To advertise in The CF15 Directory please call 07989 431716 Welcome to the June /July edition of The CF15 Directory It’s been a busy few weeks here at The CF15 Directory, & as always I am indebted to my family, friends & others around me who inspire me, encourage me & help me to get this mag out edition after edition. As well as getting this edition ready, I have been involved with fund raising for The South Wales Police UK 3 Peaks Challenge. You may recall an article in the last edition about a group of officers, led by Morganstown resident Sgt. Steve King, who were raising funds, for the 3rd year running, for Ty Hafan & Cancer Research Wales. I am happy to tell you that the team completed the challenge in 22 hours and 45 minutes, & have raised vital funds for these two amazing charities! A BIG well done to all involved! The CF15 Directory has been a supporter of Radyr charity Autism Puzzles, since its inception last year & it has been my privilege to get to know charity founder;Karen Sullivan. Karen & her team work tirelessly to raise funds & awareness for Autism. Karen is a guest contributor this edition, so you can find out more about Autism Puzzles, & how to get involved in fund raising. They have some fab & fun events coming up, including a zumbathon, & for the more adventurous, & trek to Kilimanjaro! I am always amazed and humbled by the amount of people who despite their own difficulties & the dire state of the economy, are still willing and able to give that bit more to help out for fund raising or raising awareness of charities. I’ve highlighted just 2 groups but there are many more, so Well done to you all & keep up the good work! As always this edition is packed with information for you, a competition for the budding amateur photographer; recipes & more! We also have a very interesting article submitted from Radyr resident Jack Ayles, who is telling us more about out the Rotary Club of Cardiff & how to get involved. The UK has a lot going on over the coming months, with the Queens Jubilee & the Olympics. What better excuse is there to celebrate! So why not get out the bunting & enjoy what is hoped will be a spectacular summer! Best Wishes, Joanna

Jubilee Cupcakes

Ingredients: 150g (5oz) softened butter 150g (5oz) golden caster sugar 3 eggs, beaten 1tsp vanilla extract 2tbsp milk 150g (5oz) self-raising flour

To decorate: 50g (2oz) butter, softened 200g (7oz) icing sugar, sifted ½tsp vanilla extract red food colouring blue food colouring edible silver balls 250g (8oz) white ready-made icing

Method: Preheat oven to gas 5, 190°C, fan 170°C. Line a cup cake tin with cake cases. Beat the butter and caster sugar until it is smooth and creamy. Gradually add the eggs, beating well until the mixture is combined. Using a large metal spoon, fold in the vanilla extract, milk and flour. Using a dessert spoon, place a rounded spoonful in each cake case. Bake for about 15-18 minutes, until brown on top and springy to the touch. Beat the butter, sugar and vanilla extract together. Divide the butter cream into 2 bowls and colour with red or blue food colouring to the desired shade. Place each mixture in a piping bag with a large star-shaped nozzle and pipe on top of the cakes, or use a small palette knife to swirl cream on top. Dot cream with edible silver balls. To make the crowns: dust work surface with icing sugar, roll out and cut a thin strip of ready-made icing. Cut five V shapes along one side, then trim and join the 2 edges and place the crown on top.

www.cf15directory.com Update from Cllr Roderick McKerlich Cardiff Council is now under the control of the Labour Party who had a stunning victory in the recent election; Labour now has 46 out of 75 seats. Obviously this party has a mandate to rule and, after 8 years of being a minority party, they have some significant planned changes. As an early change, the Lord Mayoralty has been significantly changed and downgraded; now the Council will be chaired by a Labour Chair and deputy Chair and they will receive the expense allowances previously given to assist the Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor in attending several hundred public engagements per year. It is not clear how this will work and any change needs to be agreed by the Queen after it has been considered by the Privy Council. I am sorry that this change has been made and I regret that it has been rushed without proper consideration of the process and impact on local charities. In this area of North West Cardiff we need to ensure proper consultation occurs before a new Local Development Plan permits vast swathes of our green belt to be covered in thousands of new houses; given the previously expressed views of serving Labour Councillors this is a real threat. In the meantime I and my party colleagues will continue to press for a major change in our school system to eradicate pockets of underperformance blighting the lives of many school pupils and we will be urging a programme of road resurfacing to start making up for years of neglect. Regards, Rod McKerlich

