THE
PUBLISHER UPDATE
n the coming weeks, we will launch 411 sports into houston and the time is approaching faster than expected. We have secured an associate Publisher (ed Peterson) who will take our houston edition to a different level. i am so excited and give all the praise to my Father in heaven. he gave me the opportunity and the desire and he has given me the resources to go for it. some have asked me, “Do you like your job”? i answer, “no, i love my career because god has saved me for this and he has prepared me for this moment.” now let’s turn our attention to the cowboys. With the emergence of Dez Bryant, i want to go back in Cowboys’ history and look at some of the bad boys and the coaches who had to deal with them. i’m only reviewing the top five Cowboys who gave coaches the most problems. tom landry had hollywood henderson. henderson and Landry were oil and water at its best. henderson was the first L.t. with all the dressing. here was a Man of god trying to deal with hollywood. thomas defied Landry in every way on and off the field. in thomas’ 4th year, Landry cut him just before the thanksgiving Day game. Jimmy Johnson brought in a headache from the 49ers in charles haley, who once peed in a teammate’s car among other things. haley, who clashed with Johnson during their two seasons together, called Johnson “a coward.” the root of haley's clash with Johnson goes back to a lateseason game at Denver in 1992. Johnson questioned haley's effort in front of the team at halftime, and the fight was on. bill parcells and antonio bryant were not the best of friends either. Parcells reportedly told Bryant during the off season: “i've got one more good fight left in me.
Don't let it be with you.” the immature receiver and Parcells had to be separated during practice once after Bryant threw his no. 88 jersey to the ground in a fit of anger over his lack of repetitions as the third receiver. Parcells flung the jersey back at Bryant only to have it balled up and thrown back in his face. Bryant was then escorted by security off the Valley ranch premises. he didn’t last long in Dallas. parcells had another runin with a receiver he called “the player.” this relationship between Parcells and terrell owens was mayhem from the beginning. owens would call Bill old and crotchety and Parcells would never call owens by his name. this got so crazy that another former Dallas Cowboys, bad boy receiver made this statement “i think it's one of the most disrespectful things you can do. you go to work every day and your boss refuses to call you by your name,”Michael irvin said to a local tV station. now we get to the current situation with Jason garrett and Dez bryant. the problem with this relationship is Bryant’s off-field antics, his run-in with the law, and family matters with his mother. his on-field play leaves much to be desired because he disappears in games. Bryant has had to go in the footsteps of former Cowboys defensive back adam “Pac Man” Jones by getting escorts and having specific rules placed on him by the team. recently, he has started to look like he is getting it all together. “Dez has grown before our eyes,” garrett said. “he has become a consistent player. he has been making a lot of plays for us week in and week out,” owner Jerry Jones said. “not (just) more dedicated, but he's being noticeably dedicated, noticeably committed if you want to compare it to months ago or at least two years ago. it’s showing. it's showing on and off the field for him.”

Jim hines came out of texas southern university to become the “Fastest Man in the World” over a 15-year period. he was the first man to break the 10second record in the 100-meter dash, held the world record for 15 years and won gold medals in the 100-meter dash and the 4x100 relay in the 1968 summer olympics in Mexico City.

