FORD KA SEDAN x FIAT MOBI X CHERY QQ Tested by José Carlor Finardi e Antônio Bernardo
The 100% Motor magazine tested three utility vehicles. The Fiat Mobi, Ford Ka Sedan and Chery QQ. The test calculated their acceleration performance from 0 to 100 Km/h. All cars are similar in many factors. They have the same number of cylinders, CCs, five gears and are flex. Also the fuel in every single one of them was ethanol the tires were the PIRELLI 175/65R14. However, in the try-outs conclusion the test pilot José Carlos Finardi and the timekeeper Antônio Bernardo found some singularities in each car. According to Finardi the most powerful one was the Fiat Mobi, in second place came the Ford ka Sedan and for last the Chery QQ. In the boards beside is possible to see the results and specifications of each vehicle. Smaller the time more efficient they are. 6

CHERY QQ The cheapest car in Brazil Text: Rafael Pires/José Carlos Finardi Photos: Alexandre Akashi/Chery's press release
The title of cheapest car in Brazil goes to Chery QQ. Its internal space is good for a compact vehicle and it’s also very light, but lacks quality in dirigibility. QQ’s engine has three cylinders, each one with four valves. In medium rotation the torque functions well because its flywheel apparently has a heavy weight which helps the gear resumption. In low rotation the control frame torque’s gain is correct. This gives the car agility and a good harmony in its exchange ratio. However, the motor ceased when the pilot started driving. José Carlos Finardi was performing the test and said: “Possibly
8
what happened was a calibration deficiency. That caused the throttle body injection to open up too much and there was no progression in the take-off”. Another problem provoked by this single irregularity occurred during the car slowdowns. According to Finardi the throttle’s delay was hold back for too long and the rotation was kept high: “This lag is an option to reduce the emission of pollutants, but it harmed the dirigibility. It made a loud noise that could raise suspicions of some sort of defect”. In the 100% Motor Magazine’s test the

five thousand kilometers car fueled with ethanol exhibited several issues. The cushions of the power train assembly, that is, the protection against engine and gear vibration, are too soft and cause excessive movement. The brakes weren’t stable. In emergency braking they unbalanced the car. After slightly pulling the hand brakes the pedal height was compensated, this means there was probably a deficiency in the rear brake lining. The board computer is European standard. Which means its consumption information appears in
the screen inversed to the brazilian one. With that said, the driver might get wrong interpretations of the data. Besides, the “cut off” function apparently doesn’t answer fast enough, possibly the software lacks calibration. Also, the fuel level measurement had some flaws. Its sensor was imprecise and inconstant. It would say two quarters at some time and suddenly jumped to three quarters. Whenever the QQ was in low speed its shock absorbers didn’t seemed functional, their harmony with the suspension wasn’t good and the vehicle
would get instable. It appeared to make a strong crackling in the frontal suspension, but during a visual inspection Finardi noticed that there was attrition between the inferior part of the bumper and the tip of the bodywork. The car presented problems to start in cold
weather, also in the transmission. Although, after warming up, the gear exchange became much softer. Its fuel consumption was not exceptionally economic, but it was acceptable even with a small capacity tank. It might be small in the outside, but inside the QQ is quite spacious. The back sits
are comfortable and have good space even when the frontal ones are reclined all the way back. However, these last ones are not anatomic and are kind of narrow, the driver won’t get too comfortable. The ceiling is tall and the car’s visual is pleasant. The panel though, is sort of cheap,
there’s no glove compartment. Probably this might be an option for cost reduction, but the truth is that one of those would fit quite well and documents or other objects wouldn’t be exposed in the interior of this compact kind of vehicle. Beyond that, it would give to car a better sense of accommodation.
ENGINE
In the engine, back in the old days, the combustion mixture was made by a carburetor. However, it has been obsolete for quite some time. It´s ineďŹƒcient and constantly consumes fuel because it works with a negative pressure system. Many pneumatic capsules were developed to compensate the carburetor deficiencies. One of them was the Solenoid. It was applied to fix the
12
suction's delay, but fuel would still leak through the progression holes. This caused a huge emissions of carbon monoxide and also a lot of waste. An alternative was the electronic injection.
ELECTRONIC INJECTION
AIR AND FUEL MIXTURE Origin, evolution and operation of fuel alimentation in the engine Text: Rafael Pires/José Carlos Finardi Photos: José Carlos Finardi
Volkswagen was the first automaker to apply this sort of combustion mixture in Brazil. In 1989 they released cars with the BOSCH LE-Jetronic, nicknamed by the mechanics “Dumb Injection”. According to the instructor of automobilist mechanics José Augusto Stuani, this process won this named for various reasons as he said: “BOSCH was an electronic multipoint injection. When it was cold
the injection was simultaneous, it happened in all cylinders at the same time. After warming up it would become semi-sequential. However, too much fuel was accumulated in the admission valve. Furthermore, it only had three kinds of diagnostics and they were deduced by a light blinking panel. It was also analog and very slow”. José Carlos Finardi followed closely the Bosch’s production as a test pilot in the brazilian product’s assembler, Volkswagen. He said: “The system was robust and very hard to operate. It didn’t had many resourses. Also there was no scanners capable of reading its data. So, in order to get diagnostics the mechanic would need another interface called “BOB”. Here, the whip would interweave with the module and the reading could be done by a multimeter. Equipment used to measure electric current. Nevertheless, this “dumb injection” was effective measuring air. It could calculate the admitted dosage and add the proper amount of fuel. Another of its qualities was the resistance of the nozzle. Finardi commented: “There are still vehicles with more the 500 thousand kilometers that are still using their original nozzles. The ones made now don’t last more than 70 thousand kilometers”. To reduce cost of production, posteriorly the electronic monopoint injection was developed, an enormous kickback. It was ineffective and full of issues, like high consumption of gasoline and ethanol. In this system only one nozzle was in charge of feeding the cylinders. The result was a lot of fuel accumulated in the collector and pollution levels were similar to the carburetor's.
NOZZLE
The electronic multipoint injection is more efficient and there are a few different types. Two of them are the semi-sequential and the sequential. In this process, fuel is injected near the admission valve. This makes the whole thing faster and increases the engine performance and economy. Stuani said the difference between this two types is in the way the fuel alimentation is done: “In the semisequential, fuel is nourished in two cylinders at a time. In the sequential, it follows the engine’s ignition order”. There are many functions that help the multipoint injection’s operation. One of them is called “cut off”. It’s a system programmed to cut fuel in the slowdowns. It was a great novelty when released, and now its indispensible. Another one is the Lambda probe. Its name comes from the greek letter that measures air volume in the mixture with fuel. It’s a sensor that obtains the stoichiometric range, which is the ideal blend of gasoline and ethanol with oxygen. The improvement was so expressive that it brought a “new era” to the electronic injections.
The most modern one is the direct electronic injection. Here, the air only receives the fuel after compressed and only in combustion phase. Unlike the others, where it happens in the admission collector. Stuani explained: “The electronic direct injection gives more control to the car over the fuel, it burns almost completely. This way, there’s more economy and less pollution”.

