PHILLIP WITCOMB / ROBERTO SENDOYA ESCOBAR
First born son of Escobar Imagine at the age of 24 being told by your adoptive father that you are the biological son of the world’s most notorious drug lord. Worst still, that your life is in imminent danger requiring 24/7 security. For this is the bombshell dropped on artist Phillip Witcomb, on discovering he was christened Roberto Sendoya Escobar. The eldest son of Colombian Pablo Escobar, narco-terrorist and murderer of incalculable thousands. Phillip was born outside Bogota in 1965 to Maria Luisa Sendoya, an innocent 14 year-old, his father 16 year-old Pablo Escobar.
Text and Photos by Laura Stadler
“Suddenly, all the gruesome images that haunted my childhood nightmares slotted into place,” he explained. “I also understood why the subjects of my paintings had always tended towards creating utopia, exploring a peaceful natural world as I would want it. In direct contrast to the trauma of my past.” Following a shootout by special troops, in which only baby Roberto Sendoya survived, he was rescued from a Bogota orphanage by childless British couple Joan and Patrick Witcomb, a debonair mysterious James Bond character. His name changed to Phillip, he had no idea of his true background. But it did not take long for his biological father to locate him. Even when Phillip was sent to a British boarding school for his own safety, he remained unaware of the danger. Thus, he grew up loving rugby and cricket, a world away from his past. Yet even the powerful and resourceful agent, Patrick Witcomb could not protect him forever. His extraordinary life has been more dramatic than fiction. Yet only now at the age of 55 has Phillip finally been able to write a book. Indeed, Son of Escobar blows the lid off a clandestine secret world few are alive to remember. “Apart from my half-siblings there is virtually no one left with intimate memories spent with Pablo Escobar and the Medellin Cartel. Believe me, I do not endorse his murderous behaviour. He was a despicable criminal serial killer. Even as a child, albeit feeling a weird attraction, I remember sensing a menace emanating from him. I always felt uncomfortable in his presence, especially when he held my hand. Yet I would like to believe that even he, felt some love for his children. The book chronicles it all. I started drafting the book after the most cataclysmic year of my life. In 1993 I lost
my adoptive father to whom I was devoted, my biological father and my lovely wife Sue, mother of my two children. Through the mist of depression, I had a eureka moment, when I decided I would get everything out of my head onto paper. However, not only am I dyslexic but English is my second language. I can only describe it as being in the foothills of Mount Everest and trying to painfully climb without equipment. But I did manage
to store some disjointed memories before I gave up. It was only when I arrived in Mallorca in June 2014 with my second wife Julie that I found the mental clarity to write. We had travelled the world to find where we wanted to settle. We had considered the Caribbean or Florida, but Mallorca had it all plus the benefits of being such a short flight to Europe. Amid the tranquillity of

this paradise, the pages of my book soon filled effortlessly as I poured out the years of madness. It has been a true healing process. For two and a half years I would write all morning, Then I would go onto the terrace to read the day’s work to my wife, who would add some gentle suggestions. I realised early that I would need to make the characters three dimensional. So, I have wracked my brains for all my childhood perceptions, including sounds and smells to build into each memory. In fact, the early part of the book is seen through my child’s eyes. Being driven to school in armoured cars, with dark green bullet-proof windows, felt completely normal as I had no idea I was different. The danger and horrific things I saw buried deep within. Indeed, those who read the book may find themselves questioning who really were the bad guys? Yet, historical emotion never leaves you. When a child suffers traumas it never really goes away.” Thus, the peace of lockdown did not phase Phillip. “An artist’s life is one of isolation, endless days creating in my studio. So, except for the fear of running out of paint, lockdown did not change anything for me. I have painted since childhood. My parents recognised and nurtured my talent. In fact in 1969, after my mother bought me a book of Leonardo De Vinci’s portraits, I incredibly managed to recreate one perfectly on a wall while I was apparently sleep walking. Obviously, she was not too happy about the 6 | CELEBRITY
wall.” Although better known for his lavish colours, landscapes and vibrant sea views, Phillip is content to carry out commissions for portraits including pets. He has also been charitably restoring damaged masterpieces from war torn Syria. “As a hyper-realist artist, I am particularly proud to have studied under Roy Reynolds. The last disciple of the renowned generations of Reynolds, great-great grandson of Sir Joshua Reynolds who died in 1792. He taught me the techniques and unique spirit of the great masters. How to mix glazes and apply layers to achieve luminosity.” Employing the unusual technique of working under a magnifying glass, it takes Phillip around six weeks to complete a painting. Phillip has found peace and contentment in Mallorca doing what he enjoys most. “Sometimes when the days are at their darkest and the future looks bleak, I look back at that little boy from Colombia. I think about all the pain he suffered and thank God I’m still here to tell the tale.” Son of Escobar: First Born can be preordered on Amazon before its August 6th launch or The Universal Bookstore in Portals Nous where copies will be available. A percentage of the proceeds will go towards Phillip’s chosen charities helping those with drug addiction. A full catalogue of Phillip’s artworks can be viewed on his website www.phillipwitcomb.co.uk

inspiration to the entertainment industry which is why I reached out and asked her to be my Q&A guest for Access All Areas. As we are increasing our distribution of Celebrity Magazine to Ibiza, I thought it would be a perfect way to pay homage to the legendary voice of house music.
Mention the name, Barbara Tucker, and don’t be surprised if you hear the term, “dance music royalty” as one of the many positive affirmations that describe this unstoppable force. Barbara has gifted the dance music community with uplifting anthems such as ‘Beautiful People’, ‘Precious Love’, ‘I Get Lifted’, ‘Deep Inside’, ‘Stop Playing With My Mind’, and countless other floor fillers. As well as being a powerhouse vocalist, Barbara Tucker is also an activist and advocate for dance music. Hosting parties in New York and Ibiza, consulting with artists, staging, producing, dancing,