eugene “gene” upshaw, born in robstown, texas and a texas a&i (now texas a&M-kingsville) graduate, was one of the most dominant nFL offensive linemen in his era, playing 15 years with the oakland raiders. he helped lead the raiders to wins in super Bowl iX and XV and was a 6-time Pro Bowler. he went on to become executive director of the nFL Players association until his untimely death in 2008. tommie smith, born in Clarksville, texas, won the gold Medal in the 200-meter dash in the 1968 summer olympics in Mexico City, then, with teammate John Carlos performed the Black Power salute on the medal podium, in one of the most symbolic moments during the Civil rights Movement. lori mcneil, a houston native, was a consistent top ten-ranked pro tennis standout who pulled off major grand slam upsets over steffi graf and Chris evert and won 10 Women's tennis association (Wta) singles titles and 32 doubles championships over an 18-year period. chadwick brown starred as an allamerican offensive lineman for east texas state university (now texas a&M-Commerce) from 1966-68 and for the past 20 years has served as an nFL game official, having officiated super Bowls XXXV in tampa, Florida and XLV in arlington, texas. george “Jake” roland (Posthumous) won 400 games as a basketball coach for Dallas’ Lincoln high school and Carter high school, winning several district championships and Coach of the year honors. horatio porter was a five-time all-american sprinter at tCu, winning nCaa championships in the 4x100 relays and southwest Conference titles in the 55-meter and 200-meter dashes. bobby e. moten, sr. was an all-Conference tight end for Bishop College and a four-letter, double all-state high school athlete, becoming only the third player to be drafted from Bishop College, by the atlanta Falcons. “the point to make here is that these athletes and coaches excelled not just due to raw athletic ability, but also because of their intellect, their work ethic, discipline and high values system,” said gordon Jackson, a member of tBshoF's selection and advisory Committees. “that's why we're using the theme, 'Celebrating athletic Brilliance.'”.

HIS-STORY WITH GREGORY MOORE
John Elway, Mitt Romney, Peyton Manning and PaPa John . . . .

’ve got to wonder, out-loud if you will, if Peyton Manning, who reportedly dropped a few grand, around five, in Mitt romney’s pocket towards his failed-bid to occupy the oval office – does the nFL’s unofficial all-american Posterboy support PaPa John’s Ceo Joe schnatter, who recently released a statement, that in essence said the affordable Care act may prompt the pizza chain to raise prices and cut employees’ hours in order to keep them from qualifying for health care. that says it all . . . . Will Peyton Manning, who i deem the league’s best overall “signal Caller” of his era, continue to be apart of PaPa John’s national advertising campaign? a calculated campaign to win the hearts, minds, stomachs and cold cash of pizza eaters from austin to Boston, La to tampa Bay. it seems if Manning continues to break-bread and “do business” with an disconnected, arrogant Wall street aristocrat like Joe schnatter – it can only send a clear, obvious message to at least the 47% of americans Mr. schnatter’s obviously devalues, not-to-mention another 45% or so who aren’t extremely wealthy like romney or Manning – who i can guarantee you never buy a PapPa Johns Pizza pie – and do fit the demographics of everyday americans who might purchase low-rent PaPa Johns. and actually, “doing business” fails to
accurately describe Mannings “relationship” with schnatter . . . Manning in mid november purchased. was rewarded with 21 Papa Johns outlets across Colorado, Manning summed it up with this;”it’s a smart investment now and will be long after i’m done playing football,” Manning said. so maybe the real question here is; does Manning not care if his business endorsements and holdings are with angry, old, White fat-cats who’ve, for all intentional purposes, with their underwriting of the romney campaign . . declared war on the “Left-half” of the nation?
you may not dig this, but dig this . . . current Bronco gM, former super Bowl winning QB and eternal nFL hall of Famer John elway didn’t
care, that’s why he openly, publicly endorsed and raised funds for romney. Ponder this point; perhaps elway figured halfcrazed, fanatical Bronco fans were blind to the front-page headlines and the editorial section of the papers. or might it be his political beliefs were so-strong, he felt compelled to step-out and back romney . . . Maybe elway, like Peyton Manning thinks “the sky is falling” since President obama was “installed’ by folks not qualified to vote. i’m sorry but there’re fans/consumers who might not purchase Bronco tickets, tee- shirts, caps nor underwear precisely because elway and Manning predictably and logically backed a candidate and political movement which is clearly indifferent if not hostile to the issues and concerns of well-over half the nation, and . . . everybody who aint White and to the ‘Far right.’ are Manning and elway indifferent, if not hostile to the issues and concerns of . . . everybody who ain’t White, and to the far-right? is that too-much info to ask of heroes? i’d submit that’s a relevant question to ask of men who’re supposedly role-models we want our sons to grow up to be like, and our little girls to marry . . . and without question as a parent you don’t want to underwrite a celebrity who’s lent his fame n’ fortunes to a group of men who’d rather build prisons then pre-schools, now would you?

