Cover Photo: Lawrence Atkin Welcome back to Round 16 of the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Capital Football and Round 18 of the PlayStation 4 National Premier League Women’s Capital Football. The top four race in the PS4 NPL Men’s is coming down to the wire with second to seventh separated by only six points with three weeks of the season left. Our Live streamed match this weekend is a late one, as Tuggeranong host Woden-Weston at Greenway at 7:50pm on Saturday night. If you can’t get to the ground make sure you tune in on Youtube or Facebook! In the PS4 NPL Women’s, Belconnen United will have the chance to wrap up another premiership this weekend with a point against Canberra FC, but this weekend’s hosts blew neighbours Canberra Olympic out of the water last weekend to show that they won’t be lying down. This weekend promises to be massive as we hit the run in, so stay tuned to our media channels for all the news!
Gungahlin keep foot in finals door with home win Gungahlin United 2 (Jason O’Dwyer 59’, Augustine Bangura 61’) def. FFA Centre of Excellence 0 By Matt Nicoletti Gungahlin United claimed a crucial three points on Sunday as they defeated the FFA Centre of Excellence at home to remain in finals contention. The first half played out as a back and forth forty-five minutes, with neither side able to fully gain the upper hand or create many chances. United had the best chance of the opening stages as a low cross found Jason O’Dwyer with the goal looming, but the forward’s foot was just shy of the ball as it came to him. The hosts looked to use their physicality to their advantage against the younger Centre of Excellence side, but the visitors held up well under the body pressure and matched United across the ground. The remainder of the half continued in the same fashion, and the two sides went into the break goalless ahead of an important second half for both sides. The second half began in a similar vein to the first, but after 14 minutes of the period the hosts found the opener to take a crucial lead. This time it was through a well weighted cross to O’Dwyer again, and he made no mistake this time as he leapt up to direct a towering header into the bottom corner of Jordan Griffiths’ goal. And it took just a further two minutes for United to double their advantage through 18year old Augustine Bangura. The youngster collected an errant pass from the defence, turned sharply and then fired straight past Griffiths into the bottom corner to extend the lead with 30 minutes to play. The visitors pushed ahead in search of a way back into the match, but were largely held at bay by a determined Gungahlin outfit seeking to keep their finals hopes alive. The half ran out with both sides trading half chances, but neither could make any more changes to the scoreline as the match finished in a 2-0 home win.

Canberra FC seal finals football with big win Canberra FC 8 (Shaquille Chong 5’, 63’, Chantel Jones 23’, 36’, 42’ 50’, Grace Gill 59’, 88’) def. Canberra Olympic 2 (Ashleigh Clarke 22’, Nat McCann 52’) Four goals from Chantel Jones helped Canberra FC confirm their spot in the finals race in a thumping 8-2 victory over Canberra Olympic at Deakin Fields on Sunday afternoon. The home side got off to the perfect start after just five minutes as Jones played in Shaquille Chong who calmly put her shot away into the bottom corner. Jones was then called for offside as she raced through shortly after as they turned the screws on Olympic. Kailey Tonini held up well in goals for Olympic, saving first from Alice Churchill and then Krista Hagen in quick succession. Those saves proved big for Olympic, as the visitors equalised in the 22nd minute. A looping corner was not dealt with effectively by Madeline Morton in goals, and Ashleigh Clarke pounced on the loose ball to fire it home and restore parity for Olympic. That would last only seconds though, as Jones grabbed her first goal from the kick-off, catching Tonini off guard and lobbing her from the centre circle. The first half continued as a back and forth affair, although the hosts had the upper hand, with Siena Senatore roving the midfield for Olympic mopping up loose balls and defending well. Bridget Wright had a good chance for Canberra FC only to see it well saved low by Tonini, but Jones gave her side the lead soon after as Grace Gill played her in and she cannoned her shot off the crossbar and in. Chong had another effort saved well too but it was in vain as Jones completed her hat trick minutes before the break, heading home a bouncing ball that was not dealt with in the Olympic box. After leading 4-1 at half-time it took only four minutes to extend the advantage for Canberra FC, and it was Jones again as she scored her fourth with a lovely chip over Tonini as she raced through on goals. Six minutes later Olympic pulled one back, this time again from a set-piece as Morton spilt the ball and Nat McCann was on hand to rifle it home and cut the margin to three. From there though it was all Canberra FC for the final 35 minutes, as Gill grabbed a goal with a clean finish before Chong notched her brace four minutes later. With time winding down in the match Gill found space in the box to fire into the back of the net again and seal the score line at 8-2.