All this from someone who had her sights set more on being a teacher or a flight attendant! After contributing the vocals for the Harlequins Fours ‘Set It Off ’ club banger in 1985 “doors just kept on opening”, as Barbara puts it. Barbara has several new projects on the horizon, is still very active in her community church and is genuinely an all-round

IBIZA
Ibiza Then And Now with Judge Jules & Amanda O’Riordan The difference between the ‘old’ Ibiza and the new started as soon as one landed at the airport twenty years ago. Firstly, you were tired, as direct scheduled flights from the UK to the island only started in the late 90s. Before then, one needed to fly via Madrid or Barcelona, or take a charter flight, which wasn’t really do-able, as it restricted travellers to an exact seven day stay. Not much use for hop-in hop-out DJs.
One thing that has never changed are the nightclub billboards, visible as soon as one exits the airport. The difference now is that there are SO many more of them, lining the entire road from Ibiza Town to San Antonio. And THAT road. Back then it was a slow, single track road, anecdotally known to be the most dangerous in Europe. When it was redeveloped into a semi-motorway, just over ten years ago, the new road seemed like the embodiment of the ‘new’ Ibiza. Road casualties, particularly outside superclubs Amnesia and Privilege almost dried up overnight. Nevertheless, the charm of the old road’s traffic chaos on the journey from the airport was lost forever. We bought our first house in Ibiza in 1997, at a time when Ibiza’s property prices lagged substantially behind those in London, and the very favourable pound to peseta exchange rate made one’s money stretch even further. But a matter as seemingly straightforward as buying furniture was so 12 | CELEBRITY
much more complicated than in our home town of London. The choice wasn’t great, and none of the big chains like Descanshop or IKEA were on the island. Ibiza’s “small shop” culture was charming, but nevertheless it was a culture shock for big city dwellers like us, accustomed to a myriad of shops and delivery possibilities. How could one talk about Ibiza (new or old) without mentioning its clubs? And where does one start when comparing the island’s nightlife then and now? Back then, a ‘hippy’ rather than a corporate culture prevailed. Get to know someone behind the bar and one’s drinks measures increased significantly. VIP areas, whilst they still existed, represented a very small proportion of the square meterage of each of the discotheques. Whilst we arrived into Ibiza too late to experience the likes of Pacha, Ku and Amnesia ‘uncoverered’, i.e. without roofs (they were forced to ‘cover up’ in the mid 80s), the vibe was still very ‘free’ compared
to now. Closing times, if they existed in law at all, were rarely enforced. Dancing till dawn meant dancing until there were less than 100 in the venue, at which point the club closed, whether it was 7, 8, 9 or 10am. Furthermore, after hours venues could open without restriction (which isn’t legal any more). Those with the feet and adrenaline to carry on could rock up to Space at 10am, park directly outside and carry on, in a frenzy of 24/7 partying. That was Ibiza, from early June to late September. In 2020, Ibiza clubbing all seems rather ‘organised’ and corporate. Strictly regulated drinks measures, everyone out at 6am and none of the generally dishevelled chaos on the streets between 7 and 10am. Of course, one could argue that it’s what 2020 clubbers want. The growth in daytime (and not night-time) clubbing can be attributed to the pool parties of Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Experts will attest that today’s 20 somethings drink less and take less drugs
IBIZA
than their predecessors, so modern Ibiza’s mega daytime pool parties are catering for what people want. Finally, no piece about Ibiza would be complete without a nod to its restaurants. The “classics” of 20 years ago are largely still present on the island – e.g. Las Dos Lunas, La Brasa, Sa Capella, Ama Lur – but in 2020 the range of alternatives is dazzling.
Ibiza has always been a very strong spot for dining, comparing favourably to anywhere in the world. Whilst the influx of ‘VIPs’ hasn’t universally been a positive thing, it’s done wonders for the island’s culinary scene in 2020. There is nothing worse than being someone constantly moaning that “things aren’t as good as they used to be”. And that wouldn’t
be a fair accusation to level at Ibiza. In 2020, things are just different. Holiday locations are products, and like any product, holiday locations need to evolve and develop, in order to compete with locations elsewhere in the marketplace. And in 2020, Ibiza competes exceptionally well.

RHOC’s Hanna & Martin The “New Normal” The phrase ‘The New Normal’ has become a part of all of our daily conversations since lockdown and many of us are in the process of adjusting to a new way of living during these difficult times. Martin and Hanna from Real Housewives of Cheshire spoke to me about how they are adjusting to life post-lockdown.
Source: ITV
By Ben Mulvey
In our last conversation, Martin and Hanna told me how they were coping and what they were doing to keep busy during the lockdown. From filming the show from their home and operating the equipment themselves to keeping up with patients via social media, it seems that even when confined to the house this couple is always busy. Now that they are back at work, their pace is definitely increasing. “We have slowly started to get back to the ‘new normal’ with our work”, Hanna tells me. “I have had the clinic fully sanitised and socially distanced the waiting room so that it is safe for everyone and we are having to get used to working with full PPE which is certainly a different experience”. As Hanna’s clinic was closed for several months due to the pandemic, there is a huge backlog of patients in need of emergency dental treatments that she is working through as fast as she can. Using aerosolgenerating sprays for the treatments means that only she is working with limited staff as the rooms need to be left for an hour and disinfected between treatments. Martin has kept busy during lockdown with 14 | CELEBRITY
his fellowship in anti-ageing and functional medicine, which he has almost finished, and is now back at work seeing patients at his clinic, mainly for hormone treatments at the moment. He is fully booked from the beginning of July and is waiting for news from the British Government regarding the air corridors to fly back to the island. “I can’t wait to get back to Mallorca and see my patients. The flight is booked but I am waiting to hear about the quarantine on the UK side in the coming week”, says Martin. “We also have to make sure that we adhere to all of the protocols to make sure that everyone is safe but that is much easier with aesthetic medicine and the treatments we provide”. For those of you that follow the Real Housewives of Cheshire, you will have noticed that the last series was much shorter than usual due to social distancing measures and all of the cast had to film from home. The reunion episode was a different experience for all of them as it was, essentially, a Zoom call to talk about the series. “It was a very different experience but we enjoyed it. We are looking forward to getting
back to filming on the 24th of July although it will be very different again”, Hanna reveals. The show features plenty of swanky events and lots of lunching and brunching so with social distancing measures of one metre and new protocols for bars, restaurants and event spaces in the UK it is going to look very different from previous series. Aside from their respective clinics and their commitments with RHOC, the couple is also starting to do online courses for the Dr K Academy which has now moved online with Martin conducting the first course next week. Martin will be back on the island at the beginning of July if everything goes to plan and hopefully, Hanna can steal a few days away from her busy schedule before filming starts to enjoy a well-deserved break on our beautiful island. Dr Martin’s clinic, re-enhance in Santa Ponsa will be open for business from July with exact dates and times to be confirmed. In the meantime, find Hanna and Martin on social media or catch-up on the latest series of Real Housewives Of Cheshire on ITV Hub.

