From the Owners 50 Years: A Celebration of What Was, What Is & What’s Still to Come Celebrating 50 years is something my brotherin-law and business partner, Michael, and I are extremely honoured to be doing this year with Centennial 360. We are very fortunate to have had a long history in such a great city. Thank you, Saskatoon! I have just recently had the pleasure of being in a room with Arnie Shaw, (Centennial’s current President) and Elvin Nelson (Founder of Centennial in 1967) while the two reminisced about where Centennial came from and the reason for its early success. After hearing all the stories and what both men had to say, I was left with one overwhelming feeling: how grateful the two men are for the support of Saskatoon homeowners and rural farmers. It was clear to me that Centennial’s longevity is rooted in the relationships and trust it

has created with its clients. The tradition of helping, educating, and inspiring Saskatoon homeowners, and leaving them with a remarkable positive experience continues to be the aim of every team member at Centennial 360 today. Michael and I are thrilled to be working with such great people who have dedicated themselves to helping people in their homes. Our team members and the relationships they build with clients are the reason we are able to celebrate 50 years in Saskatoon. Michael and I are delighted to be taking Centennial 360 into the future, bringing you along with us. With the continued support of our clients and team, we know this future is going to be bright! We recognize that as the city that raised us changes, so too will Centennial 360. Change is constant and something we look forward to. Taking time to reflect during this 50 year celebration has shown us that the common thread throughout the years of Centennial 360’s success has been a firm commitment to building trusted relationships. Michael and I know that it is our clients, coworkers, and community that have made Centennial 360 what it was, what it is, and what it will become in the future, and we are so grateful. From both of us to you, thank you. We could not have gotten here without you! Sincerely, Steven Simpson & Michael Shaw

THE ESSENTIAL

360 5 DAYS | $10,995 1 AWESOME BATHROOM RENOVATION

“This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.” Light is attractive. It sparkles, it dances, and it shines. Light dispels darkness. When light breaks through the night, we can’t help but look upon it with admiration. A single star in the sky brings so much joy, wonderment, and hope. But light is not only found in the constellations. There is a different kind of light that shines from within each human heart. In each moment of kindness, gentleness, patience, humility, and compassion there is a light bursting forth that cannot be hidden. This kind of light deserves celebration. This edition of LOOK 360 is all about celebrations. Celebrating successes, celebrating memories, celebrating life. At Centennial 360 we are celebrating our 50th birthday. As we reflect on the memories of the past, it is the light we have shared and received from each of our clients, coworkers, and community partners that makes us proud to be where we are today. Whether we are fixing a toilet or furnace or renovating your dream kitchen, it is the relationship we build with you that lights up our day. Thank you for shining your light on us for 50 years! As you read this 6th edition of LOOK 360, I hope each article inspires you to let your little light shine. Maya Angelou once said, “Nothing can dim the light which shines from within.” When we let our light shine, darkness breaks and creates space for new light. Choose to share this light with the world – the light that was lit by love. “Let it shine, let it shine, let it shine.” Shine Bright & Be Awesome. RENOVATION

NOSTALGIA

8

Centennial 360

RENOVATIONNOSTALGIA

R

enovations are met with mixed emotions. There is excitement for something new. There is fear of the unknown. There is joy in the satisfaction of completing a project. There is anxiety over costs and life disruptions. These are the expected emotions that come with renovating, but there is another feeling that often goes unmentioned – nostalgia. This sentiment is a mixture of sadness and joy. As Michael Chabon puts it in his article, The True Meaning of Nostalgia, in The New Yorker, “Nostalgia is the ache that arises from the consciousness of lost connection.” Nostalgia is a feeling that comes when we reflect on something that is or will be no more. It is the unexpected emotion of renovating. What comes along with the joy of building something new is the inevitability of saying goodbye. You know that it is time for new carpet, but the stains on the floor are memories of laughter with family and friends. The walls need painting, but this was the paint colour your late husband selected when you first got married. Removing the wall between the dining room and kitchen will open up your space and make it more functional, but on the other side of that wall are chicken scratch markings and crayon identifiers of your children’s growth over the years. You know your house needs an upgrade, but it is hard to let go of the daily reminders of your family that are built into the fabric of your home. These reminders are what makes home so magical. A house is not just a house. A house becomes a home the second a person leaves an imprint of their life on it. It is a reflection of you and your family. This is the place where you feel the most comfort and peace. This is where you are free to be you. Your home is filled with memories and reminders of your life. And yet, your life is changing. And change is good. As your life and the lives of your children

centennial360.com

9

RENOVATIONNOSTALGIA change, it is necessary for your home to change too. Since your lifestyle has different requirements, you also require new things of your home. Perhaps your children have moved out and you no longer need five bedrooms. The basement rooms can be turned into a home gym, and the main bathroom can be made smaller while the ensuite is enlarged. Maybe you are expecting your first child and your home needs carpets and closets. It is time to change your dressing room into a nursery and to baby proof your home. Maybe you have reached your later years and you aren’t as mobile as you once were. You plan to stay at home for many more years, but life would be easier with laundry located on the main floor and a seat built into your shower. Your home is built for you to live in, so it must adapt to best allow you to do just that. The designers and renovation technicians at Centennial 360 have adapted thousands of Saskatoon homes to better fit homeowners’ lives, and have found there are endless reasons for renovating – some have to do with lifestyle change, and some are simply about style change. Either way, the change is good, even if it means we have to let go. The nostalgia that comes along with renovating is a good and healthy feeling. It is good to remember and cherish the memories that are