AUTOMOBILE SCANNER evaluation of the fuel quality Text: Rafael Pires/José Carlos Finardi Photos: Rafael Pires
In this year’s Automec fair the company Napro introduced new updates to their softwares PC SCAN 3000 and 7000. This are versions of an automobile scanner that now also comes with Bluetooth. Many car workshops use them to diagnose vehicles and obtain lots of data. Among this informations, there’s the fuel reading. In the superior right side of the program’s diagnostic screen there’s a number which indicates de relation between air and fuel. When the car being tested has ethanol in its tank the software should signal 12% or less, but if it has gasoline this number should to be bigger than 13%. Any alteration in this values means the fuel was adulterated. This makes easier to know the trustworthy gas stations. This scanner is produced in Brazil. And, besides the fuel diagnose function it also tends to the electronic injection, ABS brakes, immobilizer, air bag, automatic transmission, instruments panel and many other systems as specified in the board above. It’s also possible to check the table of applications and vehicles in Napros’s website. The software can already be accessed via Tablets and computers.

The Q3 tested had an 1.4 TFSI engine and the elasticity was good. Factor that strengthens the versatility of this car, very explored and its marketing. Finardi said that one of the vehicle’s best part is the transmission. The gear exchange was practically imperceptible during the course and accompanied by the suspension, driving it was very satisfactory. Another point that reassures its dynamic is the use of the S-Tronic. This gear allows the driver to choose between manual or automatic exchange. Consequently, the off-road and sporting drive gets more interesting and the urban easier. And yes, the Q3 has a “twist”. When the engine rotation reaches 2100 RPM, all its capacity is released and the turbo starts working. The brakes had great performance in all kinds of terrain. They include a ramp assistance that
maneuver was made over wet grass, with barely no adherence and yet the car did not slipped. According to Finardi, what help the Q3 having this performance was an electronic tool that tries keeping the vehicle balanced. It is one of the car’s many driver assist systems, such as traction control, parking sensor, lanes radar and many others. All very welcome when needed.

WATER INJECTION IN THE CYLINDERS The future of power is in the past Text: Rafael Pires/José Carlos Finardi Photo: Second world war collection/worldwarphotos.info
“It’s funny how technology advances and suddenly reaches a limit where the answer for the future is on an abandoned idea from the past”. Said José Carlos Finardi about the water injection in modern
car cylinders. Back in the second world war the german planes needed a boost after dropping bombs in the aircraft carriers. For this, a system that injected water in their cylinders was developed. Thus, the compression rate increased, the combustion chamber cooled and the fighters would get the auxiliary power to resume flight. In the year 2000 an old man, that worked with this injection system back in Germany spoke to Finardi about a project for vehicles called “gáságua”. The idea was an adaptation of this aircraft boost for cars. He said that it had already been tested in a brazilian transport company. However, a problem with one of the buses cast the project aside. Finardi explained: “The water was added to the admission collector and ran due gravity. When a bus stopped to refuel, the engine was off and it kept going down into the combustion chamber. Diesel buses don’t have negative pressure to pull the water out. So, it resulted in a hydraulic wedge that damaged the engine. Well, then the company, that was satisfied with the economy at first, decided to abandon the idea”. This mechanic solicited to Finardi an electronic management of the injected water. He had already crafted a crystal board that could warm it at one side and cool it at the other. The idea was developing an electronic system controlled by a module with a nozzle that could use the water’s positive pressure to create a cloud in the admission collector. This way all the cylinders would be supplied proportionally. The original aircraft project was left behind after the war because back then fuel was cheaper and there was no necessity for so much power in cars. Although now, with the technology’s advance this mechanic noticed that this injection could be used again. What actually happened. Huge brands like BOSCH, BMW and AUDI began now use it.

