AT HOME WITH

RON RUDZIN, FOUNDER, SAATVA

What is your favorite room in your house?

My bedroom is my favorite room, because I am an early bird who truly appreciates a great night of rest. Every morning, I watch business and sports news in bed with a cup of coffee to start my day before the world wakes up.

What makes this particular space special?

My Saatva Classic mattress and adjustable base combination make my bedroom cozy and functional. I elevate my head and feet, and gently ease my way into the day before the phone starts ringing. It's my place of solitude. To help make my bedroom more relaxing, I keep the color scheme neutral and muted.

What are some things that you personally feel make your house a home?

My house is designed for comfort, and each room serves a different purpose. For example, I have a cozy sitting room where I typically have a second cup of coffee and read the

newspaper before heading into the office or working from my home office. I also like to spend time there chatting with my wife and close friends in the evenings. On the weekends, I use it to listen to music or read a magazine—other activities that I can do to relax without a computer or television. Most of all, my family, including my two wonderful dogs, Rudy and Ziggy, makes my house more of a home than anything else. 

THE ENDURANCE OF MARBLE

From ancient times to modern day, marble has always topped the list of coveted building and décor materials.

uses of marble

Inventive
can give spaces a modern,

Medieval and Renaissance sculptors took full advantage of the properties of marble.

One of the most attractive, complex and durable materials in the building world, marble has a long, luxurious history. Here’s a quick guide to the most enduring rock of all time, including its history, its aesthetic and its uses.

1. Marble is limestone or dolomite that has been transformed under the powers of pressure and heat into a metamorphic rock. The calcite in the rock is recrystallized under these conditions, and the interlocking of the crystals creates the shimmer and sparkle for which marble is coveted. Much of the marble that we use commercially now was formed under the ocean floor at least 60 million years ago—and some is much, much older.

2. The word “marble” derives from the Ancient Greek marmaron, which means “crystalline rock” or “shining stone.” In Greece, the radiant material

6
The appeal of marble has not wavered throughout the centuries—its opulent finish and durability make it an enduring favorite.

has been used in artwork and architecture since the late neolithic era (5300–4500 BC).

3. To preserve the organs of Ancient Egyptian pharaohs and dignitaries, ornately carved marble vessels containing the deceased’s organs, including their heart, were placed alongside their mummified bodies. Marble, along with gold, was seen as the finest material of the time, and was present in various forms throughout the pyramids.

4. In Medieval and Renaissance times, marble became ubiquitous in affluent environs, forming the floors of palaces and cathedrals, and flooring and fixtures in the homes of the well-heeled. It was also used to build complete structures— most famously, the Taj Mahal.

5. Revered artists throughout history have also favored marble for their sculpture work,

for many reasons. It is relatively soft when it is newly mined, and hardens over time to preserve and artist’s work. The grain of marble is very fine, meaning that greater detail can be achieved. The stone’s slight translucency gives the impression of a glow from within, and highquality finishes can be achieved.

6. It’s commonly thought that most marble is white, shot through with veins of gray or black. In fact, there are myriad colors of marble depending on the impurities in the limestone. Pure calcite gives us white, while the presence of serpentine imparts a green tinge, and iron oxide or clay might produce a pink marble.

7. Most marble is mined from open quarries and extracted in blocks. It is then cut, using wire or block cutters, into slabs or strips, which are then further processed into their end products— things like tiles and countertops. Finally,

the marble is finished with processes such as polishing, ageing, hammering and sanding, all of which produce different results depending on the desired use of the marble.

8. Marble remains popular in architecture because of its durability, but also for its lightreflecting properties, which help to create a sense of space and light in a home. As it is a natural material, marble brings a sense of warmth and connection to the earth; and because of its long association with royalty and prosperity, it creates the impression of luxury.

9. Modern homeowners can incorporate marble into their homes in a multitude of ways—from tiles to countertops, staircases and fireplaces. It’s a timeless, beautiful choice for a home, and if it is cleaned, maintained and sealed regularly, marble will last you a lifetime. 

A LESSON IN LUXURY

Understanding the classic structures that once dominated American architecture may just be the key to unlocking the secrets of today’s most sought-after homes.