10

Centennial 360

built into your home. It is also good to let go so new memories can be made. With a kitchen, bathroom, or whole home renovation, you are creating a fresh slate for memories, and you don’t have to let go of everything. One of the beauties of renovating is that although the landscape has been cultivated, the original soil is still in place. You are still within the four walls in which your memories were made and your familiar neighbourhood still surrounds you. Your imprint reaches far beyond the carpet, paint, and drywall of your home. What transforms a house into a home is the people who live in it. What transforms your house into your home is you! Your imprint cannot be removed from your home nor from your neighbourhood. While renovating your home, you will create new marks with each selection and decision you make. As you experience the excitement, fear, joy, anxiety, and nostalgia of renovating, live in the moment, and know that you are building something new to better serve you, your family, and your friends. If nostalgia is the feeling that comes when reflecting on a lost connection, then there must also be room to create a new connection. Take time to joyfully remember those things of the past, and then move forward to create a new connection with the beautiful space that surrounds you here and now.

athroom conversations can be uncomfortable. We get it. It’s a place of privacy. But it’s time to open up. The reality is you spend a considerable amount of time in your bathroom every day. From showering and getting ready for the day to relaxing in the tub and sitting down to take a…break from the kids, this is one of the most important and most well used rooms in the house.

With so much use, the bathrooms in your home need to not only function well, but they also need to be space efficient. While some have the luxury of a bathroom that is equal to the size of the master bedroom, most homeowners have very limited space to work with. Getting creative with your design is often the key to transforming a bathroom from a place you tolerate to a space you love.

TRADING SPACE In this Bridges Award winning bathroom renovation, the Centennial 360 design team had to go beyond the existing four walls to find a space saving solution. The existing ensuite was cramped, while the layout of the adjacent main bath had plenty of room, but was inefficient. The homeowners decided that they were willing to sacrifice a little room in the main bath to expand the ensuite. With two young children, the homeowners still needed a full tub and shower in their main bathroom, so a wall hung sink and toilet were incorporated into the design in order to save space. By thinking outside the box, these Lakeview homeowners were able to achieve the best of both worlds.

LET THERE BE LIGHT The main bath in this university home has the character that movies are made of. The angled ceiling and the window overlooking campus grounds are beautiful design features that were blocked off by a shower wall in the middle of the room. The bathroom was functional, but the layout made it feel small and dark. Centennial 360’s renovation team refreshed the room with new fixtures and by brightening up the colours. A custom shower with a glass panel replaced the closed off space to let the light in.

KITCHEN

THEKITCHEN

T

he kitchen is the gathering place in every home. It was made for food, and food was made for people. People naturally gravitate toward the kitchen, so why not make it just as homey as the rest of your house. While kitchens are all about functionality, they should also be about character.

Let your kitchen reflect the beauty of your family. When starting a kitchen renovation, think about your family’s lifestyle and culture. What will make this kitchen your kitchen. It is when the rooms in your house tell a little story of who you are that they truly start to feel like home.

Law of Nature #1: Bringing natural elements into your home is always a good thing. Nature is refreshing and brings life to everything. The Lakeridge homeowners of this kitchen love nature. They needed to renovate their kitchen, but didn’t

want to lose the natural oak features throughout their home. Centennial 360’s designers helped the homeowners select colours and features that would complement the existing natural wood. Stone Tile’s Paradox porcelain ties the kitchen into the rest of the home with its earthy tones, and the oak trim was retained in the feature window. If you already have natural elements in your home, take the opportunity to accentuate them.

LAWS OF NATURE

Law of Nature #2: Natural light is a game changer. While artificial accent lighting is beautiful at night, nothing compares to the light of the sun. To bring light into this kitchen, the Centennial 360 renovation team turned one wall into an open peninsula. The light from the front windows now floods the kitchen and brightens the whole home. Law of Nature #3: Be kind to your environment. Recycling and reusing during a renovation is definitely possible and is encouraged. During this kitchen renovation, it was very important to the homeowners that nothing went to waste. They were able to find a new owner for their kitchen cabinets and they recycled and reused as many products as possible. These homeowners are definitely friends of nature.

