A sanctuary of innovation and freedom emerges in Newcastle, NSW, where Custom Integration and Electrical, in collaboration with Derive Architecture & Design and Harrison Building and Carpentry, have transformed a residence into a model of accessible living at No Coal Street. This project redefines the interplay between architecture and technology, demonstrating that a home can significantly empower its residents.

The transformation is centred around Stewart, a resident living with progressive Multiple Sclerosis. His daily challenges and restrictions formed the foundation for his forever home. Previously constrained by his physical environment, Stewart envisaged a residence where technology would restore his autonomy. The resulting home allows him to control lights, pedestrian gate, curtains, and even the lift with a simple touch on his smartphone, revolutionising his interaction with his living space.
The design of No Coal Street carefully accommodates both communal and private areas. The ground floor is dedicated to Stewart, featuring accessible living, dining, and kitchen areas that integrate seamlessly into the outdoor garden spaces that are vital to their lifestyle. Upstairs, are a retreat for his wife, Lesley, and a versatile carer/guest flat that offer privacy yet remain easily accessible. The home not only supports their needs but also showcases their extensive art collection, with technologies installed to highlight rather than overshadow their array of paintings, sculptures, and ceramics. Technology is subtly woven into the fabric of the home, ensuring it enhances rather than intrudes.
The exterior of No Coal Street reflects the industrial heritage of Newcastle, with the design integrating modern accessibility features. The open-plan living and kitchen area is a blend of functionality and style, designed to accommodate both daily activities and social gatherings.
The motorised windows and doors ensure smooth connectivity between indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing accessibility and ventilation.
This integration extends to the structure itself, which reflects the historical essence of its industrial-commercial neighbourhood with extensive use of Corten steel. While material links past and present, it also introduces unique challenges for maintaining robust Wi-Fi and Zigbee networks, which have had to be overcome from a technology perspective.
The home’s smart systems enable Stewart to move freely around his home. Motorised doors and windows, a bespoke lift interface, and sophisticated control systems allow him to navigate his residence independently. These systems are intricately tied to both the functional and emotional aspects of the home, enhancing daily life through programmed lighting scenes that illuminate their art and create ambiance throughout the space.
The client can also create individual access codes for carers, guests, or maintenance staff tailored to their access requirements, triggering automated actions including from turning on lights, calling the lift, disarming the alarm system and enabling access to the house
Beyond functionality, the technology serves as a lifeline. Security systems, surveillance, and fire detection are all integrated into a central network that Lesley can monitor from any location, ensuring safety and providing peace of mind. The adaptive audio-visual system caters to Stewart’s background in film and television, offering not just entertainment but an immersive experience tailored to his preference.
This project was a collaborative endeavour, shaped by extensive consultations with Stewart, Lesley, his carers, and occupational therapists. Custom Integration and Electrical tailored every technological element to enhance not just physical access but also the overall quality of life, ensuring that each feature was robust, scalable, and responsive to their evolving needs.
No Coal Street transforms the conventional understanding of a residence into an exemplar of smart, accessible living environments. Through its innovative design and commitment to enhancing human lives, the project redefines residential architecture, integrating it with cutting-edge technology to craft a living space that not only accommodates but anticipates the needs of its inhabitants. The home is a showcase of how thoughtful design and technology can coalesce to create not just a dwelling, but a dynamic environment that supports and enriches the lives of those within.

AURORA TERRACE
Aurora Terrace emerged as a canvas of immense potential when the clients first discovered the four-storey townhouse in Victoria, Australia. Having seen their children grow up and move on, the couple was driven to reshape their living environment to suit their new phase of life. Their vision was clear: to craft a modern home that seamlessly blended sophisticated design with the latest in smart home technology.
Their ambition, however, was met with considerable challenges from the start. The couple had grand plans for their new abode, including a plunge pool, high-end kitchen upgrades, and an advanced lift system. Most critical to their dream, though, was the integration of smart technologies that would allow every system in the home — from lighting and climate control to entertainment — to be managed through a single, intuitive interface. Despite their clear vision, this goal initially encountered scepticism and resistance from both the builder and the developer.
The initial thrill of crafting their dream home soon shifted to frustration as these professionals hesitated to embrace the couple’s innovative proposals. Having battled with fragmented and unreliable smart technologies in their previous home, the clients were more determined than ever to achieve a unified, user-friendly smart home environment. Their needs were explicit: while the wife was well-versed in
technology, the husband preferred simplicity and ease of use, desiring a system that would not intimidate but instead enhance his daily life.
It was under these complex dynamics that Wired By MJD stepped in to realise their ambitious project. Despite facing ongoing resistance and the pressures of rising construction costs and market fluctuations, Wired By MJD committed to transforming the couple’s vision into a living reality.
The clients’ requirement for a discreet yet effective security system was paramount, given their home’s proximity to a public park with numerous access points. They sought not only to protect their property but to do so in a way that would allow them peace of mind, particularly during their regular travels.
Wired By MJD crafted a solution that was a perfect amalgamation of luxury, convenience, and cutting-edge technology. They ensured that the technology within the home was not only advanced but also accessible, allowing the self-described ‘dinosaur’ of technology to manage his environment with confidence. This integration created a user experience that was seamless and straightforward, removing the complexity and irritation of dealing with disparate systems and controls.

