5. OUR DIVERSE WORLD

Look around your classroom. Is there anyone who is exactly the same as you?

Imagine a world where everyone looks the same… Do you think this world is interesting? Boring? Exciting? Strange?

Some things make us similar to other people, but we are all different. Things that make us special too. Our world is diverse.

It is important to respect people’s differences. We can be different in many ways:

 The colour of our hair, eyes and skin.

 Our culture or religion.

 Who is in our family.

Things we like, food we eat, sports we do, etc.

Activities time!

1. We are going to make a video telling: Three things that make you different, three things that make you special, three things that make you similar to someone, what you like about yourselfand others.

2. Imagine that you were born different, in another place and with another aspect. Invent another you and say in what way you think you would be different. Use magazines, cut and paste in your notebook.

3. Investigate about different cultures and religions.

4. How can families be? Make a poster and do a presentation.

Our feelings and emotions are part of our mental health. They can affect our actions, relationships with other people and how we behave.

How do you think the childrenin thepictures are feeling?

Some feelings are positive and others are negative. Try to classify the following feelings:

Calm Angry Excited Surprised Tired Bored Disappointed

Sad Anxious Confused Jealous Scared Happy Nostalgic

Sometimes we feel different emotions at the same time. Sometimes different people have different emotions about the same situation. For example, when your football team loses a match, maybe you feel sad and your teammate too. Or maybe he feels angry.

It is important to respect other people’s feelings and to be kind.

What can wedo when wehave negative emotions?

7. HABITS FOR ILLNESSES PREVENTION

We can speak about two types of health:

 Physical health

 Mental health

If we have a physical disease our body does not work properly and we feel bad. When we have a mental disorder we do not feel good with ourselves. We can find different types of diseases like infections, diseases caused by accidents, bad habits...

7.1. ILLNESSES PREVENTION

To avoid some diseases:

 Healthy diet: eating a great variety of foods.

 Eat most vegetables and fruits and eat in small amounts sugars, oils and fats.

 Hygiene habits: have a good personal hygiene.

 Exercise, posture and rest.

 Avoid accidents: wear a helmet, fasten your seatbelt, take care with knives, hot oil, do not play near a swimming pool...

 Go to the doctor and dentist: to control how our health is.

Do not smoke and avoid alcohol and drugs: they can produce dangerous physical and mental disorders.

 Protect your skin with sun cream.

 Limit screen time: eye fatigue, neckpain...

When do people have vaccinations? What machines do you know to help prevent or cure illnesses? Have you got a first-aid kit at home or at school?

DISCOVERIES AND INVENTIONS

Scientists have made discoveries and invented machines that help people to prevent and cure illnesses:

 Penicillin and antibiotics help to cure infections caused by bacteria.

 Vaccinations help to prevent illnesses such as tetanus caused by viruses.

 The X-ray machine allows doctors to see if bones are damaged.

 The ultrasound machine allows doctors to see inside our bodies, for example, to observe a baby.

FIRST AID

When someone is bleeding, press down on the cut with a soft cloth. Clean the cut to prevent infection.

When someone has a burn, cool it under cold water.

When someone is choking, hit them on theback.

If someone is badly hurt, tell an adult or call the emergency services.

LET’S INVESTIGATE!

What first-aid supplies do you need to clean a small cut?

What new medications can help us when we are ill?

What vaccines can help stop us from getting ill?

What new machines can doctors use?

If you see someone having an asthma attack, what should you do?
