Where the Two Oceans Merge Yusuf Campbell
To Him belong the Keys of the Systems of the heavens and the earth. As for those who rejected the signs of God, it is they who will be the ˹true˺ losers. Learning one system is the same as learning one thousand systems. This is because, like no one person is totally unique, no one system is totally unique.
They wish to extinguish Allah’s light1 with their mouths, but Allah will only allow His light to be perfected, even to the dismay of the disbelievers. He is the One Who has sent His Messenger with ˹true˺ guidance and the System of Truth, making it prevail over all other systems, even to the dismay of the polytheists.
Say, ˹O Prophet,˺ “If the ocean were ink for ˹writing˺ the Words of my Lord, it would certainly run out before the Words of my Lord were finished, even if we refilled it with its equal.” ‘Knowing’ Truth and ‘tasting’ Truth are not the same! Unless and until you fly on the wings of time, swim in the ocean of time, lose consciousness of time in a timeless world, “And remember when Moses said: I will not give up traveling until I reach the point where the two oceans merge, even if I must travel for ages.”
you have not yet ‘tasted’ Truth!
“I take an oath by time When the sun has set,
When darkness comes And the stars have met,
Time will slow And the night grows bold,
The journey continues As the moon unfolds,
With the Book in hand In the coming Age,
You will certainly travel From stage to stage.”
The
Structure and
Key for learning all Things (Analysis) In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to God, the Lord of all creation, the Originator of Mercy, the Most Merciful. (Know God and praise Him.)
Sovereign of the Day of Judgement. (We have a spiritual and physical destination.)
You alone we worship, and You alone we turn to for help. (This is sublime speech)
Guide us to the Straight Path: (True Guidance is both spiritual and physical and is from God)
the path of those You have blessed; not of those who have incurred Your wrath; nor of those who have gone astray. (The Originator of Mercy, the Most Merciful, is about to present stories and examples whereby we can derive An explanation of all things.)
Allah! There is none ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him, the Ever-Living, All-Sustaining.
Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him.
To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth.
Who could possibly intercede with Him without His permission?
He ˹fully˺ knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them,
but no one can grasp any of His knowledge —except what He wills ˹to reveal˺.
His Throne encompasses the heavens and the earth,
and the preservation of both does not tire Him.
For He is the Sublime, the Almighty.
Spiritual Internal: Diseases of the Soul And I do not seek to free myself from blame, for indeed the soul is ever inclined towards evil, except those shown mercy by my Lord. Surely my Lord is AllForgiving, Most Merciful.”
And do not obsess over what Allah has given some of you over others. Men will be rewarded according to their deeds and women ˹equally˺ according to theirs. Rather, ask Allah for His bounties. Surely, Allah has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of all things.
Obsession
And hasten towards forgiveness from your Lord and a Paradise as vast as the heavens and the earth, prepared for those mindful ˹of Allah˺. ˹They are˺ those who donate in prosperity and adversity, control their anger, and pardon others. And Allah loves the good-doers.
Anger
Is there a sickness in their hearts?
Depression And Allah will deliver those who were mindful ˹of Him˺ to their place of ˹ultimate˺ triumph. No evil will touch them, nor will they be depressed.
Fear That ˹warning˺ was only ˹from˺ Satan, trying to prompt you to fear his followers. So do not fear them; fear Me if you are ˹true˺ believers.
Successful indeed is the one who purifies their soul, and doomed is the one who corrupts it!
Those who sincerely believe and whose hearts find comfort in the remembrance of Allah. Surely in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find comfort.
Say: “Verily, my prayer, my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for the Lord God, the Lord of All Creation.”
Spiritual external Righteousness is not in turning your faces towards the east or the west. Rather, the righteous are those who sincerely believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Books, and the prophets; who give voluntary charity out of their cherished wealth to relatives, orphans, the poor, ˹needy˺ travelers, beggars, and for freeing captives; who establish prayer, pay obligatory charity, and keep the pledges they make; and who are patient in times of suffering, adversity, and in ˹the heat of˺ battle. It is they who are true ˹in faith˺, and it is they who are mindful ˹of Allah˺.