In the realm of entertainment, the couple’s desire to impress and entertain their guests was met with specially tailored solutions. Customisable KNX switches enabled them to effortlessly set the scene for gatherings, managing everything from garden lighting to indoor ambiance with ease. Furthermore, with multiple AV zones installed across the property, the couple could ensure entertainment consistency throughout their home, allowing for sports and media to be enjoyed in any room.
Addressing energy efficiency was also vital for the couple, who were conscious of the rising costs of living. Wired By MJD implemented smart schedules and a vacation mode within the building management system, ensuring that energy consumption was optimised and that no resources were wasted when the property was unoccupied. This thoughtful approach not only fulfilled the clients’ needs but also aligned with broader environmental sustainability goals.
Navigating through the complexities of modern building requirements and the couple’s specific needs was not straightforward. Wired By MJD had to adjust their usual methods to accommodate the builder’s and developer’s constraints, opting for retrofit-style installations even in this new build. However, through persistent negotiation and innovative problem-solving, they managed to keep the project within budget and exceed the clients’ expectations.

Bayside Luxury, a sprawling estate in Melbourne’s Bayside area, is not just a home; it is a manifestation of opulence, seamlessly blending architecture and advanced technology to create a sanctuary for its inhabitants. This extraordinary project, undertaken by Zelo Group, epitomises luxury resort-style living, o ering an experience that transcends the mundane. With design contributions from Chris Clout Design and Amiconi Architects, and interiors crafted by Black Milk Interiors, the residence illustrates the synergy of aesthetics and smart home technology.
Imagine walking through the grand entrance of this threelevel home, where each curve is accentuated by over a kilometre of LED strip lighting, including red-greenblue digital multiplex (RGB DMX). The house, which arcs gracefully around a central pool and entertaining area, offers breathtaking views from every room. It’s a place where family and friends gather, where every amenity imaginable is at your fingertips—six bedrooms, a home theatre, a bar, a golf simulator, a gym, a massage room, a pool, a rooftop spa, and even tennis and bocce courts.
The client’s vision was clear: a secure family home that doubled as an entertainment hub. Zelo Group, known for their meticulous approach, was tasked with bringing this vision to life. The project required them to manage myriad technical and architectural challenges, particularly the extensive curves and concrete structures. This was a large-scale endeavour, involving not just the installation

of electrical systems but also the design, supply, and commissioning of home automation systems, including Philips Dynalite.
Security and connectivity were paramount. The house is equipped with a cloud-based closed-circuit television (CCTV) system and comprehensive security and access control, ensuring peace of mind. The client also wanted seamless Wi-Fi coverage without the hassle of multiple apps. With Control4’s integration with Inception and Philips Dynalite, managing the home’s myriad functions from a single smartphone became a reality. This control system ensures that everything — from lighting to entertainment systems — operates flawlessly at the touch of a button.
One of the significant challenges was the project’s scale and complexity, essentially breaking down into micro-projects within the main build. Zelo Group appointed two project managers, Alex and Josh, to oversee the electrical and automation systems respectively. The meticulous planning and execution involved detailed joinery drawings and constant reference to elevations, ensuring that every element was precisely implemented.
The lighting installation was a particular highlight, with RGB LED strips providing unparalleled control over colour combinations, enhancing the home’s architectural features. The home theatre was another standout, featuring a THXcertified projection screen and a high-end Sony projector, ensuring a cinematic experience of the highest calibre.
Despite the hurdles, including weather-related delays and COVID-19 restrictions limiting on-site personnel, the technical intricacies involved meant pre-commissioning stages were crucial, ensuring all systems interacted flawlessly before the final handover. The client’s expectations were high, but Zelo Group’s dedication to quality and detail ensured a smooth transition and operation.
Collaborations with partners like Aqualux, Lightmoves for Philips, Dynalite, Snap One, and Lovelight Blinds were integral to the project’s success. These partnerships ensured that every finish was thoughtfully considered and executed to blend seamlessly with the home’s architecture.

FULL FORCE
A masterpiece of home cinema design, the ‘Full Force’ project in Sydney redefines the boundaries of private entertainment spaces. Orchestrated by the integrator Denote, this venture is a tribute to the owner’s passion and the meticulous skill of a highly capable ensemble. Collaborating with the astute architectural firm Smith & Tzannes and the adept interior designer Brendon Wong Design, the project transforms a typical room into an exceptional high-performance cinematic realm.
From the outset, the client, affectionately known as ‘The Doctor’, displayed an intense enthusiasm for his vision: a home screening room that could rival those in the residences of Hollywood elites. He embarked on the project armed with extensive research and a presence in numerous home cinema and audio forums. His preference for high-end brands such as Barco and Trinnov signalled his commitment to an extraordinary entertainment experience. The term ‘reference’ was frequently mentioned, highlighting his pursuit of the ultimate audiovisual fidelity, with cost being a secondary consideration.
Navigating through spatial constraints was a core challenge for the integration company, Denote. The cinema’s compact layout, approximately 5m by 8m by 2.9m, initially seemed to limit seating arrangements and acoustic treatments. Complications such as large windows at the back and a master bedroom located directly above added layers of complexity in achieving optimal acoustics without disturbing the peace upstairs. The necessity to reconfigure a door leading to a
pool plant room further underscored the need for meticulous planning.
In response, Denote introduced a collaboration with Officina Acustica to deliver a world-class acoustic environment. This marked the debut of Australia’s first Officina Acustica-enhanced room, incorporating a full acoustic package that integrated seamlessly with the intended interior design. Handmade in Italy, the acoustic panels enveloping the walls and ceiling were precision-engineered to ensure flawless sound management. They harmonised absorptive, diffusive, and reflective acoustic treatments behind an elegantly tailored fabric, adjustable for varying sound absorption needs.
The construction of an isolation ceiling was a technical marvel. Employing an array of 110 Akustik + Sylomer mounts, the ceiling’s structure included multiple layers of marine plywood, fibreboard, and acoustic membranes, all designed to mitigate sound transmission. This arrangement created an effective barrier that absorbed the vibrant soundscapes produced within, without leaking to the residential space above.

The dynamic ceiling design, combined with tailored lighting and luxurious seating, creates a visually striking and comfortable environment for enjoying films, embodying the client’s vision of a top-tier home cinema.

