Game. On. 2017. The official matchday program of the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Capital Football Season 2017

Welcome back to Round 7 of the PlayStation 4 National Premier Leagues Capital Football and Round 8 of the PlayStation 4 National Premier League Women’s Capital Football.

Last weekend saw Canberra FC get back on the winners list and keep their spot at the top of the NPL, while Belconnen United stamped their authority on the NPL Women’s competition with a massive win over the Canberra United Academy. This weekend there will only be four NPL Men’s fixtures, as the Riverina Rhinos will be engaged in cup duties on Saturday rather than NPL as they take on Weston-Molonglo in Griffith for a place in the Federation Cup Quarter Finals. The NPL Women’s has now gone through a full cycle, and returns to the Round 1 Matchups this weekend with a number of teams undoubtedly looking to reverse the scores from the last time they met their opponents.

United bounce back from Cup drama

Tuggeranong United 1 (Amilio Kishta 73’) def. by Belconnen United 4 (Phil Borgeaud 15’, Ugrinic 22’, 43’, Sam Whithear 85’) Belconnen United bounced back from their penalty shootout loss in the FFA Cup to record a convincing 4-1 win over Tuggeranong United at the AIS on Sunday. A brace to Jason Ugrinic was complemented by goals to Phil Borgeaud and Sam Whithear as Amilio Kishta scored for the home side. After an even start Borgeaud opened the scoring in the 14th minute to make it 1-0 to Belconnen as he rose highest at the back post to meet Cameron Reinhardt’s cross with a towering header back across the keeper. Ugrinic extended the lead just seven minutes later as he arrived unmarked at the back post to meet Whithear’s cross after a break away down the left wing. Tuggeranong pressed hard to get back into the game and almost went ahead in the 33rd minute. A deflected shot sent Finn Jurak the wrong way in goals but he was able to get himself back across to make a difficult save as a goal beckoned for Tuggeranong. Ugrinic grabbed his brace just two minutes before the half-time break with a superb solo effort. After receiving the ball on the right from a switch, the forward drove into the box before cutting inside his defender and burying his strike inside the far post to extend the lead to 3-0. The half-time score was arguably an unfair reflection of the first half for Tuggeranong who had played well but struggled to create chances, while their opponent’s efficiency in front of goal had proven the difference. The second half opened evenly as Tuggeranong really pushed to grab a goal back, and they finally got on the board after 71 minutes. Kishta stood over a Tuggeranong free-kick, and the ball took a wicked deflection as he looked to curl it into the far corner. The deflection wrong-footed Jurak and sailed into the net to give the home side a fighting chance with just under 20 minutes to go. However, Sean Murphy’s side were unable to make their possession count as the game wore on, and were punished in the 85th minute as Whithear converted from close range to seal the match at 4-1.

Monaro and Tuggeranong play out 8-goal thriller Monaro Panthers 4 (Zoe Szeremet 46’, 51’, 81’, Meuronen 77’) drew. Tuggeranong United 4 (Meg McLaughlin 23’, 75’, Sandra Hill 37’, Own Goal 59’) A second-half comeback from Monaro Panthers earned them a 4-4 draw with Tuggeranong United at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday. The home side were looking to bounce back after a heavy loss at the hands of Gungahlin United last weekend, whist the visitors were eager to make it two in a row after a 2-1 win over Olympic in round 6. Tuggeranong started the game on the front foot, looking lively up front, with the return of Meg McLaughlin giving the visitors some much needed creativity and movement that has been lacking in recent weeks. The Panthers were shaky against a high pressing Tuggeranong side, but the home side were keen to explore the gaps in behind United’s defence and they manage to create an early chance, but Kelly Stirton couldn’t convert the one on one opportunity against Cristina Esposito in goals. The visitors broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute, when McLaughlin latched onto a through-ball from Sophie Barnsley and edged past Grace Lockard in goals to finish into an empty net. Tuggeranong then extended their lead with a brace in the 31st minute, with Sandra Hill finding space at the top of the box to send in a sumptuous long effort dipping over Lockard and into the back of the net. After a less-than-impressive first half, Monaro coach Angelo Maralit decided to shuffle some of the players from his first half formation and the change had an instant impact, with Zoe Szeremet finding space outside the box and burying a long effort into the top left corner in the 46th minute. Just one minute later, Tuggeranong nearly hit back but an effort from Sophia Evans could only find the woodwork. The Panthers levelled the scores just 6 minutes into the second half, when Szeremet created space inside the box and rocketed her shot past Esposito and in off the crossbar in the 51st minute. Tuggeranong United began to apply the pressure again, and Monaro coughed up the lead once again, as Lara Burdett sent a skewed pass back towards Lockard who couldn’t react in time and the ball floated over her head for an own goal. The visitors regained a two goal lead in the 71st minute, as Meg McLaughlin doubled her tally for the afternoon, connecting on the half volley from a corner and rifling the ball off the crossbar and in. Monaro hit back again just 6 minutes later with Alicia Meuronen capitalising on an out of position Esposito who failed to clear, and finishing into an empty net. The scores were levelled once again in the 81st minute, as Szeremet completed her second half hat trick taking on the Tuggeranong defence and calmly finishing past Esposito into the bottom right corner. Both sides pushed until the end of what was an end-to-end second half, but the result remained at 4-4 as the final whistle sounded.

