Tyson Fury

Who Is The Gypsy King?

Tyson Fury, two-time world Heavyweight Champion, recently visited Mallorca as part of his Official After Party Tour show that has been travelling around the UK. Taking place at House of Son Amar, the British fighter addressed the packed room and discussed his past, his career and his thoughts on boxing and the struggles that he has famously suffered over the years.

Tyson Fury was born on August 12th 1988, three months prematurely and weighing just one pound. It is a wonder that a child so small and born so early survived but more staggering is that Tyson now stands at 2.06 metres and towers over most of his opponents. Raised in an Anglo-Irish Traveller family, which led him to be known professionally as “The Gypsy King”, Tyson spent several years living in a caravan and left school at 10 years old to work with his brothers resurfacing roads, dealing cars and collecting scrap.

His boxing career started when he was 14 and, drawing from his family’s 200-year background of bare-knuckle fighting, went into the ring where he won his fight and showed off his “naturally gifted talent” as his former coach once said. Standing at 1.96 metres by this age, the first time Tyson stepped into the ring with his father who also had a boxing background, he broke his ribs with a single punch.

His professional boxing career launched in 2018 when he won his fight against Hungarian fighter, Bela Gyongyosi whom he defeated with a Technical Knockout in the first round. He then went on to defeat all six of his opponents in the next seven months which identified him as he serious contender within the sport.

The same year that his career started to take off, he married his wife, Paris, when he was just 20 years old and she was just 18. Their relationship has certainly stood the test of time and the couple have six children together, three boys (all named Prince) and three girls. When asked why all of his boys have the same name he replied “I’m a king and they’re princes until they earn

their rightful name”. As his career grew, Fury’s fighting style became more defined and more in keeping with his traveller roots while picking up techniques and styles from every fight.

“I was like a sponge soaking everything up. I didn’t want to be a big stiff European with my hands up above my face walking forward, I wanted to slip and slide and be a boxer like the American style,” he said when asked about his fighting style.

In 2014, Fury beat Dereck Chisora to win three minor titles but he had his heart set on another fight. At the press conference after he said: “Wladimir Klitschko, I’m coming for you baby. I’m coming.” At the time, Klitschko was the WBA, IBF, and WBO heavyweight world champion and was unbeaten in 22 fights over 11 years and was making his 19th consecutive world title defence.

In 2015, Tyson’s wish came true and it was confirmed that he would be fighting Klitschko and his antics in the build-up to the flight gained him plenty of media attention. He famously arrived at a press conference in a bright yellow Lamborghini while dressed as Batman before running around the room and insulting his opponent.

The fight was highly anticipated by boxing fans worldwide and when it came to it, against the expectations of many in the boxing world, Fury beat Klitschko in front of 55,000 people in the Esprit Arena in Düsseldorf, Germany.

After this incredible achievement, Tyson’s life turned dark and he turned to a life of drugs and alcohol.

“When I beat him, I didn’t have anything more to prove,” Fury said in an interview at the time.

“I hit the drink, heavily, on a daily basis. I hit the drugs. I was out all night partying with women of the night and not coming home. “I didn’t care about boxing, about living, I just wanted to die. I was going to have a good time doing it while I was doing it”, he added.

Over the next couple of years, Tyson’s weight became an issue and his fighting physique disappeared, the alcohol and drug abuse continued and he made a series of controversial statements that were deemed racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic. Although he has since said that none of these statements were intended to hurt anybody, his public image nose-dived and his self-esteem declined with it.

Towards the end of 2017, he suddenly realised that he had gone from Heavyweight Champion of the world to a shadow of his

former self and designed to clean his act up. He went back to training lost 112 pounds, quit cocaine, and signed a $103 million, five-fight television deal with ESPN. He also won two comeback fights. Since his meteoric comeback, Tyson has fought and won multiple fights around the world, become a mental health ambassador for those suffering from depression, and has been more hands-on with his family. He also won his second World Heavyweight title against Wilder in what was one of the most anticipated rematches following a previous draw in boxing history.

Fury has stepped out of the ring in recent years but told the crowds at House of Son Amar that he will be back so it may just be a case of watching this space and seeing what the controversial Gypsy King does next - whatever it is, he won’t be doing it quietly!

Our very own Matthew Cull was one of the lucky few that got to attend Tyson’s event at House of Son Amar. Here’s what he had to say about the event:

A pesar de ser un personaje polémica, me pareció educador, carism´tico y un “28 was followed on to the stage by his son, Tyson Fury who spoke honestly about his rise to boxing glory and fame, mental health struggles, and the weight loss from 28 stone down to 19 stone to get back to ringready fitness. Although a controversial character at times, I found Tyson to be polite, engaging and a ‘gentle giant’. Well done to Son Amar for successfully hosting such a great event.”

Tyson Fury

A pesar de ser un personaje polémica, me pareció educador, carism´tico y un “28 was followed on to the stage by his son, Tyson Fury who spoke honestly about his rise to boxing glory and fame, mental health struggles, and the weight loss from 28 stone down to 19 stone to get back to ringready fitness. Although a controversial character at times, I found Tyson to be polite, engaging and a ‘gentle giant’. Well done to Son Amar for successfully hosting such a great event.”

award recognitions means more because of that. It definitely encourages me to keep evolving”.

When Michael started recording, he says he made a conscious choice to “stop worrying about everything I could worry about. I decided I’m going to accept what I do rather than get embarrassed by it or be shy and have this inferiority complex, this imposter syndrome.”