Installing 145 meticulously measured acoustic panels presented a unique challenge. Each panel had to align perfectly, requiring precise placement to achieve a coherent and functional aesthetic. The colour scheme also played a critical role: black panels at the front to enhance screen contrast and lighter shades towards the back to give an illusion of depth, alluding to the cinematic classic 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Adjustments were necessary when the RP22 Immersive Audio Design Recommended Practice was introduced mid-project, leading to a refinement in speaker placement and optimising the acoustic environment to ensure it complied with this new global technical specification. The strategic focus on the front seats for primary calibration underscored the personalised approach to this bespoke installation.
The collaborative journey with The Doctor made the project highly personalised and fulfilling. His involvement and feedback were integral, turning his dream into a reality that surpassed his grandest visions. Reflecting on the project, he remarked, “I cannot imagine any way this cinema could be better; it is far better than I ever imagined it could be.”
Full Force exemplifies the fusion of state-ofthe-art technology and sophisticated design, celebrating the collaborative spirit between Denote, Smith & Tzannes, Brendon Wong Design, and technological partners like Officina Acustica and Meridian Audio speakers. This project has successfully merged bespoke aesthetics with cutting-edge audio-visual technology to create a space where every film screening is transformed into an immersive, cinematic event.

HOME THEATRE – LUXURY HOME
In the landscape of Auckland, New Zealand, an extraordinary convergence of technology and design has emerged, captivating the senses and elevating the home cinema experience to unprecedented levels. This space is not just for watching films but an immersive sanctuary where sight and sound harmoniously intertwine, creating an unparalleled sensory journey. The mastermind behind this marvel is Liquid Automation, a name synonymous with innovation and excellence in the realm of home automation. Their creation is a vivid demonstration of their commitment to pushing the boundaries of what a home theatre can be.
The high-resolution screen captures intricate details, bringing documentaries and films to life with stunning clarity and realism.
The spatial dimensions of the room, particularly the limited space beside and above the screen, posed significant audio challenges. Traditional speaker placement was not feasible, necessitating innovative solutions. Liquid Automation ingeniously split the centre channel into two separate speakers positioned above and below the screen, enhancing the front side channels. This complex audio arrangement required the powerful processing capabilities of the Trinnov surround sound processor, ensuring seamless integration and unparalleled audio clarity.
Addressing acoustic considerations was another critical aspect of the project. The close proximity of the screen to the speakers and side walls created the potential for acoustic reflections, which could detract from the overall sound quality. To combat this, Liquid Automation chose the Kvadrat Softcell solution. These panels offer a variety of sound treatments – absorption, reflection, or transparency for the speakers – allowing for a customised acoustic environment. Collaborating closely with the architects, they meticulously tested different fabrics to find the optimal solution for sound transmission. Using a frequency meter, they conducted thorough tests, ultimately selecting a fabric that provided the widest frequency range.
Beyond the confines of the home theatre, a bedroom above the room necessitated additional acoustic measures. Liquid Automation implemented an isolated floating grid with rubber mounts and multiple layers of acoustic treatment, ensuring that sound from the theatre did not disrupt the tranquillity of the sleeping quarters above.
The project began with a client’s vision of an immersive space that delivers top-notch video and audio quality. This vision presented several challenges that Liquid Automation needed to address with precision and creativity. The restriction against projection systems led them to explore alternatives, and they found their answer in Samsung’s ‘The Wall’. This high-quality video wall, renowned for its exceptional quality and feature set, became the centrepiece of the visual experience. However, the journey didn’t end with the selection of this cutting-edge display.
Customisation was key to meeting the client’s specific preferences for the design and functionality of the audiovisual system. This included personalised control interfaces and tailored audio-visual configurations, reflecting the client’s vision for the space. Anticipating future needs, the system was designed with scalability and future-proofing in mind. By selecting components and technologies capable of accommodating future upgrades and advancements, Liquid Automation ensured the long-term viability and performance of the system.
The project required close collaboration between the client, design engineers, and the installation team. Each member brought their expertise to the table, ensuring that every detail was meticulously planned and executed. The builder, Boyd Cox Construction, played a pivotal role in bringing the physical space to life.
With its innovative design solutions and meticulous attention to detail, Liquid Automation has not just created a space for entertainment but a masterpiece that reshapes the experience of home cinema. As we step into this room, we enter a world where each element is crafted not just for function but for extraordinary sensory engagement, showcasing the future of home entertainment in its most elegant form.

The clients, one a former estate agent, understood the value of space and aesthetics, having spent their careers creating perfect environments for others. In the picturesque coastal town of Kaiteriteri Beach, Nelson, New Zealand, Kaiteriteri House emerges as a model of modern luxury where design and advanced technology meld to elevate the living experience. Orchestrated by integrator The Audiophile, in collaboration with Matz Architects and Whiteridge Construction, and supported by Bays Joinery, Nelson Alarms, and Tasman Satellite, this holiday home represents a pinnacle of integrated living environments.