BUILDING CHARACTER If your home has character, build it up with your renovation rather than tearing it down. This Varsity View home is filled with beautiful historical accents. Although the kitchen needed to be refreshed, the character simply needed to be enhanced. CELEBRATING

A 50 YEAR LEGACY

centennial360.com

50YEARLEGACY

T

here are several companies across Canada that have the name Centennial as part of their business identity. While the name Centennial has a nice ring to it, it is not a common name from popularity alone. Upon further investigation, you may discover that many of the Centennial named companies across Canada were founded in 1967; this holds true for Saskatoon’s own Centennial 360, or known to many as Centennial Plumbing, Heating & Electrical. While all Canadians were celebrating their country’s 150th birthday this year, Centennial 360 has been celebrating their 50th birthday, marking 50 years since Canada’s centennial year. In 1967, plumbers Elvin Nelson and Ray Jagow were struggling to make ends meet in the difficult home services industry of the time. While continuing their trades on the side, the two entrepreneurs decided that retail was the place to be. Elvin and Ray opened an antique store called Century Antiques on 3rd Avenue in Saskatoon. Shortly after they opened their doors, a customer suggested to Elvin that he put his plumbing and heating expertise to use and sell parts for mechanical equipment instead. Elvin’s response to the young man was simply, “Good idea!” Elvin and Ray sold off their antiques, and Centennial Plumbing, Heating & Electrical was born.

32

Centennial 360

Elvin had knowledge to share on plumbing, heating, and electrical parts, but it was his way with people that drove customers to the store and made it the place it became locally famous for. Elvin and his team built relationships with their clients as they helped them solve their mechanical mysteries. Elvin’s philosophy at the time was, “Kiss them on the way in, and kiss them on the way out.” Each customer was greeted like family and left feeling like they were saying goodbye to friends. With this relationship building model, the company grew and grew. In 1975, Centennial Plumbing, Heating & Electrical moved to the Adilman building on 20th Street, and it wasn’t long before all three floors were filled with home service parts and plumbing fixtures. Centennial was leaving a mark in Saskatoon and Elvin was leaving his own imprint in the home services industry as an innovator of DIY advice. As popularity grew, the company expanded to locations across Saskatchewan. Stores opened up in Prince Albert, North Battleford, and Swift Current, as well as multiple locations in Saskatoon. Business was thriving until the economic downturn of the 1980s. While customers still loved the service and the parts that were available to them, Elvin knew

Centennial 360 Owners, Steven Simpson & Michael Shaw, Learning From the Company’s Founder, Elvin Nelson it was time to consolidate down to one store back in Saskatoon. During this time Elvin was also getting ready to pass the business along to new hands that would bring fresh perspective. Both Elvin’s son, Greg Nelson, and long-time business consultant of Centennial, Arnie Shaw, were interested in carrying on the legacy Elvin and Ray had built. “I felt it was a really good business. The name Centennial Plumbing, Heating & Electrical was synonymous with customer experience, and that is why I wanted to get involved,” says Arnie. In 1993, Greg and Arnie partnered together and bought Centennial Plumbing, Heating & Electrical. The store opened on 51st Street, where it still stands today.

big box stores like Home Depot were on their way. While many disagreed that Saskatoon would ever reach a size that would attract these stores, Arnie persisted and continued to diversify the business. When Home Depot opened its doors in 2000, Arnie and the Centennial Plumbing, Heating & Electrical team was ready. While the company lost over $1.4 million in retail that year, the home service department increased by $1.5 million, making Arnie’s vision a life-saving success for Centennial Plumbing, Heating & Electrical. Once Home Depot arrived, all of the local companies in the industry had to re-strategize.

After a few years, Arnie and his wife, Linda Shaw, decided to buy the entire business as Greg moved on to other pursuits. It was at this time that Arnie developed his vision to diversify the company to focus more on in-home plumbing, heating, and electrical service. While retail was the stronger market when Elvin founded the company, competition and economic pressures had shifted the industry to be more viable in inhome service. Centennial always had a plumbing, heating, and electrical service department, but Arnie saw an opportunity to continue the legacy of a remarkable customer experience by expanding their in-home services. This expansion did not happen just because Arnie had a passion for home services. Arnie knew this change was going to be necessary to keep this locally iconic business alive. After travels across the world, Arnie could see that Saskatoon was growing and that Arnie Shaw with Billboards from the 1990s centennial360.com

33

50YEARLEGACY Selling only plumbing, heating, and electrical parts was not enough to compete. Instead, Arnie and the Centennial team ventured into the world of home design. Throughout the 2000s, the retail parts store turned into a design showroom filled with beautiful kitchen and bath plumbing fixtures, cabinetry, and tile. Since service was growing and Centennial now had all kinds of products to sell and install, clients started requesting full bathroom and kitchen renovations. In 2006, Centennial launched a renovation and design department to deliver a more holistic customer experience. Over the next five years, renovations continued to grow and the company continued to expand. Centennial’s renovation department was now taking on whole home renovation projects, home additions, and even ventured out to build custom homes.

law, Steven Simpson, bought the business to carry on the legacy built by Elvin, Ray, and their father. “When Arnie first asked our family about our interest in joining the Centennial team, I was immediately in,” explains Steven. “I saw that the company was about helping people and making people happy. My desire to join did not come from a passion for flame sensors, but rather a passion to carry on the positive legacy of helping others.” Steven, an elementary school teacher, has a natural gift for helping others learn. He joined the team as the service manager to help guide and teach the Centennial 360 technicians. The training he gives the technicians is not on how to fix things, but rather on communication and delivering the remarkable customer experience that has been long engrained in the company’s history.

