Spring 2018 News at Cottonwood Creek Ranch Exciting things have been happening here at Cottonwood Creek Ranch! March 1st was our official move in date at our new location in Oklahoma City. We are now conveniently located just three miles from the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds at 907 N. Chisholm, between N. Council Road and N. MacArthur Blvd. On March 19-23, we will be hosting a Spring Break Riding Camp for Oklahoma City’s aspiring young equestrians. Come join us for this educational camp from 9 am to 3 pm, ages 6-14, beginner to advanced students are welcome. Your child will learn how to brush, saddle and ride horses with safety minded professional instructors. Action-packed days will be filled with riding, activities and crafts. We have qualified instructors and safe lesson horses. Only $325 for the week, 10% off if you are already taking lessons at CCR, or if you purchase a package of five lessons before the start of camp. Easter Egg Hunt Join us for our First Annual Cottonwood Creek Ranch Easter Egg Hunt on March 24th! The fun begins at 2 pm and lasts until 4 pm. Plan to hop on down to the farm for an eggperience you’ll never forget! From 2-3, we will have pony rides and horse painting. At 3:15 sharp, we will kick off our Easter egg hunt. Eggs will include candy and some lucky hunters might find a certificate for a free first riding lesson. There will be five lesson certificates for each age group to find. Age groups will be kindergarten and under, 1st-5th grade and 6th grade on up. This fun day is our Easter gift to you and we are looking forward to meeting new people and welcoming them into the sport of riding! Machine Art Contest at the Oklahoma City Zoo The Oklahoma City Zoo and Dr Pepper invite Oklahoma students to participate in the 14th annual Dr Pepper Vending Machine Art Contest for a chance to have their design displayed on a Dr Pepper machine at the Zoo and win wild prizes. We want students to create original designs incorporating the contest theme “2018 is the Year of the Bird: Celebrate our World’s Winged Wonders.” About the theme: “Year of the Bird: Celebrate our World’s Winged Wonders” National Geographic has declared 2018 to be the “Year of the Bird” to mark the centennial of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and announced a year-long campaign dedicated to raising awareness for birds. In support of this effort, the OKC Zoo is encouraging aspiring artists, conservationists to celebrate the “Year of the Bird” and illustrate how best they would help our world’s winged wonders with their entries for the Dr Pepper Vending Machine Art Contest. The OKC Zoo is proud to join forces with National Geographic, National Audubon Society, Cornell Lab of Ornithology, BirdLife International, and millions of nature lovers in this global effort around the globe to help birds and their habitats. This campaign aims to remind people of the wonder and beauty of birds and the responsibility we all have for caring for our shared planet. To get started, visitors to BirdYourWorld.org will discover simple but meaningful steps that anyone can take to help birds each month and join a pledge to participate.

The activities take place from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and encourage hands-on participation and gallery exploration through the Museum’s new temporary exhibitions, Unlocking the Vault: Mysteries and Marvels of the Museum and Do You See What I See? Painted Conversations by Theodore Waddell. “There are so many new and exciting things to explore at the Museum and we are looking forward to another fun-filled spring break with local families,” said Inez S. Wolins, the Museum’s Chief Public Experience Officer. “Our dedicated craft stations and intriguing new exhibitions are sure to excite the most curious little minds.” Other upcoming events include the first-ever Murder Mystery Night: Rare and Wondrous Curiosities from the West on April 7 and Family Sleepover on April 28. 2018 Gramling Steam Locomotive ticketing information Steam Train Rides April 7-8 & 14-15, 2018 Relive the golden age of steam railroading when the Oklahoma Railway Museum host Leigh Valley Coal Company #126 The beautifully restored 1930s-era coal-burning saddle tank steam locomotive affectionately known as “Sadie”. Ride in vintage 1920s & 30s passenger cars or on an open flatcar or caboose and enjoy the unique experience of hearing that engine chug down the track during the 40 minute excursion. Participants must be at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license. Release forms are required. Clothing appropriate to a working rail yard should be worn at all times. Jeans or overalls and boots are recommended. Participants wishing to have their picture made should bring a camera. Friends or family or a member of the crew can take a photo of each “At the Throttle” participant.

In this camp, students will spend a week designing and creating their own mythical creature out of paper mache, paint and other mixed-media materials. They'll explore the concepts of 3-D sculpture building and use contemporary techniques along with the traditional process of paper mache to construct their creature. Camp Claphans A Residential Summer Camp for Children with Disabilities The camp is for kids ages 8 to 18 and is an outreach project of the J.D. McCarty Center for children with developmental disabilities. The camp is located on the hospital's campus at 2002 E. Robinson St. in Norman. It features two cabins, an activities building and an 11-acre lake. Camp activities include horseback riding, archery, arts and crafts, swimming, scavenger hunts, fishing and canoeing. Other activities include talent shows, dance parties and stargazing. Also, campers get to visit a local water park during their last day at camp. We offer camp sessions that consist of four days and three nights. The cost to attend a session is $325. Scholarships are available to families who qualify. Each camp session begins Sunday afternoon and ends on Wednesday afternoon. Campers sleep in a large, wheelchairaccessible, climate- controlled cabin, shared by other campers and counselors. Each camper is assigned to a counselor for the week. Campers' medical needs are overseen by onsite nurses. A physician is also available if there is a need. Camp sessions are limited to 12 campers, six males and six females divided into two cabins. Camp History Camp ClapHans opened in 2013. The camp is named in honor of the late Sammy Jack Claphan, a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and an Oklahoma native. Claphan played football at the University of Oklahoma and graduated with a degree in special education. He later played in the NFL for the Cleveland Browns and the San Diego Chargers. After retiring from the NFL, he returned to Oklahoma and became a special education teacher. He died in 2001. 2018 Camp Sessions: Session 1 June 10 - June 13; Session 2 June 17 - June 20; Session 3 June 24 - June 27; Session 4 July 8 - July 11; Session 5July 15 - July 18. Spring Break Escape at Sam Noble Museum Enjoy five action-packed days of learning, dancing, crafting and playing at this year’s Spring Break Escape event, taking place March 19-23 at the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History. The annual event offers families a variety of activities that range from live music to meeting museum scientists and holding foot-long millipede. Visitors also can participate in hands-on experiments to learn about birds, make a homemade rocket and boogie down with one of the area’s favorite musical duos, the Sugar Free Allstars, and Norman’s favorite one-man band, Mike Hosty. Friday, March 23: Round out the week by celebrating culture. See an arrowhead-making demonstration, watch as the Oklahoma Fancy Dancers demonstrate their traditional American Indian tribal dances, take part in Kiowa and Caddo storytelling, and dig for arrow points.
