we even build beautiful custom homes. It seems a lot has changed, but it really hasn’t. Our focus on pairing quality products with great service is still our entire business.

We have so much to celebrate! Over the next year, all Canadians will be celebrating our country’s sesquicentennial, the Stanley Cup’s quasquicentennial, Centennial 360’s semicentennial, and, most importantly, the quadranscentennial of the Toronto Blue Jays first World Series victory. It makes us think about the past and the incredible commitment that it takes to create these traditions, and especially to keep them alive for so long. Well, maybe not totally alive as it relates to the Blue Jays, but nevermind, the nostalgia remains. At Centennial 360, our tradition was created in 1967, when Elvin Nelson, a journeyman plumber, realized that there was a need for a plumbing retail store that would pair quality product with great service and advice. Over the last 50 years, a lot seems to have changed; we’ve turned our retail store into Saskatoon’s premiere kitchen and bath showroom, we’ve added plumbing, heating and electrical in-home services, we’ve become one of Saskatoon’s largest home renovators, and

enovating. What words do you associate with renovating? Excitement? Adventure? Expensive? Nightmare? Daunting? Disruptive? Messy? Unless you fall into the excitement or adventure category, it’s likely that you are prone to Renovation Hesitation, and with good reason! Perhaps you have been through this before – contractor after contractor cancelling or showing up late. Washing your dishes in a bathtub for over a month. Dust, dust, and more dust. Costs that were hidden so deep even Sherlock Holmes wouldn’t have found them. Whatever is causing your Renovation Hesitation, it is a real feeling, and it is common. Renovation clients may be the most skeptical people out there, but with the right team and the right process, anyone can go from overwhelmed to excited.

Step 2: Do a Little Homework Once you have your thoughts clarified, you can start looking for examples of your vision and the people to do the work. Go on Houzz.com and search through thousands of idea books to find examples of what you love. Take pictures of your friends’ houses and elements you want incorporated into your design. Play around in your current space and make notes about what you already like and what causes you inconvenience or frustration on a regular basis.

Step 1: Meet with Someone Experienced The first step to getting over Renovation Hesitation is to meet with someone experienced. Centennial 360 in Saskatoon has been doing renovations for over ten years and has designers who walk clients through the process hand-in-hand, step-by-step. Book a consultation with a designer to talk about your ideas. Think of it as a design counselling session. You can talk through what your likes and dislikes are, what you need, and what you want. You may not already have ideas in mind, but a designer will help clarify all your thoughts into a clear vision.

Of course, if this doesn’t make things easier for you, or if you simply don’t have time for research, you can always leave all of this up to your designer. If you have an experienced designer, you can feel confident leaving this in his or her capable hands.

The next source for research is your friends. What did they do when they renovated? What do they love or hate in their homes? Try having a baking day in your friend’s kitchen and see what you prefer in their space over yours.

Step 3: Play Around with Virtual Renderings You don’t need to commit to renovating before you see your space. Move, adjust, and play with 3D colour renderings to ensure you are getting what you want. Playing around with a virtual design is much easier than playing around with the finished product!

RENOVATIONHESITATION Step 4: Choose a Contractor This is quite possibly the most crucial decision of the entire renovation process. You can choose one contractor who will take care of the entire process, or you can be your own contractor and hire out all of the trades. If you went in with Renovation Hesitation, it is a good idea to hire a contractor who will take care of the entire process, start to finish. The number one thing to look for is reliability. Has this contractor been around for a while? What do their clients say about them? What is their warranty? Do they use subtrades? What is their reputation in the community? Will they be around for years to come and protect your investment? These are all questions Centennial 360 recommends asking when considering a contractor. When Centennial 360 created their renovation division, these are some of the questions they wanted to clarify for homeowners to give people peace of mind. “Our renovation process is done in one place and with one team,” explains Centennial 360’s Leader of Renovations, Bob Pederson. “Our designers walk clients through the process and we have a renovation coordinator who takes care of all the product ordering, deliveries, and trade schedules. Our in-house renovation team takes care of all the work, and we back it with a two year protection plan.” This 360 approach, or a similar renovation process, is one way of combating Renovation Hesitation. Interview your contractor and find out exactly what to expect. If the process is not clear and you can’t get the answers you need, keep looking!