“I finally feel like I can feel free and be proud to be a British Black man playing my music that’s slightly weird, slightly rock, slightly soul. Twenty years from now, someone like me in Muswell Hill will hear my records and think they can do any kind of music they want because I did it.”

Mad Cool, one of the premier music festivals in the world, is taking its unique brand to the south of Spain for its next festival - the Andalucía Big Festival! The three-day live music event in Malaga aims to bring together 100,000 people between 8-10 September 2022 with a variety of up-andcoming artists appearing on the same bill as international headliners Stereophonics, Muse, Rage Against the Machine and a very rare appearance from 90’s funk space cowboys Jamiroquai. With just a month and a half to go before the biggest music festival in the capital, the original choice of Sacaba Beach has now been ruled out and the organisers have started to process the municipal permits this month to move the event to the fairground at Cortijo de Torres. The new venue, on the Cortijo de Torres esplanade where circus tents are erected and the street market is set up, will not affect the capacity of the festival, according to Farruco Castroman, co-organiser of Mad Cool who says that a small part of the uniqueness of the event is perhaps lost with this change but that it was essential that safety and other

concerns raised were given priority. Legendary frontman Jay Kay of Jamiroquai headlines the Friday night as their only performance this year in Europe and shares the bill with Mercury Prize-winning and Grammy nominee for Best Rock Album, Michael Kiwanuka from Muswell Hill in London. The British-Ugandan singer/ songwriter shares his thoughts from his home in the UK:

“When I started, I used to be jealous of artists that were getting bigger because they seemed to fit in, I kept trying to fit in and it never worked. I’m not pop or soul or rock. At first, I thought it was kind of mad that I was nominated for a rock album. Now, I like it that the category doesn’t really fit because it means that I’m making my own sound, which is the hardest thing to do.” How do you feel your music fits in with the mainstream?

“A lot of artists of my generation get a big hit and try and repeat it and it just gets worse. My music is changing and getting weirder. Things I used to be terrified of before, but it’s connecting with people. Getting these

Michael Kiwanuka is the best kind of artist that delivers honest songs from the heart and true live performances of his selfpenned songs and stories that have a special place in the hearts and minds of those that enjoy his music and phenomenon. His groundbreaking song ‘You Ain’t The Problem’ took the world by storm, defiantly singing “If you don’t belong, live in the trouble” he shares the strength and selfconfidence in believing that no matter where you come from or what you’ve been through, don’t blame yourself for anything or your situation, it’s not you who are the problem. If you are doing your best and dedicate every waking hour to having faith and love in what you do, it shines through in the end.

This is one of the biggest festivals in Spain this year and, post-pandemic, we are now seeing more and more live music events across the world that bring together an eclectic mix of genres and artists that are genuinely happy to share stages and performances with each other to spread the love for live music louder than ever before.

RHOC – A Busy Summer for Hanna and Martin Kinsella

Catching up with Hanna and Martin Kinsella is always something I look forward to for every edition of Celebrity as there is always something to talk about and plenty of new and exciting projects for them to share with us. Here is what they have been up to this summer…

Chatting to me in the beautiful villa that they have rented in Santa Ponsa, Hanna and Martin look relaxed and ready for a nice long holiday after a jam-packed summer with their two beautiful children and their busy careers. Frequent visitors to the island, the couple have decided to build a house here so have decided to get the ball rolling now that the summer is coming to an end. Since we last spoke, baby Kimia is now three and a half months old and smiling away from under her long mane of dark hair and little Max is now 18 months old and running around all over the place and playing football with his Dad. Hanna has been working hard to shed her baby weight and is looking amazing.

“I have worked really hard to feel healthy since having Kimia and have completely changed my diet,” Hanna tells me. “I have lost around 8 kilos so far and have lots more energy thanks to cutting out certain foods and exercising.”

Hanna was also busy filming and the new series of Real Housewives of Cheshire is currently airing on ITV Be. This series will

be on our screens for ten weeks and follows all of your favourite Housewives as well as the newest edition to the series, Katie, who Hanna tells me is truly lovely and a welcome addition to the series.

Icy Bear Dental was launched by Hanna last year and has been a huge hit with her clients and followers. Recently, the new “At Home Whitening Kit” was launched and promises to make teeth ten times whiter in seven days. Martin is just as busy, and between seeing his patients at his clinics in the UK and in Santa Ponsa, has also launched his Dr Kinsella Skincare range with a glamorous launch party that was attended by local celebrities, influencers, editors and clients. Dr Kinsella skincare successfully bridges the gap in the market between professional, medicallybacked skincare and the glitzy brands that we all recognise. This “cosmeceutical” line of skincare products is available to purchase online and all of the information can be found on Martin’s Instagram page. Aside from the skincare line, Martin has also continued with his online hormone clinic which has gone from strength to strength

and now has a loyal following of women that rely on his expert advice to help them with their overall hormonal help. Martin also appeared on a special TV show that aired in August with some of the ladies from the Real Housewives of Cheshire to discuss menopause and how it affects women. As ever, this couple never seems to stop and keep themselves busy with their various projects so it is lovely that they have chosen to spend their downtime in Mallorca with their family and friends for the next few weeks.

Real Housewives of Cheshire airs every Monday on ITV Be and is available to catch up on the ITV Player. Martin’s clinic, ReEnhance Medicina Asthetica is located on Avenida del Rey Jaime I, 108 in Santa Ponsa and enquiries and appointments can be made by contacting info@re-enhance.com. To find out more about Dr Kinsella Skincare visit www.drkinsella.com and for everything Icy Bear Dental head to icybeardental.com. Indeed, the former politician, held the record for being both the longest serving Westminster councillor and Deputy Leader of the Council. During this time, he participated in numerous historic events and initiated many changes to the fabric of Westminster. His fascinating account of city life in central London, contains remarkable and amusing stories.

