k football season is back and I am getting ready for the season and getting into the swing of things. My first order of business is to sign up for 2 or 3 fantasy leagues. once this paper comes out, I will have had my draft and the losing for me begins. So because it’s football season we have to look at the hall of fame inductees. The Class of 2012 -- Willie roaf, Jack Butler, Chris Doleman, Cortez kennedy, Dermontti Dawson and Curtis Martin -made it official before an intimate crowd at Fawcett Stadium. Willie roaf: We were reminded of roaf's nickname in New orleans -- Gilligan's Island -- for his ability to swallow up defensive linemen in a storm ... and make them disappear. roaf was a scary man on the field, but he was all love tonight. Jack Butler: his game highlights are in black and white, but Butler's life has been anything but drab. Consider this: Instead of playing high school football, Butler spent his youth tucked away in a monastery. In the end, this wannabe priest used Sundays to punish receivers as one of the greatest defensive backs in Pittsburgh Steelers history. he thrilled a Steel City-heavy crowd by saying, "I was fortunate enough to play in the great

city of champions." Chris Doleman: At his most

poignant, Doleman told us, "Anything you want in life you can get through sacks -money, life, fame, women." he recalled his father's mantra: If dad signed you up for something, you had to finish it. Doleman obviously listened.

quarterbacks everywhere paid for dearly. Dermontti Dawson: More than a few Steelers fans made the trip to Canton, and Double D did not disappoint. Pittsburgh's longtime center used his time to thank God, his family and those "who ignited my fire" as a child and saw "hidden potential." his high school coach and presenter Steve Parker also told about the first time he saw Dermontti he asked "Where have you been all my life?" Curtis Martin: Martin turned to his family and said, "My God, I don't want to play football." A talk with his pastor turned him around and off he went. Curtis Martin bared his soul, telling of a sparse childhood. he grew up believing he wouldn't live past his 21st birthday. Martin believes God "upheld his end of the bargain," and the New york Jets legend has vowed to uphold his side of the deal. So far, so good.

Cortez kennedy: This former Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle told a classic yarn. When he was a sophomore in So as we look at the hall of high school, kennedy's mom Famers of 2012, we are forced him to quit football amazed. This season, we will because he wasn't hacking it be able to watch future hall of in the classroom. The team Famers, (only one Cowboy, went on to the state DeMarcus Ware) but let’s get championship, but Cortez ready for some football!!! stayed home. his mother did not, sending her son a postcard from the game: Publisher "Wish you were here." When doing top 10’s I try to add sports into the equation. This list is a double hit. I am an advid movie watcher because as my body Chris Arnold would say,”Movie watchin’ is a sport. So without fearther ado here is my top 10 sports movies. As a side note I will always put true stroies over fiction:

Syracuse university, Ben Schwartzwalder (1909-1993). Schwartzwalder recruits Davis with the help of All-American running back, Jim Brown. The civil rights movement is gaining steam; Davis experiences prejudice on campus, in town, and on the field, sometimes from teammates.

10. Any given sunday: Team owner (Carmen Diaz) and head coach (Al Pacino) can't agree on the direction the team should go. have we ever seen this in the sports world before? A football movie is always good.

4. Rebound: he was one of the greatest basketball talents to ever come from the sidewalk courts of harlem, but Earl "The Goat" Manigault's abilities couldn't save him from the brutal realities of life on the streets that kept him reaching the pros. Gritty sports drama, based on a true story, stars Don Cheadle, James Earl Jones, Loretta Devine, Forest Whitaker, and Eriq La Salle, who also directed.

9. the longest Yard: Paul "Wrecking" Crewe was a revered football superstar back in his day, but that time has since faded. But when a messy drunk driving incident lands him in jail, Paul finds he was specifically requested by Warden hazen (James Cromwell), a duplicitous prison official well aware of Paul's athletic skills. Paul has been assigned the task of assembling a team of convicts, to square off in a big football game against the sadistic guards. 8. Caddyshack: riotous comedy set in an elite country club features rodney Dangerfield as a loud and loutish new member, Chevy Chase as the egotistical club pro, Bill Murray as a crazed groundskeeper, and the pesky Mr. Gopher. The plot revolves around a not-so friendly game of golf between Dangerfield, Chase and stuffy judge Ted knight. Co-stars Michael o'keefe. 7. the legend of Bagger Vance: A disillusioned war veteran, Captain rannulph Junah, reluctantly agrees to play a game of golf. he finds the game futile until his caddy, Bagger vance, teaches him the secret of the authentic golf stroke which turns out also to be the secret to mastering any challenge and finding meaning in life. 6. Rocky IV: rocky Balboa, heavyweight champion of the world, is the trainer for Apollo Creed in an exhibition match against Ivan Drago, a "superman" boxer from the Soviet union. When Apollo is killed in the ring by the brutal Drago, Balboa blames himself and promises to avenge his friend's death in the ring. 5. the express: This biopic focuses on the relationship of Ernie Davis (1939-1963), a gifted African-American athlete, and his coach from 1958 to 1962 at August 15-31, 2012

