BRYAN ADAMS So Happy It Hurts Tour ‘22
After two years of writing music and hibernating throughout the pandemic, Bryan Adams is back on the road with his “So Happy It Hurts” tour and is set to perform at Golf d’Andratx as part of the LegendsVIP concerts in Mallorca on July 17th.
By Ben Mulvey
With five decades in the music business under his belt, over 100 million records sold and some of the most recognisable songs to his name, Bryan Adams is back with a new album and a brand new tour throughout Europe and the UK. As one of the most important singer-songwriters of recent times, it is no surprise that tickets to the “So Happy It Hurts” have been selling out as soon as they are released online. His sell-out shows in Madrid and Barcelona in February were the first major live music events in Spain since the start of the pandemic with the Canadian artist performing familiar songs as well as new music from his latest album. “It’s nice to be able to come out of the confinement that the coronavirus pandemic has forced us into. I’m very happy to know that Spain is opening up again to live music, it’s very good news. So I’m happy to be back on the road, it’s very exciting,” he recently said in an interview with Los40. The “So Happy It Hurts” tour is different from Bryan’s previous tours. It still has the same rock feel and the familiar songs such as “Summer of ‘69”, “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You”, and “Please Forgive Me” but this time his new music is bright and optimistic. When asked why this album has a more optimistic tone than his previous albums considering the world is currently a pretty pessimistic place he replied: “The truth is that I wasn’t thinking about the rest of the world, I was just writing songs,
and that’s how they came out, optimistic and full of hope. That’s how I felt, it wasn’t planned.” Bryan has certainly not been idle and has kept himself very busy during the last few years having worked on the “Pretty Woman” musical on Broadway in 2018 to great acclaim and subsequently releasing an album with the songs from the show. This album has been re-recorded and is due for release in March 2022 and he has also recorded a Greatest Hits album due for release this year as well as the “So Happy It Hurts” album that is also being released on March 11th. As a keen photographer, Bryan has recently released his Pirelli 2022 calendar where he has photographed famous people such as Cher, Rita Ora, Jennifer Hudson and Iggy Pop. The calendar is called “On The Road” and the theme was an obvious choice for the
Canadian guitarist and singer-songwriter “because ‘on the road’ is what I’ve been doing for the last 45 years,” Adams said after the star-studded, two-day shoot wrapped in Los Angeles. “Touring has been my life, really.” “It would be very, very hard to encapsulate everything that goes on ‘on the road’ in a couple of days. Sowhat I tried to do was to represent some of the aspects of it,” he said recently. Bryan has also previously photographed such high-profile subjects as Sir Mick Jagger, John Boyega, Naomi Campbell, and even the Queen, whom he shot for her Golden Jubilee. “One of the things about photographs is that you don’t want things to be normal, you want an image to be something memorable and so in creating these images, you try and create things that work with the concept of being on the road but you also want to create fantasy. “You’d need a book of each person to be able to tell the full story, but it’s a glimpse – and it’s an interesting glimpse – of each artist.” So, what can we expect from Mr Adams when he brings his tour to Mallorca? In his Madrid and Barcelona concerts, he took to the stage and kicked off by greeting the crowds with “Welcome” and then “Benvinguts”, in Catalan, before introducing himself, also in Catalan: “Em dic Bryan, i seré el vostre cantant aquesta nit” (My name is Bryan and I will be your singer tonight), which was welcomed with shouts of delight

from his audience. In the two hours of the concert, Adams performed around thirty songs, many of these from the iconic “Reckless” album that was released in 1984, including “Heaven” and the essential “Summer of 69”, but also early compositions like “Tonight”, and “Cloud #9” and “When You’re Gone” from the late 90s and some of his new songs from the “So Happy It Hurts” album. Towards the middle of the concert, another of his greatest hits, “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You”, which in 1991 spent 16 weeks at number one in the United States, had everybody swaying in their seats. As a born performer, Bryan Adams is bound to have everyone dancing and singing along to his songs athis concerts and we are lucky that he has included Mallorca in his tour dates so don’t miss out! Bryan Adams is playing at Golf D’Andratx on July 17th as part of the LegendVIP concerts in association with Celebrity Magazine and tickets start from €25 with VIP Legends Club tickets costing €550.
Cuenta con el mismo espíritu rock y suenan los temas tales como “Summer of ‘69”, “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” y “Please Forgive Me”, pero ahora sus nuevos temas son positivos y optimistas.

Ibiza is once again set for unforgettable experiences to celebrate the return of largescale music events, parties and to reunite a unique global community of music fans. The party season is poised to start earlier

than ever before with many of the biggest names in electronic music including Adam Beyer, Black Coffee, Charlotte de Witte, Chloé Caillet, Kölsch, Layla Benitez, Paul Kalkbrenner, Stephan Bodzin, ARTBAT, The Martinez Brothers, and much more. Watch this space! Originally known as Ku Club, Privilege in San Rafael is just one of the venues on offer and according to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest nightclub in the world with a capacity of up to 10,000 guests. The venue is a repurposed aeroplane hangar that boasts an impressive 25m high roof, 6,500m2 of space and a fitting industrial aesthetic. At this world-famous venue, many renowned and legendary artists have performed from Freddie Mercury to Kylie Minogue and Grace Jones, Madonna, Led Zeppelin, Tina Turner, and David Bowie who have all shown up to this prestigious nightclub to enjoy the party.
Kicking off the summer in style over the last weekend in April, the two club titans of Playa d’en Bossa - Ushuaïa and Hï Ibiza - join together for an opening that will be nothing short of spectacular. The ‘Better Together’ event begins in Ushuaïa and carries on in Hï Ibiza starting at midday and is likely to be a very late affair. The legendary supergroup Duran Duran have also shared details of a three-day ‘Touch the Sunrise’ immersive experience on the White Island this year. The pop legends have announced a programme of events in Ibiza that will see the band perform here for the first time since 1987 and is all part of the group’s continued 40th anniversary celebrations, which began with the release of their latest album ‘Future Past’ in 2021. ‘Duran Duran: Touch The Sunrise’ will also take place over the May bank holiday weekend from April 29-May 2 during the Ibiza Music Summit. Ibiza industry insiders would agree that the International Music Summit represents the spark that ignites a season on the island. Through a series of keynotes, lectures, workshops and sessions, the platform covers subjects that affect the music industry and clubbing culture today. The live programme, which has been specially curated by the band starts with ‘Taste the Summer: Night Versions’ on April 29 and will see fans take over legendary Ibiza institution, Pacha, for DJ sets from Duran Duran drummer Roger Taylor and DJ/producer Erol Alkan who produced the group’s new album. Day two, called ‘Come Undone’, will offer a series of activities including an outdoor screening of an unseen documentary. The last day of ‘Touch The Sunrise’ will see them perform
AAA a dancefloor-heavy set at the open-air venue Ushuaïa. Pete Tong will also perform for two hours before the band’s closing set. Speaking about the event, singer Simon Le Bon said: “‘Touch The Sunrise’ is going to be an extraordinary experience - and something we’ve never done before! Everyone in the band has a tremendous love for the island and over the years I have personally spent many summers there with friends and family so it’s become somewhat of a home away from home for us. People often think of Ibiza as just a party island which of course it can be but there’s a side to it that we really hope our fans get to explore while they are there, that’s about the natural beauty of the place, the incredible food and the warmth of the people who live there year-round” For many, the anticipation of summer 2022 in Ibiza has everyone hungry like the wolf and all the better to party with them.

