Music association created Black Music Month, which was another original, because october was country Music Month. What happens when you have a music month? you get additional marketing dollars, and it helps to market and promote the artists. it's still working, because right now we're talking about something that started 34 years ago. tr: your BMa team petitioned for one year to push President carter

to institute Black Music Month. What was your convincing argument? Kg: There was a guy named clarence avant who was pretty close to the democratic politicians like carter. The administration had a country music night at the White House, so i called and asked, "Hey, clarence, can you get us a blackmusic night at the White House?" Thank God he was successful, and it was a beautiful night on the White House lawn. tr: What were some of the songs performed that night back in June 1979? Kg: chuck Berry was there, so he did "lucille," playing his guitar. little richard was there, and evelyn "champagne" king was a young artist then, so she sang her first or second record. lfonso ribeiro has come to the defense of fellow former child star amanda Bynes, insisting the embattled actress needs privacy in light of her apparent personal issues. H o w e v e r, ribeiro, who shot to fame as a youngster on TV sitcoms silver spoons and The fresh Prince of Bel-air, has now spoken out in Bynes´ defense. He tells The Grio, "i think the world has changed and i think that the reality shows believe that the world has a right to your personal life. i think that if we can lose the personal side of celebrities´ lives being so out there in the public, she could actually probably rehabilitate herself with whatever´s going on, if anything. HE SAY; SHE SAY question for the group. I have a friend who is married, whose husband has a friendship with a woman she is not comfortable with. the husband says the relationship is innocent. If his wife expresses her discomfort with that relationship, do you think he should end it? would you end a relationship with someone your significant other is uncomfortable with? what are your thoughts regarding this matter? I will leave my answer on this post as well. she said: He should find out why... she should know why they are so close.... Meet somewhere in the middle. i have found that some women are too jealous, perhaps past relationships. i have found that some men are cheaters and nothing but, perhaps bad parenting. i would like to say he should honor his wife's wish, but she could be over reacting. so i'll say this. if it was my relationship he would have to leave homegirl alone.... he said: in the past i've made this mistake. i refused to end relationships with people which cause nothing but separation in my relationship. i Will noT allow that to happen now. My MosT important relationship is with the one i'm with and love. Her happiness is the thing that is most important to me. i believe we should know the person we are with and if ending a relationship with someone helps the one you're with feel more secure then it should be done. i would expect the same thing if i made the request. he said: if sHe were my friend b4 i met my wife, and we just best of friends no, i would not let her go. but if she is someone i met thru work then i would cut her off because my marriage would mean more 2 me. nothing comes b4 the woman that i am married 2!!!! she said: keenan......im confused on your answer .What if your wife wanted you to end your relationship with your best friend? That you have known for a long time.?? if it were me, i wouldn't my husband would just have to understand that there were people in my life before him and ill respect his friends and as long as im not disrespecting him or receiving any then we good.its Trust! he said: nope, cause that would be like giving up on my family, and if she had a problem with b4 we were married then we wouldn't have walked down that aisle anyways!!!! she could tell my wife more about me than i could. u don't give up family, u add 2 the faMily!!!! she said: in my opinion only, it depends on what type of friendship my husband had with the woman...meaning are they just friends & have been for years or were they lovers then became friends. if the later, i would expect him to let it go!

Jake delhomme, qb, louisiana-lafayette The Bayou native started slow with the saints, but he found a nice niche with the Panthers from 2003-09. delhomme passed for over 19,000 yards and 120 Tds during those seven seasons and led carolina to a super Bowl appearance in 2003. 21. wayne chrebet, wr, hofstra The new york fan favorite was a classic underdog story, and he played his entire career with the Jets. chrebet was especially effective from 1995-2002, when he caught 507 passes and 39 Tds during that eight-year span. 22. barry sims, t, utah The starting left tackle for two conference championship games and a super Bowl in 2002, sims played 12 nfl seasons in the Bay area. Much like o’Hara, Pierce was an underrated leader for the super Bowl Xlii champions. 24. Josh cribbs, wr/Kr/pr, Kent state The college quarterback has been mainly known as a return specialist for the Browns, but he did have 445 yards receiving and 614 yards rushing from 2008-10. cribbs has averaged 25.9 yards on 387 career kickoff returns, with eight of those resulting in touchdowns. 25. cullen Jenkins, dl, central michigan The younger brother of kris Jenkins turned himself into a solid interior defender with the Packers and eagles after some time in nfl europe. Please do not take the reasonable assessment of respect and love for the family out of context. your family should be supportive of your wife just as your wife should be supportive of your family. if there is competition there you are set up for failure right off the bat. When things are truly as they should be none of this should arise. But i have seen some female best friends destroy a marriage jockeying for position. page