NOISE ON REAR SUSPENTION Know what to do when it happens to your car Photo: José Carlos Finardi
Some vehicles after certain time might start making noises in the rear suspension. This happens mostly because the bearing adjusted to the car and went loose. Sometimes it’s easy to thing this malfunctioning comes from the shock absorbers. However, this issue doesn’t happen to double bearing vehicles. The board beside explains what to do in case your car has such problem:
STEP BY STEP 1- Elevate the vehicle. 2- Verify the wheel's cube for looseness 3- If there is, remove the bearing’s protection cap. 4- Remove the cotter. 5- Verify the lubrication. 6- Place a good amount of grease if there’s deficiency. 7- Make the adjustment. Just tighten the nut into the wedge washer moves without a slack. 8- Tighten the nut. 9- Substitute the cotter. 10- Place a new bearing cover. 11- Do a test drive.

RENAULT KWID
The retro economy car Text: Rafael Pires/José Carlos Finardi Photos: Milton Miagusco Junior/ Renault's press release Renault’s new compact is the KWID. This vehicle was released in Brazil this year’s august and its proposal is to be a mini economic utilitarian that performs well in the off road. However, in the test made by the 100% magazine’s team the conclusion was that SUV it’s only a nickname. During the evaluation the test pilot José Carlos Finardi noticed that the powertrain’s performance
30
wasn’t satisfactory. He explained: “The engine on this car has a restricted potency. In the first and second gears I had the false impression of a good torque because the transmission ratio was short. Although, when I reached the third gear the ratio was long and it became inefficient again. The vehicle presented abnormal noises in its engine and gear adjustment, especially in the
two first ones. This is not admissible for Finardi in a low mileage car. But, this could be an exclusive problem of this unit. The shock absorbers assembly has good harmony with the springs, but in sharp curves it moved like an air mattress. Plus, the dirigibility in the tracks seemed instable. This car has a bigger elevation just like other SUVs, but in this case, it
doesn’t give much security to the driver. Its brakes showed strong trepidations. After the test, to conclude where the problem had occurred the hand brakes where slightly triggered and nothing happened. Which means the irregularity was in the discs, they were probably crocked. The answers which the vehicle’s assembler found for economy remember other decades. It
even looks “retro”. For example, the hood opens with a button very similar to the ones in old cars. Also, the cold ignition uses the old small gasoline tank, which is already obsolete in other flex lines Another option for economy that isn’t “retro” but still not justifiable are the ceiling safety lugs.

THE RETURN OD THE VEHICLES INSPECTION Vehicles fiscalization intend to diminish pollutants emission Text: Rafael Pires Photos: Napro's press release
Vehicle inspection gadgets. Gas analyer (left) and Opacimeter (right)
On the 17th august the president of São Paulo’s councilors chamber, Milton Leite, propose the return of the vehicle inspection. This action was an answer to the protests against the 20 years delay of the bus fleet renovation. According to the president, it’s not worthy to reform just one sort of vehicle. Beyond that, the major responsibles for pollutants emission are cars and trucks. From this thought, came the proposal of bring back an environmental based vehicle inspection. However, it still needs 55 votes from councilors to take effect. Milton Leite in an interview made by the newspaper “O Estado de São Paulo” said that even if not approved, he already prepares amendments that will get pollution in check. The Governor Geraldo Alckimin already approved an inspection for trucks. It will start in january 2018. Shall be subjected to inspection the vehicles with São Paulo’s license plates and also the one passing through the state. Among the problems the inspection looks to resolve, are the pollutants emission and the scrapping of the car fleet. This ones, beside polluting, cause damage to the streets.
The return of this action has been expected for a while. Was a very discussed subject during João Dória’s prefect campaign. However, when he was elected it didn’t began right away because, as he said, the city lacked resources. Moreover, since the ex-prefect Fernando Haddad stopped the inspection the responsible company, Controlar, has been in court trying to bring it back. Brazil goes through a time of crises. The brazilians don’t have money to fix their vehicles situation. Many have overdue documentations. They might lose their cars if the inspection comes back. The government migh even have good intentions due to the diminution of pollution, but the course of action could be more viable for the country’s reality. In a simulation ran by 100% magazine and the company Napro 80% of the vehicles that participated were reproved. This gives quite a good notion of what to expect when the vehicle inspection in fact returns. As the test wasn’t obligatory the owners of older cars refused to participate in fear of some sort of retaliation.