The ambition was to transform this property into a sanctuary infused with state-of-the-art audio-visual systems, reliable Wi-Fi, and intuitive home automation. This vision extended beyond the mere installation of high-tech enhancements; it aimed to amplify the very essence of their lifestyle and entertainment experience, both indoors and outdoors. The Audiophile’s expertise was instrumental in realising this sophisticated integration of luxury and functionality.
One can envision starting the day with the melodic sound of waves complemented by an invisible audio presence that permeates the outdoor and indoor spaces. This auditory experience is crafted through eight distinct zones that feature SpeakerCraft in-ceiling speakers and a SpeakerCraft in-wall subwoofer in the media room. The setup is powered by a Yamaha home theatre receiver, an RTI 8-zone pre-amplifier and 16-zone power amplifier, and a Yamaha streamer and radio tuner, ensuring an enveloping sound environment throughout the home.
Visual entertainment is not left behind, with a Blustream 4x4 matrix kit distributing Sky TV and other video sources across four different zones. This system ensures that high-definition and 4K content can be enjoyed from every corner of the house, enabling easy switching between different sources to suit any entertainment need.
The house also features seamless integration of streaming services such as Spotify, Apple Music, internet radio, Netflix, and Disney+, providing a wide range of content readily accessible across all devices. This is supported by a formidable network setup, consisting of a Luxul 26-port Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch and four Grandstream access points, which ensure robust high-speed internet access and consistent coverage throughout the property.
Yamaha on-wall speakers are strategically placed to provide exceptional audio quality while allowing the picturesque views of Kaiteriteri Beach to take centrestage.
Home automation, central to the project’s ethos, is designed to be both intuitive and user-friendly. Managed by an RTI control system featuring an XP6 processor with an unlimited licence, it allows the homeowner to remotely control all audiovisual equipment. Added scheduling capabilities automate the operation of lighting, shades, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems based on personal preferences, enhancing both convenience and security.
Light and shade control are intricately managed through the RTI system, with Lutron lighting setups creating programmable scenes and schedules that adjust the home’s atmosphere. HVAC control is facilitated through Sensibo, enabling remote activation to ensure the home is always welcoming.
Security is rigorously addressed with a comprehensive setup including a HikVision closed-circuit television (CCTV) system and a Paradox alarm system, complemented by a HikVision intercom that integrates seamlessly with the client’s iPhones. The client, an aficionado of luxury who possesses several high-end residences, aimed to eclipse his previous Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) private home theatre, aspiring for a sophisticated 3D sound audio system that could deliver the enchantment of commercial cinema into his dwelling. Sentiment Electronic Technology, celebrated for their exacting craftsmanship, proposed a Dolby-authorised home theatre, ensuring adherence to Dolby’s commercial specifications for acoustics and video. This project was not merely about crafting a home cinema; it was about replicating a commercial cinema experience within a private residence.
Incorporating all Dolby-branded audio products ensured that the theatre conformed to the highest standards. With over 32 channels of speaker layout, the system was engineered to produce immersive soundscapes, precisely reproducing the dynamic movement of sound objects.
The bespoke theatre seats, sourced from the Lamborghini Casa Luxury Furniture brand, complement the dynamic lighting accents, creating a luxurious and modern cinema environment in the client’s home.
Collaboration with Dolby was rigorous, involving the Dolby Audio Room Design Tool and thorough communication with Dolby engineers. The outcome was China’s first residential Dolby-certified project, a remarkable achievement highlighting the precision and commitment of the team involved.
The interior design drew inspiration from the client’s cherished Lamborghini sports car. Ambient linear lighting, echoing the sleek contours of a Lamborghini, together with cinema chairs from the Lamborghini Casa Luxury Furniture brand, infused the space with an air of velocity and opulence. The lighting accents, dynamic and contemporary, were designed to respond to the sound effects of the client’s favoured concerts, facilitated by the Madrix lighting system. This innovative system allowed the ambient lighting to adapt and react to the rhythm, sound pressure, and frequency of the music, creating a fully immersive visual and auditory experience.
A centralised control system integrated lighting, equipment, comfort systems, and the DCI movie server, offering user-friendly, one-touch control accessible to all family members. This level of integration ensured that the intricate technology remained approachable and straightforward, capturing the essence of modern smart home systems.
The sound system was a marvel of engineering. With Dolby-branded processors, power amplifiers, and speakers, the system delivered unparalleled audio fidelity. The complex curved acoustic panels ensured each screen
channel speaker was accurately aimed at the centre listener, maintaining vertical alignment with the curved acoustic transparent screen. Behind this screen, two dual 18" subwoofers provided ultra-low frequencies, complemented by two additional 18" subwoofers at the rear. These subwoofers, strategically placed in isolated concrete boxes, addressed room mode issues and delivered powerful, room-filling bass.
The comprehensive viewing experience was further enriched with the inclusion of streaming content from platforms like Apple TV and various Chinese video services, catering to the diverse preferences of the client. The newly rebuilt family residence, known as ‘Kings’, epitomises luxury and cuttingedge technology, harmoniously blending architectural elegance with the ultimate in smart home integration. The visionary minds behind this project include Andrew Tzannes from Smith & Tzannes as the architect and Brendon Wong Design crafting the exquisite interiors.

Denote employed Fortinet’s high-level security features, offering real-time threat assessment and a fully managed network that ensured peace of mind. This architectural triumph, designed by the visionaries at PTW Architects and constructed with precision by builder Lendlease, is a collaborative e ort with lighting by Electrolight, setting new benchmarks in the realm of multiple dwelling units.

One Sydney Harbour’s narrative extends beyond its physical structure to the advanced lifestyle it offers its residents. This prominent tower, part of the expansive redevelopment of Barangaroo’s shoreline, is a showcase of international design excellence, influenced by the renowned Italian architect Renzo Piano. Within its walls are 313 smart homes, each an epitome of comfort, convenience, and connected living.
The project’s success is significantly attributed to the integrator, Kayder, who ensured each residence was equipped with a comprehensive smart home experience. Residents enjoy a life where lighting, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), shade control, underfloor heating, heated towel rails, and intercom systems are effortlessly managed at their fingertips. The residences feature the Crestron Home OS4, an advanced platform that elevates the living experience by offering seamless control over the environment. As well as every apartment using the Crestron Home OS as central command, to provide unparalleled control and convenience, the integration includes Crestron processors, 10-inch touch panels, Horizon keypads, and mobile app connectivity, simplifying home management. Features such as motorised curtains, heated towel rails, and underfloor heating systems are synchronised for seamless operation, enhancing the residential experience.

