Saskatchewan has been transformed from a “have-not” province to a “have” province. With that transformation, homes in Saskatoon have substantially increased in value. As well, families and households have changed. For example, in 1967, less than 45% of households had two income earners. Today, more than 70% of households have two income earners. hen I think of what Centennial has become over the past 45 years there are two words that come to mind: Renovation and Innovation. Centennial has continued to evolve with the city in which it resides. Saskatoon has changed. Centennial has changed. The words renovate and innovate almost run synonymously with one another. The origins of both words mean to renew. Renovate: to restore to new condition; innovate: to introduce something new. In the root of each word is the Latin term nova meaning new. Nova has become a well-known word in the English language describing a star bursting into extreme intensity of new light. After 45 years, Centennial has reached its “nova”. It could be argued that Saskatoon has also reached its “nova” in the past few years, or at least it is approaching its “nova”. Saskatchewan has become a “have” province and has reached the world stage as a promising holder of
natural resources. As our city slogan so accurately states, Saskatoon Shines; it is reaching a new intensity of light. In the past few years the housing market has reached exponential heights. Finally, people are moving to Saskatchewan by choice, and some are returning home. At Centennial we take great pride in contributing to the rejuvenation of these homes in our city: the homes that house the invigorating and dynamic people of Saskatoon. The inaugural issue of our magazine is in tribute to the resurgence of not only Centennial, but also Saskatoon. In service to our city, we make homes new. Casa Nova. This is not to be confused with the term “Casanova” – the ladies man – or is it? Maybe the term Casanova isn’t too far off for Centennial. After all, we do hear as many “ooo’s” and “ahh’s” from women as James Bond or George Clooney. Whether Casa Nova or Casanova, I hope you enjoy your read and above all I hope in some way it makes you feel renewed.

1967 Elvin Nelson opened Centennial as a small plumbing parts retailer on 3rd Ave. Shortly after its inception, Centennial moved to the Adilman Building on 20th Street.
45 Years of Centennial 1993 Centennial relocated to a single location at 710-51st Street East in Saskatoon, where it still is today.
1977-1978 Centennial expanded to multiple locations including 8th Street and Millar Ave in Saskatoon as well as North Battleford, Swift Current, and Prince Albert.
2003 Centennial’s retail store was remodeled from a parts department to a high end design showroom.
1996 Arnie Shaw acquired ownership of Centennial and opened Centennial Installation & Service Corp. on Millar Ave.

he quote may be referring to jazz music, but I like to think it relates to all manner of creativity. As your designer, my goal is to make your seemingly complicated journey into the renovation world “awesomely simple.” I understand how busy you are and how little time you have to plan a renovation. The design process I use has been formulated to give you, the homeowner, a way to achieve your renovation goals without the stress of running all over town trying to piece it together. From our first consultation I get a feel for your five W’s-where, why, what,

who, and when. Where is the space that needs renovating? Whether it’s a basement, bathroom or kitchen I will carefully examine the space looking for potential. Is it possible to enlarge the space or do we work with the existing footprint? I want to know what design possibilities you are open to exploring. Why does this space need a renovation? Are there specific issues with the function of the space or is it just time to update that pink bathtub. Most times it’s both function and form that require attention. I want to know what doesn’t work for you. What are your priorities for that space?
Larger shower, jetted tub, more storage-these are some common goals for bathroom renovations. Outdated kitchens usually have a long list of priorities-better task lighting, island seating, space for new appliances- to name a few. I want to know what you absolutely can’t live without. Who is using the space? How many cooks are in the kitchen? Is the bathroom to be used by few or is it a shared bathroom for a growing family of four? Is the renovated space in the basement to be used as video game central for the crew or a cozy movie and popcorn getaway? I want to know how you see yourself and your family using

the space. When would you like to start? I want to know your expectations for starting and completing the renovation. In preparation for our second meeting I will use all the information gathered from the first to conceive the project design. This is where the creative juices really start flowing. I put all the bits and pieces together into one cohesive design package with narrowed down product choices for you. Being a true one-stop renovation shop, I can present the product and finish options from floor to ceiling that fall within your tastes.
When you arrive to view the design you will be delighted to see your new space in accurate detail with photo-realistic renderings featuring full lighting and colour effects. I will explain all the design details and how these relate to the overall project goals. Once all the final decisions are made we move to the preconstruction phase. During this phase a lot of behind the scenes action takes place. Rest assured, all product required for the renovation, down to the last plumbing fittings have been ordered, processed and made ready for the start date.