Step 5: Expect a Mess There is no way around this one. Renovations are dusty and disrupt your regular living. The best thing you can do is to prepare your family for it. Is there an alternate cooking method you can set up short term, like a plug-in cooktop or a BBQ? The good news is that renovations are rarely a surprise so you can talk to your contractor to find out what to expect well in advance. You can also ask your contractor how they can help to minimize the inconvenience. Do they clean up every day? Can they install a temporary sink? Do they use drop cloths throughout the house? How does the contractor manage the schedule to eliminate delays? These are all things that can help ease the process in addition to preparing you and your family physically and mentally. Step 6: Enjoy the Adventure! If you weren’t in the excited or adventure category when thinking about renovating, hopefully you will be by demolition day! If you have a great vision, have done a little homework, have played with renderings, have chosen a contractor, and have prepared your family for a little disruption, you are ready to move from the hesitation stage to the bring-it-on stage! Renovating does not need to be a stressful process when you have a contractor you trust and a team to guide you through the process. Each step is moving you closer to realizing your vision. When you’ve reached the adventure stage, you have officially recovered from Renovation Hesitation. Sit back and enjoy the adventure!

According to a study in the UK, the average person spends one and a half years of his or her life in the bathroom. If you do your hair and make-up in your bathroom daily as well, it is likely more. one are the days of houses filled with silk plants. The natural beauty of living plants brings a breath of life to home décor. In long, cold Saskatchewan winters, indoor plants allow you to enjoy nature in the warm comfort of your home. The growing popularity of succulents, air plants, and other greenery in the home has created a demand for a larger selection to be available year round. Abby Schnaider and Erin Levesque of Duo Plant Studio recognized this need. These young mothers who share a passion for plants and decorating decided to open a business creating what they love. “It started with a succulent obsession, which led to an air plant obsession, which ended with an obsession of all things plants,” Abby explains about the startup of Duo Plant Studio in 2015. Over the past two years Abby, an interior designer, and Erin, a photographer, have set out to bring contemporary

design to homes in a different medium. They have become plant experts and love helping people select the perfect plant décor for their homes. Abby & Erin know that not everyone has a green thumb, nor does everyone have a space that is ideal for plant growth. The good news is, different plants have different needs. The key is simply to select the right plant for you and your home. “Pick plants you will succeed with in your particular environment,” says Abby. “Sun exposure and humidity will play a role in this success. Also, pick plants that suit your lifestyle. If you are gone for long periods of time or forget to water, choose drought tolerant plants. We bring plants into our homes for enjoyment, and they are only enjoyable if they are thriving.” If you aren’t sure which plants are right for your home and your lifestyle, Abby and Erin suggest thinking about the plant’s natural

If the plant naturally grows in a hot desert, it won’t need a lot of water, but it will need some light. “If you know the conditions of where the plant thrives outdoors, it may help you care for it indoors,” Erin explains. How you are displaying your plants also plays into your decision of which plants to choose. At Duo Plant Studio, Abby and Erin encourage homeowners to get creative with plants. “With so many types of plants out there, the possibilities are endless. Air plants make it easy to add living art where you couldn’t before. With no soil, they are so light that they can be added to almost anything, making a living wall or hanging applications very achievable,” explains Erin. Duo Plant Studio offers pieces for all areas of the home, from table centerpieces and wall art to pen holders. Plants, however, are not just an add-on to décor. They can also be incorporated into the design of your home. Centennial 360’s renovation team recommends planning for plants when renovating or building. Light, space, and indoor air quality all play factors in the selection and success of your plants. “If you want plants in your home, consider window placement,” says Abby. “Plants don’t have to be an afterthought to place wherever they fit. If you want ten feet of plants behind your couch and in front of a window, consider something built in. You may even want to allow for a small interior