PS4 NPL Women’s Belconnen United 7 (Jasmine Maguire 17’, 45+1’, Maddy Whittall 18’, 37’, Nicole Jalocha 50’, Chloe Callaghan 53’, Karen Clarke 71’) def. Canberra United Academy 0 Belconnen United put themselves outright first in the Playstation 4 National Premier League Women’s with a dominant 7-0 win over the Canberra United Academy at McKellar Park. After an even start, the reigning Premiers began to assert themselves on the match and Jasmine Maguire gave them the lead with a nice finish after 17 minutes. Maddy Whittall shocked the visitors as she doubled the score just a minute later, and United took control from there. Maguire and Whittall both grabbed another of their own before the half-time break as the home side went into the sheds four goals to the good. Nicole Jacocha extended the advantage five minutes into the second half as she took full advantage of a dropped ball off a corner to volley home from pointblank range, and the Academy appeared stunned at five goals down. Three minutes later Michaela Day slid a pass to the back post for Chloe Callaghan to tuck home, and Karen Clarke rounded out the scoring on 71 minutes as she slid a penalty underneath the keeper after a push in the box. The Academy struggled to create chances as the game wore on and both sides appeared tired as the match petered out to a close. Canberra FC 4 (Chantel Jones 28’, 70’, Marcia Wallis 90+1’, Hayley McLachlan 21’) def. Gungahlin United 1 (Ashleigh Palombi 75’) Canberra FC leapfrogged Gungahlin United into third place on the table with a 4-1 defeat of them at Deakin on Sunday. In a match that opened at a fast-pace, the home side were the first to strike as Hayley McLachlan opened the scoring after 21 minutes. Chantel Jones added to the scoresheet seven minutes later as she got her first of the match and Canberra FC took control of the match through to the half-time break. The second half began evenly and continued at the same pace as the first

Round 7 Wrap half, but again the home side were the first to create the breakthrough. Jones completed her brace 15 minutes into the half to give her side a 3-0 lead, before Ashleigh Palombi gave her side a sliver of hope with 15 minutes left as she finished a good Gungahlin move. However the home side held strong against the visitors as they chased the game, and Marcia Wallis sealed the deal in stoppage time as she made it 4-1 to Canberra FC. Canberra Olympic 0 def. by Woden-Weston FC 4 (Laura Vandenbroucke 30’, Vanessa Ryan 40’, 48’, Cassia McGlashan 79’) Woden-Weston bounced back from last weekend’s thumping from Belconnen FC as they recorded a 4-0 victory to keep Canberra Olympic winless on the season so far. Diego Elmoudawar made a number of changes following injuries in the previous match, and his side came out of the blocks stronger as they looked to push Olympic back from the outset. Rob Scott’s Olympic side were up to the challenge early however as they fought back, but the visitors found a way through after a half-hour as Laura Vandenbroucke opened the scoring. It only took them ten minutes to find another as Vanessa Ryan scored her first goal of the game to fire her side into a 2-0 lead as half-time approached. Ryan picked up where she left off after the interval as she sealed her brace just three minutes into the second half and gave Woden-Weston a seemingly unassailable lead. Try as they might Olympic were unable to find a breakthrough as they pushed forward, and Cassia McGlashan struck with 12 minutes remaining to seal the match as Olympic opened up on the counter attack. The win leaves Woden-Weston just two points outside the top four as they face the Canberra United Academy next weekend.