8

It’s easy to get caught up in the latest residential architecture and design trends. Viral videos on social media see us pledging our love to bohemian cottagecore and eclectic maximalism one moment, only to get swept up into monochromatic minimalism a few months later.

Interior design trend cycles are always in flux, so decor is transient—easily replaced every few years. But the structures themselves endure, and there are some standout architectural styles that will always be sought-after in

the housing market. Whether it’s a heritage dwelling or a more modern build, American homes embrace a plethora of styles and influences, much like the nation itself. Iconic architectural styles tell the tales of our past; wars, global events, philosophy, art, history, and even the nation’s landscape all play a unique role in residential architecture, and a building’s absorption of the influences of its time plays a big part in determining whether it becomes a classic or is destined to be torn down and replaced.

Understanding these styles and their compelling histories is not only important for gaining a deeper insight into what luxury has looked like in the past, but it also provides the tools to recreate these styles in a modern context.

CAPE COD

Cape Cod design is one of America’s quintessential home styles, and is possibly the most interesting architecture trend in our nation’s history. Built in the 17th century in the northeast by early European settlers, Cape Cod homes drew inspiration from the simple thatched cottages found in Britain. Over time, the style was adapted to the harsh New England winters. In the middle of a Cape Cod home, you’ll find a central chimney, which

once provided heat and light to all of the rooms surrounding it, while cedar shingles on the roof worked to keep the cold out.

While this type of home was eventually replaced by the next big thing in architecture, the movement was revived in the 1920s, when Boston architect Royal Barry Willis modernized the Cape Cod home and introduced essential modern amenities, making it endlessly popular, even now, particularly in the northeast. Loved for its historical and unfussy look, a Cape Cod home symbolizes coziness, early American history and the windswept coast of the northeastern states.

Cape Cod homes are characterized by their steep gabled roofs and shingled exteriors, and their lack of superfluous ornamentation. The simple, all-American home is enduringly versatile, making it a timeless and classic trend.

To maintain the charm and nostalgia of a Cape Cod home, keep things classic on the exterior with cedar shingles, and keep the outdoor decor simple. Cape Cod homes have small windows to combat the cold; consider putting in bigger windows to allow more natural light in, but ensure that you maintain the look of the structure.

Cape Cod style makes use of simplicity and natural materials.

A traditional Cape Cod home is clad in cedar shingles.
9

Compared to the interiors of other architectural styles, Cape Cod homes present quite a blank canvas—they do not boast strong style elements that define a space. The rooms are generally symmetrical and small. Natural materials are used to finish the interiors, including brick, stone, and hardwood floors. Nautical themes have long been favored for the interior design of Cape Cod homes—a theme that can date very quickly.

For an updated Cape Cod style, keep things bright. The smaller windows and rooms can mean darker spaces, so paint the walls a fresh white shade. Furnishings can be more rustic, but keep the lines clean. Wood tables, overstuffed chairs and sofas, and rattan or wicker furniture can give a coastal feel without overdoing it. Instead of boat oars, life buoys, and ship barometers, look for nautical accents with style.

Hang a simple, round mirror that is reminiscent of a porthole, or add navy-and-white striped cushions to your linen sectional. A sisal rug is a great option, as is a modern-style coffee table of bleached wood.

GILDED AGE

If you’ve been tuning in to HBO’s series The Gilded Age, you’ll be familiar with the opulence and larger-than-life features of this architectural style. Impossibly high ceilings, heavy wood wainscoting and balustrades, dramatic windows and stone facades typify this style of home. Inside, heavy velvet curtains, grand oil paintings, opulent upholstery, marble surfaces and dazzling crystal chandeliers are key features in this celebration of elegance and maximalism.

America’s Gilded Age refers to the period after the Civil War and before the turn of the 20 th

century. It peaked in the 1870s, and is best defined as a time when materialism and economic prosperity were highly sought after. A person’s wealth was no longer measured only by the size of their home—flamboyant and outright showy displays layered on top of the structure were the best way to flaunt status. Every blank wall, floor, and ceiling provided an opportunity for the richest of the rich to showcase their bursting pockets, with every corner of every room carefully curated and meticulously designed. In essence, the architecture and interior design of the Gilded Age is an amalgamation of European styles—Victorian Gothic, Italian Renaissance, Roman Classical, and French Baroque.

