From the President
You can “feel at home” in a house or not “feel at home” in a house. Some of the things that might make you not “feel at home” in your house are physical. If your house compromises your health, safety, or comfort, you will not “feel at home” in your house. At Centennial 360 we can certainly tend to your health, safety and comfort needs with our plumbing, heating, cooling, and electrical service and installation department. However, that might not be enough.
THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME – CENTENNIAL 360 What is the difference between a house and a home? A house is usually thought of as a building, whereas a home is a place where people live. The word “home” has more emotional associations than the word “house”. There are many famous song lyrics that exemplify this, such as: Country h roads, take me home, to the place I belong . . . Just h know you’re not alone ‘cause I’m gonna make this place your home . . . or myhfavourite, from Simon & Garfunkel’s Homeward Bound, …Home h where my thoughts escaping, Home where my music’s playing, Home where my love lies waiting silently for me. h
The flow and atmosphere of your house also play an important role in your ability to truly enjoy your space. Are you always tripping over other family members? Do you dislike being in certain rooms? Is there an area of your house that you wish was different? The good news is that Centennial 360 is also an award winning home renovation company. We can remodel your bathroom, kitchen or any room in your house, or even add to your house, in order to make you “feel at home” in your home. Please enjoy this edition of LOOK 360, which I hope inspires you to visit us at centennial360.com or in person at 710 – 51st Street East, Saskatoon. Arnie L. Shaw President – CENTENNIAL 360

Editor’s Letter “Today you are you, that’s truer than true. There is no one alive more youer than you.” – Dr. Seuss
THE ESSENTIAL
360 5 DAYS | $9995 1 AWESOME BATHROOM RENOVATION
In this children’s book quote, Dr. Seuss reminds us of a simple truth that is so easily forgotten - no one can be a better version of you than you! You were created to be you, and you are the only you who exists. This issue of Look 360 is all about confidence and embracing who you are. Confidence is displayed in external things like your job, your clothing, or your home, but confidence comes from an internal realization that you were created to be awesome - and that you are! At Centennial 360, it is our goal to help you make life awesome by providing a living space that is perfect for your family. We want you to be confident about the health, safety, comfort, and beauty of your home. A house only becomes a home when you add people. People give a house character and bring it to life. Home is a place where your family grows, and as you grow, each day you become a little more you. As you read our fourth edition of Look 360, I hope you are reminded to love who you are, right where you’re at, and spread that love to others too. By loving others for who they are, you will help build confidence in their lives, and receive fulfillment in your own. You were created with a purpose no one else can fulfill, because, after all, “no one alive is more youer than you!” Be You, Be True, & Be Awesome. Charmaine Elmgren Look 360 Editor

ow many do-it-yourself home dĂŠcor projects do you have pinned on Pinterest? How many design photos have you added to your Ideabooks on Houzz? Social media, and technology in general, are game changers in the world of design. If you have ever felt overwhelmed at the idea of coming up with a design concept of your own, you can now browse thousands of ideas at the touch of a button. You can see your renovation or new home through 3D colour renderings before you even commit to a project, to make sure you are going to love the place you are investing in. We have never had so much opportunity for design, and yet, also so many ideas to sort through. Being overwhelmed by a lack of ideas has been replaced with being overwhelmed with too many
ideas. But it’s worth the trade! For those of you who had difficulty articulating your design style to a home designer or interior decorator, you can now explain your preferences through a pictorial storyboard on social media. The best part is that your ideas can be gathered over many years and organized all in one place. The online world can house your endless ideas and help you sort through your design confusion. Once you have all your ideas documented and you have made the decision to take action, it’s time to define your design style. To discover your style, designers at Centennial 360 look for patterns and themes in your Houzz Ideabooks and your verbal descriptions. If you are having trouble noticing your own patterns, have a friend with fresh eyes take a look, or talk with a professional