With all of these changes, it is safe to say the name Centennial Plumbing, Heating & Electrical was no longer encompassing the company’s services. In 2013, the company name was changed to Centennial 360 to represent the services provided for every stage of the homeownership cycle - from building, to buying products, to renovating and maintaining homes. Arnie and Linda had built Centennial 360 on a solid foundation and knew it was time to pass it along to their children. SOMEDAY INTO TODAY How Darla & Lloyd Isaak turned their someday renovation into their today reality.

D

arla & Lloyd Isaak had been thinking about renovating their Broadway area home for over ten years. They knew that someday they wanted a brighter space that would be more functional for both them and their growing daughter. As time passed, it became more and more apparent that they needed to make a decision. Although the Isaaks knew they wanted a change, the kind of change was still up for debate. As Lloyd describes it, they had two choices: “We were at a crossroads. We could either move to an upgraded house or stay at the same location.” The common dilemma between moving and renovating was at the forefront. There were two main factors that guided them to their decision. “Every time we looked at a new build it was in the suburbs and we didn’t want to be there. We loved the location of our current home, and everything we saw we felt was really a compromise to the structure and bones of what we felt we already had,” Lloyd explains. The Isaaks’ home is in a beautiful neighbourhood and is adorned with fourteen south facing windows. Although the current layout was restricting the function and flow of the home, the windows gave it great potential to make it the bright and welcoming space they desired. Maximizing the flow of light within the home was one of their main goals, and they knew they could accomplish that right where they were. The other influencing factor for renovating had less to do with the structure of the home and more to do with the memories they had built there. Darla and Lloyd love to host. Lloyd has a culinary gift, and he enjoys sharing it with his guests. Darla has an infectious positivity and makes everyone who enters her home feel like family. Over the sixteen years they have lived in their home, Darla and Lloyd have hosted almost every family Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter dinner. Their house is the gathering place for their entire family. Over their Christmas celebrations in 2015, Darla and Lloyd shared their thoughts on renovating or building with their family. They discussed their “someday” plans. Shortly after Christmas, the Isaak family lost Darla’s father. This tragedy put new perspective on the thought of “someday” for Darla and Lloyd. “We had lost a lot of really close people to us over the course of the past three to five years, and were watching our daughter grow up so quickly. We saw how fast all of this had happened and we just decided that we had better get on with it while we could,” Lloyd explains. They realized life takes unexpected turns, so why not turn their “someday” into today. It was time to take action on this longterm decision. But now, more than ever, renovating, 3844 Centennial 360 Centennial 360

Lloyd & Darla Enjoying Their New Living Room rather than moving, felt like the right decision. “As a family, we have all shared time and space in this house. Our house is the home base for family events and special occasions. It’s not just our place; our entire family has memories that live here,” expresses Darla. With this in mind, Darla and Lloyd knew they wanted this home to continue to be their family’s home base for many more years to come. Once the decision to renovate was made, the Isaak’s got started on their project right away. With the help of Centennial 360’s renovation and design team, Darla and Lloyd were able to create a design that would maximize light in their home and give them a floorplan that was more functional for their family’s lifestyle. “We started by critically reviewing where we were at in our lives and the way that we plan to live in the space,” says Darla. “Cooking and entertaining with family and friends was an important consideration too. Knowing that the party is always in the kitchen, we decided that its design must be functional and still make the room a prominent feature.” Being skilled with cooking, Lloyd was leaning toward a commercial style kitchen with stainless steel countertops. To balance the highly reflective surfaces, Darla and Lloyd decided to incorporate natural woods into the kitchen and throughout the home. Their existing hardwood floors were stripped and refinished, and they added reclaimed wood accents. “We

