Olivera: Wanderers have turned the corner Woden-Weston PS4 NPL Coach Tony Olivera believes his side has ‘turned the corner’, after a tough start to the season ended with wins over Monaro and the FFA Centre of Excellence in recent weeks. The Wanderers began the season with a 3-1 loss to the Centre of Excellence, but kicked off the second half of the campaign on two weeks ago with a hard-fought 2-1 victory at the AIS, instilling belief in Olivera’s side. That win came two weeks after their 5-0 win over Monaro in Round 8, a result that Olivera sees as the turning point for his young side. “I think the boys turned a corner against Monaro,” he said. “Where all the frustration from bad luck the weeks before culminated in a really good win and really good performance against Monaro. “Then we actually matched that performance against Tigers for about 70 minutes, going in at half-time 2-1, and basically dominating most of the first half.” Olivera’s side went on to lose the match against Tigers 4-2 in a hectic second half, but says his side now have belief after Thursday’s win, having started the season unsure of where they were at. “At the beginning of the year they didn’t have the belief,” Olivera said. “A lot of these youngsters have come in from U/20’s or Capital League, and some of them had question marks over whether they could compete in the NPL.” “But now most of them like Daniel Crkovski, Olaide [Yinka-Kehinde], Will Liston, they now believe they can compete in the NPL. Crkovski has been a livewire up front thus far, with seven goals in ten games to sit fifth on the top scorers table, and the Wanderers have already scored as many goals so far as they did the entire 2016 season. “He started off a bit quiet,” Olivera said of the forward. “But him scoring goals has also lifted the team, and he had to step up with the hamstring injury to Olaide too.” “But Danny has definitely been valuable to the team, and he is also a very nice guy. He is a very loyal guy and I can see big things happening for him in the next half of the year.”

Jones’ late strike steals point for Canberra FC Woden-Weston FC 2 (Rachel Crittenden 36’, 45’) drew. Canberra FC 2 (Grace Gill 25’, Chantel Jones 82’) A late strike from Chantel Jones rescued a point for Canberra FC at Woden Park on Sunday, as the battle for fourth place with Woden-Weston got tighter with a 2-2 draw. Both sides struggled to impose themselves early as they looked to settle in, but the visitors created chances early as Jones through ball almost found the feet of Marcia Wallis through on goal. Diarna Genovesi had a golden chance after seven minutes as Kate Thornton found her with a great low cross, but the forward had the ball caught up in her feet with the goal begging, and the Wanderers defence cleared the danger. Moments later Cassia McGlashan struck the upright for the hosts as they pushed, and the contest developed into a see-sawing battle. Canberra FC found the breakthrough as they were awarded a penalty, and Grace Gill made no mistake as she fired home past Nat Lacey in goals. Just ten minutes later though the Wanderers were awarded a spot-kick of their own, and Crittenden smashed her penalty into the roof of the net to square the ledger with ten minutes until the half. The half appeared to be petering out with scores level until the hosts were awarded a free-kick in a reasonable position outside the box, but Crittenden made the most of it as her driven, swerving strike beat Natasja Vasta and buried in the back of the net for a halftime lead. Canberra FC came out of the half on the attack and looking for an equaliser. WodenWeston initially sought to match them but soon dropped deeper as the visitors pressure increased. Jones controlled much of the play in midfield as she looked to open passing lanes up, but the hosts defended astutely and clogged Canberra FC’s attacking options. Thornton continued to provide a threat down the left for the visitors while Lauren Allen was excellent at the back in the second half for Woden-Weston. But with eight minutes to go in regulation Jones gathered the ball outside the box, sidestepped, and then fired a low drive right past a diving Lacey and into the bottom corner to set up a tense finish. However neither side could find a breakthrough in the dying minutes, and the result keeps Canberra FC one point ahead of their opponents in the battle for fourth spot.

Canberra Olympic into National By Mitchell Keenan Canberra Olympic have qualified for a second successive Westfield FFA Cup, beating Tuggeranong United 2-0 at Deakin Stadium on Saturday. PS4 NPL ladder leaders Olympic put in a dominant performance, and Robbie Cattanach’s brace saw Frank Cachia’s squad come out on top to put them into the round of 32 in the national competition. After a high intensity start from both sides, Olympic fired the first warning shot, with Tom McLachlan sending in a curling effort that didn’t test Tom Barton in goals. Sean Murphy’s side looked to absorb Olympic’s high pressing game, as Tuggeranong searched for space in behind the NPL leaders using the pace of Aisosa Ihegie and Nikolaos Kalfas on the counter attack. A strong Olympic side continued to apply pressure, and after a disallowed goal from Stephen Domeneci in the 12th minute, last year’s qualification final winners broke the deadlock after 15 minutes, as Robbie Cattanach snuck a perfectly struck free kick just inside the left post to put his side ahead. League top scorer Stephen Domeneci continued to trouble the Tuggeranong defence, but the attacker was ruled offside for yet another disallowed goal after 23 minutes. Tuggeranong’s best chance came in the 28th minute following a number of set pieces for the side, as Andrew Slavich went up for a close range header and was denied only by the Olympic crossbar. Moments later, Daniel Roberts fired in a well-struck long range effort, but Konstantinou pulled out a top-draw save to preserve
al Round again after Cup win Olympic’s lead. The second half began with both sides looking to get an early hold after the break, but it was Olympic who continued to hold sway, frustrating their opponents with their build up play through the middle of the field. After a number of missed opportunities, Cattanach popped up again, linking up with Jeremy Habtemariam with a silky one-two and calmly taking the ball past Barton; firing home to hand his side a two goal cushion in the 81st minute and put Olympic back into the FFA Cup National round for the second year in a row. Frank Cachia’s side will now look forward to the round of 32 draw, as Olympic hope to build on the legacy left from last year’s cup run, when they finally bowed out to Sydney FC 3-0 in the semi-final.