DESIGNSOCIALIZED designer. Your home is an investment, and it is the place you spend the majority of your life, so take the time to get it right, and make it a place you love to be. After you have picked your style, you can narrow down your Ideabooks and start looking for specific elements you love. If you are doing a major project, like a renovation or build, keep functionality in mind. What might look pretty on screen might not work in reality, and what might work for one family might not work for yours. Think about your family’s lifestyle and share your family’s needs with your designer. You should never have to compromise functionality for design, so talking to a professional designer can help you find the perfect solution.
Social media and HGTV design ideas are available whenever you want them. Whether you love design or it is just something you have to do to complete a project, you will have all the help you need. But don’t forget to lift your eyes up from your phone and recognize the design ideas that are all around you. Saskatoon is filled with beautiful homes of all different styles just waiting to inspire you.
What if you haven’t quite embraced all of this new technology? If you only have a few pins on Pinterest and you don’t even know what Houzz is, don’t worry – traditional ways still work. Think about which of your friends’ houses you love and why you love them. You will start to see patterns here too. Take pictures, ask questions, and let someone else create the visuals for you.

Given the time you spend in this room, hopefully your bathroom is a place of comfort and relaxation. Over the years, Centennial 360 has seen bathrooms evolve to become more technologically advanced, more spacious, and more convenient. TIES A whole home renovation was all about building family ties for David & Terrie Kostur

FAMILYTIES
W
hen David and Terrie Kostur moved to Saskatoon six years ago, they were on a search to find the perfect home to fit their active family. It didn’t take them long to fall in love with a house in Silverwood with a triple roof line and a large yard backing the golf course. The house was in a great location and David and Terrie had no trouble imagining the projects they could tackle to make this their dream home. “We liked the North end and we were always looking for space big enough to meet our family’s lifestyle,” explains Terrie. “This house had a wood burning fireplace, and it backed onto the golf course giving it privacy and a unique design. It felt like home, and it had the potential to make it our own,” she adds. With four teenage kids in tow (Kristen, Darrin, Brianne, and Meghan), David and Terrie moved to Saskatoon and into their new home. Their first mission was to add a bedroom by developing their basement. Next on the list was landscaping the backyard and adding an outdoor kitchen. After the initial projects were complete, it was time to really make it their own by doing a large scale renovation to the entire main floor. “We wanted to do the main floor from the beginning, but adding that bedroom downstairs had to be top priority,” David explains. With the main floor project in the back of their minds since they bought the house, David and Terrie had plenty of time to think of

ideas. After years discussing layout options, David and Terrie finally found a concept they loved from a Centennial 360 renovation featured in a previous issue of LOOK 360 magazine. The Lakeview kitchen was open, spacious, bright, and exactly what David and Terrie were imagining. In spring of 2014 the renovation began, and David and Terrie were on their way to having their dream home. “We wanted a big island with a gas range top and double oven. I wanted a big sink to fit pots, and just lots of space for cooking and baking,” explains Terrie. One thing is for certain, Terrie loves to bake. Careful thought was put into each cabinet to make it as convenient as possible. A Kitchen-Aid lift was essential, along with a variety of spice racks and pull out shelving. Additional cabinets and a second fridge were incorporated into the laundry room for extra baking storage. David and Terrie love to host parties, so it was imperative to not only have extra space for storage, but also for people. In order to open up the kitchen, the dining room wall was removed and the kitchen cabinets were moved off the exterior wall. Four large windows were added and four were enlarged spanning across both the kitchen and family room, making the space brighter and more inviting. The effect the windows had was the best surprise of the renovations for David and Terrie. “The windows
FAMILYTIES in the living room make it feel bigger, and we don’t need curtains because there is nothing behind us,” explains Terrie. “The house just flows so much better from the living room, to the dining room, to the kitchen, and family room,” David expresses. The kitchen, dining area, and family room were just part of the renovation. On the front end of the house, David and Terrie also tackled the front entrance, living room, powder room, and laundry room. The entryway and living room were spacious, but outdated with old oak doors and thick frostinglike stipple on the ceiling. “To keep some character and, yet, modernize the home, we decided to treat and stain the solid oak doors and banister instead of replacing them,” says David. The ceiling was scraped, floors and trim replaced, and walls painted to give the entryway a fresh new look. One of the most underutilized spaces in the house pre-renovation was the laundry room. It was crowded and dull, even though it was a large room. White Columbia Cabinets, new appliances, a built in laundry sink, quartz countertops, and an East facing window were added to open up the space and make it both bright and functional. The laundry room can now couple as a butler pantry during their frequent family gatherings, and it is an enjoyable place to be. Each room in the Kostur home has a touch of family, including the powder room. The main floor bathroom is a small, basic room in most homes, but David and Terrie added a sentimental touch to make it one of the main features of the house. Terrie conceptualized a vanity made from her mother’s antique Singer sewing table. Terrie selected a hand-hammered recycled copper sink to replace the sewing machine, and the Centennial 360 renovation team turned her vision into a functional vanity that is a statement piece in their home. There is no doubt that the Kostur’s home is all about family. They have a love for life and their laughter is ceaseless. David and Terri’s renovation received the Saskatoon and Region Home Builders’ Association Bridges Award for Whole Home Renovation of the Year, but the true success was creating a space that ties their family even closer together. What was once a one person kitchen has turned into a gathering place for their family and friends. Terrie expands, “I find we can communicate better as a family. It feels like we are all in one space now and there is just so much more interaction with each other.” centennial360.com