You Want the Authentic Mallorca? Live Like a Local! by
If there is one thing most of us Expats living on Mallorca try not to be: tourists. We want to live the authentic way and be part of our local community. The reality is often different as can be observed in any little bar on market day: Here the expats, there the locals. And in between: the big divide. How can we bridge it?
By Stephanie Horsman
Fall in love
LEARN SPANISH ON THE GO Many say the language barrier is holding them back from mingling with the locals. My advice: when it comes to languages, think small, not big! You might not be able to discuss the ins and outs of world politics in Spanish, but you can say, “gracias” and “por favor”, “sí” and “no”, “hola” and “buenos días” (or even throw in a Mallorquín “bon día” which will be greatly appreciated). Before going to the market, translate the words on your shopping list and use them when you get there (you can read them off the paper if you wish). In a restaurant, let the waiter bring both the English and Spanish menus to see what’s what and then order in Spanish. Use every possible opportunity to chat people up using hands and feet and big smiles and the dozen words you know. This is how children learn. This is how you learnt English. And quite successfully, too! For seeing all the options available, make sure to check out our online library to read more about learning Spanish on the island. USE LOCAL SERVICE PROVIDERS You want to be part of the community? Choose a local hairdresser, bakery, shoe repair shop, garage! It’s in the local shops and waiting rooms of healthcare providers you meet the “authentic” Mallorquins. Practice your Spanish with them. Believe me, they are the most patient of teachers. And over time they’ll come to know you and call you their neighbour. For a treat, pamper yourself with a spa day. Our Affordable Spas article online has a list of great places for a special treat. 16 | CELEBRITY
Observe the dresscode
OBSERVE THE DRESS CODE The first time my family and I were invited to a Mallorquín home for lunch we didn’t know. It was August and hot as hell, so we appeared in flipflops and wore the same type of shorts and t-shirts we would have donned to run down to the beach. Our hosts received us in their Sunday best, and an honour guard of freshly showered, crisply dressed and neatly combed children (all five of them grown up and home from work to do us justice) lined the hallway... You might think this was thirty years ago and times have changed? Next time you go to Palma or a party or event with locals, look and see for yourself. You don’t have to overdress. Neither is it about excessive makeup or displaying your expensive watch. It’s more about the neatness of the look; about the cleanliness and fragrance you exude. And, por favor, don’t walk around in town half naked. Would you choose a bikini or a pair of swimming trunks as your normal streetwear back in Liverpool or Leeds or Heidelberg? Frank answers, please! Just look at the King and his family. STAY IN THE SHADE Ever heard the word “cangrejo”? It’s Spanish for a crab – and a tourist turned red by the sun. We all know about the long-term dangers of sunburn. With the right kind of protection, you might get away with a little frying on the beach on a short visit. However, if you have come to stay you are in for 300 days of sunshine and might morph into a dried plum if you don’t stay in the shade. To all women out there: for cool air,
get yourself an “abaníco” (a fan) and learn how to use it with elegance and style! CHANGE YOUR TIMETABLE Lunch at 2.30 p.m.? Dinner at 10 p.m.? Not easy to bend your mind (and stomach) around, but if you want to meet locals at a restaurant and not find yourself in an exclusive club of tourists (and expats), try the Spanish schedule: In summer, get up early to enjoy the morning cool, dedicate yourself to whatever work you have to do before 1 p.m., then withdraw from the world for a light lunch and your siesta. Pick up the threads of what you were doing around 4.30 p.m. until, at around 8 p.m., you call it a day. Time for a cool drink with colleagues and/ or friends. Sit back and relax and enjoy the leisurely pace. Depending on what you’re doing, start preparing dinner around 9.00 to 9.30 to have it on the table by 10 p.m. Enjoy your meal in the cool of the evening. Have plenty of cold water to go with it. And if, by any chance, there was an event later that night? By all means, go and enjoy yourself! You have caught up on sleep with your siesta, after all. FALL IN LOVE! Fall in love with a local? That would of course be the best way to get in. If that doesn’t happen let yourself fall in love with the island and its people! You will never want to leave. We all dream of lazing on a hammock next to the sea underneath two palm trees. We might not be able to recreate the sea and palms, but we can sort the hammock. LE BEANOCK is a fab and groovy mix of the classic beanbag and the hammock. It’s a serendipity creation of designer Tracie Herrtage. From fashion model to expert sail maker to qualified welder, Tracie’s career in design has embraced style, fun and functionality. A lifelong interest in interior design and furniture has given birth to many innovative ideas culminating in her unique achievements. LE BEANOCK In 2005 LE BEANOCK was one of the stylish stars of the BBC business show pilot series, Dragons’ Den. The programme offers entrepreneurs like Tracie Herrtage the chance to bid for investment cash. After a gruelling audition, Tracie was picked from thousands of company heads to pitch her idea to five of the UK’s most successful entrepreneurs including Rachel Elnaugh of Red Letter Days, Peter Jones and Simon Woodroffe, founder of the Yo! Sushi restaurants, when no one knew who the Dragons were and how the programme worked. Tracie was backed by Rachel Elnaugh of Red Letter Days. In Tracie’s own words, “The beauty of LE BEANOCK is its simplicity. It’s a real WOW FACTOR piece of kit. It’s cool and extremely comfortable. • • • •
LE BEANOCK is ideal for all the family and is of particular comfort for those with SPECIAL NEEDS. LE BEANOCK is almost womb-like as it is soft, secure and safe and has no hard edges. LE BEANOCK is wonderful for well-being and stress relief, the worries of the world melt away as you are cradled in its ease and comfort. LE BEANOCK is an experience like no other.”