3. We Are marshall: After a 1970 airplane crash claimed the lives of Marshall university's football team and coaching staff, the West virginia college's president (David Strathairn) agrees to give the team's new coach (Matthew McConaughey) a chance to prove that the football program can be salvaged despite the community's shock and grief. Based on a true story, this inspiring drama also stars Matthew Fox, Ian McShane, kate Mara. 2. Remember the titans: In 1971 segragation in southern schools was the norm. For the virginia high school of TC Williams it was time for busing and desegragation. This included the football team. Black and white players would clash during the training camp as the players had to adjust to something they and the south were not accustomed to. It is through the strong bond of the football team together with their dominance of the opposition on the field that the school and the community would unite and make Alexandria, virginia a better place to live. remember The Titans captures the drama, conflict and emotions of the era through the true story of the 1971 TC Williams Titans football team. 1. Ali: Will Smith plays Muhammad Ali in this film that covers the Champ’s rise from the Louisville streets to the rumble in the Jungle. Ali follows the champ's early days as Cassius Clay and his rise in sports and politics, including his controversial refusal to fight in the vietnam War. Ali was a three-time World heavyweight Champion and won a gold medal as a light heavyweight at the 1960 Summer olympics in rome. Will Smith was nominated for the Academy Award as Best Actor for his role as Muhammad Ali. www.411sportsnews.com

No offence to the cowboys but too many questions have to be answered and you can’t do it in a year. I know, look at the Giants, but remember this is the Cowboys, and their history has shown that they have to build up to that. So, with all of that said, we start the review.

Bryant’s legal issues. how will this impact the Cowboys in the locker room and Bryant’s performance on the field? I like Bryant but I am concerned about his off-the-field issues. Can he overcome the issues that are going on in his personal life? Fifth Question: Who will win the battle for the slot rec e i v e r position? Not that this

First question: Can the Cowboys secondary recover from last season’s bad performance? When your team ranks 23rd against the pass there may be a problem. So the Cowboys went cornerback hunting. In comes Carr and Claiborne to the rescue. Claiborne was ranked as the top cornerback before this year’s draft and Carr was near the top of every free agency list that I saw. on paper, the Cowboys look great headed into the 2010 season. But can defensive coordinator rob ryan govern his system according to his new players' skill sets?

remember last season when the Cowboys decided to cut Leonard Davis and Marion Barber? There were rumors that these two players would be jettisoned and when it finally happened, it seemed to that the Cowboys were finally ready to take a step forward from the past. how about 2012? There are a few players on the list that may end up making the free agency report before training camp and the preseason are done.

Kevin Kowalski, C – he'll be battling for time with Phil Costa and Bill Nagy at center, so not really sure how kowalski will last. Well, unless he beats them out for the position. The Cowboys had center issues in 2011 and there will be no need to keep two centers on the roster if Nagy can play backup. mike Jenkins, CB – I like Jenkins and believe the Cowboys should do all they can to keep him. Well, maybe it should be vice versa. At any rate, the Cowboys are refusing to trade him and his training camp and preseason will determine just how far he goes with Dallas. My hope is that he'll be kept because the team needs depth and he's talented enough to start for the other 31 teams.

third Question: Who will play left and right guard for Dallas? The Cowboys signed guards Nate Livings, Mackenzy Bernadeau, harland Gunn and ronald Leary. There may be a lot of unknown names on that list but before long, these guys may be part of your starting guard rotation. Frankly, who in the world will win this battle?

Ronald leary, g – Dallas actually has a couple of guards that may not make it to the regular season. Leary is a rookie and if he flames out in training camp, then no harm no foul. Its just a matter of seeing him on the field in NFL situations. Harland gunn, g – Another rookie who will probably end up on the cutting room floor. Gunn is a rookie out of Miami and will fight for a roster position. he's 324 pounds but only stands at 6'2." how his height and

Fourth Question: Will Dez Bryant make it through training camp? By now, I’m sure everyone is aware of Mr. 6

Players on the bubble

Kevin ogletree, WR – If Dallas truly believed in ogletree, there wouldn't be a contest for this position. once Coale is cleared to play and the team gets a full look at the basket of receiving talent they have, ogletree may not last.

second Question: How will tyron smith work at left tackle? I am really curious to see just how well Mr. Smith will work on the left side of the offensive line. he did a great job on the right side in 2011 and proved himself to be one of the more athletic tackles in the league. he did so well that head coach Jason Garrett decided to move him over to the left to protect quarterback Tony romo’s blindside. But as Doug Free found out, playing left tackle isn’t necessarily a walk in the park. Smith will look good in training camp but seeing him in preseason and the first couple of regular season games will be interesting.

pAge

question is on the tips of everyone’s tongues, but it is an interesting one. kevin ogletree is inconsistent and may not know the entire playbook. outside of him there are a bunch of rookies and players with little experience. My vote, without seeing him actually play in the NFL, is for Danny Coale. he still isn’tcleared to practice because of his broken foot. But from what I understand his work ethic and skill may give him a leg up.