CELEBRITY | 9
Martin & Hanna Tell Us About Babies, Holidays and Their New Projects Touching base with Dr Martin and Hanna Kinsella is always a highlight for me when writing my articles for Celebrity Magazine, not only because they are friends, but I am always fascinated by what they have been up to and what they are working on. It is always something impressive and this time it was no different. By Ben Mulvey
Those of you that follow Martin and Hanna on Social Media will no doubt have seen their fabulous holiday snaps in Dubai and The Maldives with the three of them enjoying a bit of family time around the New Year. “We flew over to Dubai with Hanna’s family for New Year’s Eve which was lovely as we got to spend plenty of quality time together in the sunshine,” Martin tells me. The family certainly seemed to have a great time with pictures in some of the five-star hotels and on the beautiful beaches in Dubai before flying off to a private house on the beach in the breath-taking Maldives. But it’s not all luxury holidays for this couple who never seem to sit still! “We’ve been really busy with work and with Max who is currently teething, plus I am in my last trimester with baby number two but we are all doing really well,” Hanna says with a huge smile on her face. Hanna certainly does have plenty to be proud of having just won an award for Best Whitening Toothpaste at the Oral Health & Dentistry Awards. This is, of 10 | CELEBRITY
course, a fantastic achievement but more so considering that her Icy Bear Dental range was only launched last year. “Of course, I was absolutely delighted and especially since we have just launched a new office and some new products including a kid’s range,” she says. Dr Martin has also been very busy since their holiday and has made several trips to Mallorca to see patients in his clinic. “It’s so nice to be travelling back and forth to Mallorca and seeing clients. From now on I aim to be there at least once a month and Hanna and Max will be joining me as and when they can,” he says. Aside from his day job of making people feel better about themselves in his clinic, he has also been working hard to launch his Dr Kinsella skincare range. The online launch was on March 7th and the official launch party will be held at the end of March - likely to be a spectacular affair if previous parties the couple have thrown are anything to go by! The skincare range has been developed by Martin, Hanna and their team to include a face cream and an under eye cream
with other products due to be released throughout the year. He has also been running his online hormone treatments and has even made appearances on British TV to discuss various topics related to these clinics. And if that isn’t enough, Hanna is set to start filming the new series of the Real Housewives of Cheshire in April with episodes set to air weekly on ITV Be or on ITV Player. This will no doubt be tiring for Hanna as she will be heavily pregnant with baby number two but I am sure, like with everything they do, the couple will take everything in their stride and nothing will slow them down. Martin’s clinic, Re-enhance Medicina Asthetica is located in Avenida del Rey Jaime I, 108, in Santa Ponsa and, enquiries and appointments can be made by contacting info@re-enhance.com.To find out more about Dr Kinsella Skincare visit www. drkinsella.com and for more information on Icy Bear or to place an order visit www. icybeardental.com. THE COUNTDOWN TO THE MALLORCA CHAMPIONSHIPS 2022 BEGINS… On the 14th of February in a very special event held at the Mallorca Country Club with Toni Nadal as tournament director and Feliciano López as guest star, the countdown has begun for the second edition of the Mallorcan tournament to be held next June. The event was presided over by Edwin Weindorfer, CEO of Emotion Group, the company organizing the tournament, and also served as the official presentation of Pilar Carbonell as Emotion’s general manager in Spain.
Toni Nadal highlighted the success of the first edition held in 2021 since “it is not easy to bring five top 10 players of the ATP circuit and the Mallorca Championships did it last year”. Due to its dates and location, the Mallorca Championships seeks to consolidate itself as a necessary stage for the best players in the world to prepare for Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the year. Feliciano López himself, who won his 500th victory on the circuit here in Mallorca, says that “playing tennis on grass in Mallorca is unusual and very special. Many players did not know it and beyond tennis, another world opens up for them (…) and the tournament gives a spectacular treatment to the players” It should not be forgotten that last year the tournament was able to count on superstars like the world number 1, Novak Djokovic, the recent finalist of the Australian Open and brand new champion of the first edition, Daniil Medvedev, the Austrian Dominic Thiem and the current number 8 of the world Casper Ruud. In the national section, great figures such as Roberto Bautista, Pablo Carreño (Olympic bronze medalist) and the afore mentioned Feliciano López stood out. 12 | CELEBRITY
At the beginning of his speech Edwin Weindorfer congratulated Rafa Nadal and Toni for their recent victory in the Australian Open and focusing on the tournament he wanted to make it clear that he will fight for the best players in the world to play in this championship, which by the way has the second highest prize money in the world in a tournament of its category. Pilar Carbonell has remarked to the more than 200 attendees the excitement of joining Emotion in Spain and that she will fight to make the company grow in our country and in the island in particular. In the same line, the mayor of Calviá, Alfonso Rodríguez, has been proud to have in his land “a quality and unique event”. Toni Nadal also wanted to focus on the “importance of having events like the Mallorca Championships that help to continue promoting the islands”. The tournament continues to grow and this year will have stands with capacity for 4000 people and the VIP tent will double its numbers to 600 people. In the current health situation, the tournament could be held with 85% of the allowed capacity, but the organization is confident that it can be
enjoyed, as far as possible, with full capacity. When asked about the hypothetical presence of Rafa, Toni Nadal has answered that he does not know the probabilities of that happening but that “as a Mallorcan and as director of this tournament I wish that possibility could happen.” Closing the event, taking advantage of the fact that today is Valentine’s Day and having Feliciano’s presence at the press conference, the tournament wanted to organize a contest by which those people who between today and tomorrow buy two tickets for the tournament enter a draw for two prizes: a meet&greet with Feliciano himself during the tournament and an upgrade in your general ticket converting it into a VIP ticket. RAFAEL NADAL, returned to his native Mallorca, the undisputed King of Tennis, after scooping his historic record 21st Grand Slam Victory at the Australian Open. Following a gruelling, nail-biting, 5-hour 24-minute final against an opponent ten years his junior! An ecstatic Rafa and his team touched down in Palma after over 24 hours travel and headed straight to his Rafael Nadal Academy in Manacor to honour his commitments at a press conference. Rafa clutching his cup, overjoyed to have broken the men’s all-time record for the most career Grand Slam titles. Especially as he had been so poorly prepared after injury had kept him from tournament play for six months. “It’s unbelievable!” his Uncle and former coach Toni Nadal told Celebrity. “Especially taking into consideration the condition he went into the tournament. Just unbelievable.” Surely no better ambassador for Mallorca! Photo by Clive Brunskill

