ABOUT CEDIA

AWARDS YEARBOOK 2017

CEDIA is the international trade association and central touchpoint for 3,700 member companies that represent every facet of the ever-evolving technology market.

CEDIA | Our History

Established in 2006, the CEDIA Awards program is the home technology industry’s most prestigious honor, celebrating technical excellence in design, installation, and integration across the globe. Each year, CEDIA members worldwide put their best projects forward — installations that set the standard for custom technology integration.

The association powers integrators’ passion by providing development pathways that move them to the next level through education, community, resources, and vision. CEDIA members deliver technology solutions that allow people to have their best moments in life from the comfort of their own home: Life Lived Best at Home™.

2

CEDIA was founded in 1989 by a group of professionals dedicated to the advancement of the up-and-coming electronic systems industry. Their vision was to advocate for the needs of the home technology professional by becoming the industry’s leading resource — promoting commerce, offering training, and aiding in the assembly of a legitimate industry that was at the time considered more of a hobby. Since that time, CEDIA has grown into an international association with more than 3,700 member companies worldwide and has come to be recognized as the universal mark of professionalism for residential technology businesses. The association has expanded tremendously in the 28 years of its existence. The CEDIA show is a great example of the evolution of this industry. The first CEDIA show, held in Amelia Island, FL, hosted 500 attendees and featured table-top displays from some of the industry’s pioneers. The show has grown exponentially since that time in both exhibiting companies and attendees. CEDIA 2017 in San Diego drew more than 500 exhibiting companies and over 20,000 attendees. CEDIA has advanced the industry by developing timely industry education and certification; launching research initiatives; advocating on legislative issues; building relationships with architects, builders, and interior designers; educating the consumer; and recognizing industry achievement.

CEDIA | What We Do CEDIA offers year-round training and certification opportunities. The association is committed to offering education that helps members become experts in the field, and the CEDIA Certification program is constantly expanded and updated to mirror technological advances. CEDIA provides comprehensive opportunities for its members to learn every aspect of the residential tech business with boot camps, webinars, trade show courses, and much more. CEDIA complements its hands-on training with online education products. CEDIA offers its members a broad array of services and opportunities to network, both online and in person. CEDIA Groups are small collections of like-minded members who meet regularly via phone or web conference to share their knowledge and experiences. The CEDIA Community is a broader online platform that allows members to trade advice, documents, and technical and business tips.

CEDIA’s Government Affairs team is the industry’s watchdog at the policy level, helping protect members from harmful legislation with its lobbying efforts. CEDIA’s Industry Relations program ensures members are partnering with pros in other key fields, from architecture to real estate. CEDIA’s Technology Council is constantly on the lookout for emerging trends and opportunities, and CEDIA regularly seeks opportunities to provide its members with updated best-practices guidelines, business resources, and marketing tools. CEDIA's consumer website, CEDIA.org, provides homeowners with information about home technology amenities along with a complete list of members who can deliver the services a potential client needs. None of what CEDIA does can be accomplished without its members, and that is why CEDIA’s robust and engaged volunteers are the backbone of the association.

ABOUT THE AWARDS

EMEA SPONSORS

This year saw submissions from more than 18 countries, all competing for the top prizes in 2017. The battle to win this prestigious accolade has never been tougher, with judging panels looking at all aspects of design, installation, and documentation. Regional judging followed a rigorous technical assessment to determine the category winners. Judges considered compliance with industry best practice, technical challenges and solutions, and how the integrator met the client’s requirements. The entries were also put through their paces to find the projects where design and technology were best matched. Throughout the judging process, the identity of member companies taking part in the CEDIA Awards scheme remained completely anonymous to preserve the integrity of the adjudication process. With the CEDIA Awards running in the Americas, Asia Pacific, and EMEA regions, a panel of global judges assessed all winning entries from the three regions and identified “the best of the best.” These global winners were announced at the CEDIA EMEA awards ceremony.

guests came together for a black tie event. The Americas celebration saw over 200 people gather on the USS Midway in San Diego to honor their regional winners, and 100 people attended a ceremony at Integrate 2017 in Australia to announce the Asia Pacific winners. The EMEA ceremony was sponsored by Bowers & Wilkins, Definitive Technology, HEOS, IFSEC International, Meridian Audio, Murideo, and The Cinema Designer. The Americas ceremony was sponsored by DISH. TwentyTwo Integration faced challenges from the word “go,” with the client brief being very clear that this media room should be all about the aesthetics. This meant that the integrator had to specify the media solution to suit the design, and not the other way around.

Sony BDP-S3500 Blu-ray player

Due to the room’s many hard surfaces; the client not wanting a soundbar to distract from the symmetry of the wood panelling surrounding the screen; and the TV being recessed within the wood panelling, TwentyTwo Integration had to pay close attention to the sound quality in the space and how it would project around the room. To overcome these issues, TwentyTwo installed Leon Profile Pr55 Series speakers, which were custom matched to the height of the video screen and were specified in the multi-channel arrangement, so that the front LCR soundstage for the 5.1 system was delivered by a pair of speakers. A custom-made James Loudspeaker in-ceiling soundbar was installed, with angled speakers to create a wide sound stage. This media room was part of a larger install, and coupled with the fact that space for the electronics was nonexistent, the amplifiers were located in the house’s main equipment rack.