THE POUT IS OUT On Tuesday of this week, my favourite shoe designer – Alice X - launched the Coco sandal, a new design featuring classic monochrome shades in super soft buffalo leather. The Denim Fuji style, inspired by traditional Japanese Boro patchwork, takes denim to a new level - with five indigo shades in one shoe. They’re easy to wear and super cool. Gorgeous with jeans, shorts or a floaty sundress, they are the perfect laid-back style to wear all holiday long (wherever/whenever that holiday might finally be…) Alice X’s unique shoes are fantastic for any winter break or summer holiday. Available in nine striking designs, including hero trend, metallics, as well as bold blocking and super-soft pastels. Only available in limited numbers, the collection is the espadrille for 2020. Plus, to help support the UK’s NHS staff at this difficult time, the team at Alice X will be donating £10 from each sale to their NHS Hero fund. They are inviting all customers to nominate an NHS person, hospital or ward, and Alice X will use money from the fund to give them something special to help brighten their day. They’ll then feature each hero on their insta page. #NHSheros. www.alicexglobal.com
H&M NEW CONSCIOUS COLLECTION Yes, I know most fashion shops are closed, but online shopping is still very much open for business. Even during this challenging time, it’s still worth looking for ways to make our wardrobes a little bit more planet-friendly. Whether it’s shopping from sustainable brands or hiring clothing items rather than buying them. Perhaps now more than ever, we need to take steps to take care of our planet, and our relationship with “fast fashion” is finally changing. Sustainable fashion is now more accessible than ever, with high street brands such as H&M doing their bit to offer environmentally-friendly pieces. The brand launched their Conscious Collection in 2012, and are currently using the line as a sustainable stepping stone on the way to achieving their goal of using only recycled or sustainably sourced materials in just ten years’ time, by 2030. If you’re a fan of the Conscious Collection, the good news is the last drop was 26 March, and it’s simply stunning. The collection is inspired by Le Train Bleu, the elegant sleeper train that went from Calais to the French Rivera (Côte d’Azur) in the 1920s. Pieces are decked out in Rivera-inspired stripes, and boast gorgeously over-the-top silhouettes, and taffeta, taffeta, taffeta. If there was ever a time to shop for aspirational (yet affordable) pieces, to have fun with once our current health crisis is over, it’s now. But while the collection which boasts elegant pieces for the evening, as well as daytime classy summer-wear, is undoubtedly beautiful to look at, it also has an impressive story behind it. The length the Conscious designers have gone to in seeking recycled, sustainable materials is a highlight in itself. First up, many of the new pieces have been made with leftover materials from previous collections, meaning nothing has gone to waste. These include recycled glass for accessories, recycled polyester-taffeta, and organic silk. Leather-look pieces are made from a genius fabric named Vegea, created using discarded grape skins, stalks and seeds from the winemaking process. There’s also the collection’s first denim piece, which H&M ensured was as eco-friendly as possible by using 100% undyed organic cotton that’s recyclable. Which means less water used in the fabric as well as fewer chemicals to dye the jeans. While the clothing is all excellent, the accessories are perhaps what standout most in this range. From intricate seashell-inspired hair accessories to strappy mules, these will see you through 2020 and beyond.

Jess Conrad and Cliff Richard A Lifetime of Friendship “I first met Cliff when he was cast in his very first film ‘Serious Charge’ (1959) and we became very good friends then which has lasted until the very present day. This would be my last appearance as a film extra. I became a student of the Actors Workshop, went into rep and became an actor and, by chance, a pop star myself with some success. By Jess Conran
“As one heartthrob to another, how do you keep your youthful good looks?” We were part of a gang of teddy boys. He played the part of Curly, for no apparent reason, and always jokingly complained that he had to be there an hour before the rest of us to have his hair permed. Here we are in a scene confronting the good guy, actor Anthony Quayle, who played the local vicar. Also in the scene is Philip Lowry who went on to play Dennis Tanner in Coronation Street. Around that time, we were pictured at the birthplace of rock’n’roll, the Two I’s Coffee Bar on Old Compton Street in Soho. Here’s an iconic picture of Cliff, Billy Fury and myself in concert at Wembley Pool

back in the 1960s. We met at numerous celebrity functions over the years and this is a particularly interesting one as Cliff is sporting a beard owing to his role at the time as Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. Another time, I was invited to go to Elstree Studios to celebrate Cliff ’s Summer Holiday films. And here we are pictured on the famous bus with Tim Rice. I was asked to participate in ‘An Audience with Cliff Richard’ for ITV where I asked him, “As one heartthrob to another, how do you keep your youthful good looks?” which put a smile on Cliff ’s face and caused great laughter in the audience.
Most recently, I was invited to be with him by The Variety Club of Great Britain to celebrate his 60th Anniversary in Showbiz at the Marriott Grosvenor Square on 11th July 2019. He always invited me to his shows, but unfortunately I was either on tour with Jesus in Godspell or Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. But my wife always went with my two daughters Natalie & Sasha. My wife was the former model Renee Bergman famous for being Miss Camay in the bath. ‘You look a little lovelier each day with beautiful pink Camay’.