SOMEDAYINTOTODAY engaged local timber master, Lincoln Dobson of Last Mountain Timber,” explains Darla. “He salvaged wood from the demolished Parrish and Heimbecker mill in Saskatoon. The repurposed wood is intentionally imperfect.” The Isaaks also chose to incorporate the over one hundred year old wood into the mantle on their fireplace. “Several pieces were selected to strategically bind the rooms together in a ribbon of warmth and character,” Lloyd adds. “It also harkens back to the agricultural roots of this province and our ties to our farm family heritage.” The next area of the home that needed attention was the main living room. The current space had a separate focal point on each wall, making the space uninviting and causing a lack of cohesion. “We had an issue in our living room. We had three different focal points. Moving everything onto the west wall has streamlined everything and allows us to actually enjoy that room now,” says Darla. In addition to the organizational change of the room, the Isaaks also desired more light. Due to structural restrictions, the wall between the kitchen and living room could not be removed, so the Centennial 360 design team had to get creative. In the stairwell to the upper floor there was a skylight. To maximize the potential of the natural light, the

wall of the stairwell was replaced with glass, letting the light shine through. “I love that we opened up the upper floor to the main floor with glass,” Darla expresses. Darla really does love her house. When asked what has been the most enjoyable thing about the renovation, Lloyd responded, “Every time Darla walks into the house she says, ‘Wow! I love this place!’ It has been months since we renovated and that feeling is still there.” And Darla and Lloyd do not love their house because of size. “Our house is not any bigger. We just have a better connection to it now,” says Darla. “We don’t need more space. We just wanted to optimize what we had and make it more responsive to how we live,” Lloyd adds. On the more pragmatic side, Lloyd also mentioned another part of the renovation that is often forgotten. “We had Centennial 360 change our furnace, water heater, water softener, air exchanger, and air conditioner. The new air conditioner is a quieter model, so it doesn’t disturb our neighbours as much. We are also now able to draw enough hot water to fill the upstairs Jacuzzi tub. This is an unspoken part of the renovation, but these essential pieces of equipment were really important to the quality of water, air, and heat in our home.” Renovations often involve more than

Darla & Lloyd’s Living Room After Their Whole Home Renovation by Centennial 360 centennial360.com

39

SOMEDAYINTOTODAY what meets the eye. The mechanical components are just as important as the design. And sometimes there are little additions in a renovation that can make a major impact, like the closet and pantry Darla and Lloyd added to their back entrance. With a detached back garage, the Isaaks had never had a place near their back door for coats and boots. By changing the orientation of the back door swing, they were able to add a closet without causing disruption to the flow of their kitchen. It is not always the big things that make all the difference. Darla and Lloyd’s “someday” is now a reality for them, and they are so happy they finally made the change. Their house is more responsive to their lifestyle, and every day they come home to a place they love. Even though they are thrilled

about their renovation, they are also relieved it is over. The Isaaks know first hand that renovating is a daunting task. For those who are on the fence about a project, Lloyd offers this advice: “I’ve been a project manager for years, and what I have learned is that you have to be realistic with budgets and with schedules, and you have to work with a contractor who is honest and has your best interests in mind. While there are always surprises, there were no catastrophic surprises in our renovation. The Centennial 360 team brought the project in on budget and on schedule.” Sometimes a big life event will be the catalyst to help you get going on a big project, and other times you just need a little encouragement. Either way, the goal is to not waste time waiting for the right moment. Instead, make today the right moment, and start living your best life in your home.

There is an art to being able to find the perfectly sized spot to hide away each of your treasured belongings. Perfect organization brings us extreme satisfaction. Storage solutions help us become more organized, or they at least give us a place to conceal our mess. Proper storage is desirable in every area of your home - even in your shower. Almost every custom shower designed for a Centennial 360 bathroom renovation includes a built-in storage niche. Due to popularity, the bathroom niche market has diversified over the years. Niches were once limited to a custom piece incorporated into your tile layout. Now many manufacturers have designed unique styles of niches. Q&A:ANDREWKESLER

S

askatoon’s own Andrew Kesler has been making his mark on the music scene in L.A. and beyond. As an internationally acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger, engineer, and producer, Andrew has worked alongside some of the music business’s best. He has performed with touring musicians for Meghan Trainor, Michael Bolton, Rihanna, and Lionel Richie, and Q&A with Andrew Kesler has produced and arranged for Grammy award winning a cappella group, Pentatonix. Growing up with exposure to music and performing, Andrew moved from Saskatoon to Toronto after high school to pursue studies in jazz piano and music production at Humber College. Andrew moved to L.A. in 2015 to further diversify his career, and has since performed with Dreamgirls’ Jennifer Holliday, Robbie Williams, John Mayer, Pat Benatar, Seal, Babyface, Eric Benét, and David Foster, to name a few. He also recently appeared as a sideman on America’s Got Talent. With a wide range of performance gigs and production contracts, the project Andrew is currently most passionate about is his jazz vocal group, Accent, which features six members from five different countries, including Andrew and fellow Saskatonian, Danny Fong. Accent released their latest album, “In This Together”, in August. Although Andrew’s opportunities in L.A. are thriving, he has still taken on some small local projects, like our radio jingle at Centennial 360. We recently had an opportunity to chat with Andrew to learn more about his career in the big city of stars:

SK to LA

C360 - How did a Saskatoon boy end up producing, performing, and engineering music in L.A.? Andrew - It all began at a young age. While most kids were listening to Raffi, my dad was showing me Hendrix records. The sounds he made with his electric guitar mesmerized me and it didn’t take long before I was able to mimic some of the things I was hearing. As the years went on, I took lessons on a number of instruments and began learning the nuts and bolts of music theory. Opportunities in high school allowed for me to get out of the basement and collaborate with others, branching out to jazz and classical music. After careful consideration I decided to study jazz piano and music production at Humber College in Toronto. I continued to live and work there as a freelancer doing a variety of jobs: performing, composing, arranging, engineering, and producing. I then got the chance to work with music legend, Al Schmitt, a recording engineer with over 20 Grammy awards under his belt. He encouraged me to make the move to Los Angeles and now, here I am!