Cover Story position work against large defensive lineman and linebackers will be interesting to watch. Rudy Carpenter, QB – he was claimed off waivers to compete with Stephen McGee for the third quarterback spot. McGee hasn't worked out and would have left the team in a terrible spot if he were to ascend to the back-up spot. Carpenter should push McGee and my honest opinion is that he'll usurp McGee and make him expendable. stephen mcgee, QB – I thought that his last season as a Cowboy would be 2011 because of his inconsistency. Carpenter will push him and if he fails to respond, then he will not last through the preseason. Akwasi owusu-Ansah, s – he seems to get demoted to the practice squad every season and this year may be no different. Dallas has about nine safeties on the roster right now and the vast majority of those men will be cut. owusuAnsah has speed and experience as a kick returner. But his coverage skills leave a lot to be desired. george Bryan, te – George is a rookie out of North Carolina State who stands at 6'5" and weighs 263 pounds. James hanna is my guy and I fully believe he'll eventually ascend to the top tight end spot. Bryan and the other two rookies will fight for a practice squad position and for time to show why they may be worth keeping around. Cole Beasley, WR – Beasley has been making news lately because he said that he'stiring of the comparisons to Patriots Wes Welker. Let's hope that he can make this much noise on the field. A few measurables on Beasley are that he's short for a receiver, at 5'8," and he runs a brisk 4.49 in the 40-yard dash. Think he has a pretty good shot to make the team? I do. Players to watch Dez Bryant, WR - With all of the news focused on him this off-season, it will be interesting to see how he reacts. Will he immerse himself in his playbook or will the off-field distractions lead to his undoing?

Demarco murray, RB - he's recovering from a fractured ankle and seems to be doing well. But that's now the reason we should watch him. he came out of the gate last season and emerged as one the NFC East's best runners. how will his sophomore season go now that teams have had time to study him? Kyle Wilber, lB - Wilber will play the strong side behind Anthony Spencer. If he plays well enough and pushes hard enough, I can see him challenging Spencer for playing time this season. James Hanna, te - he can be inconsistent at times but I believe he should be able to overcome that with talent and hard work. Let's just hope he's not another Martellus Bennett. Brandon Carr, CB - how will he fit into rob ryan's scheme and will his 2012 prove to be just as good as his 2011? Was he only playing for a contract or can Carr become one of the Cowboys best defensive players? morris Claiborne, CB - A rookie that the Cowboys traded up to grab. his wrist should be healed and we'll get our chance to see him play. Talent and skill are one thing; learning the playbook is another. Will it all come together during his first season at corner? tyron smith, t - he's moved to the blindside and will be romo's main protector. he's very athletic and has all of the skills to turn into a great offensive tackle. Will he take a step back in 2012? Dan Bailey, K - Another player in danger of having a sophomore slump. Will his foot work just as well as it did in 2011?

Felix Jones, RB - he's in a contract year and the Cowboys have no incentive to keep him if his play is average. he has to remain healthy and show that he's worth keeping around. mike Jenkins, CB - he's been silent toward the media lately because he wants to be traded. he also wants a new deal and his play on the field will determine his worth for 2013. My hope is that he remains a Cowboy beyond this year. Best Depth Chart Battles Dan Connor vs. Bruce Carter – Connor will more than likely start and Carter will split time with him. unless Carter completely disappoints during training camp, I believe he'll still be given time to grow and mature. Connor is a great stop gap and will be a pretty good mentor for Carter. It will be good to watch because if Carter is hungry enough, he may beat Connor to the punch. Kevin ogletree vs. Danny Coale and etc... ogletree, Coale, Beasley, Dwayne harris and Andre holmes will all compete for the slot position. There are others who may compete but these are the five names that will surface as true competitors. I like Danny Coale, still, and Andre holmes is a big receiver who can use his size to his advantage. Dez Bryant vs. miles Austin – This isn't really a battle. It's more of my thought that Bryant would turn into the team's top receiver. Because of his recent legal troubles, its tough to say if he'll make it to the top spot. Austin has been a disappointment because of his lucrative contract and Bryant has a great opportunity to make it to number one. Austin had a horrible season in 2011 and will look to rectify his play in 2012. My main concern is with Bryant. he has all of the potential to become the best wide receiver in the league but what happens in his personal life may hold him back. I hope I'm wrong. the Cowboys offensive line guards – The battle of the no-names will be interesting to watch because two of the players will end up starting. Again, this is strictly opinion-based on what I've read and not what I've seen. I believe it will end up being Nate Livings and Mackenzy Bernadeau. While I like Bill Nagy and David Arkin, if these two players were truly ready to take the next step, the Cowboys wouldn't have signed every single free agent guard available.

s you watch the value of your property, home or retirement investment savings struggle in the current economy, you may be wondering about ways to protect your family in the event of an unforeseen event. one option you may not have considered is the purchase of a whole life insurance policy. It may not be something you’d automatically turn to, but whole life insurance offers guaranteed death benefit protection in addition to multiple tax advantages and flexibility. owning a whole life policy can be a great financial alternative, not only for the protection of your loved ones but also a financial option for your living needs. Invest in Your loved ones The primary promise of life insurance, of course, is that your loved ones will be protected in the event of your death. And with a whole life policy, your death benefit is

guaranteed,1 whether the payout comes in a matter of years or decades. This is an investment that provides protection in the long-term interests of those you care for most, as well as your own peace of mind. Invest in your Future But, what you may not know is that a whole life insurance policy is much more than protection against the unknown. It also provides you with tax-deferred cash value that accumulates over time. In the event of sudden unforeseen or happily anticipated expenses, it provides a readily available source of funds. And in the long run, it can also supplement your retirement income.2,3 Any kind of financial strategy these days seems fraught with uncertainty, so it’s important to consider carefully what vehicles work best for your own circumstances. Don’t Drink the Kool-Aid