In his 36 years as a councillor, he made history becoming the youngest Lord Mayor of Westminster at 38; witnessing from his central role the complexity of Britain’s legendary protocol and pageantry. His interesting descriptions of attending State Banquets at Buckingham Palace include how his Lady Mayoress nearly dropped her heavily jewelled necklace into the royal soup. He also gives an insight into Her Majesty The Queen and the unique charisma of Nelson Mandela, who Robert co-hosted during Mandela’s historic State Visit in 1996. All illustrated with over 450 glorious photos. As Deputy Leader of Westminster, Robert worked closely with Boris Johnson who became a good friend and for 17 years as Chairman of Westminster’s Planning Committee. COCO’S DELIHEALTHY FOOD IN PORTALS NOUS

Coco’s Deli has long been the go-to cafe for a healthy bite in Portals, popular with the post-workout crowd, remote workers, as well as new mums and their babies. I spoke to the new owner, Lauren about what’s new for the autumn/winter and how her summer has been…

popular and many a pooch can be spotted around Portals matching their owners in Coco’s branding. There are also, of course, adult t-shirts and hoodies, beach towels with inspirational slogans, coffee cups and water bottles available at www.cocosdeli.es.

Busy as ever, Lauren has had the opportunity to travel throughout the summer thanks to her amazing staff looking after the cafe and has spent some time in Ibiza where she took part in a fitness bootcamp pop-up which she thoroughly enjoyed. She also kept her Instagram followers up to date with her workouts that have been hugely popular throughout the summer. Whilst in Ibiza, Lauren also visited lots of different cafes and delis and got lots of fantastic new ideas that she will potentially incorporate into Coco’s menus.

So, if you are looking for a healthy lunchtime alternative, a delicious smoothie on the go, or simply a comfortable place to hang out in Portals Nous, head down to Coco’s Deli. Keep up to date with all of the latest news by visiting the Instagram page @cocosdeli or Lauren’s travel and fitness videos at @justamylauren. And, watch this space as Coco’s Deli number two could be just around the corner!

Coco’s has gone from strength to strength since Lauren took over back at the beginning of the year and the summer months have been the busiest yet. The deli’s regulars have continued to pop in daily for their lunches, smoothies and shakes, but also new clients and tourists have been flocking there for their health-food fix. A lot of this is thanks to Lauren’s Instagram posts that have been encouraging the social-media-savvy to snap a few photos to feed the “gram” and show off their holiday tan to those back home.

Lauren tells me that the success of Coco’s is down to her incredible team. “They have been amazing and really helped me to get things up and running and have told me that this is the busiest season ever! I am so grateful

to them and proud of them all.”

As the cooler months (hopefully!) are soon to arrive in Mallorca, Lauren is looking at incorporating some warmer dishes onto the menu like some healthy soups, a chilli con and a chilli sin carne, and a selection of seasonal drinks and other exciting ideas that will be introduced in the coming months. “We want to make Coco’s somewhere cosy to spend the winter months with plenty of blankets, heaters and some dishes that will warm you up”, Lauren tells me.

Those of you that follow Coco’s on Instagram may have spotted some of their merchandise that is now available both in the deli and through the online store. The doggy t-shirts and hoodies have proven to be one of the most

CELEBRITY MAGAZINE FRIENDS I’M SO THRILLED AND EXCITED TO SHARE WITH YOU THAT AFTER A FIVE YEAR ABSENCE AND BY THE TIME YOUR READ THIS ISSUE MYSELF AND MY 4 SPOILT DOGS WILL BE WELL AND TRULY ENSCONCED BACK ON THE WHITE ISLE !

Why the big move from Bristol to Ibiza ? Well over the years I’ve got on pretty well with my gal pal Tanit, the warrior goddess of dance, fertility, sexuality, creation, destruction and protector of Ibiza (now that’s a CV!). Yes, we’ve had our dramas, fallouts, and read each other to filth on some occasions and I’ve always suspected she’s Bipolar 1 just like me but she’s always had my back and has lured me back to live full-time in Ibiza offering me fabulous opportunities I just couldn’t turn down ! My old dog walking & pet sitting clients have been struggling to find the pet care they need so that calling was a no brainer, especially as I will get to experience the changing Ibicenco seasons at the stunning natural wonder, Cala Aubarca for daily dog walks and adventures. Also with a new Saturday night DJ Residency in-place at Wait…What ? Ibiza Party’s mothership, the iconic and colourful Sunrise Bar, Ibiza Old Town plus other DJ gigs in the pipeline and my new job pinned down  heading up the Ibiza News and Gossip as Ibiza Feature Writer for everyone’s favourite “Celebrity Magazine” how could I resist Tanit’s seductions? I’m truly up for all of it with bells on, to be moving back, DJing for y’all and bringing you readers lots of very interesting Balearic related stories & news items now that I will have my ear to the ground, it really is the perfect way to end the Summer. If you have a subject or story you would like me to consider then please get in touch with me ! So what have I been up to recently and what’s in store that we can all be part of over the next few months now that there’s an Autumn

chill is in the air ? At the time of writing this I was lucky enough to experience the brand spanking (excuse the pun) new Torture Garden Ibiza, the final one of 2022 and, holy mol,y it did not disappoint! The performances were avant-garde, gothic realness & International Performance Artist MAKO was sensational, leaving me in awe of her artistry. DJ Allen who is also TG’s Co-Founder and responsible for the production cog in the wheel played a killer set as did TG Rezzy Danny Oliver who flew in especially for TGI. DJ Secretario from Sonica Radio Ibiza completed the magic trio who all served up tech/progressive house sets that created “THE” unique, incredible atmosphere you will only find at a TG & TGI event. Well done Pedro and the TGI Family - it’s no surprise that the world’s largest fetish event has been such a huge success at NUI in Ibiza this summer. Please sir, can I have some more in 2023