CELEBRITY SPRING FASHION ‘22 Are you ready to pack away the woollen hats, coats and gloves to reunite with some fresh spring fashion pieces? Spring and summer are definitely my favourite seasons of the year and if the recent SS22 Fashion Weeks are anything to go by, this year looks set to be a scorcher. Whether you’re pacing the streets of London or strolling along Balearic beaches, it’s time to start thinking about your spring wardrobe - and 2022 looks a whole lot more light-hearted, nostalgic and celebratory than we’ve seen for quite some time.
LOW-SLUNG WAISTS
WHITE SUITING
High-rise jeans may have dominated our wardrobes for over a decade, but in spring 2022 things get a whole lot more ‘00s as the low-slung waist makes its way back to the forefront of sartorial consciousness. They’re all about bearing the midriff, so there’s no trend value in opting for low-rise and hiding it beneath a long knit. It’s all about cropped tops for full-on ‘00s drama. There’s still time to get a few stomach crunches in.
Suits may have been off the radar for quite some months as many of us took to working from home in our PJs and loungewear, however, this spring sees the old staple return with a vengeance. Those of you who follow me will know I have always been a huge fan of the white trouser suit – and always from ZARA. It’s a timeless classic and always looks fresh and flattering. Simply add gold accessories for some spring bling.
PLEATED SKIRTS
HIGHLIGHTER YELLOW
One of the most wearable trends to come out of this round of catwalk shows was the pleated skirt, and while there was a light scattering of mini incarnations reminiscent of last summer’s favourite tennis skirt, for SS22 it’s all about the pleated midi. Printed, plain, colourful, monochrome, paired with knits or paired with a bralette (underwear as outerwear is going to be huge) – as long as it’s pleated then you’re bang on-trend. Try wearing these with knee-length boots in bright neon colours.
Love ‘safe’ black, white and beige? Then this is NOT for you. Neon yellow looks set to be one of the hottest hues this spring for women and men. The even more intense news? It’s particularly epic when worn head-to-toe. If neon yellow is too much, try pink or green (or all together if you’re brave enough) but always remember – the brighter the better. It’s springtime after all!
ULTRA-MINI MINIS Pleated skirts may be midi for this season, but all other skirts are raising the hemlines to minuscule lengths. These are minis that the supermodels of the ‘90s would’ve been proud to wear, with well over half of the thigh exposed. Opt for super-statement shades, prints or fabrics to ensure that while the skirt may be small it still packs a real punch. There’s still time to get a few squats in.