There’s no real question as to why these homes are still popular with a certain type of homebuyer—they are the epitome of luxury and style, and showcase a time when the value of one’s

10
Even the most ornate of Gilded Age homes can be modernized with sensitive design.

surroundings was of utmost importance. While Gilded Age homes are less common on the market than some other styles, you can still find incredible townhouses in Manhattan, Italianate villas in Newport, and red brick mansions in the Midwest.

To pay homage to the opulence of the late 1800s while acknowledging that you live in modern times, there are some subtle things you can do. Stay faithful to the paint colors of the period, but paint trims and adornments in a paint that’s slightly glossier to call attention to them. Instead of covering window trims in heavy drapes, opt for in-window curtains that allow the detail to stand out. And use modern LED lighting to bring dimension into the home, and illuminate the key aspects of the design.

You’re most likely going to bring some modern elements in your home, like televisions and computers, and these are at odds with Gilded Age design. If you mix in some other more current furnishings—a large sofa with clean lines, but in a luxurious fabric like leather or velvet; or a contemporary chandelier with golden elements to complement the “gilded” theme—these technological impositions won’t be so obvious amid the period details.

RANCH

Traditional ranch-style homes may not be the most obvious choice when it comes to pursuing luxury, but the iconic American ranch build has a plethora of design features that lend themselves to creating a successful, wellthought-out floor plan.

Ranch-style homes first began to rise in popularity in the 1920s; the southwest states saw an influx of families looking for affordable homes after World War I. As the Great Depression took hold toward the 1930s, the ranch-style home became a staple in America’s suburbs due to the low-cost materials used to build them.

These homes are characterized by their asymmetrical shape, single story, and open floor plans that place emphasis on communal areas. Unlike the European-inspired architecture that previously reigned supreme in the early days of modern America, ranch-style homes removed the walls and invited a sense of warmth, openness, and community into homes for the first time. Ranch-style homes also place emphasis on the outdoors, with every room featuring large windows overlooking the yard, as well as plenty of natural lighting.

Today, ranch-style homes are still popular, as many love the traditional, family-focused floor plan, where the kitchen is at the heart of the home and the rest of the house is built around it. Such an inviting element can present an opportunity for luxury, too. Big, custom kitchens overlooking manicured gardens are a dream for many families, while having only a single story lends itself well to many other style elements and inspirations—from retro 1960s conversation pits to more sleek builds that almost blend into the surrounding landscape.

For decor, choose elements that facilitate spending time with others; large sofas with plenty of seating; dining tables big enough for plenty of place settings; and kitchen stools that encourage discussion while preparing meals. In keeping with a ranch vibe, leather furniture is a great option, as are tables made of rough-hewn wood. For hints of modernity, incorporate a sleek wood-burning fire, and keep silhouettes streamlined. Don’t be tempted to split up the different areas—keep your living area as open as possible. You can, however, isolate different themes for the living room, dining area, and kitchen, as long as they complement one another. This helps to divide a space without making it claustrophobic.

11
Long and low, the ranch home has a desirable open floor plan and overlooks the outdoors.

MID-CENTURY MODERN

While those of us from generations past understand that mid-century modern is one of the most iconic styles of the past century, TikTok users across the globe are only just catching on, scouring thrift stores and online estate sales for original pieces. And while this decor style will work in any number of modern spaces, it’s more difficult to bring decor elements from other eras into a mid-century home—difficult, but not impossible.

Recognized as a significant design movement, mid-century modern swept through the United States and Europe after World War II. Using the technological and industrial advancements pioneered around the globe throughout World War I and World War II, mid-century modern saw designers and architects eagerly develop new and exciting ideas that looked optimistically toward the future. With mass

production now thriving and many families back on their feet after wartime, mid-century modern replaced outdated frills and ornate details. This style aligned with the Modernist movement that was popular at the time, and saw a move toward clean lines, natural textures, and multifunctional design.