atrium with a skylight. This is what keeps them happy and healthy,” says Alexa. According to Alexa, having the proper conditions and tools for your pet’s feeding and drinking station will help them to eat well and drink more often. One of the products Early’s recommends for pet health is a Catit Fresh and Clean Water Fountain. This fountain continuously purifies the water, making it healthier and more appealing to your pet. Your pet’s bed also plays a role in its health and comfort. Rest is important for your pet, and, therefore, so is its sleeping environment. Dog runs and dog doors are not only convenient for your pet, but also for you. You no longer have to go to the door every time your pet wants fresh air. With a dog run, you can allow your pet to run and play as much as it wants without worrying about it getting into your garden or damaging your grass. If you do not have the luxury of a dog run and you aren’t planning for a new landscaping project, there is a product that can help protect your lawn. an you afford to lose eleven days of productivity at work? How about being four times more likely to get sick than the average person? Most adults can’t afford to lose this much time, and yet, a lot of them would tell you they can’t afford more sleep. According to sleep consultant Amanda Hudye with SleepWell Consulting Group, adults lose eleven days of productivity per year and are four times more likely to get sick when they are sleep deprived. Getting a full night’s rest may be your solution to fitting more hours into your day. Sleep affects our mood, productivity, health, and our general ability to think. Sleep also has proven to affect our future well-being. Lack of sleep is a contributing factor to Alzheimer’s, dementia, Parkinson’s, mental health issues, hypertension, heart disease, and more. Can we really afford to sacrifice our sleep? Although many of us simply push ourselves too hard, not everyone actually chooses to sleep less than a healthy amount. Some of us have actually forgotten how to sleep. “As a baby you are taught the skill of sleeping. Some adults simply forget this skill. At SleepWell, we teach babies how to fall asleep, and we remind adults how to sleep,” says Amanda. With all of life’s pressures, sometimes we fall out of practice with a skill we learned many years ago. The good news is that there are many things you can do to improve your sleep, and there are people, like Amanda, who are available to help. Amanda has been a sleep consultant with SleepWell Consulting Group for four years. She started working with babies and children, and now assists adults and high performance athletes. According to Amanda, the top three factors that affect sleep are: not making sleep a priority, electronic devices in the bedroom, and the sleep environment itself. The first step to improving your sleep, however, is recognizing its importance. “I always tell my clients to start by sitting down and having a family meeting to discuss the importance of sleep. You need to learn to respect each other’s need for sleep so you can help each other out,” Amanda explains. Knowing how sleep affects your life is important for making a healthy change. Once you have decided to improve your sleep, it is critical to assess your sleep environment. Your bedroom should be a refuge and a place of comfort. Amanda suggests purging your room of all unnecessary items. “If something does not belong in your bedroom, remove it from that space. A pile of bills on your dresser is not going to help you sleep 42

at night.” Protect your sleep space. And, yes, that also means no electronic devices in bed. Cell phone, tablets, iPads, and TVs are a main contributor to sleep issues. “Cell phones give off blue wave light, which affects our production of melatonin – the chemical which allows us to sleep,” explains Amanda. “Being on your phone too close to bed time or allowing notifications to pop up overnight causes us to have trouble falling asleep, and also causes us to wake up during the night.” Amanda suggests building a charging station in your home where each family member leaves his or her phone for the night. Kids shouldn’t use electronic devices for the sixty minutes leading up to bed time, and adults should refrain from phone use thirty to forty-five minutes before bed. If you need to use your phone for an alarm, set it to do not disturb and change your light setting to night shift. Night shift will change the lighting on your phone so it is no longer giving off the blue wave light that affects your melatonin production. Aside from avoiding electronic devices, there are many other things you can do to protect your sleep space. Lighting, colours, and clutter management are all factors in creating a healthy sleep hygiene. Your bedroom is your sleep haven and should be respected as such. Keeping light out of your room will help keep you sleeping all night long. Blackout blinds are essential to an ideal sleep environment. Designing your room in calm and soothing colours will also evoke a positive sleep