FACES OF MALLORCA JOANNA DE DEIA - CERAMIST TO THE STARS Faces of Mallorca highlights those people on the island that make it such a special place to live and Joanna de Deia, a well-known Deia ceramist, is one of those wonderful people who give their time, energy and passion to help others. By Ben Mulvey
If you have been in Mallorca for some time, you will no doubt have met Joanna at one time or another. This bubbly American is somewhat of a stalwart on the social scene on the island and has spent her last four decades on Mallorca working to improve the way that we look after the sea that sustains us. Working from her gorgeous studio in her hometown of Deia, Joanna creates beautiful ceramics, mainly inspired by the island and the sea. She even has a few celebrity clients but we shall get to that…. Joanna’s story begins in the United States where she was fortunate enough to sail when she was a child which ignited her passion to live a simple life in, surrounded by the sea. After attending university, this dream became a reality when she flew to the Caribbean and quickly began working on a beautiful boat. Just over a year later she completed her first Atlantic crossing and arrived in Mallorca. After a while, she met her husband in Deia and the two were soon mingling with famous artists and musicians in the area in their cafe. “I had no idea that this little village had so many fabulous, well-known and talented artists and musicians…it was so much fun in the 80s!” she tells me. During those years of running the cafe, Joanna also worked on her ceramics, something that she had been studying since she was 15 years old. It was here that she began creating her famous ceramic fish that once hung in the cafe. Joanna showed me one of the fish during our chat and told me that it mysteriously appeared on her doorstep recently - 20 years later! After 17 years of running the cafe and raising their kids, Joanna and her husband sold it and in 1993 Joanna finally opened her own ceramics studio and focused on her passion full time. During this time, Joanna was actively involved in the community and became a representative of the Residents Association on behalf of artists. Through this position, Joanna became involved in launching a fundraiser to fix a problem with water pollution that was plaguing Deia at the time. This started her on a path that led her to be one of the leading marine conservation 22 | CELEBRITY
activists and campaigners on Mallorca. Once Deia council had fixed the sewage problem, Joanna moved on to buoys. At the time, boats could come up to the shore and drop anchor meaning that swimmers were often in danger of being struck. Again, this campaign was successful and the buoys that Joanna and the other volunteers fought for
are still in place today. To protect the sea that surrounds us, Joanna’s next campaign was to organise beach cleans and raise awareness of the amount of rubbish, plastic or otherwise, that was being dumped into our beautiful azure waters. It was at an event at the Robert Graves Centre that Joanna’s cause was raised and local resident
she is at the helm of Mission Blue . This was a huge win for Joanna and the Balearics “I made an introduction and Brad ( of Save the Med Foundation ) made it happen. We finally got the first Mission Blue Hope Spot in the Mediterranean,” she says with adoration and pride. Save The Med Foundation, which we all know today, has shaped the way we see marine conservation along with other groups like the Cleanwave Movement making a splash to improve our waters. So how does an American ceramist living in a mountain village on Mallorca merge her passions? By creating art to raise awareness of the need to preserve and protect the Mediterranean Sea and raising funds for the organisations she supports - a true example of using one passion to fuel another. You can see her colourful and attractive ceramic marine conservation murals in Soller, Deia and Valldemossa. She hopes to get them up all over the coast of Mallorca
“I have always felt that art, even if decorative art, should have the effect of opening up the minds of people to a new perspective in one way or another. I feel that my art ( especially the Save The Med murals ) really reflects the true natural beauty of Mallorca and will inspire people to be more conscious of what they do with their rubbish so it doesn’t end up in the sea ”
(and Hollywood superstar!) Michael Douglas waded in with his support and the next day the powers that be launched into action to get things cleaned up. “It is really quite impressive, the power of celebrity. just by backing something, famous people can use their influence to get things done ” Joanna comments. How true this is and it is perhaps a sad thing that it takes someone else to force us into action. Joanna’s work in marine conservation really kicked up a gear when she went to San Francisco and spoke to the Mission Blue Foundation about working on Mallorca. Until this point, search as she might, there
was no established marine conservation organisation on Mallorca. Staggering really when you think that we are, quite literally, surrounded by the sea and many of us rely on it for our livelihoods and leisure! After this meeting in San Francisco Joanna got in touch with Brad Robertson (some of you may know him or remember him from one of my previous ‘Faces of Mallorca’ features) and put him in touch with her contact at Mission Blue. One of Joanna’s real-life heroines, Sylvia Earle, is an oceanographer, explorer, author and lecturer with experience as a field research scientist, government official, and director for corporate and non-profit organisations;
Joanna’s latest project is a new ceramic mural that she is creating to raise awareness of the relationship between people and the sea and there is no better metaphor than a mermaid for such a project - a person that lives in the sea with all of the attributes of a human without, what’s that word again, feet. If Joanna’s story has inspired you, dive into her website www.ceramicsbyjoanna.com or Instagram @ceramicsbyjoanna to have a look at some of her work or pop into her studio in Deia for a chat with this, quite frankly, fascinating woman. I guarantee you will hit it off and her stories are fabulous (I promise I have not been bribed but, who knows, maybe someone will leave me a piece of her work on my doorstep?! CELEBRITY | 23
ALMA - AN ACOUSTIC DUO WITH SOUL Alma is a multi-talented singing duo that writes and rearranges their own music, taking their influence from retro vibes, Latin sounds and chilled arrangements. Celebrity Magazine sat down with recently them to find out what they have been working on since lockdown, what their plans are for the summer and to find out all about their new album. Meet Alicia Nilsson and Martin Weiss… By Ben Mulvey
Alicia and Martin met at a gig that they were both performing in Germany in 2019 Martin as a guitarist and Alicia providing the vocal talent. This chance meeting was love at first sight and the couple quickly began collaborating and sharing their passion for music. Alicia was born in Sweden to Swedish and Argentinian parents and spent her early years travelling the world as part of a circus troupe, her parents were performing motorcycle stunts at the time and Alicia quickly became involved in their exciting lifestyle. This ignited her passion for performing and before long she branched out on her own and 24 | CELEBRITY
started singing professionally and creating her own music around the world, performing in Mallorca and around Europe for over twenty years in well-known venues around the island. Martin was born and raised in Germany and found his passion for music, guitar in particular, at a young age. After studying jazz guitar in the Netherlands, Martin worked as a professional guitarist, touring the world with famous artists such as Gloria Gaynor and Chris De Burgh amongst others. Martin also worked in producing a well-known guitar magazine in Germany and spent a lot of his time producing records and creating musical
arrangements. It was during the worldwide lockdown that Alicia and Martin’s creative partnership really gained momentum. With time to reflect, to rest, and to assess what it is they wanted to do in their careers, the couple began working on their latest album “Gracias a la vida”. “We wanted to create something that meant something to us and the album is a mix of songs from around the world, that my father loved. Some of them are over 100 years old,” Alicia tells me. “Lockdown gave us the chance to spend every evening together, with our families, which is something that we don’t get to do very often as performers.”
The album itself transports you to a simpler time, with expertly arranged musical scores, a refreshing take on old and familiar classics and flawless vocals. Listening to the album, I felt like I was in a private concert and that every lyric was loaded with meaning and sentiment. Aside from their own recording projects, Alicia and Martin have also been working on a musical called “China Girl” that was due to be on tour last year but was ultimately delayed due to the restrictions that were introduced during the pandemic. “China Girl” is a reinterpretation of Romeo and Juliet set in New York at the turn of the Millennium that features the music of the legendary David Bowie, expertly rearranged by Alma specifically for the show. It tells the story of “the westernised residents from “Little Italy” and the Chinese immigrants”. It is a story about eternal love and fatal enmity between the run-down backyards, cookshops, junk stores and upscale restaurants of Manhattan’s Chinatown. The show was originally scheduled for 104 shows and is now back to thrill audiences with the first show since the restrictions were lifted taking place in Munich back at the end of February. Based in Algaida, when the couple is not touring, Alicia and Martin spend time with their family and perform around the island. This summer they already have a packed schedule with performances at many private events and concerts. They are also working on their next album which is due to be released in the middle of the summer.
In September, Martin and Alicia will be back on tour with “China Girl” and until then will spend their summer on the island, entertaining us all with their acoustic sound. Should you be interested in hiring Martin and Alicia for private events, candlelight concerts or local gigs, get in touch with them through their website https://de.alma-acoustic.com. Their latest album “Gracias a la vida” is available on Spotify or on iTunes or search for them on YouTube. Their next album is due to be released this summer and Celebrity Magazine will have all the latest news and updates in our summer edition. IBIZA - WAIT...WHAT?! with Mikey Slade
Spring has finally sprung as the landscape of the Balearics biota goes from winter beige & greys to a full bloom colour fest, and with the fantastic news that the clubs will now be opening from April what exactly is in store for the extended Ibiza 2022 party calendar? More of that in a bit, as firstly I would like to welcome my new co-writing partner, record selector and one of the original Wait What? Ibiza DJ’s, Bekka Rawkins. Bekka has been pivotal in building the Wait What? brand and taking it from being the new kid on the block to the next hot ticket to ride. So over to Bekka to give you the meat and two veg of what’s in store… Hello readers, and thanks Mikey for inviting me to entertain you with tales from the Wait What? crypt and other White Island party gossip! A Wait What? phenomenon has been blowing up in the last eight months, the phone hasn’t stopped ringing and floods of emails keep rolling in, all wanting a piece of the Wait What? rainbow. Kicking off the party calendar is a new collaboration that is sure to explode over in the Balearic waters at some point; DJ Cristian Varela & DJ Manager Lynn Cosgrave are bringing together the world of techno (traditionally a heteronormative clubbing space) and our queer house and disco party, Wait What? under one roof by inviting us to host our own room at Black Codes which is label-boss Cristian Varela’s new residency at Lakota in Bristol. Next up is Wait What?’s third birthday party which will be celebrated in three different locations; Bristol, Brighton and at our beloved mother ship, the Sunrise Bar in Ibiza Town. We will be showcasing our newest Wait What? DJ talents such as Mental Genius, Fainting Goat, Boy Corduroy, Oli Lektric, The Bristol CROTCH Family and our youngest of the Wait What? DJ family, sixteen year old Who’s Hanks? as well as our more seasoned Wait What? residents such as myself, Mikey Slade, Agent KoKo and S/A/M. Our star Drag Queens, UGLY and Jonny Hooley will no doubt also be poking their faces in somewhere (or 26 | CELEBRITY
someone) alongside our other Wait What? DJs and hosts who have played a big part in Wait What?’s ascent. We also have our own stage at the Hitchin Dance All-dayer Festival in England alongside heavyweights Kings of Tomorrow - but the biggie is our invitation to close the San Antonio Ibiza Pride celebrations on the main stage on Saturday 11th June with Wait What? DJ’s Scott Gray & Alex Hinohouse which will also be Alex’s fourth Ibiza Pride. Wait What? ’s Graphic Art Rat aka Juan Pedro
Not only are our Wait What’s DJs and drag hosts making waves across the UK and Europe but Wait What?’s Graphic Art Rat aka Juan Pedro Checa Noguera is the graphic designer and artist responsible for the amazing brand imagery that has contributed to Wait What?’s hot rise in clubland. Juan Pedro (who is also a professional male model) studied Interior Design at Bristol University & is currently studying a Masters Degree in Interior Architecture at Madrid University. It’s his tongue-in-cheek pop art style posters of iconic, and sometimes controversial celebrities that have grabbed people’s attention so much so that one of the UK’s leading pop art specialists, Subversion Gallery in Glasgow, now has Juan Pedro on its books as one of their freshest artists they represent. What makes Juan’s art stand out is his clever and seamless blend of gorgeous colours and attention to detail that draws the perceiver into the Graphic Art Rat world by either putting a smile on your face or more often than not, slapping you in the face with a great big, fat, uncontrollable belly laugh! Check out his Donald Trump and Vicky Pollard hilarious triumph on Instagram!

MENORCA MOMENTS in assosiation with
Menorca – Food Glorious Food! I can’t believe it’s three months since I last sat down to write my column and already four months have passed since we moved to this beautiful island. Time has flown by in a whirlwind full of discovery, seasonal celebrations, visiting friends, new business ventures and the purchase of a new home which will be our project over the coming months! Despite our hectic lives, the island is certainly enjoying a quiet hiatus before preparing for what I am sure will be a very busy summer. I find myself using the phrase ‘poc a poc’ (little by little) even more than I did in Mallorca as everything definitely goes at a slower pace here and everywhere closes for long lunches and the restaurants that are always busy. This nicely leads me into the subject of my column today - food!