h

PAUL GARRETT 411 SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

ere we are at this time of year again! It is a very exciting time and it is an opportunity for us to get ourselves all worked up and communicate our feelings with great emotion. That’s right; it’s the beginning of football season. So many of us will begin to explaining our desires and hopes for our favorite football team and the reason why they will make the super bowl. We all start off with so much promise and this truth reigns for the Dallas Cowboys. Before we go further, please be careful before drinking the kool-Aide! While the Cowboys oowner is very optimistic this year, as he is at this point every year, and wants to get back to the “Glory hole,” please don’t drink the kool-Aide that Boss hogg Jerry is serving. The Cowboys have made some changes during the off season but again, we won’t know how beneficial these changes were will be until the season gets underway. one thing is for certain, in order for this franchise to get back to its glory days, the climate in the organization will have to ultimately change. owner Jerry Jones has done a great job in keeping this franchise relevant. GM Jerry Jones is consistent in trying to get the best players on the team. however, I believe that President Jerry Jones has failed in maintaining a championship environment. The Cowboys have change head Coaches, assistant coaches, released players, and signed brought in free agents, and have drafted new players, but the inconsistency of this franchise has remained the same in the past 15 years. you simply do not know which Cowboy team will show up on Sunday. For example, this off season we have seen the departure of Terrence Newman and

the arrival of Brandon Carr. right now that appears to be an upgrade, but we won’t actually know until we face the Ny Giants the first game of the season. Not to mention that our secondary is still suspect, even with the draft of number one pick Maurice Claiborn. Looks like a different flavor kool-Aaide, but it is still kool-Aide. The linebackers are still anchored by DeMarcus Ware. Sean Lee will continue to be a bright spot, but will anyone else putget consistent pressure on the quarterback? Did we bring in anyone that will help DeMarcus Ware? Looks like the same koolAide as last year. The defensive line has made upgrades. oh, I’m sorry…can someone please tell me if they added anything? Jay ratliff will start off great, but will be worn down by the 10th game of the season. Not because he is physically tired, but because no one else from the defensive line will be playing with the same passion. Same kool-Aaide. Well, we have brought in new offensive lineman through free agency …and will they really make a difference? They have a new offensive line coach in Bill Callahan. I’m sure this is an upgrade, right? Probably so, but how much different will they make in a year? Will they be able to pick up a blitz late in the season when the playoffs areis on the line? This kkool-Aaide looks familiar to me. our receiving corps is missing a third receiver. No doubt Dez Bryant, Miles Austin and Jason Witten are all playmakers, however, Dez hasn’t played a full season, Miles was hurt last year and Witten is a

year older. Who will fill the void that Laurent robinson has left who was a surprise last year and proved to be very valuable. he proved to be valuable last year. Same kool aide if you ask me. We should be ok at running back with DeMarco Murray and Felix Jones if we can stay healthy. This has been a problem for the past few years. Same kool-Aide. Now finally, the sugar in the this kool-aide is, Tony romo. Even though romo had one of his best seasons last year, 31 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, he consistently makes costly mistakes when the game is on the line. Will this change this year? Will something magically happen that romo doesn’t make these costly mistakes? Well, we don’t know. We have no idea. We don’t have a clue. I’m definitely now staring at this kool-aide with my eyes wide shut.. Finally, I don’t want to get my hopes up again. however, I’m thirsty, it’s hot and it has been awhile since I have had a good glass of kool-aide. I know I shouldn’t drink it, but I do see everyone else drinking their glass. Well, here I go, pour me a glass and lets go Cowboys!

HOW CURT FLOOD 'RUINED' SPORTS By: David steele - special to 411 sports and entertainment

W

AShINGToN -- Wednesday was the 40th anniversary of what seemed like a fairly big, but hardly earthshaking, baseball trade: Curt Flood, Tim McCarver and two others to the Philadelphia Phillies; Dick Allen and two others to the St. Louis Cardinals. Pretty cut-and-dried. until Flood refused to report and then asked the commissioner to make him … a free agent. We all know what happened after that, and if you don’t, check out a series of stories on Fanhouse, including a pair that I wrote. And then check out some of the comments on those stories, then decide whether you agree with them. Flood is, in fact, the Father of Free Agency … and four full decades later (technically, three and a half, because it wasn’t fully granted for baseball players until 1975), it’s still held as gospel by a stunning percentage of fans that free agency “ruined baseball.’’ or, more comprehensively, “ruined sports.’’ you know the arguments; you may have made them, and might be making them at this moment. Players are getting paid millions to play a kids’ game that most of us would play for free. Teachers and firefighters are struggling to survive, yet A-rod and kobe and T.o. make more for each game than any of them will ever be paid in their lifetimes. heck, Joe DiMaggio and Bronko Nagurski never got paid like that, and they were real stars, not like these stiffs today. If some .220-hitting shortstop can make millions, what would Mantle be worth – forget it, he’d own a piece of the team! And loyalty? Forget it, these punks chase the dollars and that’s it. Nobody cares about winning or keeping a team together or staying faithful to the