! Now how’s this for smooth segue, one I think you will bite your vampire fangs deep into ! The Clockwork Orange Party Brand is one of my all-time fav’s, I’ve just been to the amazing all-dayer at Fire & Lightbox London with my best gal pal Lynn Cosgrave, yes I do get about! Clockwork Orange is celebrating an incredible 30-year birthday milestone next year and have me and my bud DJ Danny Oliver (check out ‘MOVE’ Danny’s new tune, it’s deffo in my set list !) DJing b2b this coming Halloween at The Clockwork Orange “Day Of The Dead” Extravaganza. To say that Danny and I are shaken and excited on steroids is an understatement. Clocky Promoters Andy Manston and Danny Clockwork always deliver A-class CO events and know their onions and this fully themed “Day of The Dead” production has some incredible DJs and performers. Check out the Arena 1 stellar line on the Clockwork Orange Website, Arena 2 DJ’s TBA but that’s where you’ll find me and Dan suitably and horrifically dressed. Taking place on 29th October at Chelmsford City Racecourse, UK from 11 am till very late, I advise you to get your tickets early and start prepping your ghoulishly, awesome outfits, oh & vampires, don’t forget your sunblock! Closer to home this fall there is a new party to see us through those long White Isle winter months ahead. The word on the cobbled streets of Ibiza Old Town is that Dawn Hindle and Guy Williams have got that well & truly sorted! What got my attention from the get-go was the name of this new Thursday night at the Asal Ibiza Restaurant & Bar, “A New Dawn &

Authentic Italian Cuisine

Contro Corrente was born out of two friends’ passion for sharing their love of traditional, authentic Italian cuisine with pizza lovers across the island. It’s as simple as that. One of the essential qualities of our restaurant is the customer service we provide. Good food is not always enough to capture people’s interest. In our case, most of the clients come back because aside from high-quality food and a cosy environment, we always make our visitors feel welcomed and appreciated.

THE 6 KEY TRENDS WE’LL BE WEARING THIS AUTUMN

Following what has to be one of the hottest summers across Europe this year, it’s hard to imagine cooler, darker days and nights ahead. But autumn is imminent and it’s time to rethink the wardrobe, not that we’ve been wearing much for the past few months. Autumn is all about fresh outfit ideas and still being able to bare a little leg or go ‘sans’ coat. It’s the perfect window of opportunity for creative layering or getting extra mileage out of your favourite summer garments that you simply aren’t ready or willing to put away yet. It’s my favourite season and having researched most of this year’s Autumn/Winter 22 fashion shows, the signs have already started to surface. There are hints of originality as well as some full-circle ideas that have held so strong throughout the summer (and beyond) that I know they won’t disappear at the first glimpse of rain. From nostalgic designer handbags to the extension of hemlines with maxi skirt territory, these are the 6 key trends I think we will all be flexing in 2022.

1. NOSTALGIC HANDBAGS

Balenciaga’s reworked City bags and the new ‘Le Cagole’ have a lot to answer for. They spearhead a return to the extra-fussy ‘It Bag’ styles of the nineties and noughties, and now I’m rummaging through my cupboards hoping I still have a couple of Chloe or Dior Saddle Bags which are still functional and without moth holes, otherwise I’ll be picking up some vintage styles on eBay.

2.

MAXI SKIRTS

The great thing about this maxi skirt comeback is that no matter where you buy yours from—high end or high street —the overall effect of a very plain, pared-back style is classic and flattering. Slightly unfortunate if you’re still wanting to show off your summertanned pins.

3. FRINGED JACKETS

Bikers, blazers and bombers are all on the agenda for A/W 22 but there’s nothing a bohemian Balearic girl likes more than a swishy fringed jacket. Particularly good with dark jeans and over long (tube) dresses.

4. DESIGNER SLING-BACK SHOES

Throughout summer we loved our comfy shoes (Birkenstocks, Yeezys and Havainas) but with a renewed energy for heels, you’ll find lots of trendsetters stepping out in sling-backs this autumn with low or kitten heels, but ONLY with a designer logo or in gold and silver. Think 90s Prada, Gucci and Zara’s metallic offerings this year.

TUBE DRESSES

Following on from the resurgence of maxi skirts you’ll also find that form-fitting tube dresses are set to be big (and very comfy) news. Victoria Beckham has showcased her new bodycon dresses for all shapes and sizes.

CROCHET EVERYTHING

Crochet has taken over my feeds this summer and I see no reason for it to quieten down over the colder months. It’s that very last bastion of summer we can cling onto whilst keeping those new and alien chills at bay.

Sunday the 17th July saw Canadian rock legend Bryan Adams arrive in Mallorca to play some of his most popular hits from the last three decades along with some of his latest music. As part of the European leg of the ‘So happy it hurts’ tour, Bryan and his band got the 6500 strong crowd singing and dancing to classics like ’18 ’til I die’, ‘Back to You’, ‘Summer of ’69’ and of course the epic ‘Everything I do’. SOLLER VALLEY STORIES by

SLIDING INTO THE NEXT BEAUTIFUL SEASON

As the summer heat dies it is replaced by the cooldown and refocusing of the Mallorcan life. Our island is blessed by being seasonal and this gives us pleasures galore. For the sun to lose its summer glare the light becomes the feature of autumn. Painting groups arrive and easels take their place along the shore. This season is a magnet for all those art groups who have been longing to return to the art holidays they enjoyed before the pandemic. Mallorca loves to welcome the artists and those who come for special interest retreats.

