The future’s autonomous bus


Daimler AG, which is Mercedes-Benz retainer, reveled a new urban usage bus. The vehicle is autonomous and fueled with technological resources. Its first test was made in Amsterdam. There, it ran 20 km without human intervention. However, a driver is still necessary. His

paper is monitoring the systems. The Future Bus recognizes and informs when a road is suitable for autonomous service. So, all the conductor hads to do is press a button to activate the CityPilot function. Future Bus’ maximum speed is 70 km/h. It


also stops at traffic lights and other signalizations. Mercedes-Benz assures that’s all done with great precision. Yet, if anything goes wrong, the pilot can take control by moving the wheel, stepping on the brakes or the accelerator. That’s how CityPilot gets deactivated and manual control is set on.

The bus interior is revolutionary. Its design is completely futuristic. According to Daimler AG’s board member, Dr. Wolfgang Bernhard, way more people will be able to travel inside this super vehicle. Still, comfort will be way better than conventional busses.

Tesla Motors started its activities in 2003 and already revolutionized the auto market. This company’s name is a tribute to the scientist ahead of his time, Nikola Tesla. The brand’s products have similar characteristics to his works, such as electrical current concepts and energy supply.

The SsangYong Actyon Sports pick-up calls consumer’s attention by its accessible price and reliable mechanics. This part is made by Mercedes-Benz, the Korean brand sets up bodywork and other details. The vehicle has everything to win Brazil’s market. However, some factors my work against this achievement. Such as design, with a simple online research is easy finding out that it did not pleased the public too much. Despite its robustness, it doesn’t inspire much confidence.



Moreover, the 100% Motor team’s test pilot, José Carlos Finardi commented: “Just as most imported cars, when it comes to performance and dirigibility the Brazilian taste is a bit different. For instance, the pick-up’s softness at take-offs is way too elevated. Seems like the vehicle thinks before moving. For our costume, that’s a defect. Where it comes from, it might not”. Nevertheless, such delay, according to the vehicle’s responsible was bigger than usual. So, to fix this deficiency the pick-up went through decarbonization process, air flow cleaning and engine flush. Autoplast’s Auto Cleaning Spray was applied straight into the air filter hose. Thus, it cleaned the air mass sensor. Oil had contaminated air temperature and admitted amount reading. Then, is just a question of simple reasoning, just as Finardi explained: “If the electronic injection module gets wrong information, it will do wrong things”. Oil exchange and engine flush were also made. Then, the friction reducer LL50’s was added. It increased turbine’s mobility and gave it more speed. During the test performed after the process, most deficiencies were solved. Not entirely, because that would require software recalibration for the Brazilian taste. Even so, the driver commented that seemed like this vehicle had just came out of factory.

Yet, a “Mercosul” cup is also coming up, it will include Argentina and Uruguay in the tour. This new cup began due to a F-truck pilots’ rebellion. The Airless tire or non-pneumatic doesn’t use air pressure. Instead, more flexible materials are used. In Michelin’s X Tweel SSi case, polyresin rays replaced the air. It resolved pneumatic tires jump issue. The main advantage of this kind of tires is the guarantee that it won’t go flat. Moreover, its durability is bigger, what means more economy. Yet, heavy vehicles are capable of carrying more weight and perform better at uneven terrain.

However, there are a few disadvantages, such as more rolling resistance and less suspension, when compared to pneumatic tires of similar shape and size. Another problem is heat dissipation during conduction. In other words, when used in heavier vehicles, operators might complain of fatigue. Nevertheless, such deficiencies can easily be solved. Airless tires have all technology and progress beside them. Other brands followed the same path. Bridgestone, for example, has a similar equipment called Air-Free Concept Tire. The Big Tyre Pty LTD from Australia began developing a non-pneumatic and non-solid tire, which is design to endure heavy cargo

Still, Michelin didn’t stop with the Tweel. Last year the brand presented the future's tire. They called it “Vision”. This equipment is in experimental phase and is made of biodegradable material, such as orange peel and recyclable metal. It is a single structure that units tire and wheel, this makes impact absorption more efficient without air pressure necessity. There’s also a project of placing sensors inside “Vision”. It will indicate the real state of its surface and distance travelled. A great intelligent system for fleet management. Although, it has more technology. This tire is construct by 3d printing and the driver can adapt it for every track. The forecast for “Vision” market’s arrival is 10 years.