Spotted in Celebrity Magazine! Eagle-eyed Celebrity reader thinks he spots a familiar face from the past. Was he correct? By Matthew Cull
Keith with George Best
Time to relax
In a previous edition of CELEBRITY magazine we featured an article on Rafa Nadal and his career successes. The article featured several photographs including one of Rafa and Keith Sneddon, a frequent visitor to his apartment in southwest Mallorca. Paul, a Celebrity reader from Santa Ponsa contacted the magazine and said he remembers a guy called Keith Sneddon playing football in the Luton area in his youth - could it be the same person? I do know Keith, but not a huge amount about him other than his publishing business background. I contacted Keith who was marooned on Mallorca because of lockdown and Covid-19 and lo and behold ‘Santa Ponsa Paul’s’ intuition was right. Keith did in fact have a sporting background and in his time playing soccer he even played with the great George Best. ”I first met George when at the twilight of his career he signed for Dunstable Town in the the Southern League we then played together again in the United Arab Emirates. I always found George good company and this was before his alcohol problems started so I would always prefer to remember George for the great player he was and it was a privilege to play alongside him.” “My time on the football field was limited as because of the business I was involved in away matches were a problem but the manager and players understood and I played when I could“, Keith said. 22 | CELEBRITY
When international travel became an integral part of my professional life soccer was out of the question, and of course, I was getting older. Keith’s travels took him to Japan, developing markets in Tokyo and Osaka, Moscow, Istanbul, Iran and Iraq, throughout Europe and the Middle East. Keith became so busy he decided to open an office in Dubai which was an ideal halfway house between Europe and Asia he then located himself in Dubai whilst his wife Sue ran their affairs in the UK along with bringing up their two daughters Simone and Sally. “The Dubai decision was a great success and amongst other things I worked closely with the ruling Al Maktoum family and HH The Amir of Bahrain. Being in the region meant I could respond quickly to any situation and I know that was appreciated by the rulers, particularly during the first Gulf War. At the time of the hostilities there was much negative press about the region, and as a publisher I was able to relay more positive images as business continued. Keith often introduced humour. Once speaking at a conference he was asked what was the most profitable type of publishing in the Middle East? Keith replied “Ransom Notes” as at the time Terry Waite, John McCarthy and Brian Keenan were being held hostage in Beirut. Keith and Sue celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary this year and have four
grandchildren, Lucy, Tom, Harry and Martha so I’m sure there are interesting discussions around the dinner table when they all get together. In his thirties Keith was introduced to the game of squash and this he was able to enjoy (...if that’s the right word!) and achieved a competitive level which kept his mind and body sharp. He used to compare squash to 100 mph chess. The game seemed to suit his competitive nature as it was one against one . On the football field Keith would often berate his teammates if a pass went astray or wasn’t delivered in time. A hard task master. It was once pointed out to him “there is no I in ‘team’“ he replied “yes but there is an ‘I’ in ‘win’”. I suppose it was a natural progression from squash to tennis which Keith didn’t take up until he was in his fourth decade .”I think I was about 42 when I started playing tennis, quite late I suppose but spending more time here in Mallorca gave me plenty of opportunities to play in the sunshine along with playing league tennis at David Lloyd’s club in the UK. So although he no longer plays any competitive sports, Keith still enjoys morning runs to help keep him in shape. It was a pleasure to chat to Keith and learn a bit more about him, and with such an interesting background and I’m sure Celebrity Magazine will catch up and be chatting to Keith again in the future.

Cala Nova Cancer Charity Shop We all like to do as much as we can for charity, and here in Mallorca we are lucky to have plenty of philanthropic individuals that donate their time and money to worthy causes, both at home and abroad.
By Ben Mulvey
One of these individuals is Angela McGrath who runs the Cala Nova Cancer Charity Shop in San Agustin. The shop has been running for eight years thanks to the hard work and dedication of Angela and her glamorous team of volunteers that keep the shop open every day. “We are so happy to give back to the community and our efforts are matched by the generosity of people from around the island”, Angela tells me. “It is a beautiful, happy shop even though it is open for people that are suffering”. The shop was started after Angela sadly lost two friends to cancer and decided that she wanted to do something to help. Since opening it has gone from strength to strength having donated almost €350,000 to charities around the island. The shop supports AECC, ASPANOB, The Cancer Support Group and DIME and, after expenses, 100% of the money the shop makes goes straight to these charities. I feel it is important to also highlight that nobody profits from the shop

- all management and staff work on a completely voluntary basis. To support the shop they could always do with an extra pair of hands as there is plenty to sort out, clean and sell in the shop itself, especially after the Coronavirus lockdown. As a result of the lockdown, the shop could also benefit from more donations as the overheads were still paid during this time. Donations such as bric-à-brac, toys furniture and clothes in good condition are
welcome any time and all protocols are being followed to ensure that everything is cleaned properly and masks are worn at all times in the shop. It is definitely worth a visit to this Aladdin’s cave in San Agustin - it was my first port of call when I moved into my new apartment, and it is for such a worthy cause. To donate items, please pass by the shop on Avenida Joan Miro, 354 in San Agustin between 10 am - 2 pm from Monday to Saturday. To make a cash donation or to volunteer your time, give Angela a call on +34 609 848 622 or call the shop on +34 971 708 664.

