Cover Photo: Lawrence Atkin Welcome back to Round 17 of the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Capital Football and Round 19 of the PlayStation 4 National Premier League Women’s Capital Football. With this the penultimate Round of the Men’s competition, it is all to play for in the chase for Finals. Tigers FC have a must wingame against Belconnen if they are to stay in the hunt, while Canberra FC have a tough clash against the Centre of Excellence and Tuggeranong United will keep fighting as they take on Canberra Olympic. Belconnen United claimed the inagural Playstation4 National Premier Leagues Women’s title last weekened in their 1-0 win (page 12) and will look to rest players this weekend having played in the cup midweek. With the top 4 makeup decided but positions not defined, there are some big matches on this weekend. Keep ane eye on our media networks for all the news as it comes in from the grounds.
Tuggies keep finals flame alive with Saturday night win Tuggeranong United 4 (Fernando Jorquera 21’, 48’, Cam Doherty 52’, Aisosa Ihegie 66’) def. Woden-Weston 1 (Dean Tomeski 44’) Tuggeranong United picked up a crucial three points to keep their finals hopes alive with a 4-1 win over Woden-Weston at Greenway on Saturday night. A cagey opening on a cold night saw neither side press too far forward, however the hosts began to take control of the match and assert themselves as the quarter-hour mark approached. And it was a seemingly distant set piece that gave them the lead, as Chilean forward Fernando Jorquera put an absolute rocket past the wall and into the back of the net from all of 30 metres after 21 minutes of play. United continued to press the visitors looking to double their advantage, but were unable to make their final ball count as they were turned away a number of times by the defence. It cost them just before half-time as the visitors struck back; Dean Tomeski tapping home from close range after an earlier header struck the woodwork from a good cross. Level at the break, it only took for minutes into the second half for Tuggies to regain the lead. Alex Oloriegbe burst through the defence and was brought down by a late tackle inside the box, and the referee pointed to the spot immediately. Jorquera calmly stepped up to convert the spot kick and complete his brace, and leave Tuggeranong in control of the match. And it only took a further four minutes for them to double the advantage as Cameron Doherty’s header crept across the line and was flagged a goal. The match began to heat up as tensions flared, but it remained under control as the hosts cruised on. Aisosa Ihegie scored the final goal of the match with 23 minutes to play as he got on the end of Oloriegbe’s cross to tuck home and seal the match for the hosts. It leaves Tuggeranong in the fourth eligible finals spot ahead of a big match against Canberra Olympic on Sunday while Woden-Weston look to get back on track against Monaro.

Timely Jalocha strike lands inaugural PS4 NPLW title Canberra FC 0 def. by Belconnen United 1 (Nicole Jalocha 45’) Belconnen United claimed their seventh straight Premiership thanks to Nicole Jalocha’s goal on the stroke of half-time getting them across the line against Canberra FC. In tough conditions at windy Deakin Stadium, both sides got off to a cagey start. Jessie Williams had a good chance for Belconnen after four minutes as Ivana Galic’s defensive header fell into her path and she raced on to the ball but her chip attempt was far too heavy and skied well over the bar. Bridget Wright had an early chance for the hosts too but her shot was saved well by Klara Manenica in the United goal, and the two teams both struggled to string together passes as the wind played havoc with the ball. Chantel Jones took her place between the sticks for Canberra FC in this match rather than in midfield, where she was sorely missed as neither side could find the ascendancy. However, she did well in goals, claiming the high ball and commanding her 18-yard area well under pressure. Just as it looked like the sides would head into the break goalless, Jalocha pounced on a careless touch in the Canberra FC backline and raced away to beat Jones at her near post and give the visitors a one-goal lead going into the interval. The second half was a very similar affair to the first, particularly early, with Canberra FC pushing for an equaliser and United looking to poke back on the counter attack. Chloe Callaghan was looking strong up front as she pressured the home defence, while Wright and Krista Hagan were doing the same up the other end but unable to find a way through as disciplined Belconnen backline. Chances were few and far between as conditions made the game tough going, and with rain setting in things did not much better deep in the second half. The second half petered out scrappily and the final whistle blew to hand United the inaugural Playstation4 National Premier League Women’s Capital Football Premiership with three rounds still to play.