OUTDOOR TECHNOLOGY – EXTENDING THE LIVING SPACE: CEDIA CPD
Outdoor spaces have become an essential part of our living spaces, and as architects, it is crucial to understand the technology available to extend and enhance the functionality of these spaces.
In this course, we will explore the latest audio and video technologies, lighting, water management, and security technologies that can be integrated to create a comprehensive outdoor living space. We will also discuss the benefits of integrating these technologies through a centralised control system.
The course will start by looking at the latest trends in outdoor technology and how they can be incorporated into your architectural designs. From outdoor TVs to sound systems and projectors, we will explore the various options available to provide a complete entertainment experience for your clients. We will also discuss the latest lighting options that can be used to enhance the beauty and functionality of outdoor spaces, including the use of LED lighting and smart lighting systems that can be controlled remotely.

Amid the sun-drenched landscape of the Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, a home named Pala emerges with architectural brilliance and technological sophistication. Bridger Automation, known for their turn-key automated solutions, has breathed life into this modern marvel, ensuring that security and seamless integration are paramount. This home is not just another project; it’s a sanctuary for a family that includes two young boys, embodying security and comfort in an ever-evolving world where safety is increasingly important.
The journey began with a family that was both the client and the primary builder, Havendeen Projects. This dual role added layers of complexity and demanded unparalleled attention to detail. The clients, working closely with the esteemed architect Joe Snell of Studio Snell and the innovative interior designer Three Balls Red, envisioned a forever home that exuded modernity while embracing the lifestyle of its north-facing waterfront location. The challenge was clear: to create a sophisticated, user-friendly smart home that could be operated effortlessly, ensuring the family’s comfort and safety without overwhelming them with technology.
Understanding that the clients were not tech-savvy was pivotal. Bridger Automation recognised the necessity for an intuitive and reliable system, a cornerstone in the design brief. The integration of an RTI automation system became the heart of the home, seamlessly controlling lighting, fans, blinds, curtains, windows, doors, security, air conditioning, and an extensive audio-visual network across 11 zones. Each zone, whether independent or grouped, operated with a simplicity that belied the complex engineering behind it.
Security, a recurring theme throughout the project, was addressed with precision. As crime rates surged in the Gold Coast area, the need for a robust yet subtle security system became evident. Bridger Automation’s solution was comprehensive: strategically placed cameras, security keypads, motion sensors, and door reeds ensured that every corner of the property was monitored. The integration of an IP video intercom system provided control and notifications from any internet-enabled device, offering the family peace of mind at all times.
The aesthetic vision of Joe Snell was brought to life through the careful consideration of raw materials. The extensive use of off-form concrete ceilings, steel reinforcements, polished concrete floors, and expansive glass surfaces posed significant challenges. These elements, while contributing to the home’s striking visual appeal, required innovative solutions for cabling and wireless connectivity. Bridger Automation’s choice of the Araknis networks, known for its robust performance, ensured that Wi-Fi signals remained strong throughout the home, overcoming the physical barriers posed by the construction materials.

Comfort in the Pala home is enhanced by the meticulous Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) control system. The Gold Coast’s climate, with its warm summers and cool winters, demanded a sophisticated solution. Bridger Automation’s integration of the Cool Master system, overlaying the Daikin HVAC system, provided seamless control over 15 heating and cooling zones. The custom graphical user interface (GUI), accessible via tablet or phone, offered a stylish and reliable way to maintain the perfect indoor environment year-round.
Budget considerations, as with any project, were dynamic. Initial estimates evolved as the clients’ trust in Bridger Automation grew, allowing for the exploration of new technological paths that maximised the home’s functionality and aesthetic appeal. This trust was not misplaced; the collaborative effort resulted in a home that is not only a secure haven but also a hub for entertainment and relaxation, reflecting the clients’ lifestyle and values.

The essence of a home lies not just in its structural elements, but in the spaces that breathe life into it. For one family in Queensland, Australia, their newly acquired residence was incomplete without a dedicated media room. This space was envisioned not merely as any room, but as a multi-functional sanctuary for movie nights, gaming sessions, and vibrant sports gatherings. Upon discovering cinema designer The Digital Picture through a Google search, their journey towards creating the perfect home cinema commenced.
The challenge presented by the client was as intriguing as it was daunting. The client possessed a second-floor room encased entirely in glass, an architect’s dream yet an acoustical challenge. “What can we do with this space?” they queried. The solution would demonstrate a blend of innovation, expertise, and the art of balancing aesthetics with functionality.
From the beginning, it was evident that the room had to serve multiple purposes. Located above a bar area in a secluded wing of the house, it was ideally situated for late-night sports events and entertainment, ensuring that activities would not disturb the rest of the household. This setup led to a pivotal design decision: the screen needed to be visible even with ambient light, a significant challenge given the glass surrounds.
The initial site meeting and subsequent visit to The Digital Picture’s showroom set the project’s foundations. Inspired