C360 - How have you achieved success in L.A. and what projects are you currently working on? Andrew - One of my strengths that has set me apart is my versatility. The reason I’m working regularly and building up a great rolodex of friends in the industry is because I’m able to hop between gigs pretty effortlessly. Right now I’m working on the sound design and mix for a new surfing documentary. In addition, a couple groups have commissioned me to write some vocal arrangements. I’m usually performing on the weekends in a variety of bands, for which I also write the charts and act as musical director. In my free time I’m studying orchestration. I’m also in a jazz a cappella group called Accent, and we just released our new album, “In This Together”. We’re working on promoting the new record and planning more projects and tours in the coming months. C360 - Which project has been the most honouring for you to be a part of?

Andrew - Accent is my biggest passion project at the

moment. All six of us in the group live in different cities, so you can imagine how much effort it takes to be productive at such great distances. This group exemplifies everything that I value about music; we are pushing the genre of vocal jazz into new territory, we bring out the best in each other, we are able to connect and share amazing experiences with people all over the world, we are constantly learning and teaching, and we’re living proof that despite the turbulent times we live in, people from different countries with unique backgrounds can get along and create something special. I will always have my personal ambitions, of course, but the shared message we send with Accent is so much more powerful than what any of us can achieve individually. www.accentvocal.com C360 - What makes you proud about being from Saskatoon? Andrew - I’m proud of the people of Saskatoon. Anytime I come home I feel welcome, despite now living in a place that feels vastly foreign by comparison. The community is one of substance, and is just the right size that you feel well connected, yet there’s still always more to discover. I always found this true of the local music scene. We have some amazing world class artists in our town, and lots of opportunity for the young up-and-comers. C360 - What is in store for the future of Andrew Kesler? Andrew - It’s too early to decide if Los Angeles will be my permanent home, but I plan on remaining here in the short term. I’m always learning and trying to better my craft. It helps that L.A. is full of incredibly virtuosic musicians, and many of are them genuine people as well. I’m always trying to put myself in situations where I’m the least qualified person in the room (which isn’t too hard here), where I’m kept on my toes, and where I’m put in situations of trial-by-fire. Nothing sharpens you like these moments. Either you’re lucky enough to find a way through it, or you become immediately aware of what you need to work on.

RAISE YOUR

GLASS E

arlier this year, CBC News released information from Stats Canada that Canadian spending on alcohol has increased by 3.5% over the last year. Although beer is still ranked number one in the hearts of Canadians, wine is gradually creeping up on the popularity charts. Wine is no longer considered to be just a special occasion beverage. Many homeowners enjoy a glass of wine casually with their dinner or as a complement to their evening reading time. Over the last few years, Centennial 360 renovation designers have seen an increase in requests for wine storage to be incorporated into cabinet layouts. With wine drinking becoming more frequent and casual, homeowners want their beverage of choice more conveniently located right in their kitchen. And not only is it convenient, but the bottles double as a dĂŠcor piece in the home - a perfect staging piece for the Canadian wine lover. So raise your glass to wine for being a favourite drink for entertaining or relaxing, and for giving everything an extra touch of class.

NK`MIP QwAM QwMT 2015

Produced in limited quantities by Inkameep cellars in Osoyoos in the South Okanagan, this full-bodied chardonnay gives aromas and flavours of ripe tropical and stone fruit. Aging in French oak barrels for ten months produces a rich, creamy texture. A great wine with creamy dishes, poultry, and rich seafood, such as lobster and shrimp.

GLEN Carlou

ZINCK 2013

Characteristic of wines from Alsace (a wine region in the northeast of France), Zinck Riesling is a dry wine with a fine balance of acidity and fruit, and just a hint of residual sugar. Bursts of lime and granny smith apple acidity make this wine a good pairing for many dishes, including those with Asian spiciness.

2013

La Vieille Fermé 2016

Southern Rhone in France produces some of the world’s best rosés. La Vieille Fermé, a blend of Cinsault, Grenache, and Syrah grapes, is a dry, light to medium-bodied rosé with delicate aromas of strawberry and raspberry and a hint of anise. Citrus and light red berry flavours make this a great summer sipper, as well as a wine for light summer dishes of meats and vegetables.

Find these delicious wines at Ingredients in Saskatoon. Wine descriptions written by Jerome from Ingredients.