When the scope of the project shifted from a standard home theater to a larger media room containing a theater, both the space and the budget called for creativity. That creativity included a reconfiguration of the basement’s HVAC ductwork, a specially built wall to close off 70% of the room, a custom closet built for the rack, and acoustic treatments to compensate for the unusual footprint.

A relatively small budget demanded creativity

Additionally, all the gear had to be hidden — another miracle this firm managed to pull off with a five-figure price tag.

Triad InWall Bronze/4 subwoofer

The team at Casaplex detailed some of the biggest hurdles: “The HVAC presented an issue for this room for two reasons: one, we were breaking one large room into two; and two, we were installing a Dolby Atmos system. This dictated that we ensure our reconstructed space would be adequately heated and cooled and that we reconfigure the ductwork to allow for optimal positioning of the Dolby Atmos speakers. “With the two large windows and the client’s desire for a kitchen, the shape of the space was not conducive for audio performance. By enclosing part of the room, and using acoustical treatments and stretched fabric on 80% of the room, we were able to compensate for the oddly shaped footprint.”

The proposal for this project was relatively simple — create a cool room to watch football and play music. The client had a huge CD and vinyl collection that needed to be stored in this space, and wanted a high-quality DJ system that would allow him to play the music in every room in the house. After visiting the property, Life Emotions realized that the room acoustics were dreadful, and made acoustic treatment and isolation of the room one of its top priorities. The integrator installed two Vicoustic panels on the wall, each capable of rotating in

different directions so that a uniform, omnidirectional scattering of sound could be achieved, with particularly effective diffusion of the mid- and high-frequencies. For the visual aspect, Life Emotions installed a 75" Sony 4K TV to allow the client to watch Apple TV, and streamed content from Netflix, Spotify, and Tidal. This screen would also be used for video conferencing. Turning the attention to the DJ rig, the integrator designed a table to accommodate the required equipment, and integrated it into the Savant control system, which also controlled all AV, lighting, and HVAC. Due to the remote location of the property, Life Emotions installed a Pakedge power distribution unit to allow for remote monitoring.

Another concern in this new build: proper power management. “Power conditioners were installed at both the local rack end and the projector hush box. This was the only way to ensure that any electrical spikes or inherent noise was not brought into the room affecting audio and video quality.” Other appliances nearby are isolated so as not to interfere with the room’s clean power sources.

From the ceramic bearings in the projector box’s fans to the racks being stowed behind breathable fabric, every step was taken to reduce the noise floor of this room. Liquid Automation explained in further detail: “The cabinetry at the front of the cinema was designed as essentially a fabric-paneled frame. Requiring a space where the family and friends can escape the worries of their daily lives, the client turned to Synergy Technologies to create a sanctuary that delivers an immersive AV experience. After spending time at the integrator’s showroom, the client took a keen interest in the AV performance that could be achieved, as well as the room design, acoustics, and comfort levels. To meet the requirement for superb performance and immersive sound, the integrator specified a B&W 800 Diamond Series system with a McIntosh MX-160 processor to deliver 3D audio. For the visual element, Synergy Technologies opted for a DILA projector to achieve the best contrast and black levels, and a Screen Innovation projection screen in cinemascope format. Simplicity of operation held prime importance as the room was to be used by all family members. Synergy Technologies leveraged innovative GUI methods to achieve this. To avoid a full fabric-paneled cinema look and to keep the speakers invisible, Synergy Technologies concealed the surround speakers behind the wood finish perforated acoustic panels. The integrator carried out extensive listening tests as well as frequency response measurements to identify the best speaker positions in the panels, and carefully tweaked the wall elevation design and the distance of the speaker baffle behind the acoustic panels to achieve a completely invisible appearance, with no discernible loss in sonic performance.

The award-winning entry in this category was described by CEDIA’s judges as “an incredible installation for the price.” The project began as a media room with a large TV, but after several meetings, the integrator convinced the client that a dedicated cinema would better satisfy their needs. Once the team at The Digital Picture showed the client the benefits of a dedicated theater with a 16:9 screen and a 4K projector, the deal was closed. The consultation process was critical in this instance: an original budget of $20,000 AUD soon doubled as the client became more and more educated regarding immersive audio and other gear. Acoustic treatments were key to the room’s success, as was power management — the client

This young family wanted a dual-use home cinema to be enjoyed for family movie nights, as well as by the client and his friends for big rugby matches. It was important to the client to maximize the floor space, to have an optimal viewing and listening experience for everyone in the room, and to be able to upgrade the space in the future. Philharmonic AV knew their first challenge would be to find a flush in-wall speaker system that would not require the walls to be built out, thus taking up desirable floor space. As a result, they specified Artcoustic speakers paired with KEF subwoofers for a slim profile solution. Next up was finding a screen that needed to deliver an exceptional picture, fit the space, and still be considered large enough by the client’s standards. The solution became a 110" acoustically transparent

Screen Research model, paired with a Sony VW300ES projector. Knowing the client’s desire to have a space that could evolve with technology advances, Philharmonic AV designed a system with the ability to accept local sources so that updates could easily be made, as well as a future provision for Dolby Atmos. Finally, knowing that children and guests would be using the system, the integrator opted for a Control4 SR-250 handheld remote which feels familiar to most people.