HONORING
91 YEAR OLD LIVING LEGEND NAMED WILLIAM “BILL” BLAIR AKA “CRAZY LEGS”
t
A
By: Cedric e. Lyons - Publisher
his has been a long time coming for me. i remember the first time i meet Mr. Blair. i went to his office when they were on Lancaster and he looked at and asked me what was my name. i told him and the next words out of his mouth was “Moonglow”. My grandfather’s name was Lenord James Lyons nickname Moonglow and Mr. Blair knew him as Moonglow. he began telling me how i am so much like him that every once in a while he calls me little moonglow. Mr. Blair is a living legend based off of the work that he has put in over the years. he is a man of creative ability and incite. the things he has started over the years have not been challanged, that been improved upon by the staff of the elite news. his legend status is not with what he started but with his knowledge of Dallas and the people in it. erine Banks is on his speed dial, and my grandfather is still in his mind. at 91 i wish i could have that same statue. Blair was born and raised in Dallas. he
attended B. F. Darrell elementary and graduated from Booker t. Washington high school. after six months at Prairie View a&M university, he enlisted in the military and became the youngest black first sergeant in the u.s. army during World War ii. a talented baseball player, Blair pitched from 1946 to 1951 for the indianapolis Clowns and other negro League baseball teams at a time when Major League Baseball barred players of color. Blair’s baseball career includes pitching a nohitter in the 1947 Denver Post tournament, playing with the late Winfield Welch, Jesse “hoss” Walker and Buster haywood. Blair also toured with olympic track and field legend Jesse owens and the harlem globetrotters. an injury to his pitching arm forced Blair to leave professional baseball. Later, he established the southwest sports news, a newspaper that
specialized in publishing scores from black college games throughout the united states. Blair soon recognized the need for black churches to have a voice in the city of Dallas. as political, educational and economic unrest led to the Civil rights movement and race riots grew, Blair decided that african americans also needed a media outlet to cover issues of importance to them. in 1960, the southwest sports news was renamed the elite news. the newspaper highlighted the black churches, black people making a difference in their community, politics and sports. For several decades, the elite news has been “devoted to nothing but the truth,” according to the newspaper’s motto. in 1986, Blair launched the first Dr. Martin Luther king Jr. Day Parade, which has become a Dallas institution. an advocate for the interdenominational Ministerial alliance, he also founded the religious hall of Fame to honor black ministers. to the Blair family, i thank you for to oppertunity to set at your feet and learn from your father. he has been an inspration to everybody that comes in his life. you have been unselfish in sharing your dad to us and we need to give the Blir family all the praise for that unselfishness. i will continue to be in your corner.

BUSINESS IN THE NEWS
i
n his first television interview since his controversial commentary on the halftime show of n B C ’ s sunday night football coverage, sportscaster Bob Costas stood by his remarks on the murder-suicide committed by kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher. he emphasized that he was not calling for gun control but rather wanted to push for a candid conversation about america’s gun culture. Costas has been under fire, much of it coming from right-wing conservatives such as herman Cain and Mike huckabee, for promoting a political agenda, despite his agreement with nBC that he has the freedom to editorialize on sport-related subjects. Costas told MsnBC’s Lawrence o’Donnell tuesday night that he “only had about 90 seconds–and half of that, or close to half of it, was devoted to another observation”; he said the constricted time-frame may be one reason his comments were open to misinterpretation. “What i was talking about here, and i’m sorry if that wasn’t clear to everyone, was a gun culture. i never mentioned the second amendment, i never used the words gun control. People inferred that. now, do i believe that we need more
BOB COSTAS: WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT AMERICA’S GUN CULTURE
comprehensive and more sensible gun control legislation? yes i do. that doesn’t mean repeal the second amendment. that doesn’t mean a prohibition on someone having a gun to protect their home and their family. it means sensible and more comprehensive gun control legislation. But even if you had that, you would still have the problem of what Jason Whitlock wrote about, and what i agree with. and that is a gun culture in this country. nBC news confirmed details in a kansas City star article outlining the last hours for both Jovan Belcher and long-time girlfriend and mother to their three-month-old daughter, kassandra Perkins. the police report from the kansas City Police Department shows that Belcher legally owned several guns, and police are testing each one, including the gun found with Belcher’s body, along with shell casings and bullets. investigators indicate the couple’s history of financial pressures and personal issues was widely-known, and that the Chiefs were providing counseling for them. still, it wasn’t enough–the couple had a unresolved fight at 1 a.m. the night before. kansas City police found Belcher asleep in his Bentley on armour Boulevard. Police believe Belcher arrived home around 7 a.m. the following morning when another argument ensued. this one prompted the shooting. Belcher’s mother, who had been watching their baby the night before, heard gunfire as she stood in the kitchen. she rushed to the master bedroom where she found Belcher kissing the dying Perkins on the forehead. Belcher got in his car and headed to his other home–arrowhead stadium–where the Chiefs had a 9:30 a.m. team meeting. he stepped out of his Bentley with a gun pointed at his head,