Artistic Flare

O
nce the construction phase of your renovation or new build is complete, the most exciting, and to some the most daunting, part of the project begins – decorating! There are endless options of furniture, fabrics, and décor pieces to choose from, but what really makes a room feel complete is filling the empty walls. Whether you recognize it or not, everyone has an artistic flare. Your artwork selections make a statement in your home about your style and personality. Your home is an expression of you, and so too should be your art. Rookie and professional artists alike may debate the rules for selecting the perfect artwork, but
according to Wanda and Claire Underhill of Rouge Gallery in Saskatoon, there are no rules set in stone. “Some people buy art to match their home. Others are ‘Love Buyers’ who simply choose whatever art pieces they love, regardless of existing décor,” explains Claire. Art is an investment, so buy what you love. If you aren’t sure what you love, start browsing. Go to galleries and art stores. Look online. Take note of pieces you like. You will start to see a pattern in your style. And no, you do not have to pick just one style of art. “You can certainly display different artists, different textures, and different mediums all in one room. However, it is helpful to create a flow of your artwork by choosing one common denominator like colour, for example,”
How to Hang Your Art
1
Walk into Your Art
2
Hang It Where You Love It
3
Artwork should be hung at eye level for an average height person.
The drop size is the length from the top of your art to the bottom of the hanging wire. This varies from piece to piece, even from the same collection. Measuring your drop size prevents adjacent art from hanging unevenly.
You don’t have to hang your art in the middle of the wall. Hang it where you love it the most in the room.

ARTISTICFLARE explains Wanda. If you’re unsure whether a piece will fit your flow or detract from it, take it home to try it on for size. “We encourage our clients to take pieces home to see if they love it in their space. A piece can look so different on each wall. To help eliminate transportation, clients of Rouge Gallery can send us a photo of their room, and we can Photoshop the art piece into it so you can see what it looks like before taking it home,” says Wanda. Purchasing art can become a hobby and it is an investment for your family. Choose pieces you will love for years and that you may even pass down to your children one day. Wanda and Claire suggest reinventing your art by rotating it around your house. “A piece can have a whole new look or feel in a different room,” says Claire. Adding or changing a frame or matting can also change the style of your art. Small adjustments to a piece can keep it fresh and timeless as your tastes change. Wherever your comfort level with art is at, embrace your artistic flare and you will gradually create a decorative flow that is the perfect fit for you and your home.