The biggest challenge was that the entire left side of the room was glass and the client insisted on a clean and uncluttered look along that wall. The solution? In-ceiling speakers with built-in angled front baffles, and a motorized shade that provides sound absorption when the theater is in use. None of the speakers or gear are visible — everything in the room is hidden behind stretched fabric.

Sound isolation was also something of a challenge, since a noisy equipment room sits adjacent to the room’s front wall and a motorized lift for a TV that rises into a games room on another floor sits next to a side wall.

Careful acoustic tuning was key to this cinema’s success, and the project also demanded a dedicated HVAC system that provides a perfect climate while operating below the room’s desired noise floor. This project was about collaboration from the onset. The client and his wife (the architect for their new home) brought The Pyramid Group in before the start of the build to discuss how they could integrate a cinema into their home. This planning allowed for all the technical requirements to be met for the room without any issue. The audio in the room is incredibly well balanced: Speakers blend into one cohesive sound field with no perceptible single source, the bass is very tight and accurate, and the system headroom creates the necessary dynamics that this environment needed. The end result is that the room disappears, leaving the AV to envelop the audience. All cinema speaker and audio designs align with the guidelines for Dolby Atmos configurations, as well as incorporating the CEDIA whitepaper guidelines for loudspeaker placement.

Patient collaboration and an artful rack helped this project win What could have been a difficult situation turned out to be a blessing in this instance: The client wanted a home theater in his new vacation home that delivered the same results as his existing cinema — one that he had designed himself. The client understood he’d gotten lucky in the design of his first home theater, but this time wanted to ensure it wouldn’t be a hit-or-miss proposition and called in a CEDIA pro. A pair, actually — this project was a collaboration between Paradise Theater and AudioVisions. The client was also very concerned with the aesthetics of the room, and the builder had never faced the level of stringency required to provide a proper, CEDIA-worthy audio/visual experience. The size of the room, its location in the home, and many design considerations weren’t negotiable. Another challenge was one many CEDIA pros are familiar with — new technologies became available as the project progressed. “Immersive audio formats came on the scene just as we were about to close up the room,” noted the integrators. Adjustments were made for an upgrade to 3D sound. In the end, patient collaboration among designer, builder, and even HVAC techs paid off brilliantly — the client loved the look of the theater, while CEDIA’s judges were knocked out by the system’s rack, which they described as “artful.”

This installation managed to provide seating for seven people in a very small room For this project, Electronic Living converted a spare bedroom in an existing home to a home cinema. The problem this presented was immediately apparent: the room had an incredibly small footprint, which CEDIA’s judges noted was a very challenging space in which to work. Still, the integrator managed to both provide seating for seven people and preserve intuitive traffic patterns in and out of the space.

// PROJECT

Good Things in Small Spaces

Add to the diminutive footprint another issue: as a “habitable room,” local law demanded that a functioning window remain. A blockout blind was installed to reduce ambient light. Additionally, as costs began to mount, the client shifted the room’s audio system from an immersive one to a 7.1-surround system. Planning for the future, the integrator added the cabling needed if and when the owner makes an upgrade to 3D sound.

The HVAC system that was already present was incorporated into the design, and an air supply vent was moved to the front of the room. Viewers aren’t bothered by a blast of air, and a dampener prevents air turbulence from interfering with the film experience during quiet scenes. Simplicity of use was also a key part of the project. Electronic Living’s team said, “The room would need to fully function from both iPhone and iPad for simplicity — and also mimic the operation of all other zones in the home.”

Clever Association was approached by a client who was looking to refurbish their large, detached property and include a cinema and gaming room in a specifically built basement in the modern “wing.” This client and his family are avid moviegoers who were looking to replicate that experience in a newly built part of their home. They also wanted access to AirPlay music and video content from their portable devices, as well as access to a movie server and Apple TV for movie rentals. Clever Association worked closely with the interior designer to select fabrics for the acoustic panels, leather for the seats, and drawing an AutoCAD design for the custom carpet. The carpet lightens toward the extremities of the room, for both aesthetic and low-light navigation A fantastic lighting purposes, so it was critical that the carpet was scheme that the correct dimensions.

The family asked for a total of eight seats and expressed an interest in them being motorized. Clever Association demonstrated various options, and it was determined that the motorized recliner was required, but that the integrator should pre-wire for D-Box, in case the seating is upgraded in the future. The client can now enjoy a cinema room that equals that of their local multiplex. Clever Association exceeded their expectations and delivered this project within the client’s budget.