Yoga in the Soller Valley is busy right now. The Ashram communities from centres

worldwide use the island for three months every year. They set themselves up in large centres and work hard in their respective spheres. Walking, climbing, meditation and daily yoga are part of the experience. This has been a feature of Soller life for many years and the interest continues to grow. The mountains and the ability to meditate on top of our world hold an unwavering appeal. The summer season encouraged many new visitors desperate to travel after the restrictions ended. This has seen a huge increase in those wanting to relocate here permanently. This is a very exciting development. New people, from different countries, are now wanting to join the multicultural community of the Soller Valley. Every new group and their ‘tribe’ bring new ideas, concepts and influence

into the melting pot and allows this place to continue to grow and change.

The new seasons will gradually cool us down and take us into the beginning of the months when the jacket comes out of the cupboard. This will be a big change from summer clothes and beachwear and we are delighted to see our old friend ‘the scarf’ coming into our world again. We are a valley of scarf wearers due to the drop in temperature when the sun goes down in our mountain weather pattern.

The Soller Valley offers a warm welcome all year round. We are truly blesseD with the wonders of nature in all our beautiful seasons.

MENORCA MOMENTS

We are loving our new life here and are amazed at how much there is to do and see away from the stunning beaches and coves. Throughout the island there are interesting evening markets, food festivals and live music is EVERYWHERE. Just in Mahón, we have concerts every night in the Cloisters throughout the summer months (tickets and programme details www.esclaustre. com). Jazz features quite predominantly but also reggae, soul, electro-pop, indie, blues, some great singer/songwriters and the occasional folk performance. It is relaxed seating at tables with bar service and a great way to spend an evening under the stars plus the tickets are very reasonably priced. I know people who go once or twice a week!

The ‘Nits de Música al Carrer’ take place every Tuesday in July & August in Mahón. Each of the many plazas has its own live music between 9 & 11 pm, there is a large artisan market and many of the independent shops remain open so there

is a lovely, busy atmosphere and you can wander around the town centre and enjoy these free performances whilst sat on the terraces of different bars and restaurants. However, the highlight of the live concerts this summer has to be the first edition of the Lazareto Music & Food Festival which took place between July 28th & August 6th. The venue was on the impressive island of Lazareto which is part of the Biosphere Reserve and was declared a heritage of cultural interest by UNESCO in 1993. It is located in the port of Mahon and this was also a brilliant opportunity to travel by boat to this idyllic setting to enjoy not only great music but dine there too. There was a great choice of options, two Michelin-starred chefs prepared tasting menus that could be reserved in advance. There was also a delightful garden area set up with many different food stalls where you could buy a variety of dishes alongside a selection of pop-up bars offering different drinks from the famous ‘pomadas’ made with

Xoriguer gin to locally brewed beers. Support groups also played live music here, setting the scene prior to going through to the concert area. All the seating offered great views of the stage in an intimate outdoor setting. There was a maximum of 2500 tickets allocated for each of the ten concerts. This year the lineup included a lot of international and national icons from the music scene such as UB40, Kool & the Gang, Ara Malikian, Antonio Carmona with Juanito Makende, Ana Torroja, Dire Straits Legacy, Los Secretos, David Otero with Taburete and Mayumana. I went with some Spanish friends to see Antonio Carmona and it was a fantastic experience with everyone dancing in the aisles!. The latest information about the 2023 edition is that it will be going ahead following its success but with the concerts spread out over the season from May to October – I can’t wait to see who will be performing and highly recommend you visit! “I can’t believe....end of summer and, oh my, it’s been a hot one”

CANCER CHARITY SHOP

While the rest of us have been enjoying our summer holidays, the volunteers at the Cala Nova Cancer Charity Shop have been working tirelessly to keep everything running for their various charities.

Even in August, when things tend to slow down on the island, the shop was making money which was donated to ASPANOB, La Asociación de Padres de Niños con Cáncer de Baleares and AECC, Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer. These charities received cheques for €12,000 and €10,000 respectively. Another €3,00 was donated earlier in the summer to another of the shop’s chosen charities.

Raising €25,000 is hugely impressive and is only possible thanks to the generous donations from residents and the hard work of the volunteers, but there is always more to be raised! The shop desperately needs more volunteers to help sort through donations and run the three shopsthe children’s shop, the main charity shop, and the furniture shop. As always donations are welcome and now that the season is coming to an end there is usually a lot of stuff

that needs to be taken off of boats, removed from rental properties, or just stored away until next year.

To make a donation or offer your time, please pop in and see Angela and the team at the Cala Nova Cancer Charity Shop at Avinguda de Joan Miró, 358 in San Agustin between 10 am - 2 pm from Monday to Saturday and be sure to pop your head into the furniture shop and children’s shop a few doors down. Or you can give Angela a call on +34 609 84 86 22 or call the shop on +34 971 708 664.

Well done to all of the volunteers for all of their hard work that is so vital to their charities!

Mind Matters a spiritual journey to recovery

Life mastering through the medicine of energy

How are you?…

That greeting question we politely ask one another, yet we always reassuringly say fine thanks as we’re too polite to divulge our true feelings and fear we’ll place our burden!

So how are you really feeling?…

It’s ok to not be ok, it’s ok to ask for help. We’re dedicating this edition to mental health. This edition enables us to read the feedback and positive outcomes from some of the many clients Jamie has educated and guided towards better mental health.

