To advertise in The CF15 Directory please call 07989 431716 Welcome to the February / March edition of The CF15 Directory! This edition brings you the usual collection of recipes, charity information & local business adverts. I also have been speaking with some prominent members of the community, who in turn have been kind enough to contribute to this edition. Thank you to Jac Ayles, Cllr Mckerlick & Mr Bussy, headmaster of Radyr Primary School for sending in your articles; & big thank you to Nick Jenkins from Freespirit Images who has submitted the picture of Castell Coch, used for the front cover. Croeso & diolch yn fawr to Ffion Mullane, who has kindly agreed to be a regular contributor for The CF15 Directory. Ffion will be writing articles, submitting quizzes and word searches for all ages, in the medium of Welsh and in English. Ffions first pages this edition are for children & are related to Wales & St David’s Day. Please do let me know your thoughts about articles/submissions in Welsh; why not contribute a bilingual article yourself? This year is a very exciting one for the UK, with the arrival of the Olympic Games, while it may be too late for many of us to be an Olympic hopeful, it’s never too early to get your children or grandchildren involved and excited about sport. You never know, a little encouragement now may end up meaning gold medals for them in the future! For the rest of us, gold medal glory days may be something we can now only dream of; but getting and staying fit needn’t be a marathon effort. We have such wonderful parks, walks, facilities and classes in the area; it’s not hard to find somewhere to go to get fit. Even a brisk walk along the Taff Trail or up to Castell Coch is enough to get the muscles working & to feel invigorated. A group of people who are doing slightly more than having a gentle stroll are the ladies & gents From South Wales Police, who , for the third year running, are competing in the UK 3 peaks challenge. The team of officers based in the Vale of Glamorgan are headed by Morganstown resident Sgt. Steve King. You can read more about the challenge on page 10 Finally to remind you all, this is your magazine, please do let me know what you think of it.I am always looking for guest writers or people who wish to submit a piece. Do you have a recipe you would like to share, a good news story, article, hints or tips, or just something you would like to say about your community? If so contact me. Enjoy this edition & I look forward to hearing from you! Best Wishes, Joanna

Please mention The CF15 Directory when responding to adverts News from Radyr Primary School: Many thanks for asking me to write a short article for the CF15 Directory. I took up post as headteacher at the start of May 2011 and whilst we have had a busy two terms since, particularly with inspection and improvements to the school grounds, there is a purposeful buzz in and around the school. Radyr Primary is my first headship, following a deputy headship at Pentrepoeth Primary School in Newport, a role as inclusion leader at Llanedeyrn Primary in Cardiff before that, Curriculum Leader at Whitehall Primary School in Bristol, ICT Advisor in Rochdale and music co-ordinator at two schools ‘up North’ following graduation from Bangor University in 1999. I have said it before and don’t mind repeating myself: I have landed on my feet at Radyr Primary School. The school is very fortunate to have such polite and enthusiastic children, hardworking and talented staff and a wealth of support from parents and members of the local community. The 2011 inspection quite rightly praised the school for the wealth of good practice throughout the school in terms of standards, support for individual pupils and our strong sense of community spirit. The inspection team outlined clear areas for development and myself and the school governors are delighted with our progress to date. Our dedicated PTA have been working hard to raise funds for our nature trail and forest area at the top of the field and we are delighted that work has now commenced. In addition, refurbishments to the interior, plans for enhanced provision for the children at breaktimes and exciting developments within the curriculum ensure that the ‘buzz’ continues to grow. We produce our weekly ‘Radyr Report’ every Friday which is published on our school website at www.radyrprm.cardiff.sch.uk. Many thanks to Joanna for asking me to write an article, I hope that this is the start of many RPS inclusions in the CF15 Directory. Jonathan Bussy Headteacher Radyr Primary School

www.cf15directory.com How your County Councillor can help you There are many exciting projects under development in Radyr and Morganstown; I have sent out recently a leaflet on this subject and I provide monthly updates on my work on the local website and send individual copies to those who want it. Highlights for me are the new library, generation of electricity at Radyr Weir, plans to improve footpaths between Sidings and Hailey Park, a floodlit all-weather hockey and football pitch and new sports and learning facilities at our two excellent local primary schools. Of course I also serve the interests of Cardiff as a whole by working on plans for better refuse services, higher recycling rates and much needed resurfacing of our road system. Equally importantly, I assist local residents to interface with Cardiff Council with its 18000 staff and multiplicity of departments. People come to me with, for example, concerns about parking, speeding traffic, planning matters, litter, dog fouling, disabled access to Radyr Station, discourteous cyclists on the Taff Trail, fly tipping and the spread of Japanese Knotweed.