ow many times as a child were you told to colour inside the lines? The picture is already there; just fill it in with colour. Child psychologists often use drawing to help children express how they feel. The children are given a blank piece of paper and can let their imaginations soar. The picture becomes part of a story that no predesigned colouring sheet could tell. Give adults a blank piece of paper and ask them to draw their dream kitchen in their existing house. Most of them would start by drawing the walls in their current kitchen and filling them in, or in other words, they would colour inside the lines. These boundaries we set limit our creativity and, therefore, our options. What if you just drew the exterior walls of your house and then drew your dream kitchen? You may quickly realize you do have the space. Maybe you no longer need

that formal dining room that is used only at Thanksgiving and Christmas or that third spare bedroom that was abandoned when your last child moved out. The possibilities are endless when you remove those boundaries and start building outside the box.
The kitchen also opens up to the cozy living room with a quaint bar and pantry separating the rooms which was once an oak railing. By removing one wall and a railing, this dated kitchen was completely transformed into a beautiful modern masterpiece.
In this Lakeview home the kitchen is stunning. A massive granite island spans across three full length windows which flood the room with light. The custom cabinetry provides ample storage and a casual dining table was built right into the island to save space. You may think a kitchen like this can only be seen in a magazine, but the before picture reveals that this kitchen was once a dim, small, and crowded space in an average Saskatoon home. Behind the wall was a formal dining room. That space is still used for dining, but it is now integrated into the rest of the kitchen making it more conducive to entertaining guests.
Before the renovation started it was difficult to picture this beautiful space. Now it is even more difficult to picture how it was. Next time you start dreaming about a new kitchen, remove the boundaries and see where your imagination goes. You’ll be surprised how quickly a wall can be taken down and once it’s gone you’ll wonder why it was ever there.

You wouldn’t buy a pair of shoes without trying them on (unless there was a fabulous return policy), you wouldn’t buy a car without taking it for a test drive, and you shouldn’t buy a tub without lying down in it. One size does not fit all. Homes come in all different shapes and sizes and so do our bodies. Tile Myths The Truth about Tile Revealed
Myth 1: All tiles are 12” x 12”. False. We are all familiar with 12”x12” monochromatic tiles. Let’s face it; they’re everywhere! But with the manufacturing advances in ceramic & porcelain tile, nowadays we’re seeing tiles that are 24”x24”, 24”x48”, 48”x48” and even as large as 1 meter x 3 meters, giving architects and designers an array of options when developing interior spaces for private residences, schools, malls or airports. These same cutting edge manufacturers are using one of two new design methods which basically take a plain porcelain tile and impose a design or image onto the tile before the tile is glazed. Why? I’m glad you asked! This is a cost effective way to achieve a natural stone look without the high price.
Myth 3: Tile can be installed over any surface. True. Advancements in the manufacturing of porcelain and ceramic tile along with its adhesives have increased and evolved beyond what the average person understands or expects. We just want it to look pretty. Any finished tile project is only as good as its installation so having

the grout joints need to be wider to accommodate for the variation. When selecting grout colour, be sure to select a colour that won’t compete with the tile selection. In some applications, the grout is meant to be an accent, but use caution…when the grout colour is a contrasting colour it will also highlight the imperfections of the installation or the size variation.
Myth 2: Colour and pattern in your purchased tile can vary from the sample. True. Have you ever heard of someone buying tile that was different colours throughout even though it was supposed to be all the same? Colour variation is visible from tile to tile and batch to batch and some tiles vary more than others. So how can you avoid unwanted surprises? Tiles are given a grade based on their variation. Check with your distributor to ensure you are purchasing quality consistent tile that will meet your expectations. If you see two tiles that look the same, but vary in price, it is likely that it has to do with their variation grades. I’ve heard far too much disappointment from homeowners who tried to save a buck. Trust me; it’s worth the extra pennies per square foot!