From the Paarl region of South Africa, this wine is the classic blend of the five grapes used in the famous Bordeaux region of France: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. Deep in colour, Glen Carlou has an intense nose of dark red fruit, herbs, and violets. Smooth on the palate, yet complex and concentrated, it features flavours of black fruits, chocolate, and licorice spice. With a rich lingering finish, it pairs well with full-bodied meat dishes.

SQUID’S FIST 2012

Produced by Some Young Punks, a winery in South Australia, The Squid’s Fist combines the fresh acidity of Sangiovese with the fruitiness, body, and spiciness of Shiraz. Dark in colour and medium-bodied, this wine is a red cherry bomb with smooth tannins. In search of savoury and spicy foods, this wine is great with barbequed meats.

GETTING

CRAFTY P

interest, YouTube, and educational blogs have made it possible for anyone to become the Martha Stewart of their own home. Whether or not you consider yourself creative, with the help of online resources, you too can become crafty. All it takes is a few how-to articles or videos. With instructions available and art supplies more accessible, it is becoming easier and easier to throw a picture perfect party, to scrapbook your child’s life, or to deliver a beautiful hand-made card.

Although resources and idea generation have simplified, there is still one roadblock – time! You may not have to take time to dream up a design concept or to drive to another city for supplies, but our lack of precious time still makes it easier to buy an overpriced and impersonal greeting card. There are, however, a few things you can do to make time for crafts. 1) Create a Dedicated Craft Space in Your Home Craft rooms are growing in popularity. More and more homeowners are taking on DIY projects, and having a dedicated space to work makes each project more enjoyable. With the help of a craft room, all of your materials can be neatly organized and accessible right where you need them. Create a workspace that is free from clutter and is large enough to wrap gifts, to sew, and to lay out all of your materials. If you incorporate a craft room into a renovation or home build, Centennial 360 suggests custom cabinetry that is designed for your 48

Centennial 360

crafting needs. Pull-out drawers and properly sized storage space are a crafters best friend! Above all, the best part about having a craft room is leaving your work in progress behind closed doors. When you have a few spare minutes, you can pick up where you left off, rather than taking time to set up and clean up each time you work on your project. 2) Purchase the Right Tools Everything gets easier and more efficient when you have the right tools for the job. Some inexpensive must-haves are a paper cutter and scorer, a swivel knife, specialty hole punchers, and, the most helpful item, glue tape from the closest dollar store. These items are essential for adult cutting and pasting! If you are willing to invest a little in your crafting, a Cricut machine and a Creative Station sticker maker will revolutionize your crafting abilities. A Cricut machine cuts shapes and letters out of

GETTINGCRAFTY paper and a Creative Station adds an adhesive backing to your cut-outs. No more cutting and gluing intricate pieces by hand! 3) Collect Easy and Eye Catching Project Ideas Sometimes fancy decorations or complex looking greeting cards are easier to make than you think. With the right instructions and the proper materials, many craft projects are as easy as one, two, three. Select crafts that require little prep work while still making a major impact. It is easy to get caught up in little complicated details that can eat up

your time. Keep it simple. Lots of the most effective party decorations are the simplest to make. Keep materials for these kinds of projects on hand so you can quickly whip up decorations for last minute hosting, or make the perfect card for the birthday party you forgot you had committed to. Although we all want to appear as though we are completely on top of things, reality is we all need a little help sometimes. Having some easy tools in the back pocket helps. And then, sometimes it is still simply best to just go out and buy a card.

HOW TO

“Building a charcuterie board is easier than you think. The main goal is variety in cheese, textures, colours, and flavours. A beautiful display must have colour to make it pop and inviting. The variety of cheese allows guests to enjoy their favourites while adventuring into new unknown flavours. A traditional charcuterie will showcase each a soft, hard, and aged cheese, as well as a brie and a wash rind cheddar. You should accompany cheese with jams, chutneys, fresh fruit, and honey. Of course you can use any flavour combinations to suit your palate. For the meat, I suggest using prosciutto, salami, smoked duck, smoked trout, and pâtés. Pickles, olives, and marinated artichoke hearts add a nice balance, as the brine and slight saltiness accompanies the buttery richness of cheese and meat. When displaying the charcuterie board, keep in mind height and balance. The height of the meat and cheese should vary. Fold the prosciutto and salamis for a full and attractive look. Slice up half the amount of cheese into bite size pieces, while leaving the rest of the cheese whole to create an eye catching display. In the end I believe that less is more. The last task is to choose your favourite wine. Chances are, what you enjoy will go fantastically with your charcuterie board. ” – Megan Toews, Ingredients

Centennial 360 Journeyman Plumber, Paul Trimble, Checking Shut-offs in a Centennial 360 Custom Home