At its core, mid-century modern style is an ode to simplicity, and because of that, midcentury homes are still highly desirable in modern times. Functionality, minimal design, and good - quality wood marry for an elegant space that is actually a great blank canvas for myriad modern elements. Scandinavian decor pairs particularly well with mid-century homes, as both styles emphasize clean lines and natural textures.

When the mid-century style was first established, indoor plants were not quite as

prevalent as they are now—they were more likely to be used as a sculptural feature than to create an indoor garden. But plants will always enhance a space; just ensure that plants do not overwhelm the design elements of the structure—choose shapes and colors that are sympathetic to the style.

Artwork is another great way to bring current design into a mid-century home. Look for abstract and geometric design, which has never gone out of style in the art world, and will look right at home in your mid-century living room.

Lastly, bold pops of color are a hallmark of mid-century styling, so look for pieces in bright blues and oranges; earthy greens, like apple and avocado; and warm reds and pinks. Rugs and cushions can bring these colors into the space and bring some 2020s style into a mid-century home, without looking out of place. 

12
Simplicity is key in a mid-century modern home—as are quality timbers and streamlined decor.

WHAT’S OLD IS NOT NEW… IT’S BETTER

You no longer need to sacrifice style and luxury to be eco-conscious.

Interior design has always been about creating unique spaces that reflect the personality and style of the homeowner. When creating a space, a designer considers how the homeowners live, their preferred styles and colors, their budget, and the unique features that reflect their personality. They bring this combination to life through material finishes, furniture, and decor items.

As sustainability and environmental concerns become increasingly important, people are asking their designers to incorporate eco - conscious materials and furniture into their plans. Until recently, this limited designers to items that were rustic, industrial, or artsy, but not luxurious.

The increasing focus on recycling in our day-to - day lives has spilled over into the trend of repurposing old items. No longer solely the realm of DIY enthusiasts, repurposing now also appeals to high-end designers. Skilled craftspeople are making luxury pieces from recycled materials for their discerning clients.

These pieces can add a touch of luxury to any room while also serving as a conversation starter; for example, the Cluster Bomb Cabinet from Plane Industries is an eye-catching drinks cabinet made from a retired missile fuselage. The functioning bar is a spectacular piece with a commanding presence, guaranteed to draw interest from guests.

FINISHES AND MATERIALS

If a homeowner desires to lessen their home’s environmental impact, they should first look at the largest surfaces in the home, such as walls, flooring, and countertops.

Paint

Environmentally friendly paint is primarily characterized by a low VOC value. VOCs are “volatile organic compounds” that are released as the paint dries, and for some time thereafter. VOCs assist

13
ecoBirdy’s kid-sized furniture is made from recycled plastics.

If

with the quality of application and the drying process; thus, historically it was difficult to produce a high-quality paint in a variety of colors that was also eco-friendly. However, as awareness of the health and environmental impacts of VOCs has grown, paint companies have developed new formulas that use alternative ingredients to achieve the same performance standards without the use of harmful VOCs. Responding to interest among home buyers for eco-friendly paints, most major luxury brands, such as Farrow & Ball, Little Greene Paint Company and Designer’s Guild, have created eco-friendly lines.

Countertops

A variety of existing high-end materials use either recycled or sustainable materials for both flooring and countertops. The most notable are terrazzo and quartz, which are both engineered stone surfaces that combine bits of marble, granite, or glass with cement or resins that are polished to resemble natural stone while offering greater durability. A relatively new product on the market from Foresso has been called “timber terrazzo”. This solid-surface product is made from wood waste sourced from felled trees, as well as cement and plaster dust, mixed with a non-toxic binding glue. The material can be used as a countertop and in furniture design.

The same company took recycling to the next level by introducing their ‘No Chip’ solid surface, made with their extraction dust and wood waste. The raw waste is then mixed with a non-toxic binder and polished. The resulting product is akin to a silky-smooth matte paint finish.