www.cf15directory.com The Great Outdoors! Radyr Primary School Our caretaker, parent volunteers and pupils have been working extremely hard developing our infant and junior allotments and new raised beds around the school. Mr Thomas (caretaker) has created stunning allotment beds in the grass banks adjacent to the infant playground and also alongside the junior playground. He has also built numerous raised beds for use around the school. Supervised and guided by our two parent volunteers, Mrs Mouncher and Mrs Ashwell, children in Key Stage Two have planted a range of produce from runner beans through to strawberries whilst Foundation Phase children have developed their own allotments and raised beds with the help of our dedicated school staff. Thanks to the hard work of our PTA, the school nature trail and conservation area are now open providing a wealth of opportunity to develop Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship across the school curriculum. The PTA have worked hard throughout the year to create a range of fundraising events such as a Sports Evening hosted by Jonathan Davies, Tom Shanklin and Ieuan Evans, a Rock Evening hosted by Mr Bussy’s band, Christmas Fete, Football Event, Discos, Halloween Homebake and Toy Sale. The trail which comprises of a wooden stage and seating area, conservation area, pond and campfire was opened by past pupil Rhodri Morgan following an Olympic Style procession along the Nature Trail finishing with the lighting of the ceremonial campfire as part of the PTA Summer Family Barbecue. The pupils took part in a competition to design a logo for the trail which was then incorporated into the bench designs. Mr Thomas is currently collecting plastic bottles to create a ‘Pop Bottle Greenhouse’ which will provide further opportunities for pupils to develop their ‘green fingers’. It is hoped that this work, along with the ongoing efforts of our eco and school council will stand us in good stead for assessment towards Green Flag Status in the coming school year.

www.cf15directory.com The CF15 Directory is please to support the British Heart Foundation. In the following article Delyth Lloyd explains how vital organ donation is:The gift of organ donors and their families has helped transform thousands of lives in Wales. Already more than 800,000 people across Wales have joined the Organ Donation Register – each and every one of them sending a message of hope and support to those waiting on the list to receive that vital call that might save their lives. British Heart Foundation (BHF) Cymru and other organisations in Wales work hard to ensure that as many people as possible make their wishes known to loved ones about organ donation and also sign up to the organ donation register. Delyth Lloyd, Public Affairs Manager for British Heart Foundation (BHF) Cymru says: “Sadly 3 people die each day in the UK waiting – or become too ill - to receive a transplant. “As the nation’s heart charity, the BHF has a role to play in increasing the rate of organ donation to make sure that those patients requiring new hearts have the best possible chance of survival. We are also funding research aimed at eliminating the need for heart transplants in the future. “The biggest hurdle to more lives being saved is that four out of ten families reuse for their loved ones’ organs to be donated often because they didn’t know what their wishes were. Making your wishes known means your loved ones don’t have to make the decision for you at a difficult time. “Please talk about your organ donation wishes with your loved ones and if you want to help join the Organ Donor Register. It only takes a few minutes and could save someone else’s life” she added. How to register You can join the NHS Organ Donor Register by: • Filling in a form online • Calling the NHS Donor Line on 0300 123 23 23 • By texting SAVE to 84118 (Lines are open 24 hours a day all year round. Calls are charged at your contracted rate for local calls)

