This weekend sees us reach the business end of the Playstation4 National Premier Leagues Men’s Capital Football competitions, with two massive semi-finals on the cards. Canberra Olympic will meet Belconnen United at Deakin Stadium on Saturday at 4pm, LIVE on BarTV Sports. The winner of that match will go directly through to the Grand Final, while the defeated side will have a second chance in the preliminary final. There, they will meet the victor of Gungahlin United and Canberra FC, who will meet for the second week in a row at Woden Park on Sunday. Keep an eye on our social media channels and the Live Blog for updates on the finals! In the Women’s, second place is coming down to this weekend with Gungahlin United and Canberra FC set to square off at Kaleen. The winner will get a second chance in finals, and the loser will face a plucky Woden-Weston side in the first round.
United double up against struggling CFC By Matt Nicoletti Gungahlin United 1 (Jack Green 32’) def. Canberra FC 0 A first half header from Jack Green has given Gungahlin United a final round win over Canberra FC and a boost into fourth on the Playstation4 National Premier Leagues table. The visitors already had a finals spot sewn up, but this was set to be a make or break game for Gungahlin’s finals spot until Tuggeranong’s shock loss to Monaro the day before. With both sides already secure the only thing riding on the game was fourth spot but the teams still came out of the blocks determined to get a result. Gungahlin looked to hold on the ball and force their opponents back, and Canberra FC initially seemed happy to sit deep and play out on the counter. Kofi Danning had the first real chance of the game after 12 minute for Canberra FC as he cut inside and cracked a shot over Jason Denham that grazed the crossbar, before he had another 10 minutes later. The forward turned his marked and fired at goal but Denham was equal to the task and saved brilliantly to keep scores level. While they continued to pressure, the visitors were unable to find a way through, and they were punished for some lacklustre defending just after the half hour mark. A United corner was swung in from the left and Green ghosted in criminally unmarked from the back post to head home emphatically. That goal took the hosts into the break a goal up and cruising, while Marko Vrkic’s side were left to rue a number of missed chances. The second half saw much of the same as Canberra FC began the search for an equaliser, pushing forward in numbers to pressure the United defence. They came close too, denied only by the woodwork and an outstanding performance from Denham in goals. United threatened on the break a number of times as the clock wound down, trying to expose a stretched visiting defence but they also could not find a way through.

Belconnen continue march to finals with home win over Woden-Weston Belconnen United 4 (Maddy Whittall 16’, Michaela Day 58’, Jessie Williams 85’, Jasmine Maguire 90+4’) def. Woden-Weston 1 (Laura Vandenbroucke 68’) Belconnen United reaffirmed their home dominance in the PS4 NPL Women’s competition on Saturday as a busy second half helped them to a 4-1 win over WodenWeston. United pressed from the start looking for an opening, and found one as Maddy Whittall went racing in behind the defensive line after 10 minutes. However, she was clipped outside the box by Celina Gayer and the defender was sent off with a straight red card in the worst possible start for the visitors. The resulting free kick was sent over the bar, and Nat Lacey was on hand minutes later in the Wanderers goal to save well from Jasmine Maguire’s effort. The visitors could only hold out for so long though and it was Whittall who opened proceedings, this time beating the defence before finishing well past Lacey on the angle. The difference remained only one goal at half-time, but Whittall was barged over in the box by Iesha De Andrade 12 minutes into the second stanza, and Michaela Day stepped up to hammer home the penalty and double United’s advantage. But the visitors were the next to make their mark, and as Laura Vandenbroucke’s effort squirmed through the arms of Elouise Ford in goals it looked as though Woden-Weston might have got themselves back into the match. The final twenty minutes was poised to be pivotal, and the Wanderers looked to push up the field and pressure their opponents on the ball as they chased an equalising goal. But five minutes from time, Jessie Williams delivered what was likely the knockout blow, curling in a fantastic effort from outside the box past Lacey to restore Belconnen’s two-goal buffer. And deep in stoppage time Jasmine Maguire netted a fourth to deliver a resounding win on the scoreboard, but one that was not quite so pretty on the pitch.
