A scenario in Philly
There are approximately 200,000 Muslims in Philly. Let’s say a little more than a third of them are working adults. That’s 70,000 people who can donate $10 a month. That would be a total of $700,000 a month collected, initially. For what purpose would this money be used? It is to be strictly used to provide affordable housing for families. Married couples with children and income will have priority. The median price of a three bedroom house is $155,000. In the first month four houses can be purchased, paid in full. Each family that moves into a house pays $300 a month and taxes. The $300 collected from families go back into the collection. Month 1
Month 2
Month 3
Etc.
$700,000 4 houses
$700,000 + 1,200 8 houses
$700,000 + 2,400 12 houses
…..
After one year 50 families would have affordable housing. After one year the monthly collection increases to $844,000. All for less than the amount you spend on coffee and soda each month. All the math and vocabulary used I learned in elementary school. Our problem is not a quantity problem. We have the people. We have the money. We have the time. We have the need. What we don’t have is leadership that is focused on the 5 pillars. The five pillars of society are Family, Food, Housing, Energy, & Trans. We have a severe quality problem. We need leadership and institutions focused on the important issues. Now we know the problem. Let’s fix it.
