Game. On. 2017. The official matchday program of the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Capital Football Season 2017

Cover Photo: Lawrence Atkin It all comes down to this. The final week of the Playstation 4 National Premier Leagues Men’s Capital Football kicks off this weekend, with Tuggeranong United and Canberra FC locked in a race for the final spot in the top four. Tuggeranong need to rebound from a heavy loss to Canberra Olympic last weekend when they face an improving Monaro side on Saturday. If they win, the deciding match will be Gungahlin United v Canberra FC on Sunday, streamed live from GEO on BarTV Sports. A point will be enough for Gungahlin to progress but how they play remains to be seen. In the PS4 NPL Women’s, there is a three-way battle developing for second place and a spot in the major semi-final. Canberra FC, Gungahlin United and Woden-Weston are all battling, sepearated by just a few points. Keep an eye on all our media this weekend for updates from a huge weekend of football.

United & Grbesa end Tigers finals hopes at McKellar Belconnen United 1 (Grbesa 73’) def. Tigers FC 0 A narrow home win tightened Belconnen United’s grip on a major semi-final spot and ended Tigers FC’s hopes of playing finals for 2017. Matt Grbesa’s second half goal was enough to give the hosts three points in a scrappy encounter and lift them into outright second on the table. The game got off to a patchy start as visiting goalkeeper Francis Bangweni appeared to cramp up a number of times, and was replaced by Jack Miller early on in the match. Michael Kita went down behind play not long after as well and was substituted, leaving Tigers in an awkward position with only one replacement remaining for the next 70 minutes. The visitors had a good chance just before the half hour mark that was cut short by an offside decision, and Thomas James looked dangerous for them whenever he touched the ball, forcing Finn Jurak into a good save minutes later. Neither side held back in their tackles, with the game slowed down by constant whistling of fouls and the contest threatened to escalate at times but was kept in check well. Jason Ugrinic had a big chance for United on the cusp of half-time, but substitute keeper Miller continued a stellar performance with a good save to keep his side level headed into the interval. Ugrinic looked dangerous on the other side of half-time too as he made headway into the box, but United were still unable to find a way through as the emotion in the match went up a notch. And with just under 20 minutes to go, Tigers woes were compounded as they were reduced to ten men following Bradley Moore’s red card. That dismissal proved costly two minutes later; a Belconnen corner floated in from the left found Grbesa and his looping header went back across goal and into the far corner to take the lead. Tigers were forced to chase the game but struggled having already gone a man down, and were unable to find an equaliser as a fiery encounter petered out. Tigers will look to finish their season strong at home to Woden-Weston next weekend, while United can seal second place when they take on the FFA Centre of Excellence on Saturday.

United close gap to second with controlled win over Tuggeranong at Kaleen Gungahlin United 3 (Whiteley 16’, 38’, A. Palombi 78’) def. Tuggeranong United 1 (Jensen 47’) Gungahlin United jumped right into contention for second place in the league with a 3-1 win over Tuggeranong United at Kaleen on Sunday afternoon. The hosts started the game well but could not break down the visiting defence, as both sides struggled to get into an early rhythm. But Gungahlin had the first big chance of the game after 13 minutes, as a corner dropped into the box and was not claimed and Alex Martens sprayed it over the bar with a quickly taken effort. Gungahlin had a penalty shout waved away moments later too, but it didn’t take long for them to take the lead. Darby Whiteley was set away down the left wing in the 16th minute, and steadied herself before firing into the far corner to go up 1-0. Tuggeranong continued to misplace passes and hand possession back to their opponents, and it would cost them again seven minutes before the break. Maddy Perceval headed a chance from a corner onto the bar and after one follow up effort was saved, but Whiteley was on hand to tap home the next effort and give her side a two-goal buffer going into the break. Tuggeranong threw themselves right back into the mix only two minutes after the break, as Emily Jensen rifled home a shot from inside the box after the ball rebounded to her from an earlier shot. The half-time introduction of Meg McLaughlin helped with their bright start, as they began to see more of the ball and apply pressure to the Gungahlin defence, something they had struggled to do earlier on in the match. Both sides tussled as they looked to gain the upper hand, and slowly Gungahlin began to wrestle back the ascendancy. Ash Palombi smoked a shot over from a tight angle with half an hour to go, before a couple of other chances went begging soon after But with 12 minutes to go Palombi sealed the encounter with a well-taken finish from close range after the ball was loose in the box. There was still time for a chance at both ends however neither side could add to the score line as 90 minutes ticked over.