The “Playhouse” was already under construction when DC Home Systems got the call for a dedicated home theater in the 15,000-square-foot structure built for entertainment — and the room presented a great many challenges. First, the owner had to be educated about the gear needed for the 1,200-square-foot cinema. Next, the home’s design called for windows in the room housing the theater, so true blackout shades were needed. Then, the homeowner spec’d a bar and countertop that not only presented acoustical issues, but demanded creative solutions when it came to speaker placement. Custom surrounds from Triad Speakers proved to be the solution.

This theater also picked up a CEDIA Global Award

The rack room was especially small for the gear needed — and demanded cable management so elegant that one judge said he was “blown away.” One more wrinkle: The theater sits directly beneath a basketball court, which meant that the vertical supports carrying the load of the court needed to be replaced with massive steel beams — a requirement that affected screen sizing and presented projector light path issues. As if that didn’t cause enough isolation issues, the integrators also had to contend with a bowling alley on the other side of the theater’s entry doors. Lastly, the client is a fan of stargazing — and the star-field ceiling is the largest that the manufacturer, Kinetics, had ever produced: 1,000-square-feet.

The room’s big: 60 square meters — and the client wanted it literally packed to the rafters with a system designed to impress those familiar with an IMAX experience. This room demanded extensive absorption and diffusion solutions — along with James Loudspeakers that boast a sensitivity of 103dB. The sound absorption is blended with transparent speaker coverings so that the speaker arrays are camouflaged. A custom 237" screen envelops the viewer in imagery as massive subwoofers round out the sonic experience. The Shanghai crew stated that the subwoofers “sound as powerful as any commercial cinema, with the highest sound pressure levels exceeding 105dB.” As the project progressed, the client opted for a somewhat less expensive projector than

the integration firm had recommended.

Xilica XP-4080 digital audio processor

Careful calibration was needed, as well as ensuring that the homeowner would be able to upgrade the projector in the future. The firm also anticipated an eventual upgrade in the audio system, so the room includes extra wiring for future additions that will make the room ready for a variety of immersive audio formats. The room is cooled via a dedicated air conditioning unit, and the integration firm tested no less than twenty AC devices before settling on the one that emitted the least amount of noise.

This winning whole-home integration was an upgrade, retrofitting a house whose systems were 10 years old. Those upgrades included distributed audio and 4K video — and consistent functionality across eight different types of user interfaces. The main layout of the system is a “Quick Pick” feature designed by Atlantic Control Technologies’ in-house Crestron programmer that matched precisely the client’s specifications. This allows the user to pick up any device in the home and use it in the same way as any other. Also included in the home’s systems are streaming audio via Autonomic (and local room inputs), an outdoor audio system utilizing Sonance Sonarray, a pool Pentair system (complete with Crestron-controlled

heater, lights, and fountain feature), Lutron lighting and shades, a Panasonic telephone system (including door phone cameras), and an HD IP security camera system. One of the most impressive things about this job: It brilliantly illustrates how a retrofit can be done efficiently when a home was previously wired with future upgrades in mind. As for the challenges presented by the project: Atlantic Control Technologies had to make doubly sure that the entire signal path in the home was 4K-compatible. Extensive and precise documentation coupled with solid rack work sealed the win for Atlantic Control Technologies.

In addition to audio, video, and networking capabilities, Digital Residence also integrated lighting, fans, security, CCTV systems, and data storage. Outdoor spaces are also part of the project — a custom drop-down device that lowers a television from the ceiling porch struck the judges as, quote, “terrific and carefully designed.” Some of the automation events in the design include: - External lighting that comes on at sunset — and then shuts down at 10 p.m. - Sensors in hallways that turn ceiling and wall lights on from sunset to 7 p.m. — and then only turn on wall lights from 7 p.m. to sunrise. - Sensors in all bathrooms that ensure lighting is always on when required. - Controls ensuring all lighting, fans, and AV is turned off when the security system is triggered. Integrating this 22,000-square-foot dwelling was a three-year project for Home Concepts. During that time, a new structure was also added to the property. The integrator solved control issues in the two structures by seamlessly linking the separate systems that shared all the home’s media sources — while simultaneously revising the plan as new technologies were introduced. This client also uses the space as a home office, and demanded robust Wi-Fi throughout — even with thick concrete walls in the home and garage. Those walls and their sleek modern design also presented acoustical challenges in many audio zones. The judges were impressed with the mechanical heart of this winner: the climate controls, the racks, and so on. This integration project also included something really fun for

The home’s systems include 18 separate audio zones driven by six sources, and, “The video is run through an Atlona 6x6 HDMI over HDBaseT, which distributes the four video signals to the six HDTV locations,” according to the firm. The home theater features 3D audio and an Epson laser projector coupled with a 16:9 screen. Intercom systems, gate control, lighting, security, and HVAC systems integration are just some of the other features Home Concepts handled for this beauty.