To advertise in The CF15 Directory please call 07989 431716 Intrepid Officers Head for Heights You may recall an article in last year’s April/May edition of The CF15 Directory, when we told you about a group of intrepid South Wales Police officers, based in the Vale of Glamorgan who were taking part in the 3 Peaks Challenge…Well the walk didn’t put them off & they are at it again, & this time there are more of them! The 3peaks last year proved so successful that more officers have volunteered to take part in the gruelling challenge. For those of you who don’t know, the 3 peaks challenge involves travelling to & climbing Snowdon, Scaffell Pike & Ben Nevis, in 24 hours. The event; organised for the 3rd year running, by Morganstown resident Sergeant Steve King, is to raise vital funds for Ty Hafan & Cancer Research Wales. Ty Hafan was established in 1999 to provide respite, palliative and end of life care to children in Wales who suffer from life limiting conditions. Life limiting conditions are those which mean the child or young person is not expected to reach nineteen years of age. Cancer Research Wales was founded in 1966 by Doctor Ken Davies, & since then their achievements for cancer research have been considerable. The research lab based at Velindre Hospital is a centre of excellence for the non-surgical treatment of cancer. Both of these charities rely heavily on the people of Wales to take part in sponsored events such as the 3 peaks, and to make donations so that they can continue their vital work. The officers will be undertaking this difficult task mid-May, starting off from Gwaelod y Garth & heading to Snowdon, with the hope that Snowdon will be scaled & descended early enough for the Scaffell Pike walk to be started while it’s still day light! Ben Nevis will then be walked either in the middle of the night, or at day break! Several members of the team, including Sgt.King, are also planning a trip to scale the giddy heights of Kilimanjaro in 2013, again in aid of charities. Sgt King is looking for contributions for both the SWP 3 peaks challenge this year & for the Kilimanjaro event on 2013, from small personal donations to corporate sponsorship & offers of kit, food & drinks. Many of last year’s sponsors are already on board, including Burnt Tree vehicle hire who have again kindly donated the use of two mini buses. You can find out more about the challenge & how to get involved in either donating or sponsorship by contacting Sergeant King on 07870635765 or by emailing steve. king@south-wales.pnn.police.uk

Please mention The CF15 Directory when responding to adverts THE ROTARY CLUB OF CARDIFF-CITY OF LLANDAFF (Formerly the Rotary Club of Llandaff) Founded 1964

Rotary Clubs are part of a global organisation which was founded over 100 years ago by a small group of business men who enjoyed meeting in each others’ homes on a regular basis to exchange ideas. This simple formula has grown until there are now over a million members who attend regular club meetings and who are free to visit other clubs anywhere in the World. In South Wales, there are over 70 clubs situated around our towns and cities so that on weekdays it is possible to find an active club not too far away from wherever you happen to be. In Cardiff we have 8 fully autonomous clubs which vary in size from 25 members up to about 50 or so. They each produce a wide range of activities of interest to their members and the wider community Llandaff is no exception – members meet at the Churchill’s Hotel in Llandaff on most Tuesdays, either for lunch or an evening meal at times to suit those who can spare an hour or so to catch up with friends. We have over 30 active members. What do we do?-we try very hard to engage with individuals, groups, organisations, businesses to identify where there is a need for help or support. The following examples show how club members offer “Service Before Self ”: • • • • •

Local Community & Vocational services – Collecting food parcels in the run up to Christmas; Foundation and International Services – Contribute to International projects e.g. Water Aid, Eradicate Polio, and Disaster Aid; Youth Opportunities (New Generations) – Providing a range of projects which will give young people experience in e.g. Youth Speaking competitions, RYLA camps, soccer and netball competitions. Membership and Club Services – ensures that the Club operates effectively and produces a programme of sustainable events including a range of Keynote Speakers each month. International & Foundation Service - arranges Speakers and events reflecting the International nature of Rotary International.

