A great deal has happened in this industry since the last CEDIA Expo ... but then again, it always does. We are after all, in the business of innovation! The iPad™ has hit the streets with the hype and grandeur of an A-Grade celebrity on tour. There are those who see it as a threat to the very fabric of the way we do things. I don’t …but then again I’m more the glass is half-full sort of person. I see it as possibly the greatest sales tool we’ve ever had. Let’s face it, if you gave the average person a web tablet a couple of years ago, they would have picked it up, pressed the screen, then said “wow … this is flash … what do I do with it?” Now, because of the uptake of the iPhone, first-time users are rotating, pinching, down loading apps, in fact they can’t put it down. The TV advertisement says it all, “you already know how to use it”. Let’s think about it … if they know how to use an iPad, then it makes our job a whole lot easier. The role of the custom installer is to take a whole lot of products and make them work together simply and in harmony. You can tell your clients “we can give you an app to control your whole home!” And they’ll get it … first time! That means no more trying to explain an unperceivable value proposition to the uneducated.

The other big change is on the horizon … mandatory energy efficiency. We can see it looming and over the last year, a whole lot more has happened within groups such as the Residential Energy Management Forum to ensure that governments create legislation based on logical and achievable outcomes, rather than vote-winning, commercially driven objectives. We’ll see a lot more in the headlines in the coming months about renewable energy, local storage, smart grids, and policy regarding hot water, pool pumps and air conditioners. Believe it or not, electric vehicles will also become part of the home energy management solution, as they communicate with intelligent systems to provide efficient charging schedules and deliver extra power storage to the home.
f Venue
The exciting news is that these developments will drive up the demand for installers with skills spanning a variety of technologies. Sound like someone you know? YOU! This year we are very pleased to hold CEDIA Expo in Melbourne and to be co-exhibiting with DesignBUILD. We are also very excited at the prospect of exposing our technology and our members to new markets and a potential new audience. I hope you enjoy CEDIA Expo10!

Brand Navigator 2010 “We define a brand as a trademark, which to consumers represents a particular and appealing set of values and attributes. It’s much more than a product. Products are made in a factory. A product becomes a brand only when it stands for a host of tangible, intangible and psychological factors. A key point to remember is that brands are not created by the manufacturer. They exist only in the eye of the beholder, the customer.” —Charles Brymer, CEO of Interbrand Schecter

CEDIA EXPO GUIDE 2010 jjj
Courses marked as Core Courses encompass the essential knowledge necessary in order to take CEDIA Certification. The courses relevant to each certification level are described in the individual certification curriculum. These courses make up the knowledge base that CEDIA considers essential for an individual working within the residential custom integration market. 100 Level Courses: Courses marked as 100 level introduce concepts and discussions where there is no prior knowledge required about the subject being taught. These courses are not necessarily ‘easy’ but discuss a subject from first principles. They are knowledge based and designed to teach fundamentals necessary to perform as a technician or designer. 200 Level Courses: Courses marked as 200 level discuss subjects to a more advanced level. They do not teach basic principles and are designed to build upon existing knowledge. 300 Level Courses: Courses marked as 300 level introduce advanced design concepts. They require that participants already have a good level of knowledge underpinning the subject being taught. These courses are not suitable as introductions to a subject area and are mostly targeted towards design. 400 Level Courses: Courses marked as 400 are advanced courses, these are targeted at experienced candidates. Courses at this level teach the syntheses of existing and new knowledge that enable candidates to master a subject area. Seminar Course Seminar courses are education courses outside the CEDIA Education curriculum. These courses often allow the instructor to relate personal experiences, through ideas and options with students. CEDIA Education is not responsible for the content or its delivery in the seminar offerings; the instructors hold that responsibility.
2010 | A Guide to Expo Education
For Whom are The Courses Intended
CERTIFICATION
All courses offered at the CEDIA Expo 2010 have been identified as being specific to certain professions. A number of seminars are relevant to different professions and have been highlighted accordingly in the education guide to enable you to identify which training is most relevant to you and your business.
For 2010, CEDIA is announcing a new structure for our EST (Installer) certifications. We have done this to allow us to introduce a new basic certificate, as well as to bridge the gap to the highest level of EST certification. CEDIA Certification establishes clear, objective standards for your knowledge of residential electronic systems design and installation. It gives prospective customers confidence in your abilities and provides you with a competitive advantage.
EST (Electronic Systems Technician) Aimed at individuals involved with installing cables and components for extra low-voltage electronics in a residential environment. ESD (Electronic Systems Designer) Aimed at individuals involved with designing extra low-voltage integrated systems in a residential environment.
At Expo this year, we are offering the NEW Electronic Systems Technician 2 (formally called Installer Level 1), Electronic Systems Technician 3 (formally called Installer Level 2) and the Designer Level 1 Certification exams.
CEU Points
ESPM (Electronic Systems Project Manager) Aimed at individuals involved with managing projects containing extra low-voltage integrated systems in a residential environment.
All CEDIA courses at this year’s Expo have a CEU allocation attached to them. This is to help certified individuals meet the requirement of gaining 30 CEU points in the 3 year period following gaining their certified status.
ESCR (Electronic Systems Customer Relations) Aimed at individuals involved with selling extra lowvoltage systems and offering ongoing support to these systems in a residential environment.
Please note that CEU points are only valid once certification has been gained - Points do not count prior to taking the certification exam. CEU points may also be gained from certain manufacturer’s product training courses. Please contact the individual manufacturer or distributor for details on this scheme.
ESB (Electronic Systems Business) Aimed at business owners and financial managers of residential custom installation companies.
Also available at CEDIA Expo will be dedicated manufacturer training. These courses will often cover technical issues in more depth and some include hands-on training (a number of these training courses are currently undergoing CEU approval and will be allocated relevant CEU points).

Peter Waugh Enlightened Design Studio Starting in the retail sector, I was schooled by some of the best and involved with the finest products available. From the retail floor I moved into custom installation. Single room to multi room systems, surround sound to full home cinema, there has been a lot to learn. With over 25 years experience it was time to start my own company. Enlightened Design Studio takes an holistic approach to custom installation incorporating interiors, lighting and audio visual. Being involved with education in CEDIA and becoming a CCI has been a challenging and very rewarding part of my career to date and I look forward to carrying on and developing my ability into the future...