fans of a city that adores them, the way they did in the old days, when a star would play for the same team his whole career. Agents now come in and drive up salaries and blackmail teams and bleed them dry; they have more power than anybody, and things were way better when the vince Lombardis of the world would just throw them out of his office and trade any player who tried to use one. Then these greedy, jealous bums have the nerve to go on strike, as if they’re not the luckiest people walking the earth to be making that kind of money without having to have real jobs. Meanwhile, we keep getting charged more for tickets and paying $8 for a beer at the ballpark, and $30 to park, and now the games aren’t even on Tv for free anymore, all because of these damn high salaries. Did ya know you used to be able to sit in the bleachers for 50 cents? Blah blah blah freaking blah. Fans this blissfully ignorant and willfully uninformed are like gold to owners, and have been for more than a century. The truth is summed up in something Jim Bouton, the author of the legendary Ball Four, said years ago: players don’t deserve all that money, but owners don’t deserve it more. The idea that sports, leagues, franchises and owners wouldn’t have soaked the public if players didn’t start demanding a fair share of the money they generated is beyond preposterous – it’s a flatout lie. So is the idea that pro sports is in some sort of terrible condition today because players now have a piece of the pie they had been denied for, again, more than 100 years, before Flood finally called

baseball out on it. Meanwhile, the very same people who would never accept the kind of limits on where they could work, for how much and for how long, that athletes did before Flood, except under the most desperate and poverty-stricken conditions, are the ones who complain longest and loudest about players picking where they want to play and how much they’ll accept to do it.

Folks are doing that right now, in fact, being laid off by companies for no other reason than it helps out the board members’ stock value or the CEo’s profit margins – and simultaneously enraged at CC Sabathia getting to go play for the yankees because Cleveland and Milwaukee didn’t want to pay him as much. There is simply no way to watch, say, Tuesday’s Twins-Tigers playoff game, as transcendent a moment as sports on any level has ever produced, and whine about how everything was so much better 50 years ago before free agency. Baseball is better now. Every sport is better now. It’s just as exciting as it ever has been, and everybody’s being treated better in it. And everybody got to see it, as more people have gotten to see more games more often than ever before. you just wonder why fans are so compelled to continually parrot the same arguments made since the 1870s by owners working solely for their own self-interest. Why players getting rich offends them so much more than, for example, Jerry Jones or George Steinbrenner getting rich. Why pure selfishness (you don’t want your favorite player to ever leave town) can be such a dominant motivation for your feelings about the games. Why you would never swear off watching movies because of what Jim Carrey earns per picture, but curse the entire landscape of professional sports because of what Manny ramirez makes. CHECK FINANCING Why, in fact, it means so much to your personal 0% INTREST happiness how much any FOR 90 DAYS player makes, and whether the envy and bitterness cultivated toward them is really worth it. $$)0),+"* Seriously, what’s it all about? Curt Flood liked St. Louis and didn’t want to go to Philadelphia just because August Busch ordered him to. # # " For that, he and every player since have your everlasting disgust? Flood died young, in 1997, but he took sports into the 21st century. It's time for fans to join it there.

GABRIELLE DOUGLAS WINS GOLD IN WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS ALL-AROUND she easily outpoints competition to win. Alexandra Raisman of the u.s. loses out on bronze because of a tiebreaker.

abrielle Douglas, a 16year-old from virginia Beach, took the women's gymnastics allaround lead on her first event, the vault, and never let it go Thursday. Gabrielle "Gabby" Douglas (born December 31, 1995) As a member of the uS Women's Gymnastics team at the 2012 Summer olympics, she won gold medals in both the individual and team all-around competitions. She was also a member of the goldwinning uS team at the 2011 World Championships. Martha karolyi, the National Team Coordinator for uSA Gymnastics, nicknamed Douglas the "Flying Squirrel" for her aerial performance on the uneven bars. Douglas is the daughter of Timothy Douglas and Natalie hawkins. She began training in gymnastics at age six when her older sister, Arielle, convinced their mother to enroll her in gymnastics classes. When she was eight years old, Douglas won an allaround gymnastics award for her level at the 2004 virginia State Championships. At age 14, Douglas moved from her home in virginia Beach, virginia, to

live with a host family in West Des Moines, Iowa, so she could train with Liang Chow, who was the coach of former world and olympic champion Shawn Johnson. Douglas earned her second olympic gold medal and became the first African-American olympics all-around gold medalist by performing with ferocious power, high-flying aerial tricks on the uneven bars, a smartly cautious balance beam display and, finally, a joyfully exuberant tumbling romp on the floor exercise mat. The silver medal went to russia's victoria komova, who wept in disappointment. Another russian, Aliya Mustafina, and American Alexandra raisman, had the same score, 59.566, but Mustafina won the bronze medal after a tiebreaking procedure was used. raisman seemed stunned as she looked at the scoreboard. The official tiebreak procedure is the total of the three best scores. Mustafina had 45.933 and raisman 45.366. raisman, who had been in medal contention at the

halfway point, knocked herself out with a lowscoring balance beam routine on the third rotation or there might not have been a need for a tiebreaker. Douglas took a .326 lead into the final rotation, floor exercise, over komova. her power tumbling almost took her out of bounds once, but Douglas tip-toed her way inbounds. When her score of 15.033 was posted, Douglas leaped into the arms of her coach, Liang Chow. The u.S women’s gymnastics team celebrates it’s first olympic title since 1996, thanks in part to Gabby Douglas. The 16-year-old, and her four teammates, have been branded as the “Fab Five” after they beat russia and romania for the gold in their final event, the floor exercise.