The club seeks to encourage new members who are willing to commit some time on a regular basis to help us achieve our objectives. Please contact Club Secretary Peter by E-mail on: llandaffrotary@gmail.com Telephone (H) (029) 20 611 430

Ffion’s Fun Factuals St David's Day is on 1 March. St David's Day is celebrated in Wales on 1 March, in honour of St David (Dewi Sant), the patron saint of Wales. St David (Dewi Sant was a Celtic monk, abbot and bishop, who lived in the sixth century. He spread the word of Christianity across Wales. The most famous story about Saint David tells how he was preaching to a huge crowd and the ground is said to have risen up, so that he was standing on a hill and everyone had a better chance of hearing him. The national emblems of Wales are daffodils and leeks. St David's Day is commemorated by the wearing of daffodils or leeks. Both plants are traditionally regarded as national emblems. There are many explanations of how the leek came to be adopted as the national emblem of Wales. One is that St David advised the Welsh, on the eve of battle with the Saxons, to wear leeks in their caps to distinguish friend from the enemy. Shakespeare mentions in Henry V, that the Welsh archers wore leeks at the battle of Agincourt in 1415. On St David's Day, some children in Wales dress in their national costume, which consists of a tall black hat, white frilled cap and long dress. The national flag of Wales, depicting a fiery red dragon (Y Ddraig Goch) against a green and white background, is also flown. 1. When is St Davids Day? 2. In honour of who is St Dvaids day? 3. What did St David do? 4. What are the national emblems of Wales? 5. What do some children wear on St Davids day? Cafodd Dewi ei wneud yn nawdd sant i ni yng Nghymru bron i fil o flynyddoedd yn ôl. Carrot Cake Recipe There are many recipes for carrot cake, some with fruit some with nuts, & some using lime and mascarpone frosting, & believe me I have made & the family have tried most variations! This recipe is one I have adapted & has come out as a favourite for us, so I thought I would share it with you. It’s a simple recipe, so ideal for making with your children. Ioan loves helping me make this one, as much as he loves eating it! The spices I have listed are to our taste, but please feel free to chop and change to suit your own pallet. Some prefer mostly cinnamon with only a little of the other spices, whilst others like a more gingery hint. Whatever suits you! Ingredients: 250g unsalted butter, softened 250g light brown soft sugar 4 large eggs, zest and juice of 1 orange 170g self-raising flour, sifted 1 heaped tsp baking powder 1 heaped tsp ground cinnamon a pinch of ground cloves a pinch of ground nutmeg ½ tsp ground ginger 250g carrots, peeled and grated

Frosting: 150ml double cream 250g full-fat cream cheese 85g icing sugar, sifted zest and juice of 1 medium sized orange

Preheat the oven to 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4. Grease and line a 22cm-cake tin; use whatever shape suits you, with greaseproof paper. Blend the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy. Beat in the egg yolks one by one, and add the orange zest and juice. Stir in the sifted flour and baking powder, spices and grated carrot and mix together well. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites with a pinch of salt until stiff, and then gently fold them into the cake mix. Pour the mixture into the cake tin and cook in the preheated oven for about 50 minutes until golden and risen. You can check to see if the cake is cooked by putting a clean knife into the centre of the cake, if the knife comes out clean the cake is cooked; if slightly sticky, it needs a bit longer, so put it back in the oven for a few minutes. Leave the cake to cool in the tin for 10 minutes, then turn it out on to a rack and cool for at least an hour. When the cake is cooled, mix the icing sugar, double cream and soft cheese until it forms soft peaks. Then cover the cake with the frosting. Enjoy!

Make your own bird feeder

It’s important for us all to keep our garden birds fed throughout the year so why no need and egg carton, a paper punch and some string. Firstly, cut off the lid of the Thread a piece of string through each corner and tie a knot to stop it from slipping string together in the middle of the carton and tie them together in a knot. Fill your tree in your garden.

Clemenger Dance Works is the dance company of Audrey Clemenger. I originate from Dublin, Ireland. I have lived in Wales for 17 years now and can safely say it is like home from home. Dancing has always been very much a part of my life and is one of my great passions. From a young age I have danced various styles ranging from Latin American, Ballroom to Disco, Jazz, and Tap. I discovered Zumba 2 years ago and with my Dance background and a Fitness Qualification behind me, I decided it was something I would love to share with other people. My first Zumba qualification was taken in early 2011 and since then I have also completed Zumbatomic (Zumba for Children), Zumba Toning and Zumba Gold. Classes in these areas will commence in the near future. Zumba Fitness is a Latin-inspired Dance Fitness which incorporates dance and aerobic elements. Zumba’s choreography spans from Merengue, Salsa, and Mambo to Hip Hop, Reggaeton along with Bollywood and some Belly Dance moves. Zumba provides a great all over body work out using all muscle groups and giving you cardiovascular fitness too. No matter what age you are, what gender you are, what culture you come from, Zumba Fitness is for you. Come along to my class, you will love your new fitness routine; it’s fun and is guaranteed to make you feel amazing.