by a smaller demonstration room, the client envisioned scaling up the audio system to a 7.1.4 channel configuration, a step up from the showroom’s 5.1.4 setup. This introduced a design challenge — the need to achieve the same auditory excellence in a much larger space. Peak Sound Pressure Levels (SPL) were adjusted meticulously, ensuring the larger room retained the intimate sound quality the client admired.
Video was another critical component. The client was captivated by a larger screen in the demonstration room, opting for a cinemascope screen over a traditional 16:9 ratio, due to existing bulkhead constraints. A Sony 7000ES projector paired with a Lumagen video processor was chosen to deliver exceptional image quality. This setup allowed sports to be displayed in full width on the 2.39:1 screen, essential for the avid sports enthusiasts.
Acoustic control was paramount. With limited options, a baffle wall behind the screen and 100mm absorber boards on the rear wall were installed to manage reflections. Custom heavy acoustic light-block curtains were selected to complement the interior design while mitigating sound reflections. A star ceiling panel system was integrated, balancing aesthetic appeal with functional acoustics, ensuring the high-frequency sounds were not over-treated. The floor was layered with a heavy acoustic underlay beneath new carpeting, enhancing the overall sound experience without overwhelming the room’s acoustics.
The room’s layout was a collaborative effort, with The Digital Picture assisting in selecting carpet, curtains, paint, lighting, and general interior design elements. Practicality met elegance as the team navigated constraints, such as the decision to use shelves instead of slide-out racks for the equipment, due to spatial and budgetary limits.
The transformation resulted in a space that not only met but exceeded the client’s expectations. The reverberation time measurements — a critical acoustic indicator — were precisely as calculated in the design, with a slight rise below 150Hz, ensuring the room sounded exceptional. More than just a technical success, the media room became a vibrant hub of activity, perfectly balancing entertainment with comfort.
On a typical Saturday night, with the balcony doors flung open, sports broadcasting on the large screen, and laughter permeating the air, the room demonstrates its full potential. In line with the clients’ wish for a subtle touch of automation, the house is equipped with features that enhance their living experience without overshadowing the natural beauty of the surroundings. For instance, the holiday mode is a marvel of simplicity and functionality. Programmed to switch lights on and off when the alarm is armed, it creates the illusion of occupancy, seamlessly integrating the Lutron lighting system with the ICT security system. This feature epitomises the balance between technology and the lived experience, offering peace of mind without intrusion.

The Corso, a sophisticated waterfront residence on the sunny Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, exemplifies the seamless integration of cutting-edge technology with architectural elegance. Designed by Justin Humphrey Architects and constructed by M2 Construct, this home is the third smart home project completed for this client by integrator Bridger Automation over the past decade. The established relationship and mutual trust between the client and Bridger Automation facilitated a swift and e ective design process, delivering a solution perfectly tailored to integrate technology with the client’s lifestyle.

From the outset, Bridger Automation recognised that their tech-savvy clients were enthusiasts rather than apprehensive users of technology. This unique approach enabled them to introduce advanced features such as landscape speaker systems for outdoor entertainment, robust power management for a secure home office network, and digital addressable lighting interface (DALI)-controlled lighting that catered to the client’s preference for subtle, low-level feature lighting. These were new additions to an already sophisticated system, demonstrating Bridger Automation’s commitment to innovation and the client’s trust in their expertise.
A key objective was to ensure that the technology solutions harmonised with the home’s architectural vision, characterised by minimal walls and extensive use of raw concrete. Achieving high-quality audio in such an environment required imaginative solutions. Bridger Automation collaborated with distributor
Amber Technology to use Sonance’s Invisible series speakers, integrating them seamlessly into the walls without compromising the home’s aesthetic. The combination of invisible speakers in the lounge and custom-installed traditional inceiling speakers in the kitchen and al fresco areas provided a rich audio experience, enhancing the home’s entertainment capabilities.
Security was a major concern for the clients, especially considering the rising crime rates in the Gold Coast area. Bridger Automation designed a comprehensive security system, including closed-circuit television (CCTV), intruder alarms, access-controlled doors, and a video IP intercom system. This layered approach, integrated with the Control4 platform, offered the clients peace of mind by allowing them to monitor and secure their home from anywhere in the world through an intuitive application.
The network infrastructure was significantly challenged by the home’s construction materials, primarily steel, concrete, and glass. Bridger Automation opted for the Araknis network, known for its robust performance and value for money. The central management via OvrC integration simplified control, programming, and troubleshooting, ensuring a seamless wireless network throughout the property.

Maintaining a comfortable indoor environment in the warm Gold Coast climate posed a unique challenge for the home’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system.
Bridger Automation rose to the occasion by implementing a Cool Master solution to overlay the Daikin HVAC system, seamlessly integrating it with the Control4 platform. This sophisticated setup allows for intuitive control via tablets and smartphones, ensuring precise and reliable temperature regulation—an essential feature for a home with expansive, north-facing floor-to-ceiling glass.
The Corso’s pool control and filtration systems were also automated to enhance convenience.
Bridger Automation used a Philips Dynalite I/O sense module to control the filtration pumps and chlorinator, with a custom stainless press button on the feature timber deck for spa control. The system’s scheduling feature allowed easy operation of the pool equipment, tailored to the seasonal requirements.
Motorised louvres were installed to ensure proper air circulation, crucial for maintaining a fresh and healthy indoor environment. The automated schedules for opening and closing the louvers helped distribute heat or cool air evenly throughout the home, contributing to a comfortable living space year-round.

DUNE CINEMA PROJECT:
During the COVID-19 pandemic, a passionate film enthusiast sought to bring his vision of the perfect home cinema to life. Despite the restrictions, this dream was realised through the innovative e orts of Wavetrain Cinemas, a company renowned for their turnkey cinema solutions. The project, known as Dune Cinema, is a testament to Wavetrain’s expertise and the client’s trust in their capabilities.
Drawing inspiration from the Dune motif, he sought to create a calming environment that resonated with the client’s tech-centric and science ction interests.
The client, an avid movie lover, initially engaged with Wavetrain through virtual meetings due to lockdown restrictions. The journey began with an impressive demonstration at a nearby client’s home, which left him in awe. This led to his decision to proceed with Wavetrain, even though they were located in a different state. The client entrusted Wavetrain with complete creative freedom, with the only brief being: “Surprise me.” This challenge allowed Wavetrain to delve into their creative reserves and conceive the Dune theme, inspired by a promotional poster seen long before the film’s release.
The design process was complex, given the room’s dimensions of approximately 4.5m by 5.2m, with irregular angles and low ceilings. David Moseley, the cinema designer, aimed to soften the room’s harsh lines with organic curves and circles.
Drawing inspiration from the Dune motif, he sought to create a calming environment that resonated with the client’s tech-centric and science fiction interests. The design choice struck a chord with the client, who enthusiastically approved it after an extensive online presentation. The collaboration’s success was further highlighted by a commissioned Dune mural by a street artist, enhancing the project’s exterior and demonstrating the client’s satisfaction.
Audio quality was a paramount concern. Wavetrain integrated Elementi Audio ‘Air’ active speaker solutions, featuring Air Motion Transformer (AMT) tweeters. These speakers provided a wide horizontal dispersion and a relaxed, immersive sound environment. The 9.4.4 speaker configuration and strategic placement overcame the room’s limitations, achieving flat frequency responses down to 20Hz.