Case studies

Amanda, Mallorca, August 2022

I’m currently undergoing an “MOT” from Jamie. My mental health check has been designed for my needs and issues. Channeled energy & crystals were used for clearing blocked chakras, balancing emotions and energising my body. You could compare it to a re-boot, an engine check or a reconnection. I highly recommend it. I feel internally cleansed, free of brain fog & lethargy, leaving me peaceful & glowing. Many thanks Jamie you literally changed my life.

Keely, Mallorca, August 2022

Jamie’s shamanic work also extends to assisting crew in the yachting world, which has been part of his background & close to his heart. Mental health in Yachting has been highlighted as an area that lacks support. Along with thesupport of others Jamie is part of a team of professionals that are revising and addressing shortfalls in the support for crew members.

Island Spirit Mind, Body & Soul

Ben, Australia 2022

“I have bipolar. Type one. It is, to me, the hardest thing in my life that I have had to ‘deal’ with, because it is the condition, or illness, or pain, or whatever you want to call it, that has caused me what at times has felt like an insurmountable amount of grief and suffering. Two months ago now my Auntie passed away. It caused a sudden and unexpected rift in myheart and in the dynamic of my family, my mother on her way to Greece for her PhD, my sisters going through their own mental health issues. The family fell apart and unfortunately I soon after had a psychotic episode. The grief caused by the sudden loss of my Auntie (and for me, every time a member of the family dies, I usually haven’t known how to process the grief) broke my heart and I didn’t know how to handle my life. I had my fifth psychotic episode, and I went through it largely alone, in my mothers house which I was house sitting at the time. During this time I stumbled across Jaime, who was creating an online community of like minded people who believed in healing and a shamanistic way of life. I now consider Jaime a colleague of sorts, and a friend.. Jaime is the real deal when it comes to a person who can hold space for someone’s pain and has helped me in my own journey of wanting to provide alternative approaches to healing and suffering. I work in Mental Health, in Suicide Prevention, and the work is at times, is grueling, painful, and tough. But I know now that there is a path forward for me in my own career of helping and guiding others. I know that I will be able to one

day put my own spiritual belief systems in place, in a wholistic model, in order to help others. There is a path forward for me now, because in so many ways I was struggling with experiential and internal struggles as a biproduct of the delicacy and seriousness of my work. On a personal level, in tune with my own beliefs and identity, Jaime, over the course of a few sessions helped me to authentically heal. I cannot say that the journey for me is ‘over’ now as far as healing, because of course, I don’t think we can say it ever is. But I am more centered now, balanced, I’ve found more calm, and I have been able to more confidentially engage in alternative approaches to healing on top of my own therapies and consultations with my doctor. I’m on meds for my illness,

sure, and when I met Jaime I had been going through a period of VERY bad medication uptake due to stress and the oncoming onslaught of psychosis, but it’s really important for me to point out that for my whole life I have struggled with the concept of feeling different, or separate to others. It is this feeling of separateness, being gay, eventually finding out I had bipolar, having a string of failed relationships, life stressors, being homeless at times, losing jobs, having to rebuild time and time again after periods of suicidal depression and then periods of debilitating highs that drew me to wanting something ‘more’. It’s been an exhausting life at times... but the funny thing is, there is no way in the world I would take ANY of it back. People like Jaime help people like me to realise that more fully. The shamanistic approach is an interesting one... it is so deeply steeped in nature, that through working with Jaime I almost had no choice but to stop. listen. and connect. I have a friend, confident in her belief in science. But you know what? The very interesting thing is, and I have known her for 20 years, through thick and thin, she always, ALWAYS said... just believe in nature. Nature is enough fascination for you Ben, there is enough in nature to believe in, to turn to, to be still in, to be humbled by, and to find trust in. Jaime taught me this too, and he also taught me how to take stock in and appreciate what I already had. Working with Jaime wasn’t a walk in the park for me, I reflected on some of the most painful memories and experiences of my life with him, and like I said, he held space for that. And I am forever grateful.”

BOATS, BIKES AND AUTOMOBILES

All Things Come To Those Who Wait…

As a little kid, cutting my sailing teeth during Irish summer holidays racing a Mirror dinghy built by my parents and learning to swear a lot (my slightly older sister was crew..), winters were invariably spent leafing through the handful of old Beken of Cowes hardback picture books that littered our drafty Vicarage.

There was really only one class of yacht from that era that I would stare at endlessly - the J Class yachts of the 1930s which raced for the mystique and grandeur of the America’s Cup under Nathaniel Herreshoff’s Universal Rule, with a tangible feeling of sadness that

I would never see these things race in the flesh, long consigned as they were at that time to history.

Not so... In 1984, the American Elizabeth Meyer bought and restored the J Class Endeavour built by Camper & Nicholson in 1934 for the aviator Thomas Sopwith. She had lain in a mud berth on the Medina River in Cowes before being sold for 10 quid to another dreamer and a new berth at Calshot Spit before Meyer decided to take her on. Meyer described the restoration of Endeavour as an “urge inherent in the human nature”, before quickly realizing

the enormity of this task. Selling real estate investments to fund the restoration, Endeavour was chartered throughout Meyer’s entire ownership. What she did achieve was to bring life back into a class of yacht that remains perhaps the most iconic, majestic and beautiful that has ever raced - a legacy for which we should always be grateful. A further two originals - Velsheda and Shamrock V - were subsequently restored (although Shamrock V remains the only J to never fall into complete dereliction) and to date, a further six have been built from original drawings.