hat would your dream home look like? Would it be traditional, transitional, or contemporary? What area of the city would you choose, or would you prefer life on an acreage? Would it be big or small, short or tall? Whatever your dream style is, it should be perfect for you and your family. With the increase of infill homes being built in Saskatoon, the options for style and location are almost endless. Centennial 360 has built a variety of styles of custom houses on infill lots over the last five years. These houses have quickly turned into homes for families who have finally found their perfect place to live. In 2015, Centennial 360 completed a custom build on 15th Street in Saskatoon. The house did not even make it onto the market before inquiries about it came flooding in. The transitional style home features a Tyndall stone exterior, emulating buildings on the University of Saskatchewan campus only a few blocks away. Its large windows and classic style grabbed the attention of many passersby, and it sold before the doors even opened as a show home. Being the highest valued Saskatoon home listed on MLS at the time, the house on 15th received a lot of attention. Given its popularity and quick sale, show home hours were limited, and so we put together a photo tour for you instead. The large tiled entryway passes by a stunning dining room with a coffered ceiling and a bright office space with built-in shelving. As you enter further into the house, 10 foot windows flood the living room and kitchen with natural light. The kitchen features Columbia
36 36 Centennial Centennial360 360
Cabinets with convenient storage solutions. And tucked in the corner of the kitchen is the crowd favourite butler pantry, acting as a second entry to the dining room. A large mud room completes the back of the house with a stone path leading out to the detached garage. The house on 15th was built for families. The upper floor has Jack and Jill bedrooms connected by a spacious bathroom. And when the parents need a little escape, the master bedroom is the perfect retreat. Large South facing windows fill the room with sunlight. The ensuite features a freestanding tub, custom tiled shower, and a dual sink vanity. A beautiful master bedroom wouldn’t be complete without a dressing room filled with mirrors and custom cabinets. Heading down to the basement, guests are greeted with a lit temperature controlled wine cellar and basement bar. The large recreation room lends itself to a perfect entertainment spot. And when the party is over, you can burn off some steam in the home gym, complete with rubber tile flooring and a mirrored wall. For guests who don’t make it home after the party, there is a private bedroom and guest suite with all the amenities one could hope for. Does this home sound like the perfect space for your family? Or do you prefer a developing neighbourhood with an urban rustic feel? No matter what style you love, don’t compromise on the home that fits your lifestyle. Build a home that is a perfect place for your family to gather, and make memories to last a lifetime.

onfidence starts in the closet. Or at least it can, according to Saskatoon stylist and personal shopper, Hannah Frey. Hannah is on a mission to help people build self-esteem through the items in their closets. “My goal is to help people achieve their goals and boost their confidence,” expresses Hannah. The closet can be a place full of insecurities, and choosing an outfit can be an overwhelming process. With a well designed closet space and an organized wardrobe, anyone can transform their closet into a place of confidence. One of the first steps to revitalizing your closet is getting rid of old, unused items. “Purging feels so good even though it is hard. Once we have slimmed down your wardrobe, you can learn how to create different looks with the pieces you have,” explains Hannah. As a stylist, Hannah walks her clients through this process and takes photos of the outfits you created together to help eliminate stressful morning decision making. Restructuring and reorganizing your closet can go a long way. And if reorganizing isn’t enough, you can always rebuild. Centennial 360 renovates closet spaces to make them more functional and more organized. Having a well structured space is essential for easy wardrobe selections. Adding proper shelving, cabinets, hooks, shoe racks, counter space, and hanging rods help keep your closet organized. Good mirrors are essential for putting together your outfit and helping you feel confident. Whatever your reason for rebuilding your wardrobe, Hannah believes that creating your style should be fun and easy on anyone’s budget. “Whether it’s a Dad who is recently single, a Mom who is going back to work for the first time in years, or a young professional figuring out her style, the closet is a starting place for rebuilding confidence and making a difference in your life!”