telling Chiefs general Manager scott Pioli, “i did it. i killed her.” Pioli attempted to dissuade Belcher from taking his own life. the linebacker thanked the manager for everything he had done for him. Chiefs head Coach romeo Crennel and linebackers coach gary gibbs rushed to the parking lot and asked him to put the weapon down. the men heard police sirens and Belcher started to retreat with the gun still pointed to his head. “i got to go,” Belcher reportedly told his coaches. “i can’t be here.” and with a single gunshot, Belcher took his own life. Costas said it was not unique for an athlete’s life to be ruined by the availability of guns. “give me one example of an athlete–i know it’s happened in society–but give me one example of a professional athlete who by virtue of his having a gun, took a dangerous situation and turned it around for the better. i can’t think of a single one. But sadly, i can think of dozens where by virtue of having a gun, a professional athlete wound up in a tragic situation.” Costas believes he helped further a muchneeded conversation about america’s gun culture. “the ready, easy availability of guns makes mayhem easier…the easy availability of guns makes this sort of thing just far more likely to occur. if somebody points out that the country has a problem with nutrition and obesity, that doesn’t mean they’re going to ban fast food. But they are making you aware of some of the dangers and hoping to moderate peoples’ behavior. and if nothing else, even if some people disagree with me or misinterpret what i said, if it started a conversation then i think that’s a good thing.” (source MsnBC)

OJ MAYO IS A YEAHO DALLAS MAVERICKS
W
ith the Mavs talent base around Dirk nowitzki rapidly diminishing, they need to do everything in their power to keep their new sg around for the long haul. it's very possible nothing much good will happen for the Mavericks this season. Dirk hasn't started practicing and he can't play until he practices. if the Mavericks are 7 or 8 games below .500 when he gets back, it's pretty likely they'll miss the playoffs. especially as he'll need some time to play himself into shape. still, this could be the year Dallas finally finds a number two scorer to help Dirk out. oJ Mayo has come back to earth a bit, lately. i think it's his ankle which, since he's been doing a lot of damage in isolation and seems to have less and less help each game, is capable of really messing with his game. some people might say it's reversion to the mean and there's no doubt that his shooting percentage from three was bound to come down to earth. But the truth, sad or otherwise, is that the Mavericks have never had a second scorer this gifted in Dirk nowitzki's tenure. sure, since he's tweaked his ankle, he hit 13 or less in three straight games. sure, his inconsistent free throw shooting is an extreme variation from what Mavericks fans are used to. But anyone who saw him in ot against the Warriors knows what a quantity Dallas has stumbled upon. three sub-par games in a row or no, oJ remains both a gifted three-point shooter
December, 2012
and a gifted isolation scorer. there are nights when he is the only Maverick player who seems like he deserves to be in the nBa. Dallas must keep him. if Mayo keeps this up, he may command as much as 10 or 12 million dollars on the open market. sacrifice, rather than making people content with less, has a way of hardening their desire for more. two straight miserable Mavericks years will have Mavs fans eyeing a max player or bust even more so than they do right now. it is true, too, that paying oJ 10 million will complicate the Mavs ability to get a marquee free agent next summer. however, it's not as much as you would think. next year, Dallas has less than 40 million in committed salary. adding 10 million on top of that probably would end the Mavericks quest for a marquee free agent next year, as the salary cap has been roughly 58 million for the last few years. But did you know that they currently have zero dollars in committed salary for 2014? the only contract they had going beyond 2013-2014 was Brendan haywood's. the only commitment they do have is a team option on Jared Cunningham. and the short, sharp truth the Mavs don't want to face is that their swings and misses at big name Fas have been doubly devastating because while paying Dirk and Marion's salary, it's almost impossible to build a good team in the mean time.

