Dominant Domenici rescues win for Olympic Belconnen United 1 (Daniel Fabrizio 54’) def. by Canberra Olympic 2 (Stephen Domenici 79’, 86’) By Matt Nicoletti Canberra Olympic’s undefeated run in the PS4 NPL Capital Football continued on Saturday night, as a brace from Stephen Domenici helped complete a come-from behind win over Belconnen United. The match started as a physical encounter and Zac Maybury, Dustin Wells and Nathan Megic were all booked within the space of a few minutes early on in the half. United’s Taylor Beaton also picked up a yellow as the pace of the game lifted, but both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances on a fresh night at McKellar Park. Angelo Konstantinou saved well from Daniel Fabrizio’s strong effort to keep scores level, and the sides went into half-time goalless. Nine minutes after the break though the undermanned hosts went ahead, as Konstantinou could only parry Jason Ugrinic’s drive into the path of Fabrizio to fire home and take the lead. Sam Smith had the next great chance of the match, but was unable to extend the host’s advantage as he smacked the ball over the bar and out. Olympic tried to force their way back into the game but Finn Jurak was initially up to the task as he made a couple of good saves to keep the visitors at bay in the second half. But Olympic’s attacking pressure continued to build, and when Domenici went scurrying in behind the defence, Jurak’s crude challenge missed the ball and brought the forward down, resulting in a spot-kick. Domenici brushed himself off before burying the penalty in the corner, and with ten minutes to go scores were level again. And shortly after Domenici gave his side the lead with a brilliant strike. Finding space in the box with the loose ball, Domenici pivoted and hit the ball brilliantly, curling it around the outstretched arm of Jurak to nestle just inside the left upright. United tried in vain to hit back and level the game in the dying minutes but were unable to land a telling blow. The Blue Devils now sit level on points in fourth with Gungahlin United, while Olympic pushed their lead over the Centre of Excellence to six points.

Vidmar stunner seals the deal for the Academy Canberra United Academy 2 (Aiofe Colvill 58’, Mikayla Vidmar 82’) def. Woden-Weston 1 (Laura Vandenbroucke 49’) By Mitchell Keenan The Canberra United Academy cemented their position in 4th with a dramatic comeback win over the Woden Weston Wanderers at Hawker Enclosed on Sunday. A thrilling second half saw Woden Weston take an early lead, before the CUA fought back and found two unanswered goals, including an unbelievable effort from Mikayla Vidmar late in the game, to claim an important three points at their home ground. The Academy were first to test their opponents resolve, applying a great deal of early pressure but Isabel Mulhall was unable to convert from close range, firing over in the sixth minute. Woden Weston looked lively at the other end, finding some gaps in behind the CUA defence but the home side held strong. The two sides continued to attack in an end to end affair, and the CUA came close with a silky onetwo between Laura Hughes and Aoife Colvill, but the striker’s effort failed to test Nat Lacey in goals. The Wanderers were unlucky not to find the first goal when Lotta Raap found herself clean through, but Sabrina Sanchez was quick to come out and make a solid save. Moments later, Lacey made a great save of her own to deny the pacey Jasmine Genovesi from netting her 13th goal of the campaign. Both sides came out firing in the second half, and Woden Weston claimed the game’s first goal just four minutes in when Rachel Crittenden carved out some space in the box and cut back to Laura Vandenbroucke to poke home after 49 minutes. The Academy reacted sharply, eagerly hunting for an equaliser and finding one just nine minutes later in the 58th minute, as Colvill fired a strong into the far left corner across Lacey in goals. CUA substitute goalkeeper Olivia Riddel looked sharp in keeping her side level after coming on, clearing a dangerous ball in by Crittenden from a free kick, and Wanderers shot-stopper Lacey continued to make her mark on the game with an incredible save to deny Colvill in the 69th minute. Colvill was unlucky not to give her side the lead in the 75th minute, striking the crossbar with a curling free kick from out wide. The home side took a late lead in the 82nd minute, when central defender Vidmar went on a dazzling run and fired a long effort into the top left hand corner, leaving Lacey with no chance. The visitors pushed hard for a late equaliser, but their efforts were to no avail as the CUA ran out winners in the thrilling encounter.