E L K R A P S Q&A with Hillberg & Berk Founder, Rachel Mielke
Q&A:HILLBERG&BERK C360 - How can jewellery help women build confidence? Rachel - We believe that how you look has a huge impact on how you feel. When you own pieces that are high quality, thoughtfully designed, and, best of all, made in Canada, you are investing in long term wardrobe items. This is what we offer at Hillberg & Berk - pieces that are a lifetime investment. Nothing changes your attitude like putting on a beautiful new piece of jewellery. C360 - How has helping other women build their self-confidence changed your life?
I
n 2007, Saskatchewan based designer, Rachel Mielke, founded Hillberg & Berk, an artisan jewellery line. It was Rachel’s vision to use jewellery to build confidence in women and empower them to change the world. After a pitch on Dragon’s Den, Rachel secured a partnership with W. Brett Wilson to grow her line into one of the most successful jewellery brands in Canada. Since then, Hillberg & Berk jewellery has been worn by celebrities like Carrie Underwood, Sarah McLachlan, Michelle Obama, Barbara Walters, Celine Dion, and even Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Throughout her success Rachel has remained focused on her philosophy that every woman should possess self-confidence, by actively supporting charities and organizations that empower women and build better communities. At Centennial 360, we also believe in the mission of Hillberg & Berk, so we got in touch with Rachel to learn a little more about how just a little sparkle can add a lot of confidence to your life. C360 - Tell us about your philosophy on building confidence in women. Rachel - We believe that empowering women will change the world. That philosophy spills into everything that we do - from our culture at Hillberg & Berk, to the causes our company supports through the Hillberg & Berk Foundation, to our design process.
Rachel - I have always felt as though it’s my life calling to run a socially conscious company that supports and empowers women, but to have seen Hillberg & Berk grow so quickly and to see the far reaching impact that our brand is having in Canada is truly humbling and overwhelming. I feel so thankful every day for the opportunity to run this company and lead the amazing team of women at Hilllberg & Berk. C360 - What are the key pieces that every woman should have in her jewellery wardrobe? Rachel - I think every woman needs a pair of sparkle ball earrings. These are the perfect earrings for a busy woman, as they take you seamlessly from one life activity to the next. Every woman also needs at least one everyday piece of jewellery, like a great ring or delicate necklace than can be layered with other pieces. One of my favourite everyday pieces from the Fall collection is the Athena Necklace. Finally, you need one piece that makes you feel unstoppable. Each season I choose my “power necklace” from our collection, and that is the piece I will wear all season to important presentations, meetings, or events. C360 - What are some tips on selecting jewellery? Rachel - I often see women get very excited about a particular piece, but instead choose to purchase something much more simple. I like to encourage women to go with their initial instinct on what they are attracted to. Jewellery is art you wear, so it’s no different than selecting a piece of art for your home. Choose something you truly love, and then don’t be afraid to wear it all the time. Also, don’t be afraid of rules because there are no rule when it comes to accessorizing. I love to wear diamonds during the day and my sparkliest piece to the office. If it feels good, do it! centennial360.com

ne of the most important functions of your home is to have a space to share life with others. Your home should be a welcoming place you are proud to show to family and friends. The basement of a home is a popular area for entertaining guests, and when you are hosting you don’t want to miss a minute of the fun. A basement bar allows you to serve your guests without missing a beat. Due to client requests, Centennial 360 is now including a basement bar in almost every basement renovation or development. The convenience of a fully functioning bar in the basement has become a necessity. Many basement bars include space for a full-sized fridge to accommodate a wide variety of drinks. With the availability of traditional and craft beers, you may need an entire fridge just for your lager and ale selections! Chris Cole from Ingredients Artisan Market in Saskatoon recommends having an assortment of

beers on hand to fit the time of year, as well as your crowd. “Your beer fridge should change with the seasons, while maintaining your classic favourites. It’s always good to have some non-traditional flavours and styles to spark good conversation,” explains Chris. Our distinct Saskatchewan seasons can help guide your assortment selections. “In the colder months, opt for something darker and heavier. Beers that are bourbon-barrel aged or made with toasted nuts have a warmer and more inviting feel to them. When the weather is warmer, stock up on cerveza, India pale ale (IPA), wit beer, or lambic beer. These are light and refreshing with citrus and fruit flavours,” Chris recommends. Not sure where to start? Head down to Ingredients on 2nd Ave for craft beer tastings every Friday from 3:00 - 6:00 pm. Build your basement bar, fill your fridge with your favourite beer selections, and your home will become your friends’ number one brew house.