SOLLER VALLEY STORIES
by Soller Shirley Shirley Roberts
Photos by Gary Lloyd-Rees
This year is a unique entity throughout the whole world. The life of a pandemic in the Soller Valley will be the subject of folklore and literature for years to come. To analyse where we are in July and August of 2020 is to say we are all bouncing back to life. The Soller Valley is a very resilient place as history will tell you. This period has given time for reflection and innovation as tourism returns within the rules in place to protect us all. The Port of Soller has a traditional horse shoe shaped bay and a perfect harbour. Fine yachts join the fishing boats and the Tramontana Marina is the centre of our pop-up world. Live music and food trucks happen every night and the open air aspect of a party place is now well established. Social distancing is not an issue as this is all outdoors. The only problem is the occasional rainy night which, fortunately doesn’t happen often in the summer. The sea quality and the beach is stunning

this year. The families enjoying their picnic nights are now being joined by visitors from other countries. We are just so delighted to welcome them back. The Soller Valley has the finest restaurants and they have returned with inventive additions to their menu plus all the old favourites. The Soller prawn figures heavily on the menus but you can also go buy them yourself from the harbour shop. The renovations of the Port have given us the lowest carbon footprint for prawns and the fish of the Mediterranean. When the boats come in you can just queue at the shop to buy the freshest catch. So many of our visitors, including Celebrity chefs, from all over the world are first in line. An exciting aspect of the Soller Valley in the summer of 2020 is spontaneity. Many of the traditional fiestas are on hold but Sollerics are constantly bringing on events and live music happenings. In July a ‘no animals circus’ comes to town with trapeze and high wire acts and an open air arena. This
is preparing the way for an ‘anything goes’ summer. Visit this year and you might walk into a swing band or a local orchestra giving their best in the town square. The first ‘Drive In’ movie of Grease will be a Port of Soller delight. We are already practising for that one. Films on the beach and animations on street corners will make this corner of Mallorca an absolute summer delight. The Soller train and tram are running their normal schedules and many choose to visit us this way. The journey from the station to the Port on the tram is the stuff memories are made of. To trundle along the route, in the middle of back gardens, is a treat not afforded to many. In their 100-year history they have seen many changes to our valley and they will not be phased by what this year has thrown at them. The Soller Valley welcomes you to its beauty, hospitality and friendship. Come and see for yourself – you are very welcome.

Starsigns for the Summertime This summer there is no time to get bored. Whether you are already on holiday or still working, the full moon in Capricorn on the 4th of July is going to hand you the main theme for the rest of the summer. We are in the midst of the most profound time of transformation on both a personal and a global level. There have already been two eclipses in June, and another lunar eclipse happened with the full moon on the 4th July, so you might find that you are feeling a lot of frustration and experiencing setbacks. This is normal as a lunar eclipse shines a light on the areas of your life where you need to make changes. Being in the zodiac sign of Capricorn, July’s full moon relates to society and our respective place within it. We will see societal structures slowly breaking down in order to create the space for a new start globally. As for each of us individually, going within and focusing on stabilising our internal structure, is the only way to adapt. We must expect the unexpected and open up to new opportunities without fear. Everyone should find their own creative source and pay close attention to it. This could include activities like gardening, baking, painting, writing, music, dancing etc. Think about all the things you’ve wanted to do but haven’t gotten around to yet and dedicate time to them. Meanwhile there is also a Saturn/Pluto conjunction, prompting big change. Pluto exerts an influence over the collective, whereas Saturn is your own personal teacher, shining light on the lessons you must learn. They are both in Capricorn which means that their influence is relating to societal structures, politics, institutions, educational systems etc, and as they move together they create a wake up call that might feel a little bit like a wave is crashing down on your life. The best advice is simply to ride the wave and work with it. A last astrological event worth mentioning is the full moon in Aquarius on the third 28 | CELEBRITY

FINDING FAIRWAYS Mallorca Golf Course Reviews with Matthew Cull
T Golf & Country Club T Golf & Country Club, with its inspired layout from known golf course designer John Harris, was first opened 1978 with many calling the stunning course his masterpiece. I first visited T-Golf back in 2017 when I took my son for some golf lessons. I immediately felt a warm welcome and an air of efficiency. At that time there were course renovations taking place following the acquisition of the club by German entrepreneur, Heiner Tamsen. This is where the ‘T’ comes from in T-Golf. He had ambitious upgrades planned and I was interested to see how they developed. Easily found, the course is located just 2km from Magaluf. On arrival you can see for yourself the results of the two years of works that took place between 2016 and 2018. The course is stunning from all angles. I played the course just days after Phase 2 of the lockdown de-escalation had begun, and the course was immaculate. Naturally the fairways and greens have benefitted from the lack of footfall during the lockdown and the groundstaff had clearly been busy preparing the magnificent T-Golf course for the resumption of play being allowed. With a typical greenfee costing €160 euros, one of, if not the dearest round of golf in Mallorca I was keen to see if the 18 holes represented value for money. A good friend of mine, local yacht skipper, Blurge Brown who previously had a membership at T-Golf kindly joined me for today’s round. We warmed up by hitting a few shots on the impressive range facility. Throughout the round, Blurge talked me through the changes that had been made to the layout and the addition of the plentiful water features, one of which my ball got know about a bit too closely. However, I