Did you know that Menorca has been awarded the title of European Region of Gastronomy 2022? Neither did I and it certainly makes me happy as it will give us the opportunity to really get to know and understand what makes gastronomy a cornerstone of this little island’s economy and culture over the coming year through all the different events that will be taking place. Menorca has a host of products with their coveted award of ‘denominación de origen’ (designation of origin) including the famous Mahon cheese, cured meats, handmade liquors, gin, pastries and wines. These have been recognised over the years through the inherited traditions, creativity, passion and hard work of the local businesses, independent farmers and artisans whilst being influenced by the different cultures
that have lived on the island over its long history. Yes – it was the Brits that started the gin-making along with the introduction of plum cake, puddings and butter for cooking! The other focus within the island’s gastronomy is the drive for sustainability and caring for the environment. Km 0 is a large part of the island’s success and you will see that represented if you go shopping at the local markets and supermarkets. So if you are a true foodie, when and what should you be planning to visit here? Check out these two websites with all the updated details giving a month by month guide to events. www. menorcaregiongastronomica.com and www.europeanregionofgastronomy.org. You will find details of all the different fairs taking place including tapas, wine and cheese. There are gastronomic weeks whereby participating restaurants offer selected menus to promote the local cuisine. Tasting workshops and cooking classes open to the public, cultural events and competitions. I can’t wait to go along to as many as possible and show visitors and friends what is on offer. The most popular events are taking place in spring and autumn when the island is least busy. Remember, if planning a visit to Mahon, do allow time to visit the stunning Hauser and Wirth Gallery on the Illa del Rei located in the impressive harbour. It opens in the spring until the end of October and this year the exhibition is by the artist Rashid Johnson. The gallery has just been crowned ‘Best Art Destination in 2022’ by Wallpaper Design Awards. I have a feeling this is just the first of many awards for this unique gallery. Do pop into my little boutique shop Estudio 3 de Maó and say ‘hola’ as I would love to meet you and hear about your own Menorquin experiences…

Menorca - ¡Comida, gloriosa comida!
Me encantará conoceros y que compartáis conmigo vuestras experiencias menorquinas. CELEBRITY | 29

AYDIN ISRAEL
Aydin Israel is an emerging South African rapper who grew up in Mallorca, Spain. This talented recording artist also boasts an entrepreneurial side as three years ago he founded Twelve Productions Entertainment, aged just 20. Having been born into a family of singers, dancers and performers, young Aydin has cultivated much of his music experience under the bright lights of the stage, and as such, he expanded his music resume by dropping his first commercial releases soon after forming Twelve Productions. Today, we’re going to highlight one of Aydin’s stand out tracks titled “I Am Everything” which channels the quintessential sound and vibe of what many consider the glory days of hip-hop, the 1990s. The vibe of ‘I Am Everything” is reminiscent of that period in hip-hop as it is driven by a potent boombap drum track layered with a cryptic yet melodic piano riff and what sounds like some type of horn or wind instrument masterfully injected into the track every fourth bar. It creates a perceived dramatic effect at the end of each bar that Aydin delivers crisply. And oh yes…the bars!!! Aydin’s vocal performance is top-notch in capturing the bold, confident lyricism he puts forth in “I Am Everything”. His voice projects a selfassuredness that is genuine and far from contrived. You can hear it clearly in his cadence and tone as he flawlessly delivers a pristine collection of bars that hit the mark on all aspects. Throughout the track, Aydin consistently drops an appealing blend of clever wordplay, slick metaphors 32 | CELEBRITY
and punchlines that grab your attention on impact. It’s this combination of factors in particular that really conjure up images of the 90’s hip-hop in my mind when listening to “I Am Everything” as the lyrical content and flow of a rapper took priority over the beat. Big kudos go out to Aydin on this retro/ contemporary banger. “I Am Everything” is available on all streaming platforms including YouTube and Spotify. Make sure to stream it, add it to your playlist and save it to your Favourites Library! Share this tune on your socials well. The hip-hop world needs to get familiar with the name Aydin Israel as he’s a fresh and fast-rising face in the industry. Enjoy the track!

Island Spirit
The welcome transition from winter to spring, and from restrictions to freedom, we now emerge with new goals and mindsets. Here, Jamie and I continue our holistic promise to you by suggesting helpful ways to enrich your mind, body and soul. In this edition, we start by introducing you to the incredible benefits of Shamanic energy healing which, along with several other therapies, Jamie encompasses within his bespoke meditation classes at Portals de Yoga, Portals Nous. SMUDGING WITH SAGE Spiritualists and scientific researchers have observed that sage can clear up to 94 per cent of airborne bacteria in a space by disinfecting the air. When sage is burned, it releases negative ions, which is linked to putting people into a positive mood. The Latin word for sage “salvia” comes from the word “heal”.
SHAMANISM; RELIGIOUS BELIEF The practice of Shamanism reaches back to the dawn of time. Shamanism is a system of religious practice. Historically, it is often associated with indigenous and tribal societies and involves the belief that shamans, with a connection to the “otherworld”, have the power to heal the sick, communicate with spirits, and escort souls to the afterlife although shamans’ repertoires may vary from one culture to the next. The term shamanism comes from the Manchu-Tungus word šaman. While Western medicine tends to focus on curing us on a physical level, the goal of shamanic energy medicine is to heal our being at every level, including the physical body. Energy Medicine works directly with the Luminous Energy Field (LEF), also known as a halo or aura, an invisible matrix that surrounds and informs our physical, emotional, psychic and spiritual world. It contains our template and encodes how we live, how we age, how we heal and how we might die. With this, we empower clients and loved ones to exude exceptional health by making energetic, emotional, nutritional and lifestyle interventions, so that our health span equals our lifespan. 36 | CELEBRITY
The ritual of sage burning has its roots in Native American tradition. Today, people burn sage and other holy herbs to cleanse a space or environment of negative energy as well as to generate wisdom and clarity. Clearing spaces from negative energies is another part of Jamie’s extensive repertoire. Our world is full of positive and negative energies. Bad energy has a way of wrapping itself around the people and places it comes into contact with, in the hope that it can stay. This is why quick, deliberate action is needed to remove them and to keep them away. We must be careful that we do not become a recipient or a transmitter of them. Here are some signs that negative energies can be around: • Health problems not responding to treatments. • Feeling lethargic all the time. • Physical injuries not responding to treatments. • Uncomfortable feelings in your home, or workplace. • Your property is just not selling when so many people seem interested. • Repetitive negative thoughts towards addictions and suicide. • Feeling emotional and tearful for no reason. • Feeling confused and drained. • Things going wrong all at once. • Rooms that feel cold, or hot or just not right. It’s not that we intentionally exude negative energies, but it shows us how complicated our chakras really are. It is important to remember that the quicker you deal with these energies, the better. We will be featuring and working closely throughout this