Sincerity
Charity
O believers! Fasting is prescribed for you—as it was for those before you1—so perhaps you will become mindful ˹of Allah˺.
Fasting
Commitment to˺ pilgrimage is made in appointed months.1 Whoever commits to ˹performing˺ pilgrimage, let them stay away from intimate relations, foul language, and arguments during pilgrimage. Whatever good you do, Allah ˹fully˺ knows of it. Take ˹necessary˺ provisions ˹for the journey˺—surely the best provision is righteousness. And be mindful of Me, O people of reason!
Travel Prayer O believers! When you rise for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of ˹full˺ impurity,1 then take a full bath. But if you are ill, on a journey, or have relieved yourselves, or have been intimate with your wives and cannot find water, then purify yourselves with clean earth by wiping your faces and hands.2 It is not Allah’s Will to burden you, but to purify you and complete His favor upon you, so perhaps you will be grateful.
Say: “Verily, my prayer, my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for the Lord God, the Lord of All Creation.”
Physical external Family
O humanity! Indeed, We created you from a male and a female, and made you into peoples and tribes so that you may ˹get to˺ know one another. Surely the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous among you. Allah is truly All-Knowing, All-Aware.
Transportation
It is Allah Who made cattle for you so that you may ride some and eat others. Also, you find in them ˹other˺ benefits.1 And by means of them you may reach destinations you desire. And you are carried upon ˹some of˺ them and upon ships.
We revealed to Moses and his brother, “Appoint houses for your people in Egypt. Turn these houses into places of worship, establish prayer, and give good news to the believers!”
Housing
Energy He is the One˺ Who gives you fire from green trees, and—behold!—you kindle ˹fire˺ from them.
They ask you, ˹O Prophet,˺ what is permissible for them ˹to eat˺. Say, “What is good and lawful. Also, what is caught by your hunting animals and birds of prey which you have trained as instructed by Food Allah. So, eat what they catch for you, but mention the Name of Allah over it ˹first˺.” And be mindful of Allah. Surely Allah is swift in reckoning. Today all good, pure foods have been made lawful for you. Similarly, the food of the People of the Book1 is permissible for you and yours is permissible for them. And ˹permissible for you in marriage˺ are chaste believing women as well as chaste women of those given the Scripture before you—as long as you pay them their dowries in wedlock, neither fornicating nor taking them as mistresses. And whoever rejects the faith, all their good deeds will be void ˹in this life˺ and in the Hereafter they will be among the losers.
Physical internal And so, We awakened them so that they might question one another. One of them exclaimed, “How long have you remained ˹asleep˺?” Some replied, “Perhaps a day, or part of a day.” They said ˹to one another˺, “Your Lord knows best how long you have remained. So, send one of you with these silver coins of yours to the city, and let him find which food is the purest, and then bring you provisions from it. Let him be ˹exceptionally˺ cautious, and do not let him give you away.
Phlegm And there is certainly a lesson for you in cattle: We give you to drink of what is in their bellies, from between digested food and blood: pure milk, pleasant to drink.1 And from the fruits of palm trees and grapevines you derive intoxicants1 as well as wholesome provision. Surely in this is a sign for those who understand.
Black Bile Indeed, the virtuous will have a drink flavored with camphor
And ˹remember˺ when you said, “O Moses! We cannot endure the same meal ˹every day˺. So ˹just˺ call upon your Lord on our behalf, He will bring forth for us some of what the earth produces of herbs, cucumbers, garlic, lentils, and onions.”
Yellow Bile And they will be given a drink flavored with ginger
Blood And your Lord inspired the bees: “Make ˹your˺ homes in the mountains, the trees, and in what people construct, and feed from ˹the flower of˺ any fruit ˹you please˺ and follow the ways your Lord has made easy for you.” From their bellies comes forth liquid of varying colors, in which there is healing for people. Surely in this is a sign for those who reflect. O Children of Adam! Dress properly whenever you are at worship. Eat and drink, but do not waste. Surely, He does not like the wasteful.
Do the disbelievers not realize that the heavens and earth were ˹once˺ one mass then We split them apart? And We created from water every living thing. Will they not then believe?