didn’t mind too much, just like my playing partner, we were both a little rusty and far from playing our best, I felt pleased to have only found one of the 15 water hazards. Blurge was keen for me to point out that he avoided all of them. The journey around the first half of the course is fairly flat, the bigger inclines come in the latter section of the course, which also give you very best views towards the UNESCO – listed Serra de Tramuntana mountains. With a course yardage of just over 7000 yards T-golf represents a great challenge. Although some of the holes appear quite easy from the tee you soon realise that the pure length of the hole is its challenge, you’re not hitting a wedge into many par 4 greens, you’re using long irons of hybrid metal woods most likely into pins that in some cases are tucked away. The four par-3’s are all reasonably lengthy but are a good opportunity for a birdie, as are the par-5’s. We were given a buggy for our round today and you’re encouraged to stick to the cart paths where possible to avoid damaging the fairways. I was blown away with the cart itself, certainly the most equipped I have ever driven. Kitted out with the usual drinks holders and storage for your round, the buggies here at T-golf also come with live screens with digital scorecards. About the same size an iPad and mounted where you’d find your rear-view mirror in your car, the screen also shows a layout to the hole your about play with yardage or metres to any significant obstacle or feature. If this wasn’t impressive enough as you bring the buggy
parallel to your ball on the fairway the screen then shows your yardage to the centre of the green. On completion of the 7th holes the screen automatically brought up a snacks and drinks menu with prices, you tap a call button on screen and places a call through to clubhouse to place your order which is ready for collection after you’ve played the 9th hole. I think this should be standard now on all golf buggies! I thoroughly enjoyed the day, it was nice to exchange lockdown stories with Blurge, tales we will share many times again with others in the future I’m certain. The course is simply stunning as you can see from the photos. As for whether it’s worth the lofty pricetag, what I will say is the course, the clubhouse facilities and service are exemplary. It’s a premium golfing experience from start to finish with a price to unashamedly match.

PET’S CORNER
Leishmaniosis Canina The causal agent or “bug” which causes the disease is a protozoa, a type of single-cell, mobile organism.
Leishmaniosis Canina, the name I’ve learnt here, or canine Leishmaniasis in English, is the plague of Mallorca. I knew it well after working here for only a few weeks because unfortunately, it is so common. This disease does not yet exist in the UK, but cases are appearing in England in animals which have been abroad. It affects dogs over a huge area of Mediterranean Europe, (Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Malta, Greece, Turkey, Israel, Egypt, Libia, Morocco, etc), the Middle East and many tropical and subtropical areas of the world. The disease is spread via the bite of a mosquito, not the normal mosquito, but a very specific, small mosquito called a sandfly, or to use its proper name, Phlebotomus. The sandfly cannot survive in the cold UK, but having said this, the average temperature only needs to rise by 1°C, and we will have sandflies and probably Leishmaniosis in the south of England.
What are the common symptoms? The most common signs are weight loss and poor condition; dandruff or a little sore that don’t heal. Here in Mallorca, I have learnt that anything strange, whatever it may be, we should do a test for Leishmania! It’s almost impossible to avoid contact with these little mosquitos, as they are everywhere. What should I do if I think my dog has Leishmaniosis? Obviously, you should take him to your vet as soon as possible. We can do a rapid blood test. What does the treatment involve? There is no 100% cure but most dogs respond very well to the treatments and can live a happy, healthy life. Where do the sandflies come from? They live in the vegetation of the island, i.e. all over (but not on the beaches!) They only live from spring through to autumn and they are more active at dawn and at dusk - just when it is cooler and we want to walk our dogs!
How can I protect my dog? Knowing the above, we can try and avoid walking our dogs in the evening and early morning. Allowing them to sleep inside overnight will reduce the chances of them getting bitten. To protect them further inside we recommend plug-in anti-mosquito devices. Also very importantly, there are collars which have been shown to be very useful at repelling the flies and thus reducing the rate of infections. There are also several preparations which help protect, but unfortunately, nothing is 100% effective. Recently there have been vaccines available, which protect from within the body, by stimulating white blood cells. However, they work in a different way from the traditional vaccines and, again, are not 100% effective. We recommend the collars and pipettes to protect from bites and the vaccine to protect if they are unfortunate enough to get bitten. If you have any questions regarding any of the above please do not hesitate to speak with Nick and the team at Clinica Veterinaria Bendinat. BOATS, BIKES & AUTOMOBILES by Hamish Goddard
IT’S GOOD TO BE BACK! Mallorca feels vaguely normal again, accepting that many hospitality outlets and pretty much all hotels remain shut, with the Balearic Islands relatively free of tourists until early July. I was never very good with rules as a youngster and have found little personal development in this respect over the years, brought into sharp focus in the current climate when there seems to be at least one crazy new amendment with each passing day about what one can and cannot do and greatly confusing the audience in the process. It was always the rules which made little sense that I was never much cop at obeying - and the anomalies remain with the virus measures, in that you now can go unmasked into a restaurant with a group of strangers, whilst the poor waitering staff still look like they’re recovering from a chin-lift - worn as masks increasingly are, away from the face allowing the wearer to breathe in the way that evolution intended. I was particularly bemused - or perhaps even amused - by yesterday’s announcement from Holland that premier league football is opening to spectators again, with the caveat that those football-starved spectators are not allowed to chant or sing. God forbid someone should score a goal... Imagine the carnage... Anyway, enough of all that as I’m pretty sure we’re heartily bored of it. A side effect of our islands’ journey through the crisis is that since the end of May, when we could begin to do things again that had a certain feeling of normality, we’ve had an island free of tourists - like a quiet January with June weather. If your income doesn’t depend on tourism (aware that there are a huge number of people for whom it does - and who have my absolute sympathy), it’s actually been 40 | CELEBRITY
quite pleasant from a socially less crowded perspective, whilst also allowing the island to breathe a little. Sounding even more selfish, it has given us a couple of months where some of the best driving and riding roads in the world have been free of the 80,000 or so hire cars that would otherwise be chuntering around and given us an additional kind of freedom. One of our first de-mob excursions was to take five fast motorbikes on a convoluted but beautiful route to the El Sol cafe - one of the coolest beach side restaurants on the island - in the otherwise one-horse town of Son Serra de Marina. The freedom was tangible after being under house arrest for over two months - and this was just one of the infinite choices we have on this island to celebrate the new abnormal. Innumerable events have been lost this year - Euro 2020, The Olympics, Wimbledon, the first half of the F1 season etc. Unlikely to make it on to this list in terms of global recognition, but no less important to the charities it supports, was the Senses 6Points
Mallorca Challenge in May - a 400km three-day lap of the island - now scheduled to take place at the beginning of October. We do hope that the 1996 Formula One World Champion Damon Hill will still be able to come along, booked as he was for the postponed event in the spring. In order to allow some sort of fund raising for the event’s chosen charities (Asdica and Save the Med) in the interim, we are organizing monthly rides of 60km or so to somewhere nice for lunch - June’s installment being the summit finish last weekend at the fabulous Galilea Trattoria above Calvia. Please join us for one these rides on the last Saturday of each month - and join Damon hopefully for the main event in October, his SKY TV commitments allowing. CLASSIC AND SUPERCARS AT NOVA DEL MAR After the marina’s redevelopment over the last few years, the newly launched Nova Del Mar restaurant above Port Olympic Calanova has become a fantastic new addition to the dining and drinking options along the vibrant and fun stretch of coastline around Cala Major. Superbly located and with ample parking, it has also become the current base for the Wednesday evening classic and supercar gatherings whilst their spiritual home, The Boathouse in Palma, remains closed due to the virus outbreak. Again, after locking down for a few months and with the island relatively free of people,
there is a renewed energy to the Wednesday gatherings and spirited weekend drives around the island. With finger food laid on and prices that are infinitely less eye-watering than anything you might need for your boat from the marina office downstairs, a Wednesday evening at Nova Del Mar is definitely one for the petrolheads. BOATS, BIKES & AUTOMOBILES WE DON’T NEED A BIGGER BOAT.. Finally, I was invited sports fishing this week up at Alcúdia with local sports fisherman Captain Vince Riera - whose name sounded more suited to a piratical love-interest in a period rom-com caper. Sports fishing is something I’ve always been keen to try, having never caught much more than inedible Ciguatera-laced barracuda from a trawled line off the back of a yacht.
With an early start and a blast out beyond Cap Formentor where the island shelves steeply from around 100m into an abyss of several hundred, I’m happy to say that the ‘one that got away’ (Blue Fin tuna of over 200kg are caught in this area) was compensated by a 10kg Albacor (white tuna) - and in spite of more elaborate hooks and lures than I’ve ever come across in my admittedly short sports fishing career, that was it for the day - as can happen sometimes. What I would say is that if it’s there to be caught, Captain Vince has the boat, the kit,
the knowledge and the enthusiasm to catch it! A fantastic day was enhanced further by more dolphins than I’ve ever whooped at in my five years of sailing around the island no doubt also enjoying an aquatic version of a tourist-free empty road. For more information: www.fishing-mallorca.net Conscious that much of the world is behind us in the coronavirus cycle and that significant issues remain for several countries, it’s good that many of us here seem to at last be back in business - and that the summer season may not after all be the capriccio version that we had feared back in March. Out you go and enjoy it!