Addressing the architectural challenges required innovative solutions. Compliance with national building codes necessitated fresh air intake, which Wavetrain achieved by creating an insulated vertical riser behind a bookcase. This system balanced air pressure and mitigated sound leakage using insulation and inline fans. Additionally, a bass trap was integrated into the rear left corner to enhance acoustic performance. The projector ventilation and pressure release system were designed to maintain functionality without compromising the cinema’s atmosphere.
Lighting was pivotal in actualising the Dune theme. The ‘Eclipse’ on the ceiling, a central feature, employed addressable RGB LED strips to create dynamic lighting scenes. Primarily red and orange, the lighting setup included various selectable colours, controlled
independently of the wall and fibre optic lighting. This meticulous attention to detail, akin to yacht building, ensured that every panel and finish was executed to perfection.
The Dune Cinema exemplifies the seamless integration of technology and design. Wavetrain’s ability to navigate spatial and technical challenges, combined with the client’s faith in their vision, resulted in a cinematic experience that surpasses expectations.

Amid the heritage facades and contemporary vibrance of Sydney, a distinctive collaboration between artistry and technology has given rise to the ‘Signature Cinema’, masterfully orchestrated by Wavetrain Cinemas. This project embodies a fusion of aesthetic elegance and technological sophistication, redefining the expectations of a home theatre.
The foundation of this exceptional endeavour was the client’s desire to incorporate the immersive qualities of the Elementi ‘Air’ digital active speaker system with Air Motion Transformer (AMT) tweeters. Navigating the project’s evolving requirements presented significant challenges, including competitive pressures from other companies. Wavetrain’s response showcased their adaptability and commitment to client satisfaction, offering several revised proposals that maintained the integrity of the audio system while adapting other elements to fit the evolving project scope.
D-box seating significantly enhances the cinematic experience by adding a tactile dimension that goes beyond audio and visual components. This technology, often underappreciated, transforms infra-sonic bass from an unintentional recording artefact into an intentional, impactful sensory addition. After experiencing the D-box in action, the vast majority of Wavetrain’s clients opt to include this feature in their setups, recognising its value in enhancing the narrative depth of films.
The cinema’s lighting was designed with both aesthetics and functionality in mind. Continuous LED strips were used to eliminate any visual distractions, creating a seamless integration with the cinema’s interior design. Strategic placement of downlights supported various functionalities – from cleaning to reading – ensuring that they complement rather than compromise the viewing experience.

TINY HOUSE, BIG SHED –AN AUTOMATED FARM
In the rugged beauty of New Zealand, where mountains meet the sea, a vision of o -grid living has been realised – a project that marries the raw charm of nature with the sophistication of modern technology. This remarkable undertaking by Automation Associates is known as ‘Tiny House, Big Shed – An Automated Farm’. This unique integration showcases the transformative power of smart home technology, deftly interwoven with the architectural elegance envisioned by Crosson Architects, the meticulous craftsmanship of builder Renovation Masters, and the aesthetic finesse of interior designer Matter.
The project’s origin is a tribute to the client’s profound connection to both the land and the world of electronics. An eight-bay shed has been constructed on this beachside farm, its monolithic rectangular form echoing the aesthetic of a 16-pin integrated circuit, a nod to the client’s background. This architectural marvel, with its precise lines and minimalist grandeur, serves as a temporary abode in Bay 8 – a tiny home destined to become guest accommodation once the main house is constructed. The ingenious use of red-green-blue-cool white (RGBCW) strip lighting throughout the shed draws parallels to printed circuit board traces, seamlessly blending technology with design.
Living off-grid demands a nuanced approach to power management, a challenge Automation Associates met with ingenuity and foresight. The site’s remote location required a renewable energy (RE) system capable of enduring New Zealand’s temperamental weather. By integrating the RE system with the automation setup, the client’s daily routines are effortlessly adjusted based on the system’s state of charge (SOC). This seamless interaction between systems is designed to maintain simplicity for both
residents and future guests, eliminating the need for cluttered displays and ensuring intuitive control.
Automation Associates faced spatial challenges within Bay 8’s compact 6x10m dimensions, necessitating clever product selection and placement. Even the structural supports required coordination with a structural engineer to accommodate essential controls. This careful orchestration extended to audiovisual elements, where the high ceilings and glass walls posed significant design obstacles. By pre-wiring for future installations and judiciously managing power loads, Automation Associates ensured that the system remains adaptable, capable of expanding without compromising current functionality.