Bronner Brothers celeBrate 65 years of excellence.

F

rom its humble beginnings till now, Bronner Brothers has put the beauty world on the big stage. This weekend was no different. From August 4 – 7, hair spray, clippers, and hair weave was all over the place. People came from miles around to show off the latest and the greatest in hair, nails, and eye lashes. Bronner Brothers is the true essence of a family owned business. Entering into the second generation of owners - these brothers are serious! In 1947, Dr. Nathaniel h. Bronner, Sr. and his brother, Arthur E. Bronner, Sr. (the original Bronner Brothers) with the assistance of their sister, Emma Bronner began teaching cosmetologists at the Butler Street yMCA in Atlanta, Georgia. Subsequently, the first Bronner Bros. Trade Show was born with approximately 300 in attendance. As Bronner Bros. grew, the show moved from the yMCA to the royal Peacock Social Club, and later to the Auburn Avenue Casino. The show attracted many well renowned speakers including Jackie robinson, Dr. Martin Luther king, Jr. and Dr. Benjamin Mays. Mr. Bronner combed the country each year to bring positive, motivating people to the show. over the years, Bronner Bros. continued to gain momentum and moved to the City Auditorium. In 1967, the newly completed hyatt regency hotel and Bronner Bros. signed a ten (10) year contract to hold the annual convention. This would remain the home for the beauty show for the next twenty (20) years. August 15-31, 2012

COVER

As the show grew - energetic, satisfied customers and space demands forced the selection of other sites for the show. With the show being such a phenomenal success, expansion included moves from the Marriott Marquis, hyatt regency, the Atlanta Merchandise Mart and finally to its present venue, the Georgia World Congress Center. In 1996, delegates convened in the magical city of orlando, Florida. In 1993, Bronner Bros. achieved a “new level of success” with the changing of the guard. Bernard Bronner took his seat at the helm of the company as President and CEo. Thus began the second generation of Bronner Bros. Today, Bronner Bros. continues to ascend from its modest beginnings setting for itself new goals, new challenges and new standards of excellence. “Not only will delegates be exposed to dynamics of the world of beauty through hands-on-classes, creative presentations, and a very energetic trade floor, we will strive to meet the everchanging needs of the industry. We move forward with enthusiasm to bring new innovative ideas, international influences and upcoming technology”. one of the new ideas is a beauty and fitness campaign. united healthcare will host the "Stylin' healthier Future" class and hair Fitness Competition featuring celebrity stylist Elgin Charles and united States Surgeon General, Dr. regina Benjamin. The competition underscores both Bronner Bros. and united healthcare's commitment to healthy living and enhancing the well-being of AfricanAmerican communities. There will be interactive displays by CvS introducing the national retailer's newest beauty product line. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) will host an exciting hair competition in

support of hIv/Aids Awareness. Bronner Bros. International hair Show – sixty-five years of trade show experience, bringing the best in trend-setting styles with fabulous hair fashions and extraordinary education. This initiative will be headed by Sherita Cherry, who is challenging her clients to stay healthy. “your hair is beautiful why can’t your body be the same way?” She issued the challenge with a contract her clients signed to promise to stay healthy. This has taken off and is now reaching other cities. WNBA’s Ashley robinson of the Washington Mystic spoke on health and beauty and winning a ring in Seattle. The show opened on Saturday Aug 4 and a Comedy Show at the Georgia World Congress Center. Allen Payne from the house of Payne, rasheeda from Love & hip hop, Pleasure P, oMG Girlz, and Michael Baisden were all in attendance. The Barber Battle held on Sunday night at 9:00 p.m. also at the Georgia World Congress Center gave barbers an opportunity to showcase their talent in a boxing ring fit for a champion! Clairol Professional selected the "Go for Pro" hair Color Competition Grand Prize Winner on Sunday, August 5, 2012 during the Bronner Bros Barber Battle. In its 2nd year, the competition aims to reward upand-coming stylists who show incredible talent and promise. There were also educational classes hosted by the Clairol Professional Style Ambassadors. Partnering with Bronner Bros. continues Clairol Professional's commitment to the salon industry and educating stylists to delight clients with a modern definition of beauty. Ford Motor Company gave convention attendees a chance to win a 2013 Ford Escape. Attendees test drove new Ford vehicles on Sunday, August 5th from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Georgia World Congress Center Green Lot. The first 300 people to take a test drive received a free ticket to the Bronner Bros. vIP Lounge. yelena Leuchanka of the Atlanta Dream showed up to see what the hype was all about. She spoke about her hunger to win the big crown since they’ve been to the finals two times, but no cigar. With so many classes, so many vendors and so many visitors, Atlanta was extremely proud to have the Bronner Brothers as part of their fair city. An era which promises to bring vast changes to our country and to our world—