Photo www.christopherscholey.com

The first of these new builds was Ranger, a replica of the original Ranger ‘Hull 77-C’ for Harold Vanderbilt, the inheritor of vast wealth from the Vanderbilt US railroad pioneers, to defend the last ever America’s Cup sailed in J Class yachts in 1937 before the sanguineous WW2, when she beat Sopwith’s new Endeavour II (now rebuilt as Hanuman) by a resounding 4-0.

After the war, J Class yachts remained the default class for the Cup, although post-war economic realities meant that no one could afford to challenge in this hugely expensive class. Regardless of this, the original Ranger was scrapped at some stage during the war, perhaps becoming bullets or tanks for Omaha Beach… and the Cup eventually returned in 1956 under the much more affordable 12m Rule.

Today’s Ranger was completed at Danish Yachts at Skagen, Denmark in 2003 for John Williams - founder of an American Real Estate Investment house who sold her on to the current owner in 2019 as his first vesselquite an entrance into yachting...

For the first time since 2014, this year’s Palma Superyacht Cup had its own J Class fleetincluding Ranger - and that swearing kid

with the Mirror dinghy finally got the chance to get out sailing on a J through pestering a kind invitation out of Captain Tom Aiken and Ranger’s manager, Greg Sloat.

Amongst our crew were a quantity of some of the very best sailors around - Olympic and World Champions, Volvo Ocean Race and America Cup veterans, otherwise busy on the international regatta circuit in anything from TP52s to maxis and classics. My only option as a guest was just to keep out of the way as much as possible and enjoy the experience of these powerful and magnificent yachts. I’d like to say that I was at least up there in this exalted company with my chammy leather when back at the dock…

A Classic Crossing to Italy

No sooner had I stepped off the magnificent shape of Ranger, I was invited to be part of the delivery crew taking a classic 1913 Herreshoff schooner from Palma to Naples

– a vessel that won awards for her quite beautiful and sympathetic restoration by the Dutch yard Royal Huisman in 2019 – now under the captaincy of my good friend Nick. Although an easy and uneventful trip (just as one wants deliveries to be…), it was enlightening to be on board the vessel for which I am otherwise a shore-based provider of her Satcoms through my primary day job with Palma-based e3 Systems – and to see Nick in his ‘zone’, appreciating once more that I am lucky to be working with yacht captains at the very top of their profession on some of the world’s most beautiful yachts. With the owner joining the yacht in Italy, a hard few months lay ahead for the crew delivering a quite immaculate level of service to the owner and family, but we should once again rejoice that there remains such enthusiasm amongst owners in the industry to preserve these beautiful classics - and that there are Captains and crew taking such pride in sailing them.

BARCOS, MOTOS Y COCHES

Property Market Update

doubled compared with 2019. A third of all properties purchased in Mallorca are reportedly by foreigners.

Since writing the last Celebrity Magazine Property Report, my experience in the Mallorca housing market is that the lid of the volcano has definitely blown! Covid undoubtedly has had a significant impact on people wishing to change their living situations, with more mobility due to more flexible working conditions. (Albeit less for the Brits for a completely different Brexit situation!)

According to data from the College of Property Registrars, the average price per square metre for a home in the Balearics in the second quarter of 2022 increased by 2.7% to 3,459 compared to 3,132 in the first quarter, the highest increase in Spain. For a home of 80 square metres, this amounts to €276,720 euros. San Sebastian continues to be the most expensive city for resale homes at 5082 euros per square metre.

By comparison one of the most expensive properties on the market at present is a front-line property in Cala Vinyes offering 1479 square metres of living space priced at €35 million. This calculates to €23,665 euros per square metre – a hefty sum for a slice of the Mallorca pie. Mind you, it does come with a tennis court, its own private cave complete with bar and party area, and direct access to the sea! Another area where buyers are having to pay a premium

in the Balearics is property transfer tax, where buyers are paying 11.5% on luxury homes of one million euros or more. This compares to the average rate of 8% in the rest of Spain, although Catalonia has the second highest rate in the country with 11%. There is pressure to reduce the percentage in specific areas of the population to follow Andalucia, Galicia Murcia where the under 35’s pay between 3-3.5%, although those with less to spend already pay a staggered rate between 7 and 10% between property values of €300.000 and €700.000. This compares to Madrid where there is a flat rate of 6%.

The strong demand over the last few years has drained the used market, resulting in a serious lack of available housing in the Balearics. In addition permissions for new builds have been progressing very slowly due to bureaucratic red tape. Increased interest has also come from the United States, with the new direct flight from Newark, New York making the Balearics much more accessible. Americans, of course, love the traditional and authentic Spanish lifestyle in Mallorca, mixed with the history, cultural and natural beauty. The 2022 market has been as strong as in 2020 when the market went mad after the lockdowns were eased. Sales almost

Interest in purchasing country properties has seen a huge upturn over the last two years. In my personal experience this year it has been particularly difficult to find any property under 2 million euros with no illegal irregularities, which has been highly distressing for many clients. Certainly, an area that needs addressing by the Government in the near future. An overheated market is never a good thing, with some owners and developers becoming somewhat arrogant in offering sloppy contract terms when very large amounts of money are involved, due to the ready supply of seemingly over-eager buyers. Never a good indicator, and not good for the reputation in the housing market. In one particular instance, I was informed that four clients were reportedly “queuing up” for a new luxury project in the countryside. Thankfully they were taught a very necessary lesson when each stepped away one by one, post legal negotiations, with the developer quite put out at having to reluctantly comply to more rigid terms in favour of the buyers! As hot as the market is, August generally always sees a slow down due to couples needing to focus on their family holidays. But equally, an increase in mortgage rates and concerns over the ongoing crisis in Ukraine is anticipated to also compound a slow down in the fall. Where we are heading towards the end of the year is anyone’s guess, but will inevitably be impacted by the storm clouds gathering above the Global economy as a whole, however, if you require a balanced and more “holistic” view and guidance of the Mallorca property market, please don’t hesitate to get in contact.

