HERBERT Herbert Lee Gums was born on August 17, 1950 to Louis Gums Sr. and the former Geraldine Rideaux in Sour Lake, Texas. After briefly attending school in Nome, Texas, he moved to Galveston, Texas. Upon graduation from Ball High School (Class of 1969), Herbert voluntarily enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. While serving in the United States Marine Corps, he received the following decorations, medals, badges, commendations, citations, and campaign ribbons: National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Meritorious Mast, Expert Riffle Shooting Badge, and Marksman Pistol Shooting Badge. He was honorably discharged on July 25, 1975 as a Sergeant (E-5). In 1974, Herbert Gums married his junior high school sweetheart, Emma Jones. To this union, they were blessed with three beautiful children: Derrick, LaShonda, and Tiffanie. His devotion to his wife and their children has help shaped the lives of his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In 1981, Herbert joined the Galveston Fire Department (this was his favorite job). At the Fire Department, he worked alongside his best friend, Herbert Franklin and close friend, Gilbert Robinson. In 1991, he became employed with LyondellBassell. He worked there for over 25 years. Herbert was baptized at an early age at Jerusalem Baptist Church by the late Reverend A. S. Johnson. Upon moving to Houston, he joined Antioch Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Nathan Johnson. He loved serving the Lord and serving others as an usher in the house of the Lord. On Saturday, September 30, 2017, Herbert was called home to be with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his father, Louis Gums, Sr., his mother, Geraldine Gums, and his brother, Louis Gums, Jr. Herbert’s memories will forever be cherished by those he loved and those who truly loved him: his lovely devoted wife, Emma Jean Gums; son, Derrick Dwight Jackson; daughters, LaShonda Shenette Grant (David) and Tiffanie Denise Phillips; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his pride and joy: Cedric Dequency Phillips, Jr. (grandson) and Kyla Denise Phillips (granddaughter); brother, Elton Ray Gums; sister, Barbara Jean Rivers; two aunts, Myrtle May Rideaux and Mercie Lee Mayberry; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

A Tribute to MY LOVE You were my best friend, my soul-mate, my confidant and my rock. I couldn’t have asked for a better husband and partner in life. You gave your all and asked for very little. You have always put others first before yourself, always working and providing for your family. I knew for sure that the Lord blessed us with a marriage of 43 years. Meeting you at the age of 14 and you at 16, the Lord has blessed us with over 50 years together. I truly miss you; my life is half empty. I feel like I have lost a part of me. I will always cherish the memories we have made together and love you forever. Rest now my love, Your Wife forever
Jean
A Tribute to DADDY
Dear Daddy, Every time I think of you my heart fills with pride. You were an honorable man, protector, provider and a great father. You gave me life and loved me unconditionally. Here’s a toast to you Daddy, “Job Well Done.” I love you Daddy.

Love,
Dear Dad, If I could write a story It would be the greatest ever told Of a kind and loving father Who had a heart of gold. I could write a million pages But still be unable to say Just how much I love and miss you Every single day. I will remember all you taught me I’m hurt, but won’t be sad Because you’ll send me down the answers And you’ll always be My Dad. With Unconditional Love, Your son
Derrick
September 30, 2017 is a date that is engrained in my mind forever. It was the day that the angel wrote my father Herbert Gums name in the book of life. I was so hurt and angry that he left us, so soon. Not realizing, all along God (while here on earth) you were preparing for this day. My father wasn’t raised by his Dad. But, he turned out to be one of the greatest men ever to grace this earth. My Dad was a loving and supportive father. I couldn’t have asked you to bless me with anyone better. I had 36 years with my father and I wasn’t satisfied. I wanted more time God! I realize I took life for granted and made future plans, not realizing my father days were decreasing rapidly. God, if I can trade all of the riches in the world for just a day or a moment with my Dad, I’ll do it in a heartbeat! But, I know I can’t. Well, God since I can’t get my Dad back; can you please allow my Dad to hear that I love him always and that I miss him so much. (Dad while you’re listening) I want you to know that I will never forget all of the life lessons you taught me. I will make you proud of me. I will continue your legacy. And we will come together as a family and take care of Mom. Before you go Dad-visit with me as often as you can. I know I can’t see nor hear you, but I would love to talk with you. Well Dad, now it’s time to say goodbye for now. I can’t join you because God is still preparing me and I have to take care of Mom and Kyla and Jr. Soon I too will hear those beautiful words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” And then Dad, we can celebrate together for eternity. Love Always, Your Daughter
Tiffanie
A Tribute to PAPA
Dear Papa, You were no ordinary Grandpa. You were special to me. You were a Marine and a Fire Fighter. Papa you were a brave and very smart man. I’m so sad you’re gone. I have so many questions about heaven. How is God? Do you sleep? What does your crown look like? I have many more questions for you about heaven but I don’t want to spoil it. Love Always,
Kyla Dear Papa, You were a very cool grandfather. You have been there for me since birth and you will be missed. Papa, I have some questions. Is God tall? What do your wings look like? Have you told Big Mama about Kayla and I? I have so many questions about heaven. I hope to see you one day, Papa. Love your Grandson,
Cedric
