Kanga Cup Administration

Weather Winter in Canberra in July can be very cold, wet and windy. If a certain field cannot be used due to poor weather or the condition of fields, the McDonald’s Kanga Cup Organising Committee will decide which other grounds may be used.

Fair Play and Respect The McDonald’s Kanga Cup is a football festival which supports the ethos of fair play, sportsmanship, respect and friendship. Unsporting behaviour is not tolerated on or off the field under any circumstances. There is zero tolerance for swearing, use of foul/abusive language, fighting, intimidating or heckling. Persons exhibiting this type of behaviour will be asked to leave the field or premises and possibly the tournament. Coaches, managers, family and friends should encourage players to have fun and be positive regardless of whether they are winning or losing. We hope all participants play in good spirit and respect the rules of the game at all times.

Welcome from Andrew Barr

The Kanga Cup is the largest annual youth football tournament in the Southern Hemisphere and we are very proud to host this festival of football here in the nation’s capital. Canberra is one of Australia’s most active cities and the ACT Government is a passionate supporter of the Kanga Cup and developing grassroots football in our region. While in Canberra, I encourage you to explore Australia’s capital to discover why it offers one good thing after another. Canberra is one of Lonely Planet’s top three cities in the world to visit this year and our family-friendly attractions, ever-evolving food scene and

shopping options will keep you entertained away from the field. If you’re stuck for ideas check out visitcanberra.com.au or pop by the Canberra Region Visitors Centre at Regatta Point. The 2018 Kanga Cup would not be possible without the fantastic support of volunteers and officials. Whether you’re participating, coaching or supporting your team, remember to thank the volunteers and officials involved. I hope you have a fabulous time in Canberra and wish all teams the best of luck. Andrew Barr ACT Chief Minister

Meet the Mosman Football Club

The Mosman Football Club is a proud community based sporting organisation that caters for boys and girls as young as five, right through to the football loving pensioners of the local area. This historic club has been in existence for a long time, celebrating a half-century of football last year. From modest beginnings in 1967, it was Merv Mancer, Dr Kunz and Elizabeth Stuart who were the founders of the club. Currently, the club has just shy of 1500 players in its winter-based competition, and over 1000 in the summer 5-a-side tournament. The club is the largest sporting organisation in Mosman and one of the largest amateur sports clubs in Australia. In 2018, Mosman Football Club will have a large presence in Canberra, fielding no-less than nine teams in the McDonald’s Kanga Cup. With teams across the age group divisions, their two youngest teams will be competing in the U9 Male Plate, and their oldest in the U16 Female Plate. The Mosman coaches are not setting expectations for their players in terms of results instead aiming to play an attractive

8

brand of football that will hopefully lead to an enjoyable tournament for their players, as well as the opposition. The players’ resilience will be tested, playing unfamiliar opposition as well as multiple games throughout the week in a tournament far removed from the Mosman area. The club suspects the tournament will provide a fantastic development and learning opportunity for its coaches and players. In their downtime, the players will be visiting Canberra landmarks such as Questacon, the AIS and the Australian War Memorial. Many of the families won’t be leaving Canberra without challenging each other on the Power Kart Raceway, as it is a good way to let off steam at the end of a massive week. The players have been discussing the tournament with each other since the beginning of the year. With the tournament drawing closer, excitement levels are sure to be rising as the players are keen to showcase all they have learnt so far this year. A pale blue army is set to embark on the Nation’s Capital this coming week.

Youth Referee Academy The 2018 McDonald’s Kanga Cup is just around the corner and as thousands of players get ready to take to the field, so too are the hundreds of referees that will be officiating throughout the week. Along with the Canberra based officials, there will be referees in attendance from New South Wales, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and West Australia. In addition to this, referees from Hong Kong and New Zealand will be crossing the ocean to attend the tournament. Local, interstate and international referees alike will be made up of both males and females, ready and eager to make the tough calls. Local referees will have the opportunity to take part in three pre-tournament training sessions conducted by local referee coaches and experienced referees, with these sessions based on key focus areas as part of the 2018 McDonald’s Kanga Cup Referee Curriculum. Academy referees will take part in an intense training and education program as soon as they touch down in Canberra on the Saturday prior to the tournament, and all McDonald’s Kanga Cup referees will receive coaching support from a team of 50 referee coaches throughout the week. In this year’s edition of the tournament, the Referee Academy is aiming to provide academy referees with new and unique learning opportunities that they may not be able to access within their local association. It is hoped that these referees will share their experiences from the McDonald’s Kanga Cup and all that they have learned with referees in their respective local associations. Always remember to be respectful to your match officials during the tournament, shake their hands after your matches and bear in mind that they are here for the same reason as you - to have a good time!

We chat with

Pararoos star Ben Roche

KC: How did you get into Football growing up? BR: I started playing when I was 6 after a few school friends got involved. I was pretty terrible but loved being in a team. KC: Once you started playing, how did you work your way up to the national setup/Pararoos? BR: When I was 10 or 11 I saw the football at the Sydney Paralympics and was instantly hooked. It became a goal of mine pretty quickly. Then when I was 12 I was able to make contact and get involved in the setup. There was no real pathway in Victoria at the time so I had to create it. I was thrown in the deep end and was lucky enough to represent Australia at 15. KC: Before a game, do you have any rituals/superstitions that you go through? BR: I try and listen to music and just get my head in the game. I try and avoid to many rituals because I get a little worried that one day I won’t be able to do that ritual and it could ruin the game!

With the Pararoos movie recently released to great acclaim, we spoke to star player Ben Roche (also of Summerland Football) about how he got into football, the movie and the World Cup. 20

KC: How proud are you to finally see the Pararoos movie come to light? BR: It’s insane to watch yourself on the big screen, and extremely daunting to share such personal stories. I am really excited about what doors it may open for the Pararoos and for anyone with a disability wanting to play football. KC: Do you hope the movie helps show that there is a football pathway for people with a disability, to those who might not know?

BR: Absolutely, the film touches on things from competing at the top, mental health and living with a disability. The best thing I think about is that it will create awareness. We need to let people to know there are opportunities available. At the same time we need to start the conversation on inclusion and accessibility. KC: With Summerland Football you've worked with the McDonald’s Kanga Cup before, are you excited to be back again this year? BR: Kanga Cup is one of my favourite times of year (apart from the cold). Such a great opportunity to play and develop but also be with your mates and meet incredible people from around Australia. KC: Any advice or words of wisdom for kids competing in the McDonald’s Kanga Cup this year? BR: Just enjoy it, make the most of each game. Talk to other teams and clubs and find out what kind of things they are up to so you can push yourself. KC: Who is your tip to win the World Cup? BR: Australia of course, but if for some reason we don’t maybe Portugal.

Thank a volunteer!

Every year in Canberra, the McDonald’s Kanga Cup Organising Committee enter ‘full-steam ahead’ mode as the Southern Hemisphere’s largest junior football tournament rolls into town.

Behind the scenes, the tournament is put together not only by the committee, but also with the assistance of a wonderful group of volunteers. From venue managers to results managers, helpers in the McDonald’s Kanga Cup office and more, the volunteers are a vital part of the tournament every year. In 2018 the volunteers will number over 40 people, and be visible around the grounds in their event jackets. They’re all friendly and easy to approach, so if you have the time stop by, say hello and let them know what a good job they’re doing!