HE SAY/ SHE SAY Question: Can Infidelity be forgiven and under what circumstances would you do your best to forgive and move forward? this is posed to both single and married folks. How much does one's faith play a part in how you respond in this situation? she says: When I was single, if you cheated on me, it was so long, see you, bye bye... however, being married is different. Biblically, God gives us permission to divorce in the case of infidelity. however, that is a ChoICE, not the end all be all. I believe in repentance and forgiveness and trying to put the pieces back together to fulfill the vow/covenant that was made before God to stay together through the good, the bad, and the ugly. But if there is no repentance and commitment to not commit the offense again, there would be still be forgiveness, but the option to divorce would go into effect... He says: Not in my books it can’t. There would never be complete trust again. she says: It's a deal breaker for many. however, it can be forgiven by some. In that situation, moving forward often makes the relationship stronger in many areas but much weaker in others. Forgiven, yes. Forgotten, never! The trust level is rarely ever the same and a new level of insecurity remains on both sides. He says: There has to be some situations that would allow you to forgive--- Let's say your mate has been the perfect person for you for many, many years and had one moment of weakness-- Do you throw away years of wonderful for one night of stupid..?? He says: No, but it still wouldn’t be the same, would it? you would always have that underlying thought of could it happen again, true ? He says: I would forgive my wife if she cheated, but only if it was just sex. If she told me she had "FEELLINGS" for the guy I would probably move on with my life.... He says: Are we as men especially MEN --so concerned with who had her body that we could not get past that.. I agree I could stand a person touching her body but could never stand someone else having touched her heart or crept into her mind -she says: She has a valid point often excused but to me you can't forgive or forget intention. how often is it considered before its pursued? Men ..most lack morals have little respect for commitment and walk with double standards. Their moments of weakness seem to be reoccurring illnesses. He says: I just couldn’t live with myself if I did something like that to my wife, it would be like I have broken a sacred trust to her and my savior. God binds us together as one yoke Break that yoke and you have major problems! she says: I do know one thing, until you're faced with the decision, all you have is an opinion of what you assume you'd do. Quite often, the opinions and assumptions made prior to coming face to face with a situation, change drastically once you're staring it in the pAge

she says: It’s a done deal for me because now you are lying and cheating putting me jeopardy and then you think I’m sorry helps? Take your sorry ass somewhere and leave me the hell alone! she says: I forgave my ex husband when he cheated on me. First I left coz I was so angry and hurt (I was two months pregnant with our 1st child) then I took him back because I wanted our son to grow up with his dad. I forgave and I forgot. 10 years later he did it again. I left for good that time. that was 13 years ago. And I forgave that too eventually. Now we can be cordial and civil with each other because we have a child together. I never took him back. I simply moved on. she says: What if you knew the individual lifestyle, before you become involved, do u think he/she will change suddenly for you? Even if they cool out for a minute, they will go back to their old ways sooner or later. once a cheater always will no matter what. Been there. They will try but that’s about it. He says: To the guys, I would think that if your woman cheated she already had feelings for this person. To the Lady above, I take offense to the statement that most men lack morals when you don't know most men and furthermore what does that say about your moral fortitude if you hang around people/men in general that have moral issues since you know most men?? IJS she says: I think infidelity can be forgiven and you can move on from that, what most couples don't understand is that just because you say you're sorry means nothing!! you must put into actions your sorry and earn his/her trust again. That doesn't mean that we won't have doubts at times but we both have to be willing to put in work. No relationship is perfect as is no person. BuT DoN'T BE No FooL TWICE!!! she says: For all you strong men, please don’t take offense, but most times you are assess and women don’t get that if we stop dogging men out then maybe infidelity might be on the decline. He says: here is the deal-women cheat because of neglect from their significant other be it emotional or physical in nature. With men- It stems from esteem and power. If you look real close men that have had limited experience with women who achieve a certain amount of power......you get the picture. And Michael Baisden's book " how and Why Men Cheat"......is waaay off base she says: It’s an ego thing. Forgiven, but there is always going to be doubt. once, not bad but twice and more? Forget it. It’s on; bye bye boo. See ya! A man do what you allow him to do to you and it works both ways. Some women know that their husband or significant other is messing around and they just pretend it’s ok. she says: I say just cut off his appendage and call it a day. Next...... Lol pAge

Top 10 One-Hit Wonders of Rap

Top Ten Lists Featuring African Americans debut album of the same name. The track peaked at #13 on the u.S. Billboard hot 100 chart. The song was nominated for Best rap Solo Performance at the 1996 Grammy Awards, but lost to Coolio for his song “Gangsta’s Paradise.”

This top ten list features the top 10 one-hit wonders of rap & hip-hop. A one-hit wonder is a recording artist who has a big hit, but fails to achieve another successful recording, or is just never heard from again. The criteria for making this list was based on (a), the artist being a onewonder (b), record sales, (c), Grammy Award recognition, and (d), how well the artist did on the r&B and pop charts. In other words, the bigger the hit, the higher the artist ranked. one final note, I’ve included youtube videos of the top 10 as an aid to help you recall & enjoy the hits of the artists. But I must warn you that even though the videos of artists 9 & 10 are the clean versions, their videos still contain suggestive content, especially #9. So, having said that, it’s time to let the top 10 debate begin.