year with several experts who specialise in complex therapies within the mental health sector. Combining both a medical and holistic approach, our aim is to source for you the very best professional therapists to suit your individual, specific needs. Please do not hesitate to contact us for any further information regarding mental health so that we can connect you to the right people. INTUITION The definition of intuition is an immediate understanding or knowing something without reasoning. An example is the concept of “love at first sight” which connotates an overwhelming instantaneous attraction. Intuition is a tool that all of us have. Some people suggest that it’s a mystical power. Others would suggest that it’s merely our subconscious trying to tell us something. Regardless of the source, we all have that little voice that tries to tell us things from time to time. Follow Jamie online via the provided links for a variety of weekly guides and workshops. As we get older, we often learn to ignore that little voice. We turn to logic and focus on being practical. But, we’ve experienced a lot over the years and there is some part of our brain that has accumulated a tremendous amount of wisdom. Listening to that little voice can be a personally positive rewarding choice. Here are simple steps that are sure to increase your intuitive powers; 1. Meditation 2. Observe your energy levels. Pay attention to whether being around someone makes you feel tired and drained or energetic and lively. 3. Capture your brain flashes, keep a bedside journal.
MEDITATION Meditation has been around for a long time. The first written evidence of this was back in 1500BC. There are as many types and variations to meditation as there are ways to sing a song. There are also as many benefits including enhanced self-awareness, improved focus, memory and attention span. Sleep, pain and blood pressure control. You will learn how to harness inner strength and clarity from meditating; this will enable you to handle life’s many challenges successfully. It is a practice that takes time and commitment. Four minutes a day for five days of the week…and that’s just to start. Meditation also creates more space in your days and more peace in your moments. It is also an excellent tool for coping with stress. Visit and subscribe to Jamie’s online YouTube daily classes. Here you will enjoy free guided meditations and breathing exercises to enable you to progress from beginner to more advanced practices. With meditation, there is no “one size fits all”.You will, in time, learn what suits you and your lifestyle. Use meditation as a tool to move through overthinking and self-doubt, to help boost creativity, as well as a myriad of other beneficial uses in your day to day life. Meditation in conjunction with Shamanic Energy Medicine is a hugely powerful medium. One that gives you the ability to facilitate the elimination of diseases (dis-ease) and restore harmony. Meditation techniques help a person achieve a calm state of mind without having to resort to drugs for peace and relaxation. Every step to meditation is done in the mind. It is essential that you keep on practising meditation until you have conditioned your mind to instantaneously achieve that calm state just by thinking about it. A characteristic of intuition is that it has a soft voice most of the time that can be challenging to notice when our minds are busy. Meditation is a great way to clear the mind and make room for our intuition to come shining through. A simple technique to clear your mind is to simply count your breaths and attempt to stay focused on your breathing. Avoid letting your mind wander…

SOLLER VALLEY STORIES
by Soller Shirley Shirley Roberts
SO MUCH TO LOOK FORWARD TO THIS SUMMER… The Soller Valley is ready for the summer of 2022. New restaurants, new hotels and many of the places which Soller is renowned for are ready to offer a great experience this year. So much has been learned in the last two years and now is the chance for it to all come together. The Soller Valley is a foodie paradise and the chefs create the kind of experience savoured in the memory box. To sit under the stars of a warm summer night eating exquisite food and watching the sea lap the shore is a dream come true. This year we celebrate 25 years since the Soller Tunnel was opened. In the days before that, the Soller Valley was accessed by the 52 hairpin bends of the Coll mountain. These
38 | CELEBRITY
days, sightseers drive that route for pleasure but not as the normal access route. The Soller tunnel opened up the glory of the Valley to all and a great bus route was installed to make life even easier. The opening of the tunnel introduced a new generation to the area and the number continues to grow. There are still those who like to arrive on the Soller train which has been driving the tracks for the past 100 years. The routes into Soller are experiences in themselves. Then the pleasure of the Soller Tram awaits you to take you down to the sea. So many pleasures in the journeys of our small world. The horseshoe bay is there where the tram stops. A cluster of beaches starting from the Repic end of the bay running down to the fishing port. Everyone has their favourite place to be, especially as the sun goes down
and the magnificent light show of the sunset takes place. To be in the Port of Soller as the sun sets is a magnificent privilege and should be on your holiday ‘to-do’ list. At the very end of the Port, where the fishing boats come in, the Santa Catalina area awaits you. Home to some of the finest restaurants in Mallorca and to the Museum of the Sea. Also, of course, home to fine yachts and Mallorquin Llaut sailing boats. The sea is busy in the summer months with many using the Port as their base for their days on the water. UNESCO knew what it was doing when it made Soller the City of Culture for the Tramuntana. This award brings many, for the first time, to look at our world. Once is never enough and they return often once they have found our version of Shangri-La.
SO MUCH TO LOOK FORWARD TO THIS SUMMER…
BOATS, BIKES AND AUTOMOBILES by Hamish Goddard
When Sophia Met Luciano… There is something undeniably special about Italian motorbikes (perhaps Italian anything), but in similar ways that a Ferrari will always emote more soul than a just-ascapable McLaren, a Ducati sports bike will invariably do the same to any equivalents from the major manufacturers in Japan, Austria and Germany. Exotica just drips out of them in noise, looks and performance. Whilst some of the latest sports bikes from elsewhere can look quite racey, menacing and be quicker, perhaps only MV Augustas have matched Ducati in terms of pure sports exotica rolling out of Italy on two wheels. These are the soulful Ferrari equivalents. So it was that my lovely friend Jonny, relatively new to motorcycles but a man of immediate good taste in them, bought two amazing bikes on which we went for a grand
42 | CELEBRITY
day out towards the south of Mallorca. The first was the latest 955cc ‘Baby’ Panigale V2, as other models in the range have expanded to more powerful V4s. Whilst the bigger bikes are ultimately quicker, they are perhaps less user-friendly than their gorgeous little sister. Aside from that, there has never been anything child-like about a bike that puts out 155 horsepower when it weighs only a little more than that in kilograms. We remain in the territory of super-fast motorbikes. The second bike was about as opposite as you can get whilst still having the basics of two wheels and a seat; the mighty 1.4 litre V-twin Moto Guzzi Flying Fortress. This is Moto Guzzi’s Pavarotti to Ducati’s Loren - a shatteringly loud, enormous and stunning two-wheeled Batmobile that is
otherwise defined in US terms as a ‘Bagger’ (although the bags, tank and even the wheels are in beautiful carbon fibre). The bike is aimed at the American market and the domination of the heavy-engineered Harley Davidsons in this sector with their twin-pot power cruisers, some of which are now over two litres. As Carol Shelby, the father of the AC Cobra said, there is no substitute for engine capacity. In summary, I loved them both for entirely different reasons and it would always depend if you’re alone on the twisties or taking the lady out for a Sunday lunch. An Homage to Lotus In spite of my love for the muscled American V8s of Carol Shelby, I have also been a fan of their quintessential opposite. Lotus Cars was created by the English inventor and
engineer Colin Chapman in 1952, under his famous ethos that “adding power makes you faster on the straights. Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere… “. Never a truer word… This led to some scary times in Formula One in the 1960s, a period during which Lotus had huge success on their way to becoming one of the most successful teams in history. The most driven racers would invariably want to compete in cars that would win, accepting that Lotuses could be frequently under-engineered, fast but fragile. Chapman’s road cars were also designed for their handling and road holding - the most famous early model being the Lotus Seven, a small and very simple 1.2 litre 2-seater launched originally in 1957. It has been in continuous manufacture, as well as available in kit car form, from 1957 right through to
the present day from Caterham Cars Ltd, who bought the manufacturing rights to the car itself in 1973. Since then - and now broadly known just as a Caterham Seven the car has remained simple, minimalist and light, whilst more and more power has been squeezed from whatever would fit under the long thin aluminium hood. The latest of these are the 620S and 620R models, the fastest cars they have ever made. Again, we’re into scary figures here, with 310HP from the 2-litre supercharged Ford Duratec engine for their 610kg dry weight - the R version having a less road-friendly sequential box, stiffer suspension and a track day set up. I must be hanging around with the right people as I was invited to test my friend Paul’s 620S and was utterly blown away by it. With face altering acceleration throughout
the rev range, one arrives at corners very much sooner and quicker than it’s possible to get used to in just an hour or so. It will get to 60mph in less than three seconds, a whole second faster than a Eu320,000 Ferrari F8 Tributo and will do 155 mph at the very far end. I’m glad I have no idea what that feels like, although there’s not much enjoyment in top speeds anyway as the aero is still from the 1950s - and feels it. All the heart-stopping bonkersness is to be had in the short straits between one corner and another - and in the corners themselves. For the ultimate A to B car that is more visceral and immersive than anything else on the road - and at around a tenth of the price of a supercar with even vaguely comparable performance - look no further…