Some of what convinced the judges to hand the trophy to Look & Listen was the incredible attention to detail: Parts of the project were produced exclusively to match the visual aspects of Lutron white glass lighting keypads and ensure a consistent look and feel across the interior of the property.

The needs that the integrator had to meet, according to Look & Listen: “The client’s [directive] was to create a home that ‘lives’ the way his family does. He envisioned a unique, comfortable, and secure environment for all family members to gather and enjoy.

“High on the client’s list was security, he wanted to ensure that all family members and guests had easy and simple keyless access to the property at all times. Second was shading for privacy due to the number of windows used to capture all the views.” Additionally: “In the ground floor TV room, a custom rotating TV lift was designed to be recessed into the floor. Once the lift is fully up, if the glass doors are open, there is a second zone called ‘Pool’ where the TV will rotate to watch while swimming.”

Focusing on the AV side of things, Archimedia opted for a Savant SSP matrix to feed each TV with a variety of shared sources, including Kaleidescape, Satellite TV, Apple TV, and Blu-ray. With the media room featuring video tiling functionality, multiple sources could be displayed at once. The audio set up included Apple Airplay for phone-based and streamed content, and iTunes integrated into Savant. In addition, with the young son considering himself a good DJ, Archimedia linked the DJ console to the Savant system to allow the music to be audible throughout the property. Centralized Savant thermostats with in-room temperature sensors were installed for the HVAC system, while the lighting control came via Lutron. CCTV cameras from Roboza were installed and can be viewed through a cloud-based dedicated app for remote access, while access control was set up by integrating Mobotix with Savant. Lastly, Archimedia opted for Domotz to allow for proactive remote monitoring.

This whole-home project included a complex lighting scheme, CCTV, 15 motion sensor zones in the security system, distributed audio to nine zones and video to seven, Savant controls, a dedicated network, and an intercom system. Motorized blinds and shading, automated doors and locks, fans, water features, and a broad array of scenes all contribute to the success of this winning entry. The immediate challenge for Electronic Living in this retrofit: During an audit of all existing fittings and fixtures, they discovered that the home’s original cabling needed to be removed and replaced. That “smart ready” re-wire ensured that the home would be ready for any future upgrades. The team realized the challenges they faced as soon as the lighting control

76

systems were being readied for installation: “The whole home was originally wired with standard 240V lighting and electrical and with no original electrical plans. That meant that we would need to provide a complete audit of fittings and fixtures and provide a lighting plan that matched the circuit locations on site. In addition to this, all existing 240V cabling had to be removed from the entire house, and all circuits and switch locations had to be rewired … A very time-consuming and tedious task given the existing wall and ceiling structures, but well worth the final result.” The dedicated cinema room was initially a small bedroom. If solving that last challenge sounds familiar, it should: category winners Electronic Living picked up a trophy for the theater alone (pg 40-41).

With distributed audio required throughout the property, the top floor living spaces benefit from invisible Amina speakers and Velodyne in-wall subs for aesthetics and performance, while the middle floor features a 5.1 system. This home won multiple trophies, including Best Documentation, Best Dressed Rack, and a Global nod, too

Our winner is an oceanfront home that includes lighting that shines on the beach, allowing the owners and guests to surf any time they please. Inside, the sound system needs to keep the music inside so as not to wake the neighbors, while keeping the roar of the ocean outside. This huge, whole-home retrofit is notable for what the casual viewer can’t see, hear, or experience directly: state-of-the-art power management, fully active racks designed to withstand seaside conditions, and some of the best documentation CEDIA’s judges have ever seen. The man responsible for that rack, Ken Penner, was overjoyed when the team picked up their trophy at the CEDIA Awards — but wasted no time in stressing that the project was a true team effort. “It’s fantastic,” he said, then gestured at his assembled colleagues. “And I got to work with these guys on this one for two-and-a-half years.”

No prior knowledge of the system is required — it’s that detailed. CEDIA’s judges remarked that the documentation itself was a saleable asset, as valuable as any gleaming appliance or custom millwork. The judges were extremely impressed by the home’s user interface When consulting with the owner of this modern beauty, Liquid Automation heard the word “simple” repeated over and over — so, “the objective was set.” CEDIA’s panel of judges marveled at the craftsmanship and noted that the client’s primary objective was brilliantly achieved: The judges were extremely impressed by the home’s user interface. The control system includes 29 iPads that can be interchanged to work in any zone of the home. The touch panel design allows the user to navigate to any floor in the house. Once a floor is selected, a highly detailed 3D floor plan is displayed with a selection of overlays including CCTV, windows, doors, HVAC, lighting, A/V, and even a people finder.

86

The distributed audio system is a marvel unto itself: A Crestron Sonnex system delivers a whopping 26 audio sources to no less than 39 zones. As the Liquid Automation team noted, “The myriad of speakers around the house consists of in-ceiling, in-wall (visible and invisible), in-wall, and in-ceiling subwoofers, large format outdoor JBL speakers, small profile outdoor speakers, Sonance Sonarray outdoor speakers, and Pro Audio Technology speakers for the Dolby ATMOS 10-seat cinema.” Other features like a drop-down TV hidden in a ceiling to wind sensors that can close window louvers automatically make this luxurious project a clear winner in its category.