they had to get down so low to make a pass at Deron Williams, the end result is what you see here. they can't keep any expendable players, and they can't keep even a mid-first round draft pick. that math should have been added on to the feasibility of making a big play, and it wasn't. instead of signing Derek Fisher, how much might the Mavs quest for a backup Pg right now be helped by having young talent like Corey Brewer, rudy Fernandez or Jordan hamilton? how much might their position be helped if, rather than trying to entice Williams with the money that five or six teams could also have offered, they'd tried to have the non-Dirk talent to make him think it was worth it? hell, even Jason kidd didn't think the Mavericks were worth signing with this year. it is not time for the Mavericks to stop hoping for a savior. at this point in Dirk's career, there's nothing else they can do. But when the price for that attempt, year after year, is these kinds of teams, that's the surest possible way to repel free agents anyway. nor does it look like any of the marquee free agents for next off-season are available, or if they are (i.e. andrew Bynum), the juice might not be worth the squeeze. if Dallas is willing to spend just one year away from the great free agent hunt, they can sign oJ to whatever the market bears, sign Dirk to 10 million for the 2 or 3 years he wants to stick around for his next contract, do whatever seems right with Marion at that point and start 2014 with 20 million in committed salary to two great players and 38 million to fill out the rest of the roster. the Mavericks cannot afford to let another great player go in hopes of a greater prize, while becomes less and less of a desirable destination the more they wait. this is the right move, and the right player, despite his flaws.

alone, it appears the third-year receiver is finally breaking out. Bryant is now on pace for 95 receptions for 1,304 yards and 11 touchdowns—not too far off from my preseason prediction here at Blue star.
take it to the bank. i underestimated Bryant’s targets (and thus receptions); the receiver is on pace for 137 of them, due in large part to the increase in overall passing for the Cowboys. nonetheless, the fact that Bryant is cashing in on his potential seems to be something deeper than things “clicking” for him. sure, Bryant looks to be maturing, but the Cowboys have also utilized the receiver in a much different manner over the second half of the s e a s o n . s p e c i f i c a l l y, Bryant is getting the downfield looks he craves. in the Cowboys’ first three games, Bryant didn’t have a single target over 20 yards. not one. that might seem outrageous for a receiver with Bryant’s ball skills, but it isn’t unusual in Dallas. actually, Bryant ranked just 51st and

Bryant’s targets came at least 20 yards downfield. not surprisingly, Bryant struggled to start the season. since that time, however, there’s been a major shift in Bryant’s utilization. in the Cowboys’ most recent six contests, Bryant’s deep ball rate has skyrocketed to 32.7 percent; yes, that’s well over five times the rate over the first six games. on top of that, the average length of Bryant’s targets has jumped as well. With an average distance of only 10.2 yards in the Cowboys’ initial six games, Bryant’s targets have averaged 14.1 yards—an increase of nearly 40 percent—since Week 8. thus, while Bryant’s certainly grasping the game differently than he did to begin the season, the biggest reason for his recent boom might just be that the Cowboys are finally