Myth 4: Grout is grout is grout. False. Did you know that grout joints are dependant on the size consistency of your selected tile? They are! We’ve seen a design trend recently for tiles to have smaller and smaller grout joints as it decreases lines in your tile installation. Be sure you select a tile that is consistent from piece to piece. This way your installer will be able to place the tiles closer together in order to achieve this look. If the tiles are inconsistent,

False. “I’d like this tile, please…what do you mean it’s not in stock?!” It’s likely that you haven’t driven by a tile manufacturing plant recently. In 2009, 30 million squared meters of tile was purchased in Canada, while only 3% of it was manufactured in our Great White North. And where do you think it comes from? Tile is manufactured all over the world, and so it requires all kinds of logistics and intricate shipping details to have it arrive at your home ready for install. work that will help prevent unwanted surprises. 1) If you are removing a wall, the first question to ask is, “What else is that wall holding up? Is there a structural purpose for it?” Have a structural engineer or another qualified professional look at it to make a recommendation before you go out and buy a sawzall and rent a dumpster. 2) Are you going to live in your home during your renovation? Depending on the extent of your reno, you may want to make other living arrangements, especially if you are remodeling the only bathroom in your house.
6) While doing a renovation you may find things you didn’t expect. Uncovering problems from previous work that was poorly done, water damage, or general deterioration of the home can quickly change the scope of any renovation. Be prepared to make adjustments to your plan. Once you have considered all of these factors you will have a much better idea of the budget and timeline for your renovation. If you no longer feel like you have the magic touch of Mike Holmes after considering these points, you may want to hire a contractor. Your renovation may not be done in 30 minutes, but the result will be well worth the wait.
3) Are you renovating to sell or to stay? Both options have merit, but your future plans may determine the quality of product you select and your budget.

After 24 years in the trades, I have encountered some of the best renovation work in the city and some of the worst. Although the many home improvement shows on TV can be inspiring and empowering, they are not always the most realistic and can lead people astray. Homeowners are attempting renovations without knowing all of the facts. There are a few points to consider before starting your 26

4) Be sure to share your vision with the contractor or designer. If you are doing the renovation yourself, ensure your materials provider knows what you want. Stay involved with the planning and design aspect of the renovation to make it your own. You will take pride in your new space for years to come if you are involved. 5) Are you significantly altering the arrangement of your plumbing fixtures, changing the structure of your home, or doing electrical upgrades? All of these require plumbing, building, or electrical permits and approval by a local inspector at different phases of the project to ensure everything is completed to code.

o you ever feel like something is too good to be true? Like your dream is possible, but only in another life? Maybe you have a dream job in mind, but it would require you to move your family across the country; or you want to start a business, but the market isn’t favorable; or you want a big contemporary house with vaulted ceilings and a walk out basement, but you do not want to leave your mature family-friendly neighbourhood. Although you can’t always have everything in life, there are situations when you can have your cake and eat it too. This was the case for a family living on 9th Ave in Saskatoon. An 1,100 square foot character home from the 1940s sat just two blocks from beautiful Spadina Cresent in Saskatoon. The exterior was worn and the interior was small and dated. A creaky narrow staircase led to the cold basement and was dangerous, to say the least. The

and Eat it Too. kitchen was cramped. It was barely wide enough to open the oven door. The house had quirks, that’s for sure, but these quirks were apart of its character; a character that the homeowners had grown to love. The family living in this home loved their location, their neighbours, and the memories they had built there, but they were ready for a change. New cabinets could freshen up the kitchen and paint would brighten the rooms, but neither were enough to revitalize the home and it certainly would not fix the dangerous basement staircase. It seemed like they would either have to settle for minor upgrades or move. Neither option was ideal.
Forced into thinking differently, the homeowners decided that there might be one more option. The house was on a long lot with a large backyard. This gave them enough room to do a complete addition giving them a large spacious kitchen, vaulted ceilings, a new master bedroom and bathroom, a walk out basement, and of course a new safe staircase. A total of 18’ was added to the back of the house. The vaulted ceilings reach a height of 28’ at the peak with three skylights. Despite building a new roof and temporarily removing 10’ of the existing home, the family was able to continue living in their house for the entire renovation process. Nobody likes to make an unexpected visit to the doctor, just like no one wants to make an unexpected call to a plumber, or any service technician, for that matter. Unfortunately, just like our bodies, sometimes the equipment in our home breaks down and requires some professional assistance. An apple a day may not keep the plumber away, but there are some preventative things every homeowner can do to limit unexpected service technicians’ house calls. To make sure we don’t misdiagnose the issue, we sat down with Centennial’s Service Specialist, Dr. Steven Simpson, to get some advice. C - Dr. Simpson, can you take us through a few things homeowners should be aware of when it comes to the guts of their home? S- “You know I’m not really a doctor, right? Technicalities aside, it is a good analogy. The anatomy of your body is comparable to the plumbing, heating, and electrical components of your home. There are a lot of things that homeowners can do to prevent breakdowns in their homes, similar to precautions you would take to avoid getting sick. Let’s start with the furnace. The furnace is like the heart of your home. In the same way your heart delivers warm, oxygenated blood through your arteries to the rest of your body, your furnace delivers warm air through vents to the extremities of your home. “ centennialrenostudio.com

