Cover Photo: Lawrence Atkin FINALS TIME! After a huge weekend of semi-finals in the PS4 NPL Men’s, it is crunch time for the Women this time out with two big matches. Woden-Weston and Canberra FC will meet on Saturday afternoon in a sudden-death encounter at Woden Park and for a spot in the Preliminary Final. The next day, it is the Qualifying Final, as resounding Premiers Belconnen United face second-placed Gungahlin United at McKellar Park, in a repeat of the fixture that has thrown up some scintillating matches this season. On the Men’s side of the draw, Gungahin United will look to carry momentum from their 3-0 thrashing of Canberra FC into a monster Preliminary Final against Canberra Olympic. Olympic’s penalty shootout loss to Belconnen will no doubt be a motivator for them, and you can catch that clash LIVE on BarTV Sports from 4pm Saturday.
Big Woden win sends Gungahlin through By Matt Nicoletti Gungahlin United 3 (Rinaudo 9’, O’Dwyer 46’, Naumoski 69’) def. Canberra FC 0 Gungahlin United set up a blockbuster Preliminary Final clash with Canberra Olympic after a convincing 3-0 victory over Canberra FC in their semi-final on Sunday. A wet afternoon cleared as kick off approached and the sides got underway with United looking to build on their two wins over Canberra FC in the regular season and their opponents aiming to make a splash in finals from fourth as they did last season. CFC began the game on the front foot, forcing United deep and leaving them looking for opportunities to counter-attack but were unable to make the most of their early chances. That cost them early too, as Michael Rinaudo took off down the right wing in the ninth minute, cut inside his defender and hit a rasping effort past Sam Brown in goals to give his side the lead. Canberra FC continued to control the possession even after the goal, but in similar vein to last week they were unable to create clear cut chances despite seeing lots of the ball. United continued to poke for chances on the break as they remained resolute in defence, and held out well until the break where they carried in their one-goal advantage. That didn’t last long though, as the half got off to the worst possible start for already-trailing Canberra FC. United broke almost straight from kick off and Jason O’Dwyer was sent racing through to finish calmly and extend the advantage to 2-0. Now forced to chase the game, Marko Vrkic’s side pushed once more but were unable to finish off chances. Julian Borgna skewed a header wide and a number of other opportunities went begging as Gungahlin held firm under the weight of pressure and with 20 minutes to go they sealed the match. Sam Brown got down low to save an initial effort but no one was on hand to clean up in defence, leaving Misko Naumoski to pounce on the rebound and tap home for 3-0.

Quickfire double keeps United in second spot By Mitchell Keenan Gungahlin United 2 (Grace Field 69’, Darby Whiteley 70’) drew. Canberra FC 2 (Hayley McLachlan 24’, Marcia Wallis 51’) Two goals in two second half minutes earned Gungahlin United a 2-2 draw with Canberra FC and booked them a spot in the PS4 NPL Women’s major semi-final. The early stages of the game were tough, as both sides jostled for possession in the rain and snow, but Canberra FC were quick to take charge, creating a number of good chances in the opening stages. As Canberra FC pressed forward, Gungahlin looked to find space in behind their opponents on the counter attack, but Mark Risteski’s side looked determined to pinch second place from Diego Iglesias’ and his charges. Canberra FC were rewarded for their early dominance in the 24th minute, finding a goal through Hayley McLachlan, who took the ball on a surging run through the middle and finished into the bottom left from the top of the box. Canberra FC came into the second half with intensity, while Gungahlin continued to look flat, and the visitors extended their lead just six minutes in, as Marcia Wallis picked up the ball out wide and put a well-weighted chip over Eleni Haridemos in goals. Just as started to look like Canberra FC would comfortably see out the game, Gungahlin pulled a goal back in the 69th minute through Grace Field, who popped up in the box from a free kick and flicked home from close range. Less than a minute later, Iglesias’ side levelled the game through a quick fire counter attack, with Whiteley picking up the ball out wide and running it into the box to finish into the bottom left corner. Canberra FC resumed their attacking pressure late into the game, but a winner eluded Risteski’s side after a number late chances from Jones were put agonisingly wide.