represented a flaw in Bryant’s game — recklessness, imprecision and volatility.
these days, a feeling of cautious optimism pervades Cowboys headquarters, and it has nothing to do with the team’s chances of making the playoffs.
“We have to get to a point with him that he can make those plays like he almost made at the end but not make those mistakes,” Jones said later that evening.
rather, it pertains to Dez Bryant, their young receiver. For so long, Bryant had been a source of frustration, a player with immense talent who had failed to maximize his full potential. But as of late, his performance may be the most encouraging development for a club that owns a 6-6 record and a murky outlook.
at the time, Bryant was still waiting to learn if he would be prosecuted for a misdemeanor family violence charge that was pinned to him following a dispute with his mother last summer. But the case was conditionally dismissed last month, three days after Bryant began the most promising stretch of his career.
in the last four games, Bryant has made 29 catches for 475 yards and six touchdowns — numbers that have left others around him buzzing, even hoping these gaudy stats are not part of an isolated sample but indicators of something much greater and more permanent.
Whether Bryant is playing better because he had a personal burden lifted is uncertain. But those around him say his attitude has improved, and
But last sunday, Bryant maintained his poise for an extended period until romo finally threw his way with 2:06 remaining in the second quarter. that first reception would be followed by five more during a night when Bryant racked up 98 receiving yards and two touchdowns while providing more evidence that he is the team’s top wideout. “it’s all about not losing composure and being focused and just doing what’s right,” Bryant said.

his conditioning, immaturity and chaotic life away from the field seemed to be deterring Bryant from realizing sustained greatness. in late october, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who has been in Bryant’s corner all along, expressed annoyance with the receiver’s inability to put it all together.

not too long ago, Bryant struggled when romo didn’t target him. he’d grow irritated and the aggravation would adversely affect his performance. Four times last season, he failed to make a catch in the second half of games.

Witten has watched Bryant closely since the receiver was drafted in the first round in april 2010. Witten immediately recognized that Bryant was a special athlete.
Jones’ comments came after a loss to the new york giants that encapsulated the thrilling and maddening nature of the Dez Bryant experience. in that game, Bryant caught what would have been the gamewinning touchdown pass in the final seconds. But he was ruled out of bounds when his fingertips grazed the end line. Bryant’s near-miss came after he fumbled on a punt return, ran a sloppy route that led to an interception and was baited into a shoving match with giants cornerback Corey Webster. each error

Lately, Bryant has done little wrong. it’s a pattern of success the Cowboys want to see continue as they wait for their blossoming young receiver to reach full bloom.
“Dez has been special,” Cowboys tight end Jason Witten said tuesday. “it’s one thing to have flashes of it, but the way in the consistency he’s played has really separated him and been a big advantage for us.”
he knew Bryant was capable of making plays like the ones he pulled off in the Cowboys’ 38-33 victory over Philadelphia on sunday, when the wideout twice caught short passes from quarterback tony romo and willed his way into the end zone. But before Bryant’s recent surge in production, doubts persisted about whether he could maintain excellence from one game to the next.

Jet or 411 sports? that is a hard choice because I am fans of both in their own way. summer or winter? summer of course, so I can show off the hard work I put in the gym. mountains or beach? beach because there is nothing sexier than sitting in the sun, drinking something relaxing, watching the sun set and having a peace of mind. Do you have any brothers or sisters? I am an only child and I worked hard because failure was not a option in my household. what would you do if you won a million dollars? pay my 10%, invest my money wisely and make sure myself and my family is secure. complete this phrase: "I would be voted most likely... to be the class clown
what is your dream job? owning a successful speech pathology clinic favorite team: new orleans saints (the future super bowl champs)
bikini or one-piece? one piece because I work hard to show off

this body instead of covering it up isn’t that what the guys want to see. worst job ever: working at this telemarketing firm trying to get people to purchase our services. that job was the pits trying to make people buy something when their mind is already made up. how much would you pay to win a date with yourself? (i.e. charity auction) It depends on what the charity is. would you rather cook or clean? clean because cooking takes to much time. who pays on a date? It is an equal split most of the times because I feel can hold my own. what is your hottest sports opinion? I would say that reggie bush needs to be a more down hill runner versus east to west, don’t you think so? biggest mistake: sallie mae loan once while in school lol!! I've never been able to: sew anything my last meal would be: my mother’s soul food dish of everything that puts you sleep afterwards!!!! December, 2012