C - What is the most common house call you make with respect to furnaces? S - “Without a doubt, no heat calls. When you have no heat, your home is in cardiac arrest. These are top priority calls, especially in the dead of winter.” C - How can one prevent their home from going into “cardiac arrest”? S - “The first step is to have an annual tune-up. This is no different than going for your regular physical. The technician will be able to diagnose any potential problems at this time. Homeowners also need to take care of their system by replacing their furnace filter regularly. Every home is different, but on average filters should be replaced every 2-3 months. Having a dirty filter is like having clogged arteries; it restricts air flow causing undue stress to the furnace motor just as restricted blood flow causes undue stress to the heart. Healthy air flow for your home is also healthy for you.” C - How does the air flow in my home affect my health? S - “Proper ventilation in your home means proper ventilation for you. You breathe the air in your home so it is important that it is fresh. Your lungs oxygenate your blood so it is refreshed once again for your body. A heat recovery ventilator is like the lungs of your home. It brings the old air out of the home and pumps in fresh air from outside. Homes are now being built with extra insulation and triple pane windows to prevent the inside air from escaping for efficiency purposes. The only problem with that is that no outside air is coming in either. Imagine being trapped in a small enclosed space for a long period of time. The air would get stale and the carbon dioxide would make it difficult to breathe. If your home is completely air tight this can start to happen. An HRV ensures fresh air is being brought in and is warmed by the heat from the exiting air making the exchange healthier for the environment and healthier for your wallet.” C - What about the electrical system in your home? What should homeowners be aware of? S - “Your electrical system is like your Central Nervous System. It sends out messages to your home like your brain sends messages to your body. When I flick a switch I expect a light to come on. If it doesn’t something is not communicating. That is the most common call we get related to electrical.” C - What is the cause of a “Central Nervous System” breakdown? S - “Old age. The wiring in your home is simply getting too old and not communicating properly. We also see breakdowns from having too much strain on the system. Homeowners are adding electronics to their home such as TVs, sound systems, computers, etc., that demand a lot of power. Sometimes the electrical panel needs to be upgraded to handle this messaging overload.” C - So our home has a heart and a Central Nervous System. What else keeps our home functioning?

S - “Nobody can live without a Gastrointestinal Tract and neither can your home, at least not comfortably anyway. This is where your plumbing comes into play. Your home’s GI Tract consists of all the pipes for proper drainage. Sometimes unwanted clogs or blockages happen in people and homes, but they can be relieved in very different ways. If your sink, tub, or toilet is draining slowly, we can scope your system to see where the problem is. Don’t worry; we’ll be gentle. We will make sure to get you all cleared out.”
C - That’s nice that you will be gentle, but I’m sure no one wants to experience that! How can I prevent having this procedure done, Steven? S - “Don’t wait for it to become painful...to the pocketbook. If you know it is slowing down, give us a call right away. You can also give your system a little “X-Lax” every once in awhile. I recommend using an eco-friendly cleaner such as Bio-Clean to clear your system. These cleaners are safe for the environment and will not corrode your pipes. That is really painful!” C - Steven, thank you for taking the time to sit down with us today. One last question for our readers, what are some of the most common concerns homeowners have when you come for a house call? S - “They often just don’t know what to expect especially when they have not experienced the symptoms before. They want to know how much it is going to cost and how much time they will have to take off from work. When our technician arrives at the home they will take the homeowner through an agenda so they know exactly what to expect. He or she will diagnose the problem and discuss options and pricing with the homeowner before any procedures begin. Once the work is complete the technician will explain to the homeowner exactly what was done and what to expect in the future. If any issues persist, we take care of our patients!”