Flooring

There are several sustainable flooring options, including cement, cork, bamboo, luxury vinyl plank (LVP), natural linoleum, and even marmoleum, a resilient linoleum made from natural and recycled materials. Vinyl floors use recycled products, but also have toxic glues to consider. Recycled rubber products, such as old tires, make excellent flooring for recreational areas like home

14

gyms and workshop spaces. Luxury flooring made from 100 percent recycled material is limited, but new brands are coming to market that use plastic ocean waste to create stunning carpets.

Ceramic, porcelain, and terracotta tiles are naturally eco-friendly, as they’re made from clay and dirt; however, to ensure a truly ecoconscious choice, it’s important to consider factors like distance from source and sealers used. If you’re after a high-end luxury option made entirely from recycled materials, glass is the way to go. While the glass used in all tiles is similar, it’s the design and application that sets them apart. Invest in a professional tiler to create intricate designs that will showcase the beauty of this unique product.

FURNITURE

While buying new, hip furniture and decor is tempting, repurposing old items is an ecofriendly and stylish way to create unique and luxurious interiors. One of the benefits of repurposing old items is that they add character and interest to a space. Vintage furniture, for example, can give a room a timeless quality and create a sense of history that cannot be replicated with new furniture. On the other hand, if you are not crafty, or are looking for something more upscale, try these stores and designers.

ecoBirdy

In 2018, after researching, designing, and material and prototype testing, ecoBirdy created a four-piece collection of kid-sized design furniture entirely made from recycled plastic toys. The company has since launched adult and decor items.

Petit h

Petit h is an offshoot of luxury brand Hermès, in which expert artisans from every Hermès métier work hand in hand with artists and guest designers to create unique, functional objects from Hermès leather scraps. The items are playful, and based not on a preconceived notion of Hermès as a brand, but rather on the materials themselves.

Plane Industries

Plane Industries is a British furniture brand that uses authentic aircraft parts to create beautiful, functional pieces for the home or office. The brand was founded in 2013 by two brothers with a shared love of breaking and making stuff, who set out to breathe new life and purpose into old, beloved objects.

Magis Design

Magis Design, a multifaceted Italian furniture design and manufacturing company, creates products that adorn residences, public areas, and more than 35 museums worldwide. Their designs prioritize aesthetics and functionality for the present and future. As part of their commitment to sustainability, they have begun

incorporating waste generated from their production processes into their product line.

LIGHTING

When it comes to luxury lighting, few fixtures can rival the grandeur of a chandelier. But environmentally conscious faux crystals leave a lot to be desired, and some recycled materials offer a more contemporary and engaging look.

Graypants

The Seattle-based design studio creates modern lighting collections made entirely from repurposed materials. Graypants’ mission is to create modern design that is ecologically responsible from start to finish. 

15
The Sun Pendants from Seattle design studio Graypants are made from laser-cut, recycled cardboard.

INTERIOR SALVATION

Saving beautiful objects and giving them new life in our homes is an act of sensitivity, sustainability, and creativity.

Salvage used to be a dirty word, both figuratively and literally. Reserved for the penny-pinchers and self-building hippies, objects and materials found in salvage yards have historically been disparaged as unsightly or derelict, and many a luxury homeowner favors new design elements over old.

But imagine that you have a beautiful new home, bedecked with modern finishes and sleek surfaces. Your friends visit, observing, “Oh, we have that lamp—don’t you just LOVE it in a modern kitchen?” or “You got the Geo Armchair from ABC Carpet and Home? So expensive, but so worth it!”

Or maybe you bought a period residence, and it’s full of the charm and craftmanship of a particular era. A chrome-and-glass LED chandelier over the Victorian kitchen island isn’t going to cut it—but a pendant lamp with Czech glass? Perfection.

It’s easy to replace the mental image of salvage as just dirty fire pokers and chipped mirrors. Merely scratching the surface of an antique store or salvage yard reveals that items from yesteryear can hold great meaning and value. Consider that the word “salvage” means “to

save.” Each piece that we find by salvaging has been rescued from a place where it was no longer needed or appreciated. We allow it to shine again in its new setting. Each item tells a story, has a history, and is a rich addition to your home as a result.