Happy For Appies

hen it comes to entertaining guests in your home, there are two things you want to accomplish: keep your guests happy and still have time to socialize with them. It’s a juggling act that few master, but according to chef, Daniel Petros, from PickNic’s Catering and Fine Foods, there are a few tricks that will help you become a seamless host. Tip #1 – Plan Ahead. “Do as much preparation as you can in advance,” says Daniel. Chill appetizers on baking sheets so you can easily pop them into the oven during the party. The more prep you do beforehand, the more time you will have with your guests. Tip #2 – Keep it Simple. “Make things within your abilities and experience. It is best to work within your comfort zone,“ Daniel explains. Creating new culinary masterpieces should only be done for close friends and family, when you don’t have the pressure of entertaining. Stick to what you are good at to eliminate stress and wasted time. And when you do master that fancy Pinterest appetizer, you can add it into your party menu. Tip #3 – Get a Little Help From Your Friends. “One more set of hands makes all the difference,” 48

Tip #4 – Make Lists. “Make menu lists. Make grocery lists. Make preparation lists. This will keep you organized and save many unnecessary trips back to the grocery store,” says Daniel. Let’s face it – as much as we want to believe we will remember every detail, chances are we will forget a thing or two. Do yourself a favour and make a few cheat notes. There are many things you can do to help make entertaining a piece of cake, and there are also some things your home can do to help out. Centennial 360 has seen increasing interest in butler pantries from clients who love to entertain. A butler pantry is a small room off the kitchen that often includes extra counter space for preparation, a second fridge for storage, as well as a prep sink and dishwasher for easy cleanup. The butler pantry is a host’s best friend and best kept secret during a busy night of entertaining. “A butler pantry makes it easy to assemble and execute at the point of service,” says Daniel. are available. “There are a lot of advancements in home products that not only make life a little easier for homeowners, but also add safety and security,” says Paul. One of the newest products that has quickly become the talk of the trades is the Honeywell Lyric thermostat. Not only does it look futuristic, but it also functions in ways beyond what the average homeowner could imagine. The Lyric syncs to your smart phone so you can control temperatures via wifi from anywhere in the world. If you are skipping the dreaded Saskatchewan February this year and heading to Phoenix, you can be rest assured that the Lyric thermostat will help keep your home safe. If the temperature or humidity drops below a certain level, you will be alerted on your phone and the Lyric can even be set to contact your local home service provider. Most insurance policies require you to have someone check on your home every 24 hours if you are leaving your house vacant for an extended period of time in the winter. However, if you have a low temperature sensor in your home security system or a thermostat like the Lyric that will send alerts when temperatures drop, that is sufficient for insurance purposes.
“My Smart Pick is the Moen ioDIGITAL Shower Control. This system allows you to create four separate pre-sets in your shower for temperature and pressure control. An LED light flashes until the water has reached your desired settings and the shower can be turned on or off using a remote control from up to thirty feet away. As a father, this would be a handy tool to ensure the bath water is a safe and consistent temperature for my young children.”
If you’re not one of the fortunate ones who can skip the bitter winter, there are still multiple benefits of the Lyric. The thermostat features Geo-fencing Proper Humidification is Important in Homes with Hardwood Floors Like This Centennial 360 Custom Home