GOODNIGHTSLEEPTIGHT atmosphere. Finally, proper storage solutions that keep a bedroom tidy and uncluttered create a less distracting environment for sleep. Centennial 360 suggests a large closet space with shelving units, hooks, hanging rods, and even counter space to keep clothing and accessories in place. If you are in the process of renovating or building a home, planning for proper storage space will help remove potential distraction in the bedroom. Another important factor in your sleep environment is temperature. According to Amanda, sleep loves the cold! “A cool room of 18-22oC is ideal for sleeping. If one partner wants more warmth, they can consider getting a second blanket to reach their desired level of comfort,” explains Amanda. Cool temperatures encourage the production of melatonin. When it is too hot at night, sleeping becomes a challenge. Centennial 360 sees an increase in demand for air conditioners as soon as nighttime temperatures increase during the summer. Air conditioning and proper ventilation will help you keep a consistent sleep temperature all year long. In addition, a programmable thermostat will help you regulate temperatures in your sleep environment, and will also help you save on your energy bills. Program your thermostat to go down to your desired sleep temperature an hour before bed. Once it is set, you won’t have to remember to make the change on a daily basis, and you will have created a healthier sleep hygiene. There are also a few simple things you can do leading up to bedtime that will help prepare your

body for sleep. Having a hot bath or shower before bed is not only relaxing, but it also produces a surge of melatonin from the cold sensation when you get out of the tub. At Centennial 360, designers have seen an increase in popularity for soaker tubs. A deep soaker is the perfect element for a relaxing experience before bed. Do some light reading in the tub to clear your mind, and then enter your sleep haven for a perfect night of rest. Amanda also recommends dimming your lights in preparation for sleep. “Dimming your lighting the hour leading up to bed will also help prepare your body for rest,” says Amanda. Installing dimmer switches is an easy way to create a relaxing environment in your home. No matter which technique helps you get a better sleep, acknowledging the benefits is the first step to improving your health. Each stage of sleep is important for improving your happiness, health, and productivity for the next day. “Before midnight, we enter into our deepest part of sleep,” says Amanda. “This gives us deep rest. After midnight, REM cycles begin. These cycles drain your brain. With each REM cycle that passes, approximately every one and a half hours, our brain becomes clearer and clearer for the next day.” Is your motivation for a good sleep to be more productive at work? fter two years of working in Calgary, Canadian Fashion Designer, Rebecca King, returned to her Saskatchewan roots to raise her family in Saskatoon. Growing up in the small town of Hudson Bay, SK, Rebecca found her entertainment in learning to sew her own clothing. At age 14 she discovered her love for sewing, and following high school she pursued a degree in Fashion Design & Apparel Production at Marvel College in Edmonton. Since 2005, Rebecca King has become a well-known name in the fashion industry. For two consecutive years, Rebecca King was featured in the Mercedes-Benz Start Up competition, and has also been named one of Canada’s Top 20 Emerging Fashion Designers. At Centennial 360 we love to celebrate local success stories, so we sat down with Rebecca King to learn a little more about her fashion journey. C360 - What is your mission with fashion? Rebecca - I have a personal mission, and a mission for my clothing. What I am trying to do is just be able to do what I love, which is to create. I love designing; it is a constant state of mind where you are always interested and looking at beauty and details. I love sewing and bringing those details to life. My mission for my clothing is to create something that everyone will look good in, no matter their size. I love my pieces to be the ones you want to wear EVERY day because they are comfortable, and you look great. They are easy to wear and fit within a reasonable budget. They