I

f you’re like me, living in Saskatoon, you take water for granted. Without even thinking about it, we flush the toilet, turn on the bathroom faucet to brush our teeth, shower, boil pasta, run the dishwasher, do laundry, make ice, water our lawns, bathe the kids and the dog, have water fights, make coffee, and even drink refreshing water right from the tap. Simply turn on one of the many faucets in or outside your house, and fresh, clean, piping-hot, or perfectly refreshing water flows, without much consideration - all in return for (in comparison to other utilities) a fairly reasonable monthly water bill. It isn’t until we have a problem with our water that we typically think about it. In my case, this recent problem was a one thousand dollar water bill. I racked my brain for a logical reason for a water bill that was more than five times our usual bill. We hadn’t had houseguests, added any new appliances, nor put in an Olympic sized swimming pool. I couldn’t come up with anything. 56

Centennial 360

I called the City of Saskatoon to report their obvious mix-up. I was informed that, yes, our household had consumed a trillion gallons of water. And, yes, our bill was actually $1,000. And yes, I’d really have to pay it. (On the plus side, the very kind-hearted woman on the line allowed me to spread the payments over a few months). In order to ensure that I didn’t EVER have another outrageous water bill, I went on a rampage to locate the source(s) of the exorbitant water usage, and learn some things I could do to prevent wasting so much water again! It turns out we had a leaking toilet and a leaking underground sprinkler. Here’s what I could have done (and what you should do) to prevent the waste of so much water: Fix Any Visible Leaks ASAP. This one seems like a nobrainer, but I get it - sometimes household repairs are not at the top of your to-do list. But this one should be! Not only is the sound of water dripping terribly annoying, a leaky faucet that drips at the rate of one drip per second can waste more than 3,000 gallons of water per year, and a showerhead

H2OH? leaking at 10 drips per minute wastes more than 500 gallons per year. Do a Monthly Meter Read. Most residential water meters are billed monthly, but are only read on a quarterly basis. This means that the majority of your bills are just estimates, based on your account history. By doing your own regular meter reads, you can monitor your actual water consumption and prevent having to wait up to three months to realize you have used WAY more water than usual. Check for Hidden Water Leaks. It’s a good idea to check for hidden water leaks on a regular basis (before you get a $1,000 water bill). In order to do so, turn off all appliances that consume water. Locate your water meter (it is usually in your furnace room). If the little red or white triangle is spinning, even very slowly, it means that water is passing through the meter and you have a leak. Apparently, my leaks are not unique! According to the City of Saskatoon’s Website, leaky toilets are the cause of most high water use bills. Do a Colour Test on Your Toilets. Toilet leaks often go unnoticed because, unlike an annoying leaky faucet or showerhead, they cannot be seen or heard. In order to check for a toilet leak, Centennial 360’s journeyman plumber, Paul Trimble, recommends putting a few drops of food colouring in the back of the toilet tank. After waiting ten minutes, if the colour shows up in the toilet bowl without flushing the toilet, you have a leak. Make sure to flush the toilet following the experiment to avoid staining the tank. Outdoor leaks are also a huge water waster! The main culprit of outdoor leaks is underground sprinkler systems. Check for Outdoor Leaks at the Beginning of Sprinkler Season and Throughout the Summer. After our long winters, nothing is more exciting than turning on your outside water. However, before using your underground sprinklers in the spring, check each zone. Look for broken sprinkler heads and listen for bubbling water. Throughout the summer, look for unusual wet spots and pooling. Another great piece of advice I got from Paul Trimble is to disconnect water hoses when not in use because there’s a greater chance a leak may go unnoticed and cause unnecessary water use. So there you have it - lots of great practical advice to prevent a major water mishap like mine! If you

do find a leak, it is best to take care of it right away. If your leak is too much for you to handle on your own, it is a good idea to call a plumber and avoid a $1,000 water bill! To make amends for our colossal waste of water, my family and I have attempted to reduce our daily water usage. Here are some great suggestions from the City of Saskatoon website for all of us to reduce the amount of water we use in our homes: 99 Install low-flow fixtures, such as high-efficiency shower heads and low-flush toilets. 99 Shorten your shower time and reduce the level of water when bathing. 99 Reduce your number of laundry loads and only run full loads. 99 Fix leaks as soon as you notice them. Fixing leaks could save you about 10 percent on your water bill. 99 Wash your car at the car wash. Washing your car at home with a hose for 10 minutes uses 300 litres of water and sends soap, oil, and other chemicals to the river through our storm drains. At a car wash, run-off is captured and disposed of properly. If you do wash your car at home, use a bucket of soapy water and use a nozzle to stop the flow of water from the hose between rinses. 99 Use a broom when cleaning your driveway or walkway instead of a hose. This will save approximately 200 litres of water. 99 Know where your master water shut-off valve is located in case of emergency. www.saskatoon.ca/services-residents/power-water/ conservation/be-water-wise

Did You Know?

Even slow water leaks can add up very quickly. A drippy faucet or a leaky toilet can waste tens of thousands of gallons of water in a three month period (the time between estimated bills and an actual meter read). That’s enough water to fill a swimming pool! centennial360.com