Vintage pieces—particularly those produced before the Industrial Revolution—boast quality and craftsmanship that are more difficult to find in modern design (there are exceptions, of course). They expunge the cookie-cutter aesthetic that we find in a lot of modern interiors, and they remove wastage from the equation. Bringing an older item back into use is an act of sustainability, and the value derived from being aware of our environmental impact can’t be understated.

Those of us who are not interior designers might not give a lot of thought to salvaging furniture and materials, but professionals in the decor space are embracing the excitement and reward of hunting for vintage goods. How do they source the best pieces for a home?

KNOW WHAT YOUR HOME NEEDS

It’s easy for amateur salvagers to get caught up in the excitement of finding beautiful objects, but it’s also very important to have a firm idea of what you need. Your home has an aesthetic, and what you’re looking for must complement the

16

Incorporating salvaged furniture into your design can create unique and welcoming spaces.

17

style of the house. Similarly, size is important; procuring something that is too large or too small for your space will not do you any interior favors. Too often, we leave a salvage yard with a vehicle load of salvaged objects that, while beautiful, do not work in the context of the home. Always honor the era, design, and feel of a building—as well as your own tastes and preferences—and you can’t go wrong.

If you’re not sure whether something is right for your home, walk away. Give it some thought, re-measure your space, and if you become certain that it’s what you need, you can always

return to purchase it. (Don’t leave it too long, though—these objects are often one-of-a-kind, and if they’re high quality, someone else might snap them up).

DISCOVER THE PROVENANCE

To really understand what you’re looking at, ask the seller. Aim to discover how old the piece is, where it was produced, where it has been housed, who designed or constructed it, and what it’s made of. Answers to these questions can tell you a lot about the item, and will convey an accurate picture of its value. They’ll also give

you the story that adds richness to the piece’s presence in your home: “You’ll find spare blankets in the steamer trunk at the end of your bed. Did I mention it’s from a ship’s passage in the days of the British Raj?”

AVOID A SCATTERSHOT APPROACH

While it’s fun visiting all of the antique stores and salvage yards in your area, it’s a good idea to learn about each retailer’s niche. Some will specialize in industrial pieces, like those sourced from factories, schools, and churches; others will have cornered the market on stone, tiles,

18

and marble. Narrow down your aesthetic, and identify the outlets that are most likely to have what you need for your home.

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX

Your first thought for salvaging goods will most likely be retail outlets, but there are plenty of avenues that you can explore. Estate sales can turn up treasure (there are online resources for finding when and where estate sales are happening), and even garage sales can be fruitful (be sure to arrive early, as there are professionals out there who get the good stuff before most people are even awake).

And, of course, there’s a digital option for shopping for salvage: the internet. “Digital digging” is a common practice now for those looking for beautiful vintage items. Of course, it’s harder to verify the quality and vintage of a piece when you don’t have much more than a low-quality image to go on, but there’s also the chance that you’ll find something spectacular, if you ask the right questions and view the item before you pay for it.

DON’T GET STUCK IN ONE ERA OR STYLE

As tempting as it is to match every piece in your home, whether it’s by material, period or color, salvaging items offers you a way to create a unique blend of old and new, incorporating a variety of styles and materials that complement one another. Of course, this requires careful curation—pairing a gothic dining table with Scandinavian-design chairs is unlikely to achieve a pleasing look. Try to create a space that comes together as a whole; limit your color

palette; choose one standout piece rather than cramming several into a space; use some basic, minimalistic items that allow your salvage finds to stand out; and find shapes and patterns that complement one another.

TIPS FOR SALVAGE SHOPPING

 Don’t overdo it. Choose a statement item, or something that’s subtle but completely unique to your home. If everything in your house is unique or remarkable, your eye won’t know where to settle.

 Do not impulse buy. Only spend money on something if you’re 100 percent certain that it’s the right thing for your space—otherwise, you’ll end up with a garage full of pieces that you can’t use.

 Barter, but don’t be pushy. Sellers of vintage goods are used to being asked about “the best price,” but keep in mind that they are also making a living from their business, and don’t lowball them. 