CELEBRITYY CELEBRIT Property Market Update Santa Maria - 2.895m
Year in Review 2021 2021 was a good year in the Balearics for real estate sales. Although the official statistics from the Spanish Association of Notaries are not available as yet (since they are only published half-yearly due in May), the figures released by the National Statistics Institute for property transactions reflect a nationwide 25.8% increase in the sale of homes compared to 2020, with the Balearics showing a 32.4 per cent increase. In fact, figures showed for December 2021 there was a 76.1% increase in the Balearics - the highest percentage increase in the country. This means nationally the most sales since 2007. Putting that into monetary figures for the first half of the year, real estate transactions in the Balearics Islands amounted to 390 million euros, compared to 190 million in the first six months of 2019 and 212 million euros in the first half of 2020. According to figures provided by some of the larger Estate Agents on the island the strongest nationality of foreign buyers snapping up luxury homes were from Germany, with the UK coming second, followed by France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland and Austria. The Start of 2022 The start of 2022 commences on very unstable ground with yet another Coronavirus cry of fear with the new 46 | CELEBRITY
Omicron variant exploding around the world. Fortunately for us all, this variant has proven milder and less impactful on our lives, with governments now starting to reduce their restrictions slowly but surely. With Boris Johnson making huge changes to the UK policies reducing restrictions completely for vaccinated as well as substantially reducing requirements for the unvaccinated, only requiring predeparture tests and PCR tests from the end of the month. Learning to live with COVID is the new catchphrase! As for the EU, we’re not quite there yet, but great news for British holidaymakers and non-EU travellers since the EU has unveiled plans to permit all fully-vaccinated Brits (and WHO recognised vaccine regions) to travel to Europe without pre-departure tests. Slowly but surely life seems to be getting back to the “new” normal. Spring has now definitely arrived in Mallorca with sunny days and lovely warm daytime temperatures. The COVID numbers have dropped significantly with Spain no longer a high-risk country since February 20th. No masks are required outdoors and vaccine passports are no longer required to enter restaurants or bars. It’s truly a fabulous time to enjoy the island, with stunning walks, hiking and cycling around the island. Yes, property prices may have risen in
Mallorca substantially over the last 5 years, but according to figures, prices are still below the 2007 bubble. Compare this to the huge hikes in the UK property market in the countryside, and with the world now readjusting to living with COVID, it might be the right time to take that plunge and purchase that holiday home you and your family have all been waiting for. The luxury new-build, sea view property market is always a strong one, but interest in more rustic fincas and property in the rural countryside of the Island has not been as strong for many a year. One such property just recently listed is on the outskirts of Santa Maria, only 15 minutes from Palma, yet set in complete peace and tranquillity of the Mallorca countryside. A beautiful fully renovated stone-built house, offering 469 sqm of constructed area and listed at 1.8 million euros. With four bedrooms in the main house, it offers a beautiful space for the family with a lovely pool area and several covered terraces, plus a completely independent guest house for visiting family and friends. With over 7000 sqm of land, there is currently an area for stables and riding ring for those with equestrian interests. For more information review Property Ref 22001 at www.mjcassociates.net. 2022 has started well in general. In Mallorca we feel blessed to be sitting in our beautiful island bubble, with over 300 days of sunshine, more than 260 beaches, beautiful landscapes and a great way of life away from the mayhem and madness of the rest of the world! HOMES & PROPERTIES
Interior Design and Beautiful Flower Arrangements in Mallorca Living on Mallorca, many have us are surrounded by natural beauty and greenery and the flowers bloom on the island throughout the year. But how do we bring this natural beauty into our homes? By Ben Mulvey
Annhild Ellwanger is a professional florist and interior designer that has been in Mallorca for the last three and a half years. Her beautiful shop in Son Bugadelles has everything you need to make your home beautiful and specialises in bespoke floral arrangements for large houses and events. Annhild works closely with her clients by providing consultations in their properties to best identify which flowers would work in their homes, the size of the project, and to get a feel for how the finished project will look. Her vision covers everything from the shape, size and type of the flowers to the pots that they will be displayed in. “Real flowers are difficult to source on the island and can be very expensive. Also, they do not last very long. I use a combination of dried and artificial flowers to create my piece,” says Annhild. 50 | CELEBRITY
Annhild’s clients are as varied as the beautiful pieces of art that she creates. She has worked with some ultra-high net worth individuals in some of the most prestigious addresses on the island as well as several restaurants in Portals, Andratx and Palma. She starts by taking photographs of the space and designing bouquets, plant arrangements and ceramics before presenting them to her clients. Originally due to open before the pandemic, Annhild’s showroom and store finally opened at the end of 2021 is an oasis of taste and beauty. Not only does she have examples of her work with flowers, but she also stocks high-end, beautiful products for the home that she ships in from only the best suppliers in Europe. Her candles are some of the best in the world and the clay that is used for the
ceramics is sourced from a master of clay that she works closely with. Her candles are among the best in the world, and the ceramic items come from master workshops and are individually handmade for each customer Those of you that have visited Annhild’s shop may have sampled some of her amazing imported tea and coffee which she says is the best in Europe. When the Celebrity Team visited her we were lucky enough to sample some and it is, indeed, delicious! SOS ANIMALS- CALVIA
Are you a cat or a dog person? Most of the western world seem to fall into one of these categories. Having a domestic pet is something many people love to have especially in the UK, Europe and North America -we are nations of animal lovers. By Bev Wellington
But what happens when there are more animals than people to take care of them? I have yet to visit a country where every cat and dog is cared for. There are so many strays, so many uncared for animals - so what do we do to solve this problem? We can either face this massive problem and act on it or we can bury it, dismiss it, ignore it. What we maybe should be asking ourselves is do we care for animals and how much do we care? In Mallorca, there is a very big challenge with stray cats. At SOS Calvia, one of the animal shelters on Mallorca, they are trying to help with this challenge. Run with scant volunteers and little funding, individuals dedicate their time and their love of animals to care for hundreds of cats (and dogs), finding them foster and forever homes - this is no easy process. Some of the cats have been at SOS for over a year. Space is scarce for the animals that can be domesticated. The cats that cannot be domesticated live in the colonies. If left too long in cages within the shelter they often become introverted and averse to human contact. This leaves SOS with no other choice but to add them to 52 | CELEBRITY
the colony where there is little or no hope of adoption, or worse have to euthanise them. The problem of over cat population is not a new one, their gestation period is short and litters can be multiple. It’s ‘kitten season now which means only one thing - multitudes of babies! Overwhelming for all shelters between now and September, they face the daunting reality of what to do with the strays. In an ideal world, we would have no hunger, no wars, no poverty, no illness … no strays! So how do we create an ideal world - one that at present is fraught with stress, anxiety, and division? We start by imagining - if we have the belief system that we create our own reality (which I believe we do, both individually and collectively) then we can start to create a new way of how we care and protect all animals. We are the stewards of animals here on our home – Earth. Isn’t it time we thought about this problem differently? If we want to help change the predicament we face with overpopulation and lack of resources, we must dream a new dream for them and ourselves. Can we start to dream
a world into being that has compassion and love woven into everything we do. We become a true community where we help our neighbours, our coworkers, our elders, our children and of course all animals. Right now we desperately need more awareness of the immediate task of helping to cut down the numbers of stray cats - we can help do this by trapping the feral cats in our area. Traps have to be set out cats get caught inside the traps taken to the vet and neutered. This can be a lengthy process if the clever puss avoids stepping on the close door plate, eats the food and runs off! So patience and time from the volunteers are paramount! Once neutered, the cats are released either back into their area or into a local cat colony where they are checked and fed on a regular basis. The running and monitoring of the colonies is done by volunteers, some of which food is provided for by the local councils if they are part of the cat colony programme. If not, some are individually fed by the kindness of the public. This is where you come in - they need funding!
Vets need paying! Shelters are run on a shoestring and that has to change. Grants need to be radically increased to cope with the cost of traps, food and litter, vet bills and medication, electricity, water and basic running costs of the shelters. Your contribution can really make a difference. Every cent will be used solely for the welfare of the animals. It doesn’t matter how much one can give, all funding will help make a big change. Many people contributing can soon add up! Thank you from all at SOS Animals Calvia.