Rebecca - My favourite Saskatchewan season is fall, and my favourite things to design are jackets. Something about the colour pallets, tailoring and wearability of a fall piece is what I love the most, and it really fits perfectly into our climate. C360 - Where do you manufacture your clothing? Rebecca - I do all of the designing, sourcing, pattern drafting, and sample making from Saskatoon, and the final production is done in Vancouver. C360 - How do you balance your personal life and work demands? Rebecca - It is a constant struggle to find balance, especially in the fashion world where things move at an extremely fast pace. I try to move at my own speed and not be influenced too much by the pressures around me, which can be hard to manage, because I have a lot of drive and passion for what I do. I can’t say that I have found the perfect balance, but I have a supportive husband and a love for what I do, so that makes things a little easier. C360 - Tell us about your new Rebecca King Mini line and where your inspiration came from for this. Rebecca - I began creating my pieces in mini versions when my daughter was born 4 years ago. Unable to keep up with the demand for my women’s line, I decided to wait to launch a children’s line until now. Everything looks so sweet when it’s tiny, and I enjoyed recreating my signature pieces in a mini version. The first mini piece that will be released is the mini three way sweater, which will come out in the early 2016 Christmas season. centennial360.com

ccording to the Coffee Association of Canada (CAC), 67% of Canadians between the ages of 18 and 79 drink coffee on a daily basis. Of these cups of coffee, 71% are brewed at home. Regardless of recent influence on coffee consumption from the popularity of Keurig, Tassimo, Starbucks, and Tim Hortons, it is safe to say that Canadians have always loved coffee! Whether you have an open layout or sectioned spaces, people will navigate their way to the action. Deciding on whether or not to host your party at home is not just dependent on your space and layout. If your home does not have the layout you desire for a party, it may still have a benefit over all other locations – flexibility! “When you host an event in your home, you can make it completely customized!” exclaims Molly. “Often with a venue you are restricted in some way whether it be the number of guests you are able to invite, or the type of food you are able to serve. In your home you can hire a caterer and choose a menu specific to the needs of your guests, and customize the décor as well to relay a super personalized feel.” Although hosting often requires you to be the decorator, bartender, caterer, and sometimes the entertainer, the benefits of flexibility and customization are something you can’t get anywhere else. Once you have selected your home as your party venue, it’s time to get planning. Where do you start? With the guests, of course! Just like designing a renovation, planning a party is all about the

people who will be enjoying it. “When I plan a party, I always look to the guests for inspiration,” says Molly. “Who I am inviting really dictates the look and feel of the party.” Whether you are a party planning extraordinaire or you have never hosted an event before, if you know your guests and pay attention to their experience, your party will be set up for success. Molly’s advice is to simply be a happy host. “If you as a host are relaxed and accommodating, your guests will feel comfortable and happy. If you are stressed or overwhelmed with having guests over, then that is what your guests will remember about your party. If you order take out, but you are relaxed and make guests feel comfortable in your home, they won’t remember what they were served. our home is an investment that may last your entire lifetime. It is a haven for you and your family, and a place of comfort and security. You take a lot of pride in your home, and you should! It is a reflection of your family’s life together. Whether your home is old or new, well used or freshly renovated, it is important to take care of your investment. Simple home maintenance can help prevent damage, save money, and most importantly, protect you and your home. Paul Trimble from Centennial 360 is a journeyman plumber who has been fixing and maintaining homes for over fifteen years. He is a home expert and loves helping people. One of Paul’s best qualities as a technician is his ability to carefully explain home systems to homeowners and help them understand how to care for their home and keep it safe. “There are many things that a homeowner can do to prevent their equipment from breaking down, starting with a basic furnace tune-up,” says Paul. Furnace tune-ups should be completed annually to have the equipment checked and cleaned. This not only helps prevent breakdowns, but also ensures your equipment is running at peak efficiency. The more efficient your system, the more money you save on gas 56