Automation Associates, in collaboration with Plug In Power, devised solutions that ensure minimal reliance on generators, maximising the efficacy of the RE system. High colour rendering index (CRI) warm white and RGBCW LED strips provide full spectrum control, enhancing both the aesthetic and health benefits of the lighting. Even the underfloor heating system is optimised to make the most of the available energy, while the HRV system harnesses warm air from upstairs to heat lower rooms.
Security and convenience are seamlessly integrated into the system. From gate controls triggered by vehicle detection to extensive irrigation management, the automation ensures that every aspect of farm life is under control, whether the client is on-site or away. The intelligent water management system, for instance, uses real-time data to adjust irrigation schedules and monitor tank levels, ensuring optimal water usage.
In ‘Tiny House, Big Shed – An Automated Farm’, Automation Associates has crafted more than just an off-grid retreat; they have created a dynamic interplay of technology and nature, where every element harmonises to enhance the living experience. In the suburbs of Victoria, Australia, where the urban bustle gives way to quietude, one homeowner envisioned a home that melded sleek modernity with unparalleled convenience. This vision was brought to life in ‘Urban Retreat’ by the masterful hands of integrator Nisi Group, under the discerning eye of Dean Dyson Architects, supported by partners Snap One, Kordz Australia, Jayvee Technologies, CSD Security, and Energy Wired.
From the beginning, the journey was collaborative and immersive. Meeting the homeowner during the design phase allowed Nisi Group to meticulously map out a smart home system that was as intuitive as it was innovative. The cornerstone of this journey was Control4 automation, a technology that promised seamless integration and bespoke customisation. The homeowner’s initial fascination with the Control4 touch screens quickly evolved into a comprehensive plan that covered every aspect of his futuristic abode.
Security was paramount for the homeowner, especially given the home’s proximity to a laneway. Nisi Group responded with a robust closed-circuit television (CCTV) system equipped with high-resolution cameras, night vision, and extensive storage capabilities. This ensured that every corner of Urban Retreat was monitored, providing the homeowner with the peace of mind he desired.

A particularly memorable moment came when the “INTRUDER ALERT!” system, co-designed with the homeowner, proved its worth. An attempted break-in was thwarted by flashing red LEDs, blaring alarms, and a booming voice announcement, a testament to the system’s efficacy and the homeowner’s foresight.

Lighting and climate control were woven into the fabric of the home’s automation system, offering both luxury and efficiency. Building the Urban Retreat on a narrow block with four levels presented its own set of challenges. The vertical layout demanded innovative solutions for wiring and equipment installation, ensuring seamless connectivity across all floors. The constrained space required precise coordination among various trades, careful planning, and an unwavering commitment to maintaining the aesthetic integrity of Dean Dyson Architects’ sleek design.
The limited site access, coupled with logistical hurdles, tested the team’s resolve. Yet, through meticulous planning and a relentless work ethic, Nisi Group triumphed. The end result was a harmonious blend of technology and architecture, a sanctuary that epitomised modern living at its finest.

HILLTOP OASIS
Perched on an Australian mountainside, Hilltop Oasis exemplifies the seamless integration of advanced technology within a thoughtfully designed architectural space. This property, part of a private gated compound with sweeping views towards the beach and surrounding hinterland, recently underwent a comprehensive renovation that expanded its footprint and added new structures including a guest house, o ce/workshop, pool house, cellar and a home cinema.
The home cinema, positioned up-hill from the main residence, is a masterpiece of design and functionality. Access to this secluded retreat is ingeniously hidden behind a concealed door to the left of the cinema screen, which opens into a study that doubles as part of an effective sound isolation system. The project was spearheaded by cinema designer The Digital Picture, an integrator specialising in high-end home cinemas. They were tasked with marrying their sophisticated technologies with an existing Control4 automation system, ensuring a blend of old and new that functioned seamlessly under one roof.
The client insisted on simplicity, leading to the continuation of the familiar SR260 remote control, compatible with the upgraded Control4 automation network. The Digital Picture’s collaborative efforts with the original Control4 integrator were crucial, allowing the upgraded system to integrate smoothly with the existing setup.
Aesthetic coherence was also key. The client desired a modern and uncluttered interior, which was achieved through close collaboration with their interior designer. Together, they selected wall stretch fabrics, bespoke carpeting, and a rear cabinet arrangement that not only aligned with the home’s overall style but also met specific acoustic and technological needs. The sunken seating area was meticulously designed to optimise both acoustics and sight lines, reflecting the client’s high standards for both comfort and style.
Sound isolation was a major concern, especially given the region’s frequent heavy rainfall. Separate from the main house, the cinema needed to keep sounds from escaping, particularly towards the nearby guest house and living areas. Detailed specifications were provided to the builders to ensure the room’s perimeter and air-conditioning system met the required weighted sound reduction index (or, Rw) rating, creating a cocoon of silence within the cinema.
Internally, the room’s acoustics were finely tuned using a combination of absorption and 3D diffusion strategies. Absorber boards rated with a noise reduction coefficient (NRC) of 0.95, with strategic air gaps, and diffusion panels were deployed to manage echoes and reverberations, achieving a balanced acoustic environment with a reverberation time of approximately 300ms.
The elegant design of Hilltop Oasis’s cinema room showcases the sleek, modern aesthetic requested by the client, with acoustically treated walls and a high-resolution screen ensuring an unparalleled viewing experience.
A key feature for the client was the bar at the rear of the cinema, complete with a mirror. Addressing this within the acoustic framework, the integrators designed the joinery to minimise vibration interference. Each partition of the joinery was carefully sectioned in order to allow for exact subwoofer placement across the rear wall to improve bass performance throughout the seating area. In order to prevent vibrations from the subwoofers from disturbing sensitive equipment and glassware, the rear subwoofers were mounted on acoustic absorber mats and connected to the joinery using rubber isolation mounts to dampen vibrations.
Hilltop Oasis is a remarkable example of how technology and architecture can converge to create a living space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The successful collaboration between The Digital Picture, the interior designer, and other project partners has resulted in a space that not only fulfils the client’s vision but enhances it.