“Ah, He/She is getting old!” I’ve just had my birthday, I’m in my late 20’s!! (very late, actually 50’s). So I’ve got used to things going wrong and other things hurting. And our pets are the same. These “things” are better detected early and then we can do something to help, cure or slow down the process. These problems can be many and varied; I would bore you too much if I mentioned them all. The most common, which we can all relate to (if you are over 40), is arthritis or arthrosis. In fact, 80% of cats over ten years old are suffering from arthritis. This seems very high but cats are experts at hiding problems or illnesses. And 60-80% of dogs suffer arthritis too when they are over 8-10 years old. These conditions obviously cause pain and reduced quality of life. We can detect these problems using X-rays, MRIs, etc. but a pet that is “slowing down” may in fact be suffering pain. So a good veterinary examination is essential. What can we do if we diagnose arthritis? In the past, the options were limited. Now, the treatment can be complex and multimodal: 1. Steroids (which we try to avoid now because of their side-effects). 2. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These are the most commonly prescribed and very useful. Even these have side effects. But science has improved them so much that they only target the pain and do not damage the stomach, intestines and kidneys as the old drugs did. 3. Chondroprotectors. These are supplements to help restore synovial fluid (liquid in joints) and the building blocks of cartilage within the joints. 4. “New generation” drugs. Modern science has even produced “injections” which can help rebuild cartilage or others which produce antibodies against the inflammatory enzymes within joints. And only administered once per month. Another treatment is a tablet which lasts a whole week and gives great pain relief. 5. Physiotherapy can do wonders to exercise and mobilise muscles and joints. We are lucky to have access to a great physio centre. Controlling their exercise and especially their weight is super-important. This is difficult for us and our pets, especially as we get older (sob, sob, sob). I already take the chondroprotectors for my knees. Keep fit and young! Any inquiries, please contact the Clínica Veterinaria Bendinat.preventative medicine, including injections for many of our clients.
Medicamentos anti-inflamatorios no esteroideos (AINEs).

Many locals and expats in Mallorca are either self-employed and enjoy making the most of working remotely or for themselves, or else own their own businesses. Aside from the bureaucracy that we all battle through when we work for ourselves, it is important to know what insurances we need to protect our businesses, our income and our employees. By Ben Mulvey
Darryl’s FAQs Have you thought about how to protect your business? The first thing that needs to be assessed when insuring a business is what exactly the business does. Who are your clients and where are they? Do you have an office, shop or premises? Do you have staff? With this information and any other specific concerns you might have, your insurance advisor can identify the risks of the business and look for a way to protect them should something happen. What type of things can put your business at risk? Firstly, like with a home, an office, shop or premises needs to be insured whether you are tenant or owner, including all of its contents. If there is machinery or office equipment that goes wrong then this could hinder your day-to-day business. Or if stock or products are stolen or damaged, this could result in a loss of earnings. Finally, if the premises should flood or catch fire, you could be out of business for some time until this is fixed. You can protect against this to cover fixed expenses, and the loss of earnings - think of it like life insurance for your business. What liabilities can you insure against? Public and operational liability - This insurance, quite simply, covers third parties. It is in place to ensure that should something happen to a customer, visitor or anyone else whilst on your premises, you are covered. Also, if you work outside the office, those damages caused to other people or premises i.e by an electrician or a plumber are also covered. This is also required by law for holiday homes if someone is injured whilst staying.

Employer liability - This covers possible indemnities you’d be liable to pay to your employees, should something happen to them at work. It includes accidental death, injury or disability. It is most important in ‘risky’ jobs such as factory work, construction and yachting. It is vital that businesses know what the insurance limits are to ensure that they are protected, this is often under-insured, particularly in the construction industry. Tenants liability - This insurance is in place to cover the business premises in which you are tenant, in the event that you cause damage by fire or water, as you’d need to repay this to the landlord. Product or ‘past work’ liability - This protects against compensation claims due to faulty products or workmanship that have caused damage to a third party after the work was finished or delivered. One example would be if you were to serve food and someone gets food poisoning.Professional liability - Mainly in place to insure professionals with qualifications. If somebody is injured whilst you are working with them i.e. personal trainers, or your advice causes indirect damage through negligence or omissions i.e. lawyers, real estate agents, or tax
advisors. Mistakes can happen at work so this protects you against claims from third parties. It is worth remembering that liability insurance always covers the legal costs to defend yourself even when it’s not clear whether you are liable or not. Are business insurances tax-deductible? We all dread the times of the year when we have to deal with our not-so-friendly neighbourhood tax man and look for ways to make sure we save as much money as possible. All of the insurances mentioned above are fully tax-deductible in your annual returns as they are related to your business activity. Plus, also worth noting is that private medical insurance for you, your partner, and children under 25 that live with you is also tax-deductible with a maximum of 500€ per person and year. Regardless of what type of business you have, it is recommended that you protect it to make sure that you are always able to work and alleviate any possible risks.