and electrical bills. Air conditioners should also be tuned up annually to increase their lifespan and improve efficiency. Paul explains, “Homeowners should check to ensure that any fresh air or combustion air intakes going into the house from the outside are free from debris. These are usually found on the back or the side of the house. These intakes have hoods with rodent screens that need to be cleaned as well.” Along with tune-ups, furnaces also need their filters replaced on a regular basis. The frequency of replacement is dependent on the home. Most homes require a new furnace filter every two to three months, but if you have pets, are going through a renovation, or have a lot of activity in your home, you may need to replace it monthly. “You should set a schedule for filter replacement, or we can do that for you at Centennial 360,” says Paul. Centennial 360 offers a filter delivery program where you receive a new filter at your doorstep monthly or quarterly, helping remind you to make the change. Like furnaces, some water heaters also have a filter that requires maintenance. “Most new water heaters have a filter on the bottom of the tank


HOMEMAINTENANCE where all the combustion air comes through, so that needs to be cleaned properly,” Paul explains. This can be done during an annual water heater tune-up. Newer homes, or any home that has had a plumbing permit pulled on it within the last fifteen years, have a dual check valve and expansion tank as part of their plumbing system. “It is VERY important to check the pressure of your expansion tank once a year. This can save you from destroying your water heater,” says Paul. You can check your expansion tank by shutting off the water to your home, turning on a faucet to drain off water pressure, removing the cap off the tank, and using your tire pressure gauge to check pressure. It should read between 40 and 60 psi. “If you need to pump up the pressure, I recommend checking it again in a couple of weeks. If it has lost air again, you will need to replace the expansion tank,” says Paul. If an expansion tank does fail along with the water heater pressure relief valve, it will ruin the water heater, creating a much more costly repair. If you are not comfortable checking the pressure yourself, you can simply ask your technician to check it during your annual water heater or furnace tune-up. “Expansion tanks are a newer product. Until fifteen years ago this was not a requirement in Saskatoon, so a lot of people simply don’t know about it,” Paul adds. Another maintenance item many homeowners are unaware of is changing laundry hoses. “Laundry hoses should be changed every five years,” Paul explains. “They are a rubber hose and they do

wear out. All other water lines in your house are either copper or PEX. Here you have rubber hoses that are under the same pressure as regular water lines, so they are not as reliable.” Turning off shutoff valves to outside taps in the fall will protect your other water lines from bursting as well. Sump pumps are also a main player in your plumbing system, and should be checked regularly. “If you have a sump pit, it should be tested annually,” says Paul. “This can be done by putting water in the pit to make sure it runs. If there is a bunch of sediment or dirt in there, it should be cleaned out.” You can also book an annual sump maintenance check with your service provider for peace of mind. If a sump pump is not working, your home risks flooding during a heavy rainfall or when there is excess ground water around your home. To prevent flooding during a sump pump failure or a power outage, install a battery back-up sump pump that will kick in if the water level in the pump becomes dangerously high. Some battery backup systems include an alarm to alert you that it is running on back-up. In addition to the heating, ventilation, and plumbing systems of your home, your electrical system also requires a little bit of attention. “When it comes to electrical, prevention is the best protection,” says Paul. You can help protect your electrical systems and home electronics with whole home surge protection. This will mitigate damage during small and large electrical surges through your systems. Paul also recommends checking your GFI outlets regularly to confirm their functionality. Simply press the test button, and then reset it. If your outlet works on the reset, everything is normal. You can also book a home electrical check with your service provider to ensure nothing is overloaded, and that your system is functioning properly and safely. Why should you do all of these checks on a regular basis? “By doing these simple checks, you can prevent high repair costs,” says Paul. Neglecting maintenance may cause breakdowns with your equipment that are not covered under regular warranty. “During a furnace tune-up, we clean the combustion chamber and burners,” Paul explains. “If there is too much dust built up on the burners, it can prevent the furnace from starting up. This will lead to a service call or emergency service. Unfortunately, repairs due to a lack of maintenance are not covered under manufacturers’ warranties.” A few check-ups and a little bit of TLC will keep the equipment in your home running at its highest capability, and, most importantly, will help keep your home safe for you and your family. centennial360.com