HOMES & PROPERTIES

So you want to start a business…?

Darryl Lopez, our AXA DYLSI expert spills the beans on how to protect yourself should you decide to take the plunge and open your own business or work for yourself on the island. What do you need to know and how do you make sure that you are protected?

Here are Darryl’s 6 pointers to make sure that you have all of the information to rest assured that insurance has your back!

1) Public Liability:

This insurance protects you against yourself, your staff, your mistakes, and your business. The tourist that slips in your shop, the employee that burns themselves on the pizza oven, or even a fire that starts on your premises. “Responsibilidad Civil” or Public Liability is the insurance that covers you for unforeseen circumstances that may occur that affect your staff, clients, or your neighbours and covers everything up to and including the legal costs that you may be liable for.

2) Contents Insurance:

You’ve kitted out your new shop, stocked your new restaurant or bar, or perhaps set up the workshop that you’ve always dreamt of…and disaster strikes. A pipe bursts, the place catches fire, or perhaps an opportune burglar stumbles upon your “local” and decides that what yours is theirs? Contents and Premises insurance for your business protects against this. Whether you rent or own your premises, any damage to the building or any loss or damage to its contents is not covered unless you have insurance and landlords are not liable. Your own contents insurance makes sure that everything that keeps you going from day to day is protected.

3) Health Insurance:

If you’re starting a business you need to make sure that the first person that you insure is yourself. Around the world, public healthcare is

taking longer and longer, and after the pandemic, these waiting lists are only going to get longer. Why wait in a queue when your time can be better spent helping your business to thrive?

Private health insurance helps you to skip the queues, you can add your family to it and, most importantly, it is deductible from your tax bill!

4) Life Insurance:

Life insurance is a necessary policy that means that all those things that you are working hard for have a long-term benefit. Should your business grow, the aim is for it to make money and that your professional legacy remains for your children. Life insurance is also a morbid topic and one that doesn’t often relate to the injury of the main breadwinner in your family. Life insurance policies often cover Total Permanent Disability. On the islands, there are lots of people that work in risky jobs; on yachts, on construction sites, or in agriculture. This insurance guarantees that, should you be unable to work, you and your family will be protected and receive some form of income - a lot more than you would receive by claiming the state benefit.

5) Income Protection:

The “baja” is when you can visit your doctor and be signed off work, when you have a contracted job and the Government pay you to be at home when you are unwell. This same benefit is also available to autonomos but, as most self-employed individuals pay the minimum, it only actually covers the bare minimum. A private policy gives you the peace of mind that this will be available but also makes sure that it helps you to look after the majority of your

monthly outgoings. AXA also don’t need you to cut through the red tape - a medical report is sufficient for a payout and they will do the rest for you!

6) Savings Plans:

We have just started to crawl out of a global pandemic and the last thing on our minds is a savings plan. And then, there are the folk on the island that were burnt by the “25-year savings plans” of years gone by. But, savings plans are back with a newfound, regulated vengeance! The first thing we, as ex-pats, need to realise, is that we will most likely never see a state pension in Spain. It takes 35 years to pay into one and, as per our latest pension updates, even then it is not guaranteed. So when our hair starts to grey and our income isn’t matching our longevity (I’m there and I’m 32 and somewhat resemble a badger!), a savings plan is a sound idea. By starting a savings plan, you can begin to put aside some money for the days when the income is not as regular as you would like. You can pay up to €8000 per year but as little as you like per month and top it up as you see fit... And, the best thing about it is that, should you not be here to enjoy the benefits of this savings plan, think of it as another life insurance - but one that you can cash out, check on and increase whenever you see fit.

So now that you’ve found your dream vocation, you’ve started the ball rolling, and are ready to go live with your project - let’s protect it! Let Darryl and his team make sure it is looked after. Contact them today for a chat and see what they can do for you!

HAVE PASSPORT – MIGHT NOT TRAVEL!

Brexit has brought many changes to our lives - most of which just cause headaches. One of these changes is pet travel. Before Brexit, the UK was very strict about animals entering the UK with overzealous checks on passport requirements and timing of parasitic treatments. Now the boot is on the other foot! The EU is getting its revenge: making pet entry into Europe more difficult than going to Australia.

Pre-Brexit it was sufficient to have a UK European passport or a Spanish/ French/German, etc passport and worming treatment and “fit to travel” check between 24 hours to 5 days before travel.

Now, English vets are not worthy anymore - they can´t sign anything in a European passport! UK ones don’t exist and those old European UK versions are considered “Pirates”!

UK pets need a 10-sheet document at a cost of between150-200 pounds which is only valid for 4 months. Also, there are new regulations for international pet travel around the rest of the world; the Cexgan system, which makes everything very complicated. It involves months of planning and timing beforehand plus, scanning and emailing lots of personal documents and plane tickets to numerous administrations to obtain the travel certificates and permissions. This means hours of paperwork and a lot of stress for vets and clients…and more expense!

We are trying our best to ease the pain by helping our clients to obtain a Spanish European passport (dogs and cats with dual nationality!) but nothing is simple anymore.

For help with animal trafficking (just kidding!), call Clinic Veterinaria

Bendinat on +34 971 40 44 59.