J. J. Fad was a rap group from rialto, California about 45 minutes east of Los Angeles, California. The group’s only Top 40 hit was 1988’s “Supersonic,” which made J.J. Fad the first female rap group to earn a Grammy nomination. 7. Candyman – “Knocking Boots”

It spent seven weeks at number two on the Billboard hot 100. The single is certified 4× Platinum in the uS for sales of over 4,000,000 copies and, despite never

est Coast legend Ice Cube is hard at work on his upcoming album Everything’s Corrupt, which the rapper/director said was “65 percent” finished. The rap star hit the stage at Irving Plaza in New york and after the show, Ice Cube conducted an

interview with Duck Down visuals for red Bull u.S.A. During the interview, Ice Cube divulged some information regarding Everything’s Corrupt. “It’ll be out next year, you know, its hardcore hip-hop. It’s street knowledge, it’s

talking about what’s going on in the hood, but it’s talking about what’s going on in the political arena,” Ice Cube revealed. “It’s what I always try to give. Much more than just rhyming.” In related news, Ice Cube discussed the progress of “Last Friday,” which is in preproduction. Although Ice Cube didn’t discuss Chris Tucker’s possible involvement, he confirmed that the movie is in the works. Ice Cube is meeting with New Line Cinema, the company that bankrolled the original “Friday” franchise of movies that have grossed over $150 million dollars since their theatrical releases. “The script is almost finished, I got a meeting with New Line on Monday or Tuesday, to talk about the next steps,” Ice Cube said. “you gotta get that script tight before you can take the next step.” For a while, there have been rumors about 42-year-old rapper/writer/producer, Ice Cube, putting his 1995 “Friday” movie series to rest with a final film. In an interview with MTv, Ice Cube (real name o’Shea Jackson) finally confirmed the rumor. he announced that he is currently finishing up the writing for the final movie, which is titled “Last Friday.” he also confessed that he had trouble getting Chris Tucker to be in the new movie (Tucker played Smokey in the previous films).

Apparently Tucker has gotten all holy on us and feels that playing a pot-smoker is against his religion. But Ice Cube seems to have worked his magic and gotten Tucker to agree to act in this last installment of the series. of the movie, Ice Cube said, “I’m still writing [the screenplay]. I’m still in the process, I’m deep into it… [The title is] Last Friday. I want [Chris Tucker] to be in it. he’s given us every indication that he’s gonna be in it. until he shows up on set, you never know. That’s really how it goes. I’m almost finished with the script, so as soon as we can finish the script, fast motion on it.” As if “Last Friday” isn’t enough, Ice also mentioned the biopic and the album that he’s working on. The biopic is to be about N.W.A, the hip hop rap group from Compton that was most popular in the late 80s and early 90s. Ice Cube was a part of the group, along with Eazy E, Dr. Dre, and a few other young rappers. of this film, Ice Cube said, “The script is getting tighter and tighter, and once the script is tight as sweaty butt cheeks, we’ll put it out, and we’ll start working on it.” The album that Ice Cube is working on will be his first since 2010. The project is not yet officially titled, but the rapper is leaning towards naming it “Everything’s Corrupt.” he told MTv that we can expect, “hardcore, West Coast hiphop” from the album.

Dacia Y. Kings - God Given Talent D2K

Featuring African Americans

acia grew up in Allen, Texas, where she obtained her primary and intermediate school education. In the fall 2007, Dacia attended Booker T. Washington high School for the visual and Performing Arts in Dallas, Texas, where she joined her brother James, a fellow musician (drummer). Early in life, many recognized Dacia’s gift to sing. Throughout her preteen years, Dacia utilized her gift by singing praises to God in the children and youth music ministries at her church. She has also taken lessons in violin and piano to add to her talents. Though extremely fond of Gospel music, Dacia developed a strong fondness of Jazz, particularly the vocal styles of Sarah vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, kurt Elling and several others. Throughout high school, she participated in the varsity Classical Choir, Jazz Singers, Meister Singers, Musical Theater, the Black Academy of Arts and Letters, Pop Ensemble and the Gospel Trio. Dacia’s wide range of musical involvement

afforded her the opportunity to sing for Diana ross, Queen Latifah, and many others. She also has participated in the NAACP ACT-So Program. In the fall 2010, Dacia reached a pinnacle in her musical experiences when world-renowned composer and conductor Marvin hamlisch selected her to perform with the Dallas Symphony orchestra at the Myerson Symphony hall, in his tribute to the music of George and Ira Gershwin. her father, James kings, Sr., accompanied her as she auditioned with “Someone to Watch over Me,” totally unaware of Mr. hamlisch’s celebrity status or the upcoming tribute. During the show, Dacia dedicated the performance of the song to the memory of her best friend, her brother James Dante kings, who passed away on 28 March in 2008. Dacia is currently enrolled in the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music university located in Greenwich village area of New york City, New york. She is majoring in music and later plans to pursue a medical curriculum.

Dacia gives credit first to God for bestowing a voice upon her for music, then to both of her parents for their continued support of her dreams and goals. Dacia is also thankful to her high school choir instructor, Gloria Stephens, and her brother’s former percussion instructor, Bart Marantz, for their dedicated support, understanding and mentorship. She especially thanks Ms. Stephens and Mr. Marantz for their encouragement to finish the high school curriculum in the now three-year wake of her tragedy. Dacia and her parents are thankful to those who believe in her and give her the chance to “shine” through her God-given talent.