Spiritual Harmony No calamity ˹or blessing˺ occurs on earth or in yourselves without being ˹written˺ in a Record before We bring it into being. This is certainly easy for Allah. ˹We let you know this˺ so that you neither obsess over what you have missed nor boast over what He has granted you. For Allah does not like whoever is arrogant, boastful—those who are stingy and promote stinginess among people. And whoever turns away ˹should know that˺ Allah ˹alone˺ is truly the Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy. Sincerity
Whatever ˹pleasure˺ you have been given is ˹no more than a fleeting˺ enjoyment of this worldly life. But what is with Allah is far better and more lasting for those who sincerely believe and put their trust in their Lord; who avoid major sins and shameful deeds and forgive when angered; who respond to their Lord, establish prayer, conduct their affairs by mutual consultation, and donate from what We have provided for them; and who enforce justice when wronged.
Charity
Fasting
Indeed, those who sincerely believe, do good, establish prayer, and pay obligatory charity will receive their reward from their Lord, and there will be no fear for them, nor will they be depressed.
Prayer
Travel
Say: “Verily, my prayer, my sacrifice, my living, and my dying are for the Lord God, the Lord of All Creation.”
Have they not travelled throughout the land so their hearts may reason, and their ears may listen? Indeed, it is not the eyes that are blind, but it is the hearts in the chests that grow blind.
Physical Harmony
O humanity! Be mindful of your Lord Who created you from a single soul, and from it He created its mate, and through both He spread countless men and women. And be mindful of Allah—in Whose Name you appeal to one another—and ˹honor˺ family ties. Surely Allah is ever Watchful over you. Family
Energy
And ˹make him˺ a messenger to the Children of Israel ˹to proclaim,˺ ‘I have come to you with a sign from your Lord: I will make for you a bird from clay, breathe into it, it will become a ˹real˺ bird—by Food and Allah’s Will. I will heal the blind and the leper and raise the dead to life—by Allah’s Will. And I will prophesize what you eat and store in your houses. Surely in this is a sign for you if you ˹truly˺ believe.
Housing Transportation They ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about the phases of the moon. Say, “They are a means for people to determine time and pilgrimage.” Righteousness is not in entering your houses from the back doors. Rather, righteousness is to be mindful ˹of Allah˺. So, enter your homes through their ˹proper˺ doors and be mindful of Allah so you may be successful.
Those who believe and whose hearts find comfort in the remembrance of Allah. Surely in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find comfort
Two Oceans in balance By the ˹Passage of˺ Time! Surely humanity is in ˹grave˺ loss, except those who Sincerely have Spiritual Faith, perform Physical Righteous Deeds,
urge each other to stand for Truth, and urge each other to Perseverance.
When My servants ask you ˹O Prophet˺ about Me: I am truly near to them. I respond to one’s prayer when they call upon Me. So let them respond ˹with obedience˺ to Me and believe in Me, perhaps they will be guided ˹to the Right Way˺.
On that Day you will see believing men and women with their Light shining ahead of them and on their right. ˹They will be told,˺ “Today you have good news of Gardens, under which rivers flow, ˹for you˺ to stay in forever. This is ˹truly˺ the ultimate triumph.”
Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. His light1 is like a niche in which there is a lamp, the lamp is in a crystal,
the crystal is like a shining star, lit from ˹the oil of˺ a blessed olive tree, ˹located˺ neither to the east nor the west,2 whose oil would almost glow, even without being touched by fire.
Light upon light! Allah guides whoever He wills to His light. And Allah sets forth parables for humanity. For Allah has ˹perfect˺ knowledge of all things. ˹That light shines˺ through houses ˹of worship˺ which Allah has ordered to be raised, and where His Name is mentioned. He is glorified there morning and evening by men1 who are not distracted—either by
buying or selling—from Allah’s remembrance, or performing prayer, or giving charity. They fear a Day when hearts and eyes will tremble, ˹hoping˺ that Allah may reward them according to the best of their deeds and increase them out of His grace. And Allah provides for whoever He wills without limit. --