ccording to Health Canada, Canadians spend close to 90% of their time indoors. Whether you spend your time at home, at work, or at a recreational facility, the reality is that as Canadians, we do not get enough fresh air. Unless there is a strong odor or smog, we can’t see air, smell air, hear air, or taste air. As a result, we often don’t think about it. Most of the time we are oblivious to the air we breathe, and yet it is essential to our living. Each breath we take is an involuntary response that most of us don’t think about on a regular basis. However, since our life depends on it, our indoor air quality (IAQ) is something we should be aware of more often than just when our senses alert us that something is wrong. As homes are becoming more technologically advanced, they are getting more and more air tight. Insulation is better, windows are less leaky, and seals are tighter. Although this brings down energy bills and regulates temperatures, these air tight solutions prevent fresh air from entering our homes and recycled air from leaving. As a result, a focus on your IAQ has never been so important. 56
Centennial 360
Centennial 360 home consultant, Paige Falk, suggests that there are three types of IAQ that homeowners should consider when assessing their home – filtration, ventilation, and humidification. “IAQ is the overall quality of the air in your home. This is the air we are breathing and exposing our skin to for most of our day, so it is important to assess your air conditions to make sure you have a safe, healthy, and comfortable home,” says Paige. “The filtration, ventilation, and humidification of your home are the three things I look at when assessing your indoor air quality. One or all three of these areas may be negatively affecting your health without you realizing it,” Paige adds. Filtration is one of the most basic things in your home that can significantly affect your air quality. By simply changing your furnace filter every three months, you are removing unwanted particles from your air. “Have you ever noticed how often you are having to dust off that coffee table of yours? That dust comes from particles within the air settling on your furniture. Filtration reduces the particles in the air, resulting in less dusting and cleaner air for
IAQFORYOU breathing,“ explains Paige. If you have pets in your home, are doing a renovation, or have lots of activity in your home, you may need to replace your filter more often. Changing your filter regularly also reduces the workload on your furnace, giving it a longer life as well. And don’t forget to change your filter in the summer months! Your vents still push air through the furnace filter when you aren’t heating your home. The second area of IAQ is ventilation. Ventilation is the exchange of air within your home. This is what our perfectly air tight homes are preventing, but there is a solution. Heat recovery ventilators (HRV) completely replace all of the air in your home every hour to keep things fresh and clean. As the old air passes through the HRV, the heat is extracted and used to warm the new air coming in. As a result, temperatures are regulated at the same time. HRVs are standard in most new homes today and should be considered for all homes. The recycled air in our homes is affected by our own breathing, and also by gasses given off by products in our home. “Our homes give off VOC gasses that affect our air. Have you ever bought a leather couch and experienced the ‘new’ smell for weeks or even months? That smell is coming from gasses emitted from the couch. There are all kinds of products in our homes that give off gasses, making it even more important to focus on our ventilation options,” Paige explains.
tips
Bath fans also play a role in your home’s ventilation. A bath fan cycles air out of the room so it can be replaced with fresh air. Bath fans can now be tied into the HRV, removing the need for outside vents on your home. Replacing your bath fans may be more expensive than installing an HRV, so talk to your home consultant about all of your options. The third area of IAQ is humidification. Being in Saskatchewan, it is likely your home is lacking humidity. This can result in itchy skin, staticy hair, or nose bleeds. “Our bodies are mainly made up of water, so, just as it is important for us to drink water, it is also important for there to be humidity in our air,” says Paige. Like us, products in our home also need water to remain healthy. Hardwood floors or wood cabinets may crack and instruments will not stay tuned if the home’s humidity is too low. On the other hand, if humidity is too high in the home, mould can develop. The good news is that an HRV will also detect if humidity levels are too high and it will remove the excess moisture from the air. How do you know if your indoor air quality needs improvement? Check if you have any of the symptoms listed below. If you think one of those may apply to you, or if you aren’t sure, have a Centennial 360 home consultant come assess your IAQ. You may simply need to change a furnace filter to give your family healthier and safer air to breathe.

Filter Facts
Ever heard of a MERV rating? A MERV rating on a furnace filter determines the size of particles that can flow through your filter. MERV ratings range from 1-16, 16 being the most restrictive. The ideal MERV rating for 1” filters in a home is between 6 and 8. Filters with a rating lower than that will cause your home to be dustier. Filters with a rating higher than that will cause your furnace to work too hard. However, a higher MERV rating can help with allergies and asthma. In fact, hospitals use a MERV 16 filter. Whatever size you use, don’t forget to change your filter at least every 3 months. And those are the facts! centennial360.com