June / July Competition This edition you have the chance to get your picture on the cover of the August / September edition of The CF15 Directory! To be in with a chance of winning this, all you have to do is submit a picture you have taken in or around your garden. It can include your dog asleep on the lawn, your children playing in the garden, or of your flowers/plants, as long as you have taken the pic yourself, have not enhanced it or amended it in any way & it’s been taken within CF15 then its OK! The picture can be in black and white or colour, & it needs to be submitted electronically to info@cf15directory.com. The competition is open to any age group, but not to professional or semiprofessional photographers! The judging panel consist of Joanna, Editor of The CF15 Directory, Jason Roberts, Technical & Web Manager and Professional Photographer Nick Jenkins of Freespirit Images. The closing date is the 15th of July. Here are some tips from Nick, to get that prize winning shot: Tips and Hints Summer is the time to show off the garden at its very best. So many people just grab the camera and snap away. But, as Nick Jenkins suggests, with a little care and thought you can photograph your garden to really show it at its best. Think carefully about what YOU like in your garden - a particular flower or bush. Make it a strong feature of the shot.

info@cf15directory.com Remember, the photograph can be vertical (portrait format) or horizontal (landscape format). If the trees, shrubs and flowers are quite tall then try vertical. Look for strong colours - make them stand out by placing them in the front of the shot. Garden colours are often shown at their best in slightly overcast weather. Bright sunshine can create dark, ugly shadows. Sometimes it pays not to cram in too much, especially with a garden. If the photograph is TOO busy it can confuse the viewer. Less can be more! Take photos of the whole or part of the garden but don't forget to take shots of individual blooms or clumps of flowers too. Try photographing the garden from an upstairs window or a stepladder. An aerial view often allows you to 'separate' parts of the garden which you cannot see an eye level. Why not use your very best shots to turn into a greetings card to send to family and friends? This is a personal gesture which will surely be appreciated. Search the internet for local good quality printers. Lastly, put the camera down and just appreciate what it is about the garden that prompted you to photograph it in the first place! Nick Jenkins

The 2012 Olympic Games The 2012 Summer Olympics are in London. The motto of the London Olympics is 'Inspire a generation'. The Ancient Olympics: The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic Games in the year 776 BC, and had only one event, a sprint. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men. The four-year period between the Olympic Games was called an olympiad. Every four years, for 1,170 years, the Greeks held an Olympics, which continued to grow and change. Many other sports were added, including other races, wrestling, boxing, pentathlon (five events, including the long jump, javelin throw, discus throw, foot race, and wrestling), and equestrian events (events with horses and people, like chariot races and horse races) The Olympic games were banned by the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius II in the year AD 394. The Modern Olympic Games: Over a fifteen hundred years later, Pierre de FrĂŠdy, Baron de Coubertin(a French educator and sportsman) revived the Olympic Games. An all-male Olympic games were held in 1896, in Athens, Greece. The first winter Olympics were held in 1924, in Chamonix, France. The Flag of the Olympic Games: The Olympic flag has five interlocking rings (blue, yellow, black, green, and red) on a white ground. The rings represent the five parts of the world that were joined together in the Olympic movement: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia and Europe. Baron de Coubertin designed the flag of the Olympics in 1913-1914. The Olympic flag was first used in the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. The Olympic flag is paraded during the opening ceremony of each Olympic Games. At the end of an Olympics, the mayor of the host-city presents the flag to the mayor of the next host-city. The flag will remain in the town hall of the next host-city until the next Olympic Games, four years later.