The client was familiar with home technology, as this was their third smart home. Automation was a key part of the proposal, as was the aim to consider creative ideas that could deliver the “wow” factor. Given the house includes five bedrooms, spread over 3,000 sq meters, NV Integration was expecting a traditional familystyle home. However, the client was insistent that this was a house built for entertaining, as well as being his “forever home”.

NV Integration was tasked to provide custom user interfaces for control of the system. This included integration with the wine cellars, allowing the Crestron system to track and show information regarding the wines stored. Plan layouts of each floor provide feedback as to the rooms’ statuses — showing if the lights or air conditioning have been left on, and having the ability to switch everything off (or turn on the “party mode”) at the touch of a button. These custom designs set the user interaction of this project apart from the usual “cookie cutter” approach used so often, and is exactly what the client was looking for.

This yearlong project inspired the following comments from CEDIA’s judges: “An incredible amount of patience and effort,” “incredibly clever,” and “this one really rocked.” As the team from Admit One told us, the project took the better part of the year, and the first order of business was finding equipment from the right era that was in salvageable shape. Perfect Integration Ltd

The overall objective for Perfect Integration when they took on this project, which spanned six years, was to become the first listed building in the UK to acquire a BREEAM excellent rating: BREEAM is a sustainability assessment method for planning projects, infrastructure, and buildings. The building’s monitoring system was designed to provide the client and BREEAM with the data to make informed decisions on the effectiveness of different energy sources and energy-saving solutions in each apartment. Most of the features and requirements had never been

94

applied in a residential property before. As a result, Perfect Integration tested virtually every product in the system and designed different solutions for the requirements of each individual apartment. Due to the different construction methods throughout the property, heating was done in a variety of ways, but all had to be controlled by a simple, integrated user interface with individual schedulers in each room for efficient operation. Incoming gas consumption and energy derived from solar panels was monitored and a formula applied to determine overall consumption. Harvested rain water was used to feed all the toilets and usage was tracked by the monitoring system. BREEAM is using the scheme as a case study, and a Cambridge University Ph.D. student is using the project as part of a thesis.

Liquid Automation

The winning project here was a yacht — and, in fact, Liquid Automation had outfitted it 10 years earlier. Designing a system that was more complex than their previous work gave them the chance to see if they’d truly “futureproofed” the project. Good news: Most of the original cabling was utilized, and the rack position remained the same. The ship’s systems include a robust entertainment network, distributed audio and video, security systems, and environmental controls. The latter feature is especially critical when it comes to marine integration, since humidity and seawater don’t get along terribly well with electronics. “To overcome and monitor this, we utilized separate air handlers for the audio/video racks on board, monitoring and logging this data via Crestron temperature and humidity sensors. If a rack temperature rises to 40 degrees C, a visual alert will come up on the touch panels.

Should it rise to 45 degrees C, the Crestron system will shut down equipment in the rack, alert the crew, and automatically email our support team.” In addition to the 10 zones of both audio and video entertainment and two audio-only zones (including plug-ins for the owner’s high-output “party” speakers), the team at Liquid Automation also had to integrate three navigation stations for the ship. One more issue that always presents itself when a yacht is involved: tight spaces. The judges noted that the racks were extremely well-designed, and they were impressed with “the great service loops.”

When Luxury Engineering was brought in to work on a 35-meter yacht moored in Italy, the requests were very clear. The client wanted a technology-filled environment where he could hold meetings with business partners and entertain friends. Luxury Engineering selected a Crestron system that could be controlled from both an iPad and Crestron remotes. The control interface included the ability to operate multiple zones, including six zones of satellite TV, Apple TV, a media server, 10 audio zones with AirPlay function, and a DolbyDigital multichannel sound system with a karaoke function. This function was the most difficult to integrate into the overall system, as the client wanted

each deck to be able to select its own composition. The integrator opted to transmit the AV streams through separate processors using a Crestron matrix system. For stable operation of the wireless microphones, additional transmitters were installed in technical hatches. The end result was an easily adaptable system that allows the client to scale and adjust based on the current needs — whether it’s watching one of the more than 600 movies that Luxury Engineering programmed into the media server on the main deck or in an individual cabin, hosting business presentations that can be viewed on one of the multiple plasma panels, or holding a karaoke competition.

The proposal that Mosaic Audio & Visual received for this multi-dwelling unit was for a fully integrated Building Management System (BMS), lighting control, and distributed audio. There was to be no “wall acne” in this sophisticated Soho building, and the system needed to provide intuitive control of the property for the occupier. Space was scarce, so careful consideration was required for the racks and KNX panels, with particular attention on minimizing the sizes of the panels. Gira G1 touchscreens, keypads, and the app were installed in each apartment to provide temperature control, BMS, and door entry communication, while A nicely presented Control4 remotes whole house system control the AV system.