Property Market Update
According to reports in the Sunday Times, the Balearic Island’s ability to close borders and limit Covid cases is proving to be a big draw for wealthy buyers, particularly with the potential threat of other future pandemics in mind. This was also reiterated by Germany with a comment by the Chairman of the German Travel Association Norbert Fiebig who agreed that Mallorca and the Balearics is a safe destination which had done its homework well. Just as well since 10.000 German tourists arrived mid June as the state of alarm was lifted with a trial run to gauge the systems in place and I presume to assess any possible upsurge in new cases as a result. Thankfully I can report all is looking good on that front, much to the relief of everyone. It was also a great relief to the Brits that Boris decided to drop the UK’s two week quarantine requirements upon re-entry – with a green light being shown by the British government to 10 European countries including Spain from July 4th. This signaled a huge leap in internet activity with phones ringing “off the hook” with property enquiries for both rentals and sales flooding in. This was a good sign for our islands – giving hope to many, particularly those out of work and on Spanish government’s ERTE furlough 44 | CELEBRITY
scheme, waiting to know if and when the main tourist facilities will open. For me personally this lockdown has been quite tough, having lost one client who was close to signing an Option Contract for an exclusive property listing in Old Bendinat for €7.7m (the original price was registered at €9 million) the week lockdown started. There was of course very little activity over the last few months, particularly from the British market. I did however receive some new interest two weeks ago through an agent colleague, with a German client wanting to make an offer who had seen it before Christmas. I was wondering why I hadn’t heard, and was then informed a few days ago that they would be withdrawing their interest due to “difficult business issues”. It turns out they were the owners of the German meat processing factory in Gütersloh which caused the whole region to go back into lockdown after 1500 tested positive! I’m keeping my fingers crossed it will be a case of third time lucky. The Mallorca property market has weathered numerous global slumps over the last few decades, with prices baring up well compared to the rest of Europe and the world as a whole. With Mallorca having raised its profile over the last decade, with strong initiatives to attract quality tourism to the island, strict building regulations
and limited land to build, as well as embracing climate change legislation to reinforce the Balearic brand as a sustainable destination Mallorca continues to offer property investors stability for the future. This has been reinforced in demonstrating its ability to act quickly, to come together as a community and to adapt to difficult circumstances, even in times of unprecedented global uncertainty. If you are reading this and are one of the wealthy buyers looking to change their priorities in life, I have included a few pictures of the above mentioned Old Bendinat property. Old Bendinat truly is one of the best locations on the island, and this property is an elegant classical design with seven bedrooms, a nice flat plot, beautiful sea views and walking distance to the beach and even the shops if you so desired. So until next issue be safe, take precautions, but it’s time to get on with our lives and enjoy every precious moment!