Please mention The CF15 Directory when responding to adverts History of the Olympic Flame: The tradition of the Olympic Flame began during the ancient Olympic Games, over 2700 years ago in Greece. A flame was lit for each Olympics, every four years, and it burned throughout the games. The flame symbolised the death and rebirth of Greek heroes. There was no torch relay in the ancient Olympics. The first torch relay took place at the 1936 games in Berlin, Germany. The Torches of the Olympics: For each Olympics, a new flame is started in the ancient Olympic stadium in Olympia,Greece, using a parabolic mirror to focus the rays of the Sun. This flame begins its Olympic Torch Relay by touring Greece. The flame is normally taken to the country where the games will be held (usually by airoplane). Following that, the flame is then carried around the country where the games are to be held, using a series of torches carried by people running, walking, & riding horses. The last runner uses a torch to light the large Olympic torch which burns throughout the games. The flame is extinguished during the closing ceremony. A new Olympic torch is designed for each of the games. The Olympic Motto: The Olympic motto is, "Citius, Altius, Fortius," which means "Swifter, Higher, Stronger." Olympic Medals: At the Ancient Olympics, a wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head. At the modern Olympics, each first-place winner receives a gold medal, each second-place winner receives a silver medal, and each third-place winner receives a bronze medal. Different medals are designed for each new Olympics. Certificates called victory diplomas are also given to many top winners in each sport.

Rotary Club of Cardiff – City of Llandaff (Formerly Llandaff Rotary Club) Established 1964 President (2011-12): Gerry Ambler. (President, July 1st 2012- June 30th 2013: Malcolm Braun) ROTARY AND THE COMMUNITY - A YOUNG PERSON’S VIEW Question 1: How did you become aware of Rotary? Answer: My cousin invited me to a Rotary Club meeting and meal on board a river restaurant in Christchurch, Hampshire. The company was friendly and welcoming for an evening which was fun and enjoyable. It was some time later that a colleague invited me to come along to his club in Cardiff – again the welcome was fantastic with a group of business people from a wide range of backgrounds. Ages were not an issue and everybody seemed to be enjoying the fellowship. There was a speaker from a charity but there was no pressure to donate. After a few weeks, I was asked if I could spare an hour or so during the week to help with club affairs and it seemed to be a good avenue to go down. Question 2: What was your first impression of Rotary? Answer: A sense of members who were committed to giving “Service before self”. Question 3: What has surprised you most about working with Rotary? Answer: The absolute diversity of the tasks which are regularly dealt with by the club members, not only in the UK but across the world. Question 4: What do you wish that other people knew about Rotary? Answer: You can make a difference to the lives of other people (most of whom you will never meet). It does not cost a fortune to belong and there is an enduring satisfaction in meeting new, like minded people from different backgrounds. Question 5: What would you tell someone who is thinking about joining? Answer: DO IT. Over time you will make lots of friends and enjoy being part of a team, perhaps raise some money and at the end of the day know that you will have made a difference. Question 6: What do you do with your spare time? Answer: Rotary Clubs have a criteria which prioritises commitment to your family, your Business and then to Rotary. Clearly, time spent with my family and friends is important and on occasions, events are planned to include everybody who wishes to be involved. For those active in Business, the club can be surprisingly flexible in accommodating busy peoples’ schedules. Being a member of Rotary is like being part of a huge happy family and it is very much down to being involved to get the most out of it. info@cf15directory.com JA Consultants is a long established business, offering guaranteed, cost effective, solus or shared option distribution services to clients throughout the UK. Established in 1975, the business operates in south Wales. The company has well qualified and strategically placed professional teams, matching existing and future client expectations to a high standard. Services are designed to compliment your existing marketing strategies. Delivered direct to your potential clients premises, the service can be arranged as either 'solus' or as part of a shared drop. This unrivalled service is available at competitive rates. We operate to the highest industry standards and as a result have a satisfied network of clients, situated throughout the UK, including universities, colleges, schools, local authorities, health boards and government departments, local, regional and multinational businesses, companies and organisations. New and existing clients are assured that every effort is made to deliver your business marketing materials safely within an agreed timescale. A high percentage of new clients use us because of dissatisfaction with the low standards of delivery offered by cheap rate individuals or companies who perhaps mix them in with newspapers or other clients’ flyers SO THAT the bundle then becomes identified as spam. “Buyer Beware” is a useful adage to help stamp out dishonest individuals and companies. Our ratings in terms of client satisfaction are between 90 and 100% (over a five year period and approximately 200 clients).