The user interface on the Gira app passed the “guest test,” ensuring that any guest accessing the property could use the system without instructions. Motion and brightness sensors were placed in all areas to activate the lighting and audio, which provides occupants with the option to have music follow them as they move through the apartment. Mosiac Audio & Visual put great emphasis on the aesthetics, which shines through, as the technology has been hidden so well that you really have to search for it.

As is the case with many projects of this scale, “lighting” is more than modern LED fixtures — the design must work seamlessly with the other aspects of the home automation. Thirty-seven motorized shades are part of the system, as are subsystems that control devices such as bathroom fans and spa temperature. The end result needed to deliver not only drama, but also comfort and security — ease of use is also something this project accomplishes in masterful fashion. ZIO Group shared all the automation events in this installation. Some highlights: Lighting schedules are configured to turn all exterior lighting on and off based on a combination of astronomical time clock events and absolute times. Variables are used to allow override for special events and vacation modes, without normal time clock interruptions. All shades on the rear sunset-facing side of the home are closed one hour before sunset and are returned to their prior position after sunset. All bath fans have a timer that ensures the fan stays running for five minutes after the lights in the bathroom are turned off.

The owner of this theater needs to review the commercials and films his media company produces, so he asked for a dedicated cinema near his office. Building a theater in a business center required careful sound isolation, as well as adapting the air conditioning that was pumped into the room.

The theater area had been previously serviced by one very loud unit, so Zene Private Theater opted for three smaller AC units that lowered the noise floor considerably. Other concerns: no listener’s ears could be closer than a full meter to any room boundary, and although three rows of seating would’ve been ideal for the space, the client A dedicated insisted theater in an office on four.

building meant sound isolation was critical

The cinema is calibrated to exacting standards, and to achieve the necessary isolation, Zene brought in an acoustical consultant. New walls, a floating floor, and a suspended ceiling all help keep the room from bothering any adjacent offices. As the Zene team put it: “We hired a professional acoustical consultant to build a new room inside the original room. The new walls were built above the floating floor without touching the original concrete walls and the ceiling is suspended. We also installed double doors to increase the sound isolation. We spent a lot time on the project management to check all the structure details and make sure there were no sound leakage.”

When Clever Association was approached about integrating an elite show jumping facility that would rival the finest in Europe, there were several key considerations that would ensure that both staff and visitors would have the best possible on-site experience. Clever Association worked incredibly closely with the architect and building contractor to make sure all routes were considered in the proposed AutoCAD duct layout plans. Once those plans were finalized, duct-grade multi-mode fiber-optic bundles were installed through the ducts to link the buildings across the expansive property. To handle the Wi-Fi needs, the integrator utilized Cisco managed Gigabit Ethernet switches in each of the main buildings, acting as distribution points to locally hardwired equipment, including 10 Ruckus Wi-Fi access points. A total of nine audio zones were connected with a mix of HEOS By Denon for the working spaces and Bowers & Wilkins weatherproof monitors for the stables and the arena. Televisions were installed in four key areas with A system that is user a centralized Sky+HD friendly for all staff satellite receiver.

The showroom walks customers through several price points when it comes to home theater, from true reference-quality audio and images to demonstrating how a home theater can match the aesthetic of the rest of a home, as well as an “entry-level” system. Zene breaks it down further: “The most

It has three installed systems. With the understanding that technology is just one part of a wider project, emphasis was also placed on the architecture and design of the showroom. At the same time, it was important to showcase the solutions and functionalities that Henri offers, so these elements had to come together into one. The fully functional apartment consists of a living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, and office space, and features lighting and blind control, security, HVAC, and an AV system that includes in-ceiling, invisible, flush-mounted, bookshelf, and waterproof speakers, and multiple televisions, a projector, and a mirror TV in the bathroom. Various controls systems are placed around the apartment. The end goal was for customers to discover and fully experience living in an integrated home. Knowing that this can’t be accomplished in just an hour, the integrator hands customers the keys and invites them to stay in the apartment to truly enjoy this way of life.

The night of September 6, 2017, was a big one for the team at Land & Sea Entertainment. They crew took the stage at the CEDIA Awards event on the deck of the USS Midway not once, but for a total of three trophies: Best Integrated Home, Level IV; Best Documentation; and Best Dressed Rack. What’s perhaps the sweetest part of Land & Sea’s trifecta? They won the awards on their home turf — the firm’s based in San Diego. The trophies that the team won on that warm night in September reflected twoand-half years of painstaking work on a seaside retreat on the California coast. CEDIA’S panel of judges had a single word to describe the complex-yetelegant racks that sit at the beating heart of Zene’s Beijing showroom. “Artful.” Those racks control gear that covers over 12,000 square feet of showroom space on four floors. They feed a “living room” complete with media center, a VR demo room, a karaoke demo room, and three dedicated cinemas.

Complex-yetelegant racks that sit at the beating heart of this showroom.

The cinemas represent price points, from entry-level to the kind of high-end, aspirational reference theaters with 3D audio. The “entry-level” theater room has no less than three installed systems for a potential client to experience, and the speaker packages offered by Zene break those price points down even further. Completed in a mere five months at a cost of $1 million U.S. dollars, the showroom also demonstrates to their customers Zene’s attention to detail behind the scenes — and the racks that power this unique sales concept helped the firm win a separate trophy for Best Showroom.

// PROJECT

It’s only fitting that this particular project won a CEDIA trophy for Best Documentation – after all, its other wins include Best Integrated Home, Level IV; Best Dressed Rack; and the Global CEDIA Award for Integrated Home. Simply put, this project is the “Best of the Best” in nearly every category. This project’s systems are incredibly complex, and the pages and pages Land & Sea created for the home are painstaking and precise. The lighting from the front of the home illuminates the beach for surfing after dark, and the home’s interior is packed

134

with complex lighting, audio, video, and other systems that required careful power management, precise cable management, and a set of documents that were more extensive and useful than our panel of judges had ever seen. One judge noted that the documentation could be included in a potential realtor’s pitch for the home right alongside the high-end fixtures: “Anyone could walk in and work on the system.” For more on this project, see page 83, 129 and 142.

Total Immersion // INSTALLER

Liquid Automation

To design a room in a newly constructed home that delivered spectacular video, endless comfort, and total 3D audio immersion, Liquid Automation built a “space for escape” in conjunction with the wizards at Wavetrain Cinemas. A great deal of room isolation went into the project, and great care was given to the design of the room’s HVAC system. Other considerations were power conditioning and user control. Liquid Automation noted: “The cinema not only has a variety of local sources, but it is also fed off the main Crestron DigitalMedia frame,

allowing it to see all the house sources as well. If a source is currently being watched by another user, there is a notification beside the selectable source button — it is handy to know what is currently in use.” Automated masking, carefully removing even the slightest distracting rattle triggered by a sub, and isolating other appliances from the AV system made for a complex and beautiful project. Those details are thoroughly and precisely detailed in the project’s extensive documentation, something the CEDIA judging panel referred to as “an example for other integrators.”

The judges called this winner “an example for other integrators”

These 2 digital connections are physically connected for potential future use. They are logically not currently being used; audio is instead taken from the associated HDMI connection. These connections would allow the AVR to still receive Bitstream audio even when the HDMI connections are not transmitting Bitstream. (This may be necessary in future if the audio breakout function on the Video Matrix is used, as this Matrix does not support downmixing.)

The judges were particularly impressed with this detail, commenting how easily the project could be taken over by another contractor if needed. The attention to detail shown on a relatively small project — compared to where this quality of documentation is normally seen — is what drove the judges to award BrownHen Solutions over some of the other impressive documentation packs.

We initially planned to use a dedicated managed PoE switch for the outside security cameras and the Video Door Station however the security cameras were deferred for a subsequent phase. We explained the security risks associated with wired connections located externally and the customer was happy to accept the risks associated with connecting the Video Door Station to the same unmanaged PoE switch as the WAPs etc. The customer also agreed it was unnecessary to have this switch (or any future switch with external data connections) on its own circuit breaker (in case of the network cable connecting to high voltage by a potential saboteur).

fun, yet practical and multi-functional media room. The overall aesthetic of the room, audio and video calibration, and personal touches — like the height-

variable coffee table that can double as a dining table during movie watching — made this project stand out from other regional winners. The judges were particularly impressed with the attention to detail on specifics such as the acoustic treatment and the precise calibration of the speakers behind it. Not only were the judges impressed by this project, but so was the client — who has been enjoying the room ever since. Find out more about this project on page 24, as Synergy Technology was also successful in the Best Media Room £80,000 and over category.

BEST HOME CINEMA

// TITLE

The Playhouse Theater // COMPANY

DC Home Systems This project was a case study in solving challenges. First, imagine isolating a home cinema from both a basketball court and fully functioning bowling lanes. Next, find solutions for the windows that the client wanted to remain in the space. After solving those issues, find proper speaker placement and ensure that the room’s properly calibrated while working around a bar and countertop. The 1,200-square-foot theater, the winner of Best Home Cinema, Level IV (Americas/Asia Pacific region, page 44) is part of a larger project — this theater’s just one element of a large private entertainment complex called “The Playhouse,” that won a Best Special Project trophy for DC Home Systems in the Americas/Asia Pacific region (page 112).

does everything from lighting up the beach for evening surfing to cutting the homeowner’s electric bills, picked up wins for Best Integrated Home (Level IV), Best Documentation, and Best Dressed Rack awards in its region before winning the Global Prize. The Americas/Asia Pacific team of judges remarked that the documentation was as critical a component of the home as any bit of hardware: “Anyone could walk in and work on the system.” As for the electronic heart of the home itself, “It’s a completely unique and elegant rack system — just beautifully done.” Another compliment: “It’s a shame we don’t give an award for power management.” For more details of Land & Sea Entertainment's see page 82, as this was successful in the Best Integrated Home Level IV (Americas): $450,000 and over.
